Die Ranch/ the ranch: Lee's Valley Station

Im Februar waren wir fuer drei Wochen in Neuseeland, wo zu dieser Zeit Sommer war. In Auckland auf der Nordinsel angekommen haben wir zuerst Kathrin besucht, eine deutsche Freundin, die auch schon mal bei uns in Wyoming gewesen und nun "down under" zu Hause ist. Zusammen mit Brandy und den Kindern - Emmett und Garrett - sind wir dann an Vulkanen, Milchviehbetrieben und tropischen Straenden vorbei Richtung Sueden gefahren und mit der Faehre auf die Suedinsel uebergesetzt.

In February we spent three weeks in New Zealand where it was summer at this time. Once we had arrived in Auckland on the North Island, we visited Kathrin, a German friend, who had spent some time with us in Wyoming and now lives "down under". Together with Brandy and the kids - Emmett and Garrett - we then traveled South passing volcanos, dairy farms and tropical beaches. We took the ferry over to the South Island.

Auf dem Weg zur Ranch, auf der Brandys Mann Brandon arbeitet und die Familie lebt, haben wir das Meer, die exotischen Tiere und Pflanzen und ueberhaupt die wunderschoene Natuer Neuseelands genossen. Nur das Fahren auf der linken Strassenseite und der Dialekt der Kiwis waren gewoehnungsbeduerftig ;-)

On the way to the ranch where Brandy's husband Brandon works and the family lives we enjoyed the sea, the exotic animals and plants and New Zealands' beautiful scenery. Only driving on the left side of the road and the Kiwi dialect took some getting used to ;-)

Die Ranch - hier Station genannt - ist nur ueber eine sehr schmale, sich scharf windende unbefestigte Strasse zu erreichen, auf deren einen Seite man bequem in den Abgrund schauen - und auch fallen - konnte. So kann man sich die Nachbarn auch vom Leibe halten ;-)

The ranch - which they call station here - can only be reached on a very narrow winding dirt road from which one could look - and possibly fall - right into steep canyons. One way of keeping the neighbors away ;-) 

Und dass Brandy die Kinder selbst unterrichten muss, versteht sich von selbst. Die taegliche Fahrt zur Schule kaeme einer Weltreise gleich. Genau so wie in vielen Teilen Wyomings.

No need to mention that Brandy has to home-school the kids. The daily trip to school would be extremely time-consuming. Just like in many parts of Wyoming.

Die ueppigen Weiden im Tal sind von unwegsamen Bergen umgeben. Waehrend in der Ebene Rinder grasen, leben die grossen Schafherden in den Huegeln. Und ein Fluss zieht sich durch die Mitte der Station - Lebensquelle, aber auch Badestelle. Hier wird mittlerweile weniger mit Pferden als mit Hunden gearbeitet, und Pickups sind ebenso beliebt wie im Wilden Westen Amerikas.

The abundant pastures in the valley are surrounded by rough mountains. While the cattle graze the flats, the big herds of sheep roam the hills. And a river runs through the middle of the station - life source as well as swimming hole. They use horse here less than dogs and pickups are as popular as in the Wild West of America.

Es war faszinierend fuer uns zu erleben, wie anders man hier lebt und arbeitet - insbesondere in der Landwirtschaft. Und ein Rugbyspiel haben wir uns auch angeschaut ... auch wenn wir die Regeln nicht ganz verstanden haben.

It was fascinating to experience how differently people live and work here - especially in agriculture. And we also watched a rugby game ... even though we did not really understand the rules.

Ich wuenschte, wir koennten Neuseeland oefter besuchen, aber der lange Flug und die Kosten sind nicht ohne. Und mal abgesehen davon, dass ich das Meer schon mal vermisse in Wyoming und die Winter in Neuseeland viel milder sind, bin ich doch mehr im Wilden Westen zu Hause als auf der anderen Seite der Erdkugel ;-)

I wish we could make it to New Zealand more often but the long flight and the costs are detrimental. And even though I miss the sea once in a while here in Wyoming and even though the New Zealand winters are so much nicer, my heart feels home in the Wild West and not on the other side of the globe ;-)

Seit ein paar Tagen herrscht Fruehling, und wir geniessen noch jede Sekunde Waerme und Sonnenschein. Der Winter war sehr lang ... und ist wahrscheinlich auch noch nicht ganz vorbei.

Spring seems to have arrived a few days ago. And we are still enjoying every second of warmth and sunshine. The winter has been very long ... and most likely it's not totally over, yet.

