Jetzt vergesse ich uebers Facebook-Posten schon den Blog ... die Filme muesst Ihr Euch dort anschauen. Ich glaube nicht, dass ich nochmal die Geduld aufbringe, sie auch hier hochzuladen.

I am almost forgetting the blog while posting on Facebook all the time ... you'll have to watch the movies there, though. I don't think I will muster the patience again to upload them here as well.

Es ist Winter, aber es liegt nicht allzu viel Schnee, und es ist nicht allzu kalt. Nach wochenlangem Streik haben meine Huehner endlich wieder ein (!) Ei gelegt ... wohlgemerkt ein Ei bei ueber 20 Huehnern ... naja. Nick spricht schon von Huehnernudelsuppe, aber soweit sind wir noch nicht!

It is winter but there isn't too much snow and it's not too cold either. After a strike which has lasted for weeks my chickens have layed one (!) egg ... just to mention it again: one egg and more than 20 chickens ... well. Nick is talking about chicken noodle soup but we are not there, yet.

Die Tiere geniessen die Winterruhe, die Pferde sind trotz des kargen Wintergrases, das sie aus dem Schnee scharren muessen, fetter als im Sommer. Was wieder einmal beweist, wie schaedlich zu viel gutes Futter - insbesondere Getreide - fuer Pferde sein kann. Sie sind einfach nicht dafuer gemacht.

The animals are enjoying the calm of the winter. The horses are fatter than in summer even though they have to paw out old grass from underneath the snow. Which shows again that most horses are not made for too much and too good feed - especially grain.

Ich bin leider auch nicht fuer Schokolade gemacht, so dass mal wieder eine Neujahrsdiaet ansteht ;-)

And I am not made for chocolate which means a new year's diet is on the way ;-)

Obwohl wir eigentlich gar nicht sooo viel zu tun haben, sind wir den ganzen Tag beschaeftigt ... das ist wie mit den Rentnern, die gar nicht mehr wissen, wie sie frueher ueberhaupt die Zeit hatten, um arbeiten zu gehen. Der Weihnachtstrubel geht hier draussen an uns vorbei, und ich komme endlich mal wieder dazu, Buecher zu lesen. Was will man mehr ?!

Even though we don't have to do thaaat much right now, we are busy all day ... that's like with retired people who have so much on their plate that they have no idea how before retirement they had the time to go to work. All that Christmas hassle passed us out here on the ranch and I am finding the time to read books again. What more could I want for ?!

Nick und ich wuenschen Euch allen frohe Weihnachten und ein gutes neues Jahr! Wir freuen uns darauf, Euch kennenzulernen bzw. viele von Euch wiederzusehen. Es sind nur noch knapp fuenf Monate zum Saisonbeginn ;-) Und ja, Lance kommt wieder ...

Nachdem wir bereits fuer die Pferde eine Wasserleitung aus einem Reservoir gelegt haben, damit sie fliessendes Wasser haben, waren heute die Rinder dran - siehe Fotos. Komischerweise waren weder Pferde noch Rinder allzu interessiert, denn sie haben sich daran gewoehnt, Schnee zu fressen. Aber Nick und ich haben jetzt trotzdem ein besseres Gewissen ;-)

After we already built a siphon from one of the reservoirs for the horses so that they have running water, we've built another one for the cattle today - see pics. Funnily enough neither the horses nor the cattle were too interested since they got used to eating snow. But Nick and I have a better conscience now anyway ;-) 

Am Sonntag haben wir Rita zum Flughafen gefahren (die nach langer Irrfahrt mittlerweile in der Schweiz angelangt ist). Auf dem Rueckweg haben wir ueber 100 Eisenbahnschwellen mit einem Gewicht von ca. 7000 Kilo mitgenommen, die wir im Sommer zum Zaeunebauen benoetigen. Den letzten Berg direkt nach Hulett haben wir dann aber trotz Ketten nicht geschafft. Am naechsten Tag mussten wir mit dem Traktor zurueckfahren, um den Anhaenger abzuholen (s. Foto). Die naechsten 150 Schwellen werden wir erst abholen, wenn kein Schnee mehr liegt ;-)

