Chicks, Tequila und/and Cattle Drives

Am Sonntagmorgen bekam ich einen Anruf vom Postamt in Gillette: Ihre Huehnerkueken sind da! Also schnell drei Stunden Fahrt auf der Schotterpiste durch die Prairie. Eigentlich sollten die Kueken nach Hulett geliefert werden, aber ich war nicht sicher, ob sie weitere 24 Stunden (bis Montagmorgen) ohne Wasser und Futter ueberlebt haetten. Die Kleinen sollen unser bestehendes Huehnerteam verstaerken. Eier werden sie aber erst in sechs Monaten legen. Solange muessen die anderen noch allein produzieren. Die sechs Haehne sind zwar huebsch, aber nutzlos.

On Sunday morning I got a phone call from the post office in Gillette: Your chicks are here! Means three hours driving on gravel road across the prairie. Actually the chicks were supposed to be picked up in Hulett but I was not sure if they would survive another 24 hours (till Monday morning) without water and feed. The little ones are going to support our current hen team. But it will take about six months till they lay eggs. Till then the other girls have to produce. The six roosters are pretty but useless.

Am Samstag waren wir auf einer Pferdeauktion (war zu faul, um Fotos zu machen) - nur zur Unterhaltung ... wir haben ja bereits 40 Pferde. Und bei Auktionen wird man zu oft hereingelegt, in der Hinsicht herrscht hier wirklich noch der Wilde Westen! Heike hat natuerlich trotzdem zugeschlagen und drei Jungpferde gekauft. Und das, obwohl ihr gerade der Teil eines Fingers amputiert werden musste. Calamity Jane (wie sie hier auch heisst) hat ihre Hand zwischen Seil und Trailer gehabt, als das Pferd anzog. Das Foto gehoert in einen Splatter-Movie, das kann ich Euch hier nicht zeigen.

On Saturday we went to a horse sale (was too lazy to take pics) - just for fun ... since we already have 40 horses. And our experience with horse sales is that most times you get cheated, in that way this is certainly still the Wild West! Heike could not resist (of course) and bought three young horses. Even though the doctors just amputed part of her left ring finger. Calamity Jane (as she is known as well) had her hand between the rope and the trailer when a horse pulled back. The photo of her hand belongs into a splatter movie, I won't show it here.

Nachdem unser Bueffel Daisy gestorben war, haben wir nun ein Bueffelkalb gekauft. Ihr Name ist Tequila, weil wir mit dem Verkaeufer auf den Kauf angestossen haben. Und Tequila laeuft auch ein bisschen so, als ob sie zu tief ins Glas geschaut haette. Wir hoffen, dass aus dem haesslichen Entlein noch ein huebscher Bueffel wird. Und ich sollte Bison sagen, denn das ist der korrekte Ausdruck.

After our buffalo Daisy had died, we bought a new buffalo calf. Her name is Tequila because the owner offered each of us one. Also Tequila runs in a funny way as if she is slightly drunk. We hope that the ugly duckling will become a beautiful buffalo one day. I should say bison which is the correct expression.

Die neuen Pferde machen sich (ja, ich muss auch die Webseite aktualisieren), nur Chuck ist noch lahm. Fohlen Chester (das Wollmammuth) verliert endlich sein Winterfell. Und Buster geht es auch besser, aber bei Beckenbruechen muss man sehr geduldig sein.

The new horses are doing well (yes, I definitely have to update the webpage), only Chuck is still lame. Colt Chester (the wolly mammoth) is finally losing his winter fur. And Buster is doing better but with pelvis fractures one has to be patient.

Am Dienstag (oder Mittwoch?) haben wir unseren Nachbarn geholfen, ca. 1000 Jaehrlingsrinder auf die Sommerkoppel zu bringen. Ein herrlicher (ca. 4-stuendiger) Ritt mit feschen Cowboys, einigen Klapperschlangen und viel Staub. Ich bin Frost geritten, der mich wieder gut durchgeschuettelt hat. Ein Pferd fuer Englischreiter, die einen schwungvollen Trab gewoehnt sind.

On Tuesday (or Wednesday?) we helped our neighbors move about 1000 yearling cattle onto summer pasture. A fun (4 hour) ride with dashing cowboys, some rattle snakes and lots of dust. I rode Frost whose trot is so rough that I felt like being on a bucking bull. A horse for English riders who are used to swinging gaits.

Die Truthahnsaison geht ihrem Ende zu, die Reitsaison beginnt am Samstag, eventuell gleich mit einem Branding.

The turkey season is about to end, the riding season is beginning on Saturday, maybe with a branding.

Juniors letzter Tag / Juniors last day

Gestern ist er mal wieder ueber den Zaun gesprungen und hat dieses Mal auch ein Pferd, Pinkerton, mit seinen Hoernern verletzt. Junior war nicht aggressiv, er war einfach nur ein Bueffelbulle, und Bueffelbullen kommunizieren eben eher auf die ruede Art. Damit nicht mehr Pferde und womoeglich auch irgendwann Menschen Schaden nehmen, hat Nick Junior heute morgen auf der Weide erschossen. Genickschuss. Gefolgt von einem Herzschuss, um die Sache zu beschleunigen.

Yesterday he jumped the fence again and this time he also injured a horse, Pinkerton, with his horns. Junior was not aggressive, he was just a buffalo bull and buffalo bulls just don't ask nicely. In order to keep the horses and last but not least people safe, Nick shot Junior this morning on pasture. A shot into his neck followed by a heart shot to speed things up.

Hier seht Ihr Anthony, der den Bueffel ausweidet, Gary hilft ihm. Daneben Brandy und Emmett. Nick lud Junior danach auf den Traktor und von dort aus auf den Pick-up, damit Anthony und Jo ihn zum Schlachter nach Belle Fourche fahren konnten.

Here you see Anthony gutting the buffalo, Gary is helping him. Next to them Brandy and Emmett. Nick loaded Junior onto the tractor and from there on onto the pick-up so Anthony and Jo could drive him to the butcher in Belle Fourche.

Hier machen sich alle lustig ueber mich, aber der Tod eines Tieres macht mich immer traurig, insbesondere wenn es ein so beeindruckendes Tier ist wie Junior. Unten seht Ihr seine Tochter, Bernadette, die immer mehr wie ein Beefalo aussieht.

Here everyone is making fun of me but the death of an animal always saddens me especially if it is such an impressive one like Junior. Below you see his daughter, Bernadette. She looks more like a beefalo now.

Der mit dem Bueffel tanzt / Dances with buffalos

Heute morgen kam unser Nachbar Jim Bob vorbei, um mir eine CD mit Fotos zu bringen, die er dieses Jahr von seinen Bueffeln (Bisons) gemacht hat. Hier seht Ihr eines aus dem Winter und eines mit Kaelbern aus dem Sommer.

This morning our neighbor Jim Bob stopped by to drop off a CD with photos of his buffalos (bison) which he took this year. Here you can see one picture from winter and one with calves from summer.

Zusammen mit Jim Bob wollen wir in der Saison 2010 Ritte durch seine Bueffelherde anbieten. Ueber die Details muessen wir noch sprechen, da Bueffel nicht ganz ungefaehrlich sind. Wir haben zwar auch zwei Bueffel (Daisy und Junior), aber eine ganze Herde dieser riesigen Tiere ist noch viel beeindruckender. Ich freue mich jetzt schon darauf.

Together with Jim Bob we want to offer rides through his buffalo herd for the 2010 season. We still have to discuss the details because buffalos are dangerous. We have buffalos as well (Daisy and Junior) but a whole herd of these huge animals is even more impressive. I am already looking forward to it.