Nicks Tochter Brandy, ihr Mann Brandon und ihre Soehne Emmett und Garrett sind ueber Ostern zu Besuch auf New Haven. Heute Morgen gingen die Jungs auf Ostereiersuche (s. Foto), mittags haben wir uns bei Nachbarn zum Essen getroffen und nachmittags mit den Pferden „gespielt“.  Und waehrend die anderen unter freiem Himmel im heissen Whirlpool entspannen, schreibe ich endlich mal wieder einen Blog ;-)

Nick's daughter Brandy, her husband Brandon and their sons Emmett and Garrett are visiting New Haven over Easter. This morning the boys searched for Easter eggs (s. photo), later we met with neighbors for lunch and in the afternoon we "played" with the horses. And while the others are relaxing in the hot tub under the open sky, I am finally writing a blog again ;-)

Am Samstagabend waren Brandy, Brandon, Nick und ich (Nicks Mutter JoAnn hat die Kinder gehuetet) zum Tanzen in Moorcroft, wo wir uns mit Rita, Mark, Carolina und Greg getroffen haben. „Chancey Williams and the Younger Brothers“ spielten Country Music, und jeder von 8 bis 80 war auf den Beinen. Moorcroft ist etwa eine Stunde entfernt, aber das ist hier ja keine Entfernung.

On Saturday evening Brandy, Brandon, Nick and I (Nick's mother JoAnn babysat the kids) drove to a dance in Moorcroft where we met with Rita, Mark, Carolina and Greg. "Chancey Williams and the Younger Brother" were playing Country music and everyone between 8 and 80 was on their feet. Moorcroft is about one hour away but that's not a significant distance out here.

Samstagmorgen waren wir bei unseren Amishen Nachbarn. Nick moechte gern ein Gespann fahren. Und wir haben uns bei Henry ueber Geschirre und Fahrgestelle kundig gemacht. Die beiden jungen Quarter Horse-Rappen auf dem Bild oben sind angebunden an die beiden grossen Belgier, um den Job eines Kutschpferdes von der Pike auf zu lernen. Die Belgier werden allerdings eher fuer die Feldarbeit eingesetzt, waehrend die Amish Traber wie American Standardbred fuer laengere Ueberlandfahrten einspannen. Waehrend unseres Besuchs kam ein Nachbar mit einem Schimmelgespann vorbei, um sich einen Pflug auszuleihen (Foto s.u.).

Saturday morning we drove over to our Amish neighbors. Nick wants to start driving a team. And we talked to Henry about harnesses and carts. The two young black Quarter Horses on the pic above are tied to the two big Belgians to learn their job from scratch. The Belgians are mostly used for field work though while the Amish use American Standardbreds for longer trips. During our visit a neighbor came by with a team of greys to pick up a plow (photo below).

Am Freitag habe ich Peter via Mount Rushmore zum Flughafen gebracht, von wo aus er fuer das Wochenende nach Las Vegas fliegen wollte, um sich von den New Haven-Strapazen zu erholen ;-) Am Montag trifft er sich dann mit seiner Frau in New York, von wo aus es eine Woche spaeter wieder heim in die Schweiz geht. Peter war erst drei Male in seinem Leben geritten (alle dreimal hier auf Buster), als Nick ihm vorschlug, allein loszuziehen. Ich fand das natuerlich zu gefaehrlich, aber die Maenner haben mich ueberstimmt.  Fuer Peter wurde ein Traum wahr, und dank unserem routinierten Buster ueberlebte er diesen Traum auch ;-) Die Beiden waren fuenf Stunden unterwegs ... Peter hatte sich verritten. Buster wusste natuerlich, wo zu Hause war, aber Peter traute ihm nicht so ganz. Am Abend schlurfte Peter wie ein alter Mann durchs Haus ;-)

On Friday I drove Peter to the airport - via Mount Rushmore. He wanted to fly to Las Vegas for the weekend to recover from the hard life on New Haven ;-) On Monday he's going to meet his wife in New York City from where the two will leave one week later to return home to Switzerland. Peter had ridden three times in his life (all three times here on Buster). Nick suggested that for the forth time Peter ride out alone. I thought that was too dangerous but the two men outvoted me. A dream came true for Peter and thanks to our reliable Buster Peter survived the dream as well ;-) They were gone for five hours ... Peter lost orientation. Buster knew where home was but Peter did not really trust him. In the evening Peter shuffled around the house like an old man ;-)

Am Donnerstag kamen Carolina und Greg zu Besuch. Ich hatte Carolina versprochen, ihr ein paar Gaense zu ueberlassen, die wir dann allerdings erstmal einfangen mussten. Nach dem neuesten Stand der Dinge, haben sich die Gaense (zwei Paare) gut eingelebt ... jetzt sollen sie Eier legen und Gaenslein ausbrueten.

On Thursday Carolina and Greg visited. I had promised Carolina to give her some geese which we then had to catch ... not that easy. As far as I know the geese (two couples) have settled into their new home ... now they are supposed to lay eggs and hatch goslings.

