Yeehaw!

Auf der Ranch merken wir von der beruehmten Sturgis Motorrad-Ralley nichts, aber an einem Tag haben wir uns mit unseren Gaesten unter die Massen begeben, was dann auch sehr unterhaltsam war, siehe Foto unten.

On the ranch we don't notice the famous Sturgis motorcycle rally but for one day we and our guests joined the masses which turned out to be quite entertaining as the photo below shows.

Mit tatkraeftiger Hilfe von Anne-Marie aus England und den schwedischen Schwestern Linda und Sandra hat Nick begonnen, Leftie „einzufahren“ (Foto s.u.). Im Fruehjahr hatten wir bereits Geschirr und einen Wagen von den Amish gekauft. So einfach, wie es ausschaut, ist es dann doch nicht, aber Leftie macht (fast) alles mit ... und traegt sogar vier kichernde Frauen mit Fassung (Foto s.u.).

With hands-on help from Brit Anne-Marie and Swedish sisters Linda and Sandra Nick started to "drive" Leftie (photo below). In spring we had already bought the harness and cart from the Amish. It's not exactly as easy as it looks but Leftie was game for (almost) anything ... and even carried four giggling women without freaking out (photo below).

Die Fotos sind ein Querschnitt durch unsere August-Arbeit in den Bergen und in der Prairie. Und ein paar Brandings gab es auch noch. Sandy aus New Hampshire forderte Nick zu einem barrel Race heraus: sie auf dem Pferd, Nick auf dem Motorrad. Nick gewann knapp, aber nur weil er geschummelt hatte. The pics are a cross section of our August work in the hills and in the prairie. And we had another few brandings. Sandy from New Hampshire challenged Nick to barrel race with her: she on a horse and he on his dirt bike. Nick won but barely and only because he cheated. Nach sieben Wochen Trockenheit hat es tatsaechlich eine Nacht geregnet ... aber inzwischen klettern die Temperaturen wieder auf 40 Grad. Deshalb haben wir die Schafe in der Praerie erst gegen Abend bis in die Nacht getrieben, und das Docking begann schon morgens um 5 Uhr.

After seven weeks of dry heat it finally rained for one night ... but the temps are up to 100 degrees again now. Thus, we moved the sheep on the prairie in the evening and into the night, and the docking started at 5 in the morning.

Beim Docking werden die neuen Laemmer geimpft, die Hoden und Schwaenze abgebunden und bei den Maennchen ein Teil des Ohrs abgeschnitten, damit man sie spaeter leicht von den Weibchen unterscheiden kann. Die arme Lisa musste Hunderte von Ohren kuerzen und hat sich tapfer gehalten.

At a docking the new lambs are vaccinated, the testicles and tails are banded and the tips of the wether's ears are cut off so one can distinguish them easier from the ewes later. Poor Lisa had to cut of hundreds of ear tips but kept going bravely.

Am 4. Juli, dem amerikanischen Unabhaengigkeitstag, waren wir natuerlich beim Rodeo. Das Feuerwerk am Devils Tower fiel wegen Feuergefahr aus.

On July 4 , the US' day of independence, we visited a rodeo. The fireworks at Devils Tower were canceled due to fire danger.

Ich kann vor Hitze gar nicht mehr denken, aber morgen soll es endlich etwas abkuehlen. Ueber Regen - wie in Europa - kann sich hier (leider!) keiner beklagen. Wir haben gut zu tun. An einem Tag haben wir einem Nachbarn geholfen, wo die Haenge so steil waren, dass sogar Nick abgestiegen ist. Am Tag danach sind wir nach Sued Dakota gefahren, um Rinder in der weiten Praerie zu treiben.

My brain is drying out, I cannot think in this heat anymore. It's supposed to be cooler tomorrow. ]Unfortunately, we cannot complain about too much rain - as in Europe. We are quite busy. One day we helped a neighbor where the slopes were so steep that even Nick got off the horse. Another day we moved cattle in the open prairie of South Dakota.

Brandings, Schiessen, Team Penning, Ropen ... und kleine Tierbabies ueberall. Nicks Toechter und Enkel sind abgereist, auch Kathrin, Oli, Claudia, Harri, Manuel und Urs. Toby, Anna und Silke sind noch da. Weiss gar nicht, was ich ohne Euch machen soll, wenn Ihr abreist. Neu dabei: Janice und Peter aus England, Robbie (lang, lang ist's her) und Tanja aus Deutschland. Und natuerlich lang ersehnt: Tine und Sabine.

Brandings, shooting, team penning, roping ... and lots of animal babies everywhere. Nick's daughters and grandkids have left, also Kathrin, Oli, Harri, Claudia, Manuel and Urs. Toby, Anna and Silke are still here. Don't know what to do when you guys leave. New: Janice and Peter from GB, Robbie (long time ago) and Tanja from Germany. And of course own Tine and Sabine.
