Herbst - ist es wirklich schon so spaet? / Fall - is it really that late?

Viehtrieb im Herbst / Cattle drive in fall

Am Donnerstag - einen Tag vor dem ersten Schnee dieses Herbstes - haben wir alle Rinder zur Ranch getrieben. Die Kaelber wurden von den Kuehen getrennt und gegen ansteckende Krankheiten geimpft. Sie werden in etwa einem Monat verkauft und den Winter ueber gemaestet. Der Kaeufer verlangt die Impfungen, man spricht von "pre-conditioning". Im naechsten Sommer kommen die Kaelber dann als Jaehrlinge wieder auf Weide - allerdings nicht bei uns. Wir behalten unsere Kuehe, die von den Bullen gedeckt wurden und im Fruehling wieder Kaelber bekommen.

On Thursday - one day before the first snow of this fall - we moved all cattle to the ranch. The calves were separated from the cows and vaccinated against contagious deseases. In about one month they will be sold and fattened in feedlots over the winter. The buyer requires the vaccinations, it's called "preconditioning". Next summer the calves will be out on pasture again, then as yearlings. But not on our place. We keep our cows which have been bred by the bulls and will have calves again next spring.

Mittlerweile ist es wieder mild, aber der Herbst hat endgueltig Einzug gehalten. Samstag sind Karina aus der Schweiz und Jenny aus England angereist. Waehrend die diesjaehrige Saison langsam dem Ende zugeht, sind wir schon fleissig am Buchen fuer naechstes Jahr. Falls Ihr (wieder)kommen wollt, wartet nicht zu lange ... insbesondere Juni wird schnell voll. Die Preise werden sich uebrigens - bis auf den Flughafentransfer - nicht aendern.

In the meantime it has been become mild again but fall is here to stay. Saturday Karina from Switzerland and Jenny from England arrived. And while this season is slowly closing, we are already busy booking for next year. If you want to come (again), don't wait too long ... especially June will be full soon. The rates will stay the same with the exception of the airport transfer.  

P.S. Angelica kommt uebrigens nicht aus Norwegen, sondern aus Schweden ;-)

Den ersten Schnee haben wir uebrigens ueberlebt. Jetzt ist es vorerst wieder sonnig und mild. Typisch Wyoming!

Heute haben alle beim Zaeunebauen geholfen, morgen steht ein langer Tag mit Rinderarbeit an, aber gestern hatten wir Zeit zum Spielen: Team-Penning. Unsere Longhorn-Kuehe fanden es sicher nicht so toll, aber unsere Reiter hatten Spass. (Die Pferde habe ich noch nicht gefragt.) Twister macht uebrigens Fortschritte, und vor Rindsviechern hat er eh keine Angst.

Today everyone helped with fencing, tomorrow will be a long day of cattle work but yesterday we had time to play: team penning. Our longhorn cows probably did not enjoy it that much but our riders had fun. (I haven't asked the horses, yet.) Twister is making progress and bovines don't scare him anyway.

Laraine hat uns leider verlassen, dafuer sind nach langer Irrfahrt Bettina und Karoline aus Deutschland angekommen. Das Wetter wird herbstlicher ... Lance hat Schnee fuer diese Woche angekuendigt, aber wir hoffen, dass er kein Recht behaelt. Was wissen Leute aus Florida schon von Schnee?!

Unfortunately, Laraine has left us. Bettina and Karoline have come instead - after a long odyssey from Germany. The weather is changing ... Lance has announced snow for this week but we hope he'll be wrong. What do people from Florida know about snow anyway?!

Bis auf Laraine sind schon wieder alle weg. Und in drei Wochen ist die Saison zu Ende. Wahnsinn, wie die Zeit vergeht! Wir hatten wieder eine schoene Woche, wie die Bilder zeigen. Other than Laraine everyone has left again. And the seasons ends in three weeks. It's amazing how time goes by! We have had a great week again as the pictures show. And today Ellen and Tom from England, Thale and Angelica from Norway and Axel, Jens and Peter from Germany arrived.

Leider habe ich - unwissentlich und absichtlich - Kathrins und Huberts Fotokarte zerstoert ... einige tolle Bilder entgehen Euch (und uns) leider, aber vielleicht kann ein Spezialist die Fotos noch retten ... ich druecke die Daumen, Kathrin und Hubert!

Am Mittwoch reiste Thomas (aus Deutschland) an, am Samstag Irma und Margret (aus Holland) sowie Sarah und Sharon (aus England). Zusammen mit Kathrin, Hubert, Maggie und Alex haben wir eine Pferdeauktion besucht ... aber kein Pferd gekauft. Wir sind zu oft bei Auktionen hereingelegt worden. Hier im Wilden Westen gibt es keine Kaeufergarantie!

On Wednesday Thomas (German) arrived, on Saturday Irma and Margret (Dutch) as well as Sarah and Sharon (English). Together with Kathrin, Hubert, Maggie and Alex we all went to a horse sale on Saturday ... but we did not buy a horse. We have been tricked too often at auctions. There is not buyer's guarantee in the Wild West! 

Als Lance am Sonntagmorgen mit den Neuankoemmlingen die Einfuehrung machte, bin ich mit den anderen auf einen "aussichtsreichen" Ausritt gegangen. Es war sonnig, aber kuehl und stuermisch ... mein Lieblingswetter. Und fuers Reiten ideal!

When Lance did the introduction with the "newbies" on Sunday morning, I took the others on a "ride with a view". It was sunny but cool and windy ... my favorite weather. And perfect for riding!

Ich werde in den naechsten Tagen noch ein paar Fotos von unseren Gaesten "stehlen" und einen ausfuehrlicheren Blog online stellen. Was sonst noch geschah: Am Freitag sind wir alle tanzen gegangen, am Samstag ist eine unterirdische Wasserleitung gebrochen, die Nick mit Hilfe von Nachbar Ken reparieren konnte, am Sonntag hatten dann fast alle Gaeste und Mitarbeiter eine Erkaeltung ... wir haben Rinder geschoben und Zaeune auf- und abgebaut ... und unsere Haeuser sind nun alle frisch gestrichen.

During the next few days I will "steal" some more photos from the guests and put a more detailed blog online. What else happened: On Friday we all went dancing, on Saturday an underground water line broke but Nick and neighbor Ken could fix it, by Sunday most of the guests and employees had a cold ... we moved cattle and put up and down fence ... and all the houses have been painted. 

Morgen werden uns Huebert und Kathrin verlassen, dafuer hole ich Laraine aus Grossbritannien vom Flughafen ab.  

Tomorrow Hubert and Kathrin will leave us. I am picking up Laraine (from Great Britain) from the airport.