On Sunday we brought Rita to the airport (who finally arrived after a long odysee). On the way home we picked up more than 100 railroad ties with a weight of about 14,000 lbs which we will use for fencing in summer. We did not make the last hill right after Hulett, despite chains. Had to return the next day to pull the trailer home with the tractor (s. photo). The next 150 ties we won't pick up till the snow is gone ;-)

Ansonsten haben JoAnn und ich Brote und Plaetzchen fuer die Nachbarschaft gebacken. Morgen wollen Heike und ich zum Weihnachtsshopping nach Rapid City fahren. Nick will unterdessen einem Nachbarn bei der Rinderarbeit helfen ... und dabei hoffentlich eine unserer Kuehe finden, die seit Wochen verschollen ist. Und am Samstag findet die New Haven-Weihnachtsparty im Gemeindezentrum statt.

Other than that: JoAnn and I baked bread and cookies for the neighbors. Tomorrow Heike and I will go Christmas shopping in Rapid City. In the meantime, Nick will help a neighbor with cattle work ... and hopefully find one of our cows who has been missing for weeks. On Saturday there will be the New Haven Christmas party at the Community Center.

Ein paar Bilder von gestern Abend, als wir gecheckt haben, wie es den Pferden geht ... tagsueber minus 15 bis minus 20 Grad Celsius, nachts viel kaelter. Wie machen die Tiere das nur? Ich friere sogar mit Kleidung und Decken in unserem Haus ... das allerdings nur unterm Dach isoliert ist, nicht in den Waenden und am Fussboden. Heute Abend gehts nach Hulett, Ritas Abschied feiern. Am Sonntag muss sie wieder in die Schweiz fliegen ...

How do the animals deal with that? I am cold with clothes and blankets in our house ... which only has insulation in the roof, though. Not the walls and the floor. Tonight we are going to Hulett. Am Mittwoch fuhren Nick und ich von Hulett im Nordosten Wyomings zehn Stunden lang nach Evanston im Suedwesten des Bundestaates ... nicht allzu stressig, denn Staus gibt es ja in Wyoming nicht ;-) Brandons Eltern Mike und Kathy hatten uns zu Thanksgiving eingeladen, dem wahrscheinlich wichtigsten Familienfest in den USA - immer am letzten Donnerstag im November. Traditionell gibt es gebratenen Truthahn, Suesskartoffeln, Stuffing, Cranberry-Sauce, Gruene-Bohnen-Kasserole, Kuerbiskuchen und und und. Brandon, Brandy, Emmett und Garrett waren auch dort, ebenso Brandons Brueder und ihre Familien.

On Wednesday, Nick and I drove ten hours from Hulett in Northeastern Wyoming to Evanston in the Southwestern part of the state ... not very stressful since there are no traffic jams in Wyoming ;-) Brandon's parents Mike and Kathy had invited us for Thanksgiving - probably the US' most important family celebration, always on the last Thursday of November. Traditional foods are roasted turkey, sweet potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, pumpkin pie and and and. Brandon, Brandy, Emmett and Garrett were there as well as were Brandon's brothers and their families.

Am Tag nach Thanksgiving machten Nick und ich uns auf nach Salt Lake City in Utah, nur ca. zwei Stunden entfernt. Wir wollten uns die von Mormonen gegruendete Stadt und ihre Umgebung anschauen. Salt Lake City ist von hohen Bergen eingerahmt, die 2006 Schauplatz der Olympischen Winterspiele waren. Wir haben uns die Stadt erwandert. Besonders beeindruckend ist der aus Granit erbaute Tempel der Mormonen, zu dem Nicht-Mormonen aber keinen Zugang haben. Die Polygamie wurde offiziell schon laengst abgeschafft, u.a. weil die USA Utah anonsten nicht als eigenstaendigen Bundesstaat anerkannt haette, aber von einer Gleichberechtigung der Geschlechter kann in der mormonischen Kirche trotzdem nicht die Rede sein. Jeder, wie er oder sie es mag.

