Fuer alle, die es interessiert:  Ich moechte an den Blog vom 20. Juni anschliessen und in den kommenden Wochen das Jahr 2014 noch einmal Revue passieren lassen. Nach einem regenreichen Fruehling sind wir mit viel gruenem Gras in den Sommer gestartet. Juni war der Monat der Tierbabies, der Brandings und Rodeos. Und Ende des Monats haben Antje und ich mit Twister und Bruno an einem Parelli-Horsemanship-Seminar teilgenommen – ein Highlight wie jedes Jahr. Antje hat uns auch dabei geholfen, „Baby“ Chester weiter auszubilden. Der huebsche Kastanienfuchs hat bisher noch kein einziges Mal daran gedacht zu bocken und laesst sich durch kaum etwas aus der Ruhe bringen. Unser neues Pferd, Frodo, wurde nach einer kurzen Einarbeitungszeit schnell zu einem der beliebtesten Pferde fuer nicht so erfahrene Reiter ... auf ihn ist Verlass ... und er reitet sich wie ein Sofa ;-) Dafuer haben wir unseren geliebten Snickers verloren: Er hatte Kolik, und der Tierarzt konnte nichts mehr fuer ihn tun.

For those who are interested: I am catching up with my blog from June 20 and will sum up the year of 2014 within the next few weeks. After a rainy spring we started into the summer with lots of green grass. June was the month of baby animal, brandings and rodeos. And at the end of the month Antje and I took Twister and Bruno to participate in a Parelli Horsemanship Clinic - a highlight as in every year. Antje also helped with the ongoing training of "baby" Chester. The pretty chestnut has never thought of bucking, yet and keeps his cool in almost every circumstance. After only a very short time, our new horse, Frodo, became a favorite with the not so experienced guests ... you can rely on him ... and he rides like a sofa ;-) The saddest thing that happened: We lost our beloved Snickers. He had a colic and the vet could not help him anymore.

Wyoming-Winter sind nichts fuer Weicheier / Wyoming winters are not for sissies

Trotz der Kaelte haben die Pferde jetzt Zecken - dafuer aber im Sommer nicht mehr
(hier kratzen sich Leftie und Poncho gegenseitig). /
Despite the cold the horses have ticks now - but not in summer anymore
(you see Leftie and Poncho scratching each other).

Entweder ist es richtig kalt, oder es ist waermer und schneit, und dann gibt es die wenigen Tage, wo es ueber null ist und alles zu einer schoenen Eisflaeche gefriert, auf der man sich die Beine brechen kann. Das gilt fuer Mensch und Tier.

Either it is really cold or it's a touch warmer and snows. And then there are the few days in between when it's not freezing and the snow melts ... and then freezes again as solid ice. Perfect to break one's legs. That applies to both humans and animals.

Unsere neue (sprich restaurierte) Cabin fuer Reitgaeste sieht immer wohnlicher aus. Wasser, Abwasser, elektrische Leitungen sind drin. Waende und Decken. Tueren und Fenster. Wir haben isoliert bzw. gechinkt. Kueche und Bad stehen, aber wir muessen noch streichen, den Holzofen einbauen, moeblieren etc. Nick macht die Hauptarbeit, ich helfe ab und an. Fotos folgen bald.

Our new (well, renovated) cabin for riding guests starts to look more habitable. Plumbing and electrical lines are done. As are walls and ceilings. Doors and windows. We insulated and chinked it. Kitchen and bath room are in but we still have to paint, put the wood stove in, furniture etc. Nick does most of the work, I help once in a while. Pics will follow soon.

Abwechslung im Winter? Wenn wir nicht arbeiten oder etwas mit den Tieren unternehmen (mehr ich als Nick), lesen wir. Fernsehempfang haben wir nicht, aber wir schauen ab und an DVDs. Und ich beschaeftige mich mit Parelli Natural Horsemanship (Buecher, Zeitschriften, DVDs). Dafuer geht Nick hin und wieder joggen. Wer viel Ablenkung braucht, ueberlebt den Wyoming-Winter nicht ;-)

Winter distractions? When we don't work or play with the critters (more me than Nick), we read. We don't have TV reception but we watch DVDs here and there. And I study Parelli Natural Horsemanship (books, magazines, DVDs). Nick goes jogging. If you need a lot of entertainment, you won't survive a Wyoming winter ;-)

War gestern mit Heike in der Ponderosa Bar in Hulett, um endlich mal wieder einen Burger zu essen. Entweder man (sprich Frau) kocht selbst, wird von Schwiegermutter JoAnn eingeladen oder muss in die Stadt fahren. Bestellen geht ja leider nicht ;-)

Yesterday, Heike and I met at the Ponderosa Bar in Hulett to eat burgers. You (meaning woman) either cook, have your mother-in-law JoAnn invite you or go to town. No delivery service out here ;-)

Gauge vermisst Penny und freut sich auf Sip, der ja im April wieder mit Lance auf die Ranch kommen wird. Bis dahin muss sich unser Labrador mit den Katzen abgeben ... besser als nichts ...

Gauge is missing Penny and is looking forward to Sip who'll return to the ranch with Lance in April. Till then our Labrador will have to do with the cats ... better than nothing ...