Phillip, Tiffany und ihre Kinder haben die Ranch verlassen, weil wir ja jetzt wieder unser Trailerhaus benoetigen. Huendin AC und Katzen Scoobidoo und Miss Walkie-Talkie sind damit auch wieder Vergangenheit.

Nick und ich haben an einem eintaegigen Erste-Hilfe-Kurs in Sundance teilgenommen und uns danach zwei Pferde angesehen, die zum Verkauf standen. Splash – ein blauaeugiger grau-weisser Paintwallach – und George – ein kleiner Fuchswallach – sind jetzt Teil unserer Herde, wobei George eventuell nach Montana umziehen wird, wo er Emmetts und Garretts Pferd werden soll (s. Bild).

Nick and I took part in a CRP class in Sundance. Afterwards we looked at two horses which were for sale. Splash - a blue-eyed grey and white Pain gelding - and George - a small sorrel gelding - are now part of our herd. George though may move to Montana where he may become Emmett's and Garrett's horse (s. pic).

Wir haben viel zu tun, und am Dienstag kommen die ersten Truthahnjaeger. Hoffentlich komme ich jetzt wieder dazu, mehr mit den Pferden zu arbeiten.

We are quite busy and on Tuesday, the first turkey hunters will arrive. Hopefull I will get more time soon to work with the horses.

Thanksgiving und ein Besuch im Mormonenstaat / Thanksgiving and a visit in the Mormon state

Am Mittwoch fuhren Nick und ich von Hulett im Nordosten Wyomings zehn Stunden lang nach Evanston im Suedwesten des Bundestaates ... nicht allzu stressig, denn Staus gibt es ja in Wyoming nicht ;-) Brandons Eltern Mike und Kathy hatten uns zu Thanksgiving eingeladen, dem wahrscheinlich wichtigsten Familienfest in den USA - immer am letzten Donnerstag im November. Traditionell gibt es gebratenen Truthahn, Suesskartoffeln, Stuffing, Cranberry-Sauce, Gruene-Bohnen-Kasserole, Kuerbiskuchen und und und. Brandon, Brandy, Emmett und Garrett waren auch dort, ebenso Brandons Brueder und ihre Familien.

On Wednesday, Nick and I drove ten hours from Hulett in Northeastern Wyoming to Evanston in the Southwestern part of the state ... not very stressful since there are no traffic jams in Wyoming ;-) Brandon's parents Mike and Kathy had invited us for Thanksgiving - probably the US' most important family celebration, always on the last Thursday of November. Traditional foods are roasted turkey, sweet potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, pumpkin pie and and and. Brandon, Brandy, Emmett and Garrett were there as well as were Brandon's brothers and their families.

Am Tag nach Thanksgiving machten Nick und ich uns auf nach Salt Lake City in Utah, nur ca. zwei Stunden entfernt. Wir wollten uns die von Mormonen gegruendete Stadt und ihre Umgebung anschauen. Salt Lake City ist von hohen Bergen eingerahmt, die 2006 Schauplatz der Olympischen Winterspiele waren. Wir haben uns die Stadt erwandert. Besonders beeindruckend ist der aus Granit erbaute Tempel der Mormonen, zu dem Nicht-Mormonen aber keinen Zugang haben. Die Polygamie wurde offiziell schon laengst abgeschafft, u.a. weil die USA Utah anonsten nicht als eigenstaendigen Bundesstaat anerkannt haette, aber von einer Gleichberechtigung der Geschlechter kann in der mormonischen Kirche trotzdem nicht die Rede sein. Jeder, wie er oder sie es mag.

The day after Thanksgiving Nick and I drove to Salt Lake City in Utah, just about two hours from Evanston. We wanted to visit the Mormon city and its surrounding area. Salt Lake City is framed by high mountains which in 2006 were the site of the Winter Olympic Games. We walked through most of downtown. The granite temple is especially impressive but non-Mormons are not allowed to enter it. Polygamy for which Mormons are still somewhat (in)famous has officially been abolished a long time ago, also because the United States would not have accepted Utah's application to become a state of the union. Now, to say that today the genders have equal rights in the Mormon church, would be a bit of a stretch. Each to his or her own I guess.

Wir haben die Annehmlichkeiten einer groesseren Stadt genossen und uns am naechsten Tag auf den Weg nach Antelope Island gemacht, einer Insel im Grossen Salzsee Utahs. Dieser See wird von zahlreichen Fluessen gespeist, hat aber keinen Abfluss, so dass das Wasser verdunstet, die vielen Mineralien sich aber ansammeln - ein wahres Paradies fuer alle Arten von Voegeln. Auf Antelope Island haben wir uns eine historische Ranch angeschaut und Ideen gesammelt, die unsere Ranch mehr autark machen, d.h. unabhaengiger von den Segnungen der modernen Welt ... manchmal muss man dafuer nur ein bisschen in die Vergangenheit gehen.

