"Lucky Dan"

Red, die Longhornkuh, hat es leider nicht geschafft, dafuer aber ihr Beefalo-Kalb "Lucky Dan" (d.h. "Dan, der noch mal Glueck gehabt hat"), hier mit seinem Namensgeber und Retter Dan und Carlotta (in neuen Cowboyboots), die jetzt Kaelber-Ersatzmutter ist. Mehr ueber "Lucky Dan", Red und unsere Neuankoemmlinge Heidi, Carlotta, Sylvia, Dominik, Jim und Alden im naechsten Blog. Jetzt geht es erst mal zum Rindertreiben.

Red, our longhorn cow, did not make it but her beefalo calf "Lucky Dan" did, here with his namegiver and rescuer Dan and Carlotta (in new cowboy boots) who is now the calf's replacement mother. More about "Lucky Dan", Red and our new arrivals Heidi, Carlotta, Sylvia, Dominik, Jim and Alden in the next blog. Now we have to move cattle.

Bernadette

Es ist immer noch sehr warm, aber viel stiller, als es im Sommer ist. Gauge und ich sind heute einfach eine Stunde auf unserer Porch gesessen und haben in die Landschaft geguckt ... kaum mehr Gruen, dafuer alle Schattierungen von Rot, Gelb und Brauntoenen.

It is still very warm but a lot more quiet than in summer. Gauge and I just sat on the porch for an hour watching the landscape ... less green and much more red, yellow and shades of brown.

Lisa und Diane sind abgereist, Petra und Anne (aus Deutschland) sind angekommen. Unsere Antilopenjaeger, James und LeRoy, haben ihre Boecke geschossen und waren heute Forellenfischen. Nick und Shannon, unser neuer Schreiner, sind dabei, das Lodge-Dach fertig zu decken. Die "Maedels" - Heike, Anke, Petra und Anne - sind reiten.

Lisa and Diane have left, Petra and Anne arrived (from Germany). Our antilope hunters, James and LeRoy, shot their bucks and are trout fishing today. Nick and Shannon, our new carpenter, are about to finish shingling the lodge roof. The "girls" - Heike, Anke, Petra and Anne - are out riding.

Anbei ein Bild von Bernadette, unserem Beefalo-Kalb ... sie hat sich sehr veraendert und sieht nun wirklich seltsam aus ... nicht wirklich Bueffel und nicht wirklich Kuh.

Juniors letzter Tag / Juniors last day

Gestern ist er mal wieder ueber den Zaun gesprungen und hat dieses Mal auch ein Pferd, Pinkerton, mit seinen Hoernern verletzt. Junior war nicht aggressiv, er war einfach nur ein Bueffelbulle, und Bueffelbullen kommunizieren eben eher auf die ruede Art. Damit nicht mehr Pferde und womoeglich auch irgendwann Menschen Schaden nehmen, hat Nick Junior heute morgen auf der Weide erschossen. Genickschuss. Gefolgt von einem Herzschuss, um die Sache zu beschleunigen.

Yesterday he jumped the fence again and this time he also injured a horse, Pinkerton, with his horns. Junior was not aggressive, he was just a buffalo bull and buffalo bulls just don't ask nicely. In order to keep the horses and last but not least people safe, Nick shot Junior this morning on pasture. A shot into his neck followed by a heart shot to speed things up.

Hier seht Ihr Anthony, der den Bueffel ausweidet, Gary hilft ihm. Daneben Brandy und Emmett. Nick lud Junior danach auf den Traktor und von dort aus auf den Pick-up, damit Anthony und Jo ihn zum Schlachter nach Belle Fourche fahren konnten.

Here you see Anthony gutting the buffalo, Gary is helping him. Next to them Brandy and Emmett. Nick loaded Junior onto the tractor and from there on onto the pick-up so Anthony and Jo could drive him to the butcher in Belle Fourche.

Hier machen sich alle lustig ueber mich, aber der Tod eines Tieres macht mich immer traurig, insbesondere wenn es ein so beeindruckendes Tier ist wie Junior. Unten seht Ihr seine Tochter, Bernadette, die immer mehr wie ein Beefalo aussieht.

Here everyone is making fun of me but the death of an animal always saddens me especially if it is such an impressive one like Junior. Below you see his daughter, Bernadette. She looks more like a beefalo now.

Bernadette ist da / Bernadette is there

Langes, welliges hellbraunes Fell, ein sich nach hinten verjuengender Koerper und falls das noch nicht genug ist, ein dicker, kurzer flauschiger Bueffelschwanz ... das Beeffalo ist da. Und ihr Name ist Bernadette.

Long wavy light brown fur, a sloping back and lighter hind and if that is not enough, a short, thick and fluffy buffalo tail ... the beeffalo has arrived. And her name is Bernadette.

Wir sind noch nicht ganz sicher - Bernadettes Mama (hier noch mit Nachgeburt) laesst uns nicht so einfach an ihr Baby ran - aber das Beeffalo scheint ein Maedel zu sein.

We are not totally sure, yet - Bernadette's mother (here still with afterbirth) won't let us touch her baby - but the beeffalo seems to be a girl.

Die Geburt war einfach, was bei Faersen keine Selbstverstanedlichkeit ist (mehr dazu spaeter), aber Bernadettes Mama ist zur Haelfte Longhorn, und die kalben wie bereits berichtet einfacher. Beeffalos sind meist unfruchtbar - wie Maultiere und Maulesel, Kreuzungen aus Pferden und Eseln.

The birth was easy which is not always the case with heifers (more about that later) but Bernadette's mom is half Longhorn and they calve more easily as I have already told you. Beeffalos are mostly infertile - like mules, crosses between horses and donkeys.

Vater Junior ist wenig an seinem Nachwuchs interessiert, dafuer Bueffeltante Daisy umso mehr. Ich halte Euch auf dem Laufenden ... mit der Zeit wird Bernie noch deutlicher einem Bueffel aehnlich werden.

Father Junior is not very interested in his offspring but buffalo aunt Daisy is thrilled. I will keep you posted ... with time Bernie will look more like a buffalo.

Was ist ein Beeffalo? / What is a beeffalo?

Und schon wieder Cinderella: Waehrend Mama sie verzweifelt sucht, treibt sich Toechterchen bei den Pferden herum (hier Classy und Patch). Im Hintergund die Lodge.

Mike, der neue Wrangler, und sein Hund Stubby (ein Corgi) sind angekommen. Mike hat die Ranch im Dunkeln nur dank GPS gefunden. Er ist genauso wie wir von Natural Horsemanship ueberzeugt ... wir freuen uns schon auf die Zusammenarbeit mit ihm.

Mike, the new wrangler, and his dog Stubby (a corgi) have arrived. Thanks to his GPS Mike managed to find the ranch in the dark. Like us he is convinced of Natural Horsemanship ... and we are looking forward to working with him.

Wir warten nun auf die Ankunft unseres ersten Beeffalos (Kreuzung zwischen Rind und Bison): Eine Faerse ist tragend, und falls es nicht Nachbars Bulle war, dann ist Bueffel Junior aktiv geworden. Denn wir haben den offiziellen Deckbullen erst Ende Juli in unsere Herde eingefuehrt, zu spaet fuer eine Februar-Geburt.

Now we are waiting for the arrival of our first beeffalo (cross of cattle and bison): A heifer is pregnant and if it wasn't the neighbor's bull, then Junior must have been active. We brought the official breeding bull into the herd at the end of July, too late for a birth in February.