The day after Thanksgiving Nick and I drove to Salt Lake City in Utah, just about two hours from Evanston. We wanted to visit the Mormon city and its surrounding area. Salt Lake City is framed by high mountains which in 2006 were the site of the Winter Olympic Games. We walked through most of downtown. The granite temple is especially impressive but non-Mormons are not allowed to enter it. Polygamy for which Mormons are still somewhat (in)famous has officially been abolished a long time ago, also because the United States would not have accepted Utah's application to become a state of the union. Now, to say that today the genders have equal rights in the Mormon church, would be a bit of a stretch. Each to his or her own I guess.

Wir haben die Annehmlichkeiten einer groesseren Stadt genossen und uns am naechsten Tag auf den Weg nach Antelope Island gemacht, einer Insel im Grossen Salzsee Utahs. Dieser See wird von zahlreichen Fluessen gespeist, hat aber keinen Abfluss, so dass das Wasser verdunstet, die vielen Mineralien sich aber ansammeln - ein wahres Paradies fuer alle Arten von Voegeln. Auf Antelope Island haben wir uns eine historische Ranch angeschaut und Ideen gesammelt, die unsere Ranch mehr autark machen, d.h. unabhaengiger von den Segnungen der modernen Welt ... manchmal muss man dafuer nur ein bisschen in die Vergangenheit gehen.

After enjoying the amenities of a big city, the next day we left for Antelope Island situated in Utah's Great Salt Lake. The Lake is fed by various rivers but does not have an outlet. The water evaporates, leaving the minerals to accumulate in the lake. A paradise for many kinds of birds. We visited a historic ranch on the island and gathered some ideas on how to live more independently from the blessings of the modern world ... sometimes one just has to go back in time.

Auf der Insel gibt es viele Antilopen und seit 1893 auch Bisons, die per Schiff auf das Eiland gebracht wurden. Rinder und Schafe gibt es nicht mehr, aber Pferde sieht man gluecklicherweise noch ... wenn auch nur als Reittiere fuer touristische Exkursionen. Mittags haben wir uns wieder auf den Weg nach Hulett gemacht, das wir um Mitternacht erreichten. Wir wollten noch einige Aussenarbeiten erledigen, bevor es am Dienstag kalt wird ... am Donnerstag soll es tagsueber nur minus 15 Grad Celsius werden ... nach einigen wunderschoenen milden Herbstwochen.

There are many antelope on the island and since 1893 bison as well. They were brought to the island by ship. Cattle and sheep are long gone but one still sees some horses ... even though just as mounts for touristic excursions. At noon we headed back home where we arrived at about midnight. We wanted to get some chores done before it is getting cold on Tuesday ... on Thursday we are expecting 0 degrees Fahrenheit - during the day. And that after quite a few mild and beautiful fall weeks.

Da es momentan wenig schneit, die Reservoirs aber gefroren sind, hatte Nick die Idee, Wasser in einem Schlauch ueber einen Damm in einen Canyon zu leiten, damit die Pferde und Rinder trinken koennen. Fuellt man den Schlauch mit Wasser, verankert ein Schlauchende im See und legt das andere Schlauchende tiefer, dann hoert das Wasser nicht auf zu fliessen, und fliessendes Wasser friert bekanntlich nicht so schnell ;-)

Since it does not snow much right now and the reservoirs are frozen, Nick had the idea to siphon water in a hose across a dam into a canyon so the horses and cattle can drink. If you fill a hose with water, keep one end in the reservoir and the other end lower than that, the water does not stop flowing and flowing water - as is well-known - does not freeze that easily ;-)

Ein Tag im Sattle, Besuch bei Romina und Nick und ein Wiedersehen mit Chuck / A day in the saddle, visiting Romina and Nick and seeing Chuck again

Kalt, aber schoen / Cold but beautiful

Am Freitag halfen wir unserem Nachbarn Will, seine Jungkuehe zusammenzutreiben, damit der Tierarzt sie auf Schwangerschaft testen konnte. Es war eiskalt, aber wunderschoen ... insbesondere, als die Sonne aufging und uns langsam aufwaermte. Ein anderer Nachbar - Jake - war mit zwei italienischen Gaesten - Giada und Domenico - ebenfalls dabei. Ich bin zum ersten Mal Cassidy geritten: Sie ist eine ganz Liebe.