After enjoying the amenities of a big city, the next day we left for Antelope Island situated in Utah's Great Salt Lake. The Lake is fed by various rivers but does not have an outlet. The water evaporates, leaving the minerals to accumulate in the lake. A paradise for many kinds of birds. We visited a historic ranch on the island and gathered some ideas on how to live more independently from the blessings of the modern world ... sometimes one just has to go back in time.

Auf der Insel gibt es viele Antilopen und seit 1893 auch Bisons, die per Schiff auf das Eiland gebracht wurden. Rinder und Schafe gibt es nicht mehr, aber Pferde sieht man gluecklicherweise noch ... wenn auch nur als Reittiere fuer touristische Exkursionen. Mittags haben wir uns wieder auf den Weg nach Hulett gemacht, das wir um Mitternacht erreichten. Wir wollten noch einige Aussenarbeiten erledigen, bevor es am Dienstag kalt wird ... am Donnerstag soll es tagsueber nur minus 15 Grad Celsius werden ... nach einigen wunderschoenen milden Herbstwochen.

There are many antelope on the island and since 1893 bison as well. They were brought to the island by ship. Cattle and sheep are long gone but one still sees some horses ... even though just as mounts for touristic excursions. At noon we headed back home where we arrived at about midnight. We wanted to get some chores done before it is getting cold on Tuesday ... on Thursday we are expecting 0 degrees Fahrenheit - during the day. And that after quite a few mild and beautiful fall weeks.

Da es momentan wenig schneit, die Reservoirs aber gefroren sind, hatte Nick die Idee, Wasser in einem Schlauch ueber einen Damm in einen Canyon zu leiten, damit die Pferde und Rinder trinken koennen. Fuellt man den Schlauch mit Wasser, verankert ein Schlauchende im See und legt das andere Schlauchende tiefer, dann hoert das Wasser nicht auf zu fliessen, und fliessendes Wasser friert bekanntlich nicht so schnell ;-)

Since it does not snow much right now and the reservoirs are frozen, Nick had the idea to siphon water in a hose across a dam into a canyon so the horses and cattle can drink. If you fill a hose with water, keep one end in the reservoir and the other end lower than that, the water does not stop flowing and flowing water - as is well-known - does not freeze that easily ;-)

Nachdem wir endlich unsere Steuererklaerung eingereicht hatten, machten Nick und ich uns auf den Weg nach Montana, um Brandy, Brandon, Emmett und Garrett auf ihrer Ranch in der endlosen Praerie noerdlich von Miles City zu besuchen. Amanda (aus Schweden) war auch noch da. Mittlerweile geniessen Scotch, Patch, KC und Chica dort ihren Lebensabend. Sie werden noch geritten, aber nicht mehr so hart wie bei uns, wo sie oefter und laenger in schwierigem Gelaende arbeiten mussten. 

After finally getting our income tax return done, Nick and I drove to Montana to visit Brandy, Brandon, Emmett and Garrett on their ranch in the endless prairie North of Miles City. Amanda (from Sweden) was still there as well. Meanwhile Scotch, Patch, KC and Chica are enjoying their retirement there. They are still being ridden but not as hard as on our place where they had to work more often and longer in difficult terrain.

Nick und ich haben dann noch einen Tag in Billings angehaengt, wo wir eine Viehausstellung besucht haben. Kaum zu Hause, fragte Nachbar Will an, ob wir ihm bei der Rinderarbeit helfen koennten. Heike hatte Langeweile und schloss sich uns an. Eigentlich hatte ich mit einem Tag auf dem Sofa und einem neuen Buch geliebaeugelt, aber dann hat der Ritt trotz Kaelte, Wind und etwas Regen und Schnee Spass gebracht. Abends haben wir uns in der Lodge aufgewaermt und Anjas Spaetzle gegessen. Eigentlich ein schoener Sonntag!

Nick and I added a day in Billings where we visited The NILE (Northern International Livestock Exposition). Barely home, neighbor Will asked us to help him with cattle work. Heike was bored and joined us. I had thought about a day on the sofa with a new book but then the ride was quite fun despite the cold, wind and some rain and snow. In the evening we warmed up in the lodge and ate Anja's "Spaetzle" (German pasta dish). Actually a nice Sunday!

Ab Morgen soll es wieder waermer werden. Wird auch Zeit. Einen richtigen Herbst haben wir dieses Jahr bisher kaum gehabt.

From tomorrow on it's supposed to get warmer again. High time! This year, we haven't had a real fall, yet.
