Viel Platz / Lots of space

Gluehende Hitze und kein Baum weit und breit ... das ist die Praerie! Wir mussten ca. 1000 Rinder treiben, die sich nicht sehr kooperativ zeigten und uns in Trab (und Galopp) hielten. Wir, das sind: Nick auf Poncho, Andy auf Newt, Claudia auf Pal, Klaus auf Buster, Heini auf Pep, Hannes auf Tucker, Sabine auf Chocolate, Gisela auf Juno, Silke auf Rena und ich auf Jazz. Brandon war auf dem ATV dabei. Fotos oben (Klaus) und unten.

Flaming heat and no tree in sight ... this is the prairie! We had to move 1,000 head of cattle which were not very co-operative and kept us trotting (and cantering). We, that is: Nick on Poncho, Andy on Newt, Claudia on Pal, Klaus on Buster, Heini on Pep, Hannes on Tucker, Sabine on Chocolate, Gisela on Juno, Silke on Rena, and I on Jazz. Mit dem Pferdekauf danach wurde es nichts, da die entsprechenden Pferde alle noch zu "gruen" waren. Waren um 21 Uhr zu Hause und alle hundemuede. Aber das Ranchleben geht weiter: Heute steht der naechste Viehtrieb bei uns auf New Haven an. Ausser fuer die Rancher, die auch mal wieder richtige Arbeit erledigen muessen ;-)

We did not buy any horses afterwards because they were still too green. Came home at 9 pm and were all tired. But ranch life goes on: today another cattle drive on New Haven. Only the ranchers cannot go, they have to do some real work ;-)

Cowboys und Indianer / Cowboys and Indians

Heute einfach mal ein paar vermischte Bilder, bevor ich Euch morgen unsere neuen Gaeste vorstelle. Wir werden in Sued-Dakota reiten und danach noch ein Pferd kaufen (oder mehrere). Die Heusaison ist beendet, und Nick und ich werden mitfahren und endlich mal wieder gemeinsam reiten.

Today some pics, I will present the new guests tomorrow. We'll be riding in South Dakota and hopefully buy a horse on the way home (or more). The hay season is finished and Nick and I will go, too and finally ride together again.

Allen geht es gut, sie haben heute morgen Nachbars Rinder aus den unserigen herausgecuttet. Heute Abend grillen wir am See. Das Wetter ist herrlich, sonnig, aber nicht zu heiss ... das gefaellt einer Norddeutschen wie mir ... nur gewisse Leute aus Frankfurt lieben Temperaturen ueber 30 Grad.

Everyone is fine, this morning they cut neighbor's cattle out of ours. This evening we'll be grilling at the lake. The weather is beautiful, sunny but not too hot ... enjoyable for a Northern German like me ... only some people in Frankfurt love temps over 90 degrees.

Oben seht Ihr, wie man ein Tipi professionell aufbaut (Brandy und Thomas) ... ob die Indianer das auch so machen? Danach ein Foto auf dem Weg zum Flughafen ... schaut Euch den Beifahrer ganz genau an! Dann folgt ein kleiner Cowboy for Ziegenherde. Und auf den letzten drei Bildern seht Ihr einige unserer hart arbeitenden Angestellten! Ach ja, und dann noch ein Foto mit Pferden ... Pferde?

Auf dem Dach Wyomings / On Wyoming's roof

Waehrend Anthony unsere neuen Gaeste, Klaus (war 2005 schon mal hier), seine Nichte Claudia und die Schweizer Hannes und Heini, einwies, wollte Silke Bodenarbeit mit Cody machen ... Also brachen Gisela, Sabine und ich allein auf auf einen wunderschoenen Ritt durch majestaetische Landschaft.

While Anthony introduced our new guests - Klaus (was here in 2005), his niece Claudia, and the Swiss Hannes and Heini - to the program, Silke prefered to do ground work with Cody ... So Gisela, Sabine and I took off for a beautiful ride across majestic nature.

Ich bin endlich mal wieder meinen Liebling Romes geritten. Von oben sieht er auch nicht haesslich aus ;-) Sabine ritt Chocolate, Gisela Juno. Fotos anbei.

I finally rode my darling Romes again. And from above he does not look ugly at all ;-) Sabine rode Chocolate, Gisela Juno. Photos attached.

Diese Woche fand auch die groesste Motorrad-Rally der Welt statt, die Sturgis-Rally, bei der hauptsaechlich Harley Davidson-Fahrer teilnehmen. Auf der Ranch merken wir nichts davon, aber die Strassen waren voll.

This week the world's biggest motorcycle rally took place, the Sturgis rally with mostly Harley Davidson riders. On the ranch one did not notice anything but the roads were full.

Heute Nachmittag waren alle unterwegs, zu Pferde natuerlich, um Zaeune abzubauen. Mal sehen, wie es ihnen ergangen ist ...

This afternoon everyone was out, on horseback, to take down fence. Have to see how they have been doing ...

Bergauf und bergab / Uphill and downhill

Alix und Manon (Foto ganz unten, bei den Ziegen, wo wir am vergangenen Samstag gearbeitet haben) sowie Caroline und Cristin mussten leider wieder abreisen.

Alix and Manon (photo on the bottom, with the goats that we worked last Saturday) as well as Caroline and Cristin unfortunately had to leave.