On Friday we helped our neighbor Will, to move his heifers in so that the vet could preg check them. It was really cold but beautiful ... especially when the sun rose and warmed us up. Another neighbor - Jake - and two Italian guests - Giada and Domenico - came as well. I rode Cassidy for the first time: She is a sweetheart.

Um Missverstaendnisse zu vermeiden: Der Tierarzt fuehrt sein Unltraschallgeraet nicht in die Gebaermutter ein, sondern in den Darm, um von dort aus die Gebaermutter abzutasten. Das erfordert Muskelkraft ... und natuerlich auch Erfahrung. Und ein sauberer Job ist es auf keinen Fall ;-)

To avoid misunderstandings: The vet does not put the ultrasound device into the uterus but into the intestine to check the uterus from there. It requires quite some strength ... and experience, of course. And it's not a clean job for sure ;-)

Am Samstag fuhren Rita und ich in die Black Hills, um Romina und ihren Mann Nick auf ihrer kleinen Ranch zu besuchen. Romina war ja mal als Gast auf unsere Ranch gekommen und hatte bei einem Rodeo Nick kennengelernt. Im Juni haben die Beiden geheiratet, und im Maerz erwarten sie ihr erstes Kind. Ganz schoen romantisch!

On Saturday Rita and I drove into the Black Hills to visit Romina and her husband Nick on their little ranch. Romina came here first as a guest on our ranch and then met Nick at a rodeo. In June the two married and in March they are expecting their first child. Quite romantic!

Natuerlich haben wir auch Chuck besucht. Wir hatten den grossen Schecken als Gaestepferd gekauft, aber er ist nicht ganz gesund und hat zum Glueck bei Romina und Nick ein neues Zuhause gefunden, wo er hin und wieder geritten wird und sich ansonsten voll frisst ... er wird sicher ein tolles Kinderpferd werden.

We also saw Chuck again, of course. We had bought the big Paint as a guest horse but he's not totally healthy and luckily found a new home at Romina's and Nick's where he gets ridden once in a while and otherwise eats as much as he can ... he will be a great kids horse one day.

"Mein" Nick ist heute am Zaeunebauen, und ich hole Bueroarbeit nach, nachdem wir mehrere Tage kein Internet hatten. Rita ist mit Carolina und Greg zu einem Cowboy Music und Poetry-Treffen in den Black Hills gefahren. Die Einkuenfte werden den Ranchern gespendet, die im Oktober-Blizzard Rinder, Pferde und Schafe verloren haben. Cowboy Music und Poetry ... das gibt's auch nur im Wilden Westen!

"My" Nick is building fence today and I am catching up with office work after we were without internet for a few days. Together with Carolina and Greg, Rita has gone to a Cowboy music and poetry meeting in the Black Hills. The proceeds go the ranchers who lost cattle, horses and sheep during October's blizzard. Cowboy music and poetry ... something you only find in the Wild West!

Die Jagdsaison geht ihrem Ende zu. Silke ist wieder in Deutschland. Und Rita zaehlt die Tage bis zu ihrer Abreise ... mit Schrecken. Wir verkaufen viel Heu. Letztens habe ich den Pferden Salz auf ihre Winterkoppel gebracht und war fuer ein paar Minuten die Attraktion des Tages. Passiert ja sonst nichts da draussen ... inzwischen hat es auch wieder geschneit, aber bisher ist es auszuhalten. Nicht viel Neues im Westen ... ausser ein paar Fotos.

Hunting season is about to end. Silke is back in Germany. And Rita is counting the days to her departure ... unhappily. We are selling lots of hay. The other day I brought salt to the horses on their winter pasture and was the main attraction for a few moments. Nothing else happening out there ... in the meantime it has snowed again but the weather is still bearable. Nothing new from the West ... just a few pics.