Wir freuen uns auf unseren baldigen "Sommerurlaub" in Deutschland und Irland. Phillip, der mit seiner Familie diesen Winter ueber auf der Ranch wohnt, wird sich um Ranch und Tiere kuemmern. Er hat schon eine mehrseitige Liste mit Anweisungen bekommen, aber ich glaube nicht, dass er morgens laut "Kittie, kittie, kittie" rufen wird (dann kommen die Katzen) ... das ist dann doch etwas zu viel verlangt von einem Cowboy :-)

We are looking forward to our imminent "summer vacation" in Germany and Ireland. Phillip who lives on the ranch with his family this winter will take care of the ranch and the animals. He already got a long list with chores but I don't think he will call the cats in the morning with "kittie, kittie, kittie" ... that's asking a bit too much of a cowboy ;-)

Immer noch Winter / Still winter

Kommt mir das nur so vor, oder vergeht die Zeit immer schneller je aelter man wird? Wir haben einem Nachbarn bei der Rinderarbeit geholfen (es war ausnahmsweise mal nicht so kalt), haben Freunde - Lynette und Rick - auf einer Ranch westlich von uns besucht, die auch Parelli Horsemanship praktizieren, waren mit Heike auf der Black Hills Viehschau in Rapid City (www.blackhillsstockshow.com), wo wir auch die hochschwangere Romina und ihren Mann Nick trafen, haben die Pferde von der Winterweide zurueck zur Ranch gebracht, um sie ab jetzt mit Heu zu fuettern, haben fleissig an der Teacher Cabin gearbeitet, um sie rechtzeitig zur Reitsaison fuer Gaeste fertig zu stellen, und, und, und.

Does that just happen to me or is time flying by faster when one gets older? We helped a neighbor move cattle (it wasn't that cold for a change), visited friends - Lynette and Rick - on a ranch further west from us who also practice Parelli Natural Horsemanship, went to the Black Hills Stock Show in Rapid City with Heike (www.blackhillsstockshow.com) where we also met a very pregnant Romina and her husband Nick, moved the horses from the winter pasture back to the ranch to start feeding them with hay, worked lots of hours on the Teacher Cabin to get it ready for our riding guests and and and.

Ich war heute uebrigens draussen und habe ein Foto von jedem unserer 38 Pferde - plus Esel - geschossen. Zu sehen auf unserer Facebook-Seite www.facebook.com/thenewhavenranch! Unsere Webseite ist leider nicht ganz aktuell. Und einige Pferde sind mit ihrem Plueschfell und teilweise anderen Farben im Winter gar nicht wiederzuerkennen.

Today I went out to take a photo of everyone of our 38 horses - plus donkey. You can see them on our facebook page www.facebook.com/thenewhavenranch! Our website is - unfortunately - not totally up-to-date. Some of the horses are barely recognizable due to their teddy furs and different colors in winter.

Was die Buchungen fuer die naechste Saison angeht: Es gibt noch einige wenige Plaetze im Mai und in der zweiten Julihaelfte sowie ab Mitte September. Juni, die erste Julihaelfte und August sind fast bis ganz ausgebucht. Meldet Euch, falls Ihr dieses Jahr noch kommen wollt.

As for bookings for the coming season: There are a few spots left in May, the second half of July and after mid-September. June, the first half of July and August are almost or totally booked out. Let me know if you are still planning on coming this year.

Nick und ich werden diesen Winter tatsaechlich noch mal verreisen: eine Woche Deutschland und dann noch eine Woche Irland. Nicks Wurzeln sind zwar fast ausschliesslich deutsch, aber die paar Prozent irisches Blut scheinen staerker zu sein, wenn man seiner Haarfarbe und seinem Temperament nach urteilen darf ;-)

Nick and I will still travel this winter: one week Germany and one week Ireland. Nick's roots are mostly German but the few drops of Irish blood seem to be stronger if you can judge by his hair color and temperament ;-)

Anne-Marie und ich sind gerade von einem 5-taegigen Parelli Natural Horsemanship-Seminar in Sheridan zurueckgekehrt. Wir hatten Bruno und Honey, unsere neue braune Stute (danke fuer all die Namensvorschlaege), sowie Dun It fuer Kursleiter Dave Ellis dabei. Es hat viel Spass gebracht, und unsere Koepfe rauchen noch. Heike, danke fuer den Anhaenger!

Anne-Marie and I have just returned from a 5-day Parelli Natural Horsemanship clinic in Sheridan. We took Bruno and Honey along, our new bay mare (thanks for all the name suggestions), as well as Dun It for clinician Dave Ellis. It was a lot of fun and there is still smoke coming out of our heads. Heike, thanks for the trailer!

Mittlerweile sind Urs und Manuel abgereist, dafuer sind nun Zoe und Rachel aus England auf der Ranch. Anne-Maries Mann Chris ist am Wochenende zusammen mit seinem Bruder auf den Devils Tower geklettert ... Glueckwunsch! Hatte eigentlich schon vor Tagen einen laengeren Blog geschrieben, der aber im Online-Nirwana verschwunden ist. Jetzt heisst es erstmal mit der Bueroarbeit aufzuholen! Anbei aber noch ein paar Fotos von einem Ritt vor unserer Abreise ...