Dafuer sind Sabine (oben, auf Bailey), Gisela (zweites Bild , auf Grover) und Silke (drittes Bild, auf Tramp) angekommen. Wir mussten gleich unsere Rinder auf eine andere Koppel treiben ... bei all der Arbeit haben die Neuankoemmlinge schnell ihren Respekt vor dem schwierigen Terrain ueberwunden ... ihre Pferde zu Hause seien Weicheier, meinten sie spaeter.

Instead Sabine (photo above, on Bailey), Gisela (second pic, on Grover) and Silke (third pic, on Tramp) came. Wir had to move cattle on their first day ... faced with all that work they quickly lost their respect for the difficult terrain ... and later on called their own horses at home sissies.

Am Abend kam ein Gewitter auf ... Andreas und Michaela, die heute morgen abgereist sind, liessen sich gern vor der Panoramakulisse fotografieren. Zur Vergroesserung auf die Fotos klicken.

In the evening a thunderstorm moved in ... Andreas and Michaela, who left this morning, had their picture taken in front of this view. To enlarge photos, click on them.

Es ist gerade etwas abgekuehlt, 25 statt 35 Grad ... angenehm!

It just cooled down a bit, from the 90ies to the 70ies ... pleasant!

Wandern vor grosser Kulisse / Hiking in front of tall sights

Manchmal ist so viel zu tun, dass ich einfach nicht mehr dazu komme, den Blog zu schreiben. Seit Montag morgen um 5 Uhr bin ich mit dem Heuen fertig, Nick muss noch alle Ballen reinbringen.

Sometimes there is so much to do that I cannot keep up with my blog. Monday morning at 5 am I was finally done with haying. Nick still needs to get all the bales in.

Gestern nachmittag haben wir geropt, Cristin hat gewonnen (auf dem Fuchsschecken Bailey), aber Manon (auf dem Rappschecken Buster) und Alix (auf der braunen Stute Jazz) waren ihr ziemlich dicht auf den Fersen. Sonntag und Montag haben wir Rinder "geschoben", aber Sonntag nachmittag sind Cristin, Caroline, Michaela, Andreas (v.l.n.r.) und ich bei Gluthitze um den Devils Tower gewandert (s. Foto ganz oben). Manon und Alix wollten sich lieber im Reiten ohne Sattel ueben und ritten zum See, um zu schwimmen. Im Nachhinein sicher die bessere Idee ;-)

Yesterday afternoon we roped, Cristin won (on sorrel paint Bailey) followed closely by Manon (on black paint Buster) and Alix (on bay mare Jazz). Sunday and Monday we also moved cattle but Sunday afternoon Cristin, Caroline, Michaela, Andreas (from left to right) and I walked around Devils Tower in burning heat (photo above). Manon and Alix decided to ride bareback to the lake to go swimming. Probably a better idea if I think about it ;-)

Gary hat begonnen, unsere Getreidescheune wieder auf Vordermann zu bringen (s. Foto unten). Wir haben noch etliche Bauprojekte, um ihn auf Trab zu halten ;-)

Gary has started repair on our old corn barn (photo below). We have still many building projects to keep him going ;-)

Und dann war da noch Caroline, die Fahrunterricht von Nick erhielt ;-) Foto ebenfalls anbei.

Von der Praerie in die Canyons / From the prairie into the canyons

Donnerstagabend um 20 Uhr war ich endlich mit dem Maehen fertig, und es ist nichts passiert ... ausser ein paar gebrochener Sicheln. Jetzt nur noch ein paar Naechte Wenden, und die Heusaison ist fuer mich vorbei. Nick muss noch Ballen machen und diese dann in die Scheune bringen ... das dauert bei ca. 12.000 Stueck!

Thursday evening at 8 pm I was finally done with cutting hay. Nothing happened other than some broke sickel sections. Now just a few nights of raking and I will be done with haying for good. Nick still has to bale and bring the bales into the barn ... which takes some time with 12,000 pieces!

Unsere Gaeste waren in Sued-Dakota reiten, am Freitag stand dann wieder ein Viehtrieb bei uns an. Nach welliger baumloser Praerie nun wieder tiefe bewaldete Canyons. Waehrend Andreas und Michaela wieder auf Reisen gingen (dieses Mal Montana), konnte Kathleen sich nicht so ganz trennen und kam noch mal fuer einen Tag zum Reiten vorbei. Und das alles unter dunklen Gewitterwolken ... die dann wieder vorueberzogen. Horst, Silkes Mann und Svens Vater, reitet lieber Maschinen als Pferde, aber die entsprechenden Fotos sind noch in Silkes Kamera.

Our guests went riding in Sued-Dakota but on Friday we had another cattle drive in New Haven. After a rolling treeless prairie now deep timbered canyons. While Andreas and Michaela went sightseeing again (this time Montana), Kathleen could not really part and came back for another day of riding. And all that underneath dark thunder clouds ... which moved on. Horst, Silke's husband and Sven's father, prefers to ride machines instead of horses but the photos of that are still in Silke's camera.

Heute - samstags - sind alle am Devils Tower, um Brandon's and Brandy's Ziegen zu arbeiten. Details folgen.

Today - Saturday - everyone is at Devils Tower to work Brandon's and Brandy's goats. Details will follow.
