Bye bye!

Melanie und/and Leo

Die Saison ist zu Ende. Zuerst sind Carmen, Marty und Carol abgereist, spaeter - nach einem Viehtrieb bei schoenstem Wetter - auch Melanie, Ann-Catrin und ihr Freund Titus. Und Lance packt schon, um endlich wieder in die Waerme - sprich Florida - fahren zu koennen. Er will nach dem Winter wiederkommen.

The season has ended. First Carmen, Marty and Carol left and later - after a cattle drive in best weather - also Melanie, Ann-Catrin and her boyfriend Titus. Lance is already packing to drive back into the heat - that is Florida. He is planning on coming back after the winter.

Nach all dem Schnee rufen nun auch viele Leute an, um Heu zu kaufen. Und Border Collie-Dame Penny ist wieder zurueck in New Haven. Tav kann sie diesen Winter ueber nicht bei sich behalten. Gauge freut sich, insbesondere da Sip ja mit Lance gehen wird.

After all this snow people are calling about buying hay. And border collie lady Penny has returned to New Haven since Tav cannot keep her this winter. Gauge is happy especially since Sip is leaving with Lance.

In einer Woche kommen noch Antilopenjaeger, ab November Hirschjaeger, und kurz davor haben wir noch viel Rinderarbeit. Leider ohne Gaeste.

In about one week we'll have antelope hunters, from November on deer hunters and just before that we have a bunch of cattle work. Unfortunately without guests.

P.S. Wir haben auch ein neues Pferd, eine kleine kraeftige Stute namens Gypsy, die ein richtiger Gluecksfall zu sein scheint.

P.S. We got a new horse, a small powerful mare named Gypsy who seems to be a real catch.

Heute waren wir bei einem Branding, morgen muessen wir Rinder treiben, am Donnerstag geht es zum Rodeo, Freitag reiten wir nach Hulett, und am Sonntag findet eine Pferdeauktion statt. Langeweile kommt nicht auf. Anbei ein paar neue Bilder (vielen Dank an die Fotografen).

Today we were at a branding, tomorrow we need to move cattle, on Thursday we'll go to a rodeo, Friday we'll ride to Hulett and on Sunday there will be a horse sale. No time to be bored. Attached a few new pics (thanks to the photographers).

Wir haben einem Nachbarn geholfen, Rinder zu treiben. Er, Nick, Hap und ich sind nicht auf dem Bild. Wir hatten die ganze Woche viel zu tun. Heute Abend gehts in die Ponderosa Bar. Nachtraeglich Lisas 21. Geburtstag feiern!

We helped a neighbor move cattle. He, Nick, Hap and I are not on the picture. We were busy all week. Tonight we are going to the Ponderosa Ranch. Celebrating Lisa's 21st birthday one week too late!

Kuel bleiben / Staying cool

Unsere Pferde am Morgen / Our horses in the morning

Ich habe ganz viele neue Fotos, werde aber erst im Laufe des Tages dazu kommen, sie zu sortieren und zu bearbeiten. Manchmal hole ich morgens die Pferde rein ... ein schoener Anblick, wie man oben sieht.

I have a bunch of new photos but won't be able to sort and edit them till later. Sometimes I get the horses in in the morning ... a beautiful view as you can see above.

Unser neuer Wrangler, Hap, hat seine Arbeit begonnen. Am Mittwoch kamen - wie angekuendigt - Melanie, Carsten und Gordana an. Kat ist krank geworden und konnte doch nicht fliegen. Seit Samstag sind auch Astrid, Harald und Tochter Bianca hier sowie Sanny, alle aus Deutschland. Dafuer mussten wir uns von Sonja, Cristin, Kathy und Pia trennen, die aber angedroht haben, wiederzukommen ;-) Marie geniesst drei Wochen auf der Ranch.

Our new wrangler, Hap, started work. On Wednesday Melanie, Carsten and Gordana arrived - as mentioned. Kat got sick and could not fly back. And on Saturday Astrid, Harald and their daughter  Bianca as well as Sanny came in - all from Germany. We had to say bye to Sonja, Cristin, Kathy and Pia who threatened to come back next year ;-) Marie is enjoying three weeks on the ranch.

Die Temperaturen sind etwas gesunken. Ich fuehle mich wieder mehr als Mensch ... und habe mit Bruno auch an einigen Cattle Drives bei Nachbarn teilgenommen. Die Anderen halten mich fuer verrueckt, aber ich freue mich auf den Herbst. Wenn ich immer Hitze wollte, koennte ich auch in die Tropen ziehen ...

The temps have fallen a bit. I feel more like a a human again ... and together with Bruno have participated in a few cattle drives at the neighbors'. The others think I am crazy but I am looking forward to fall. If I wanted heat all the time, I would have moved to the tropics ...

Ein Tag im Wilden Westen / A day in the Wild West

Morgendliche Fuetterung, damit die Pferde tagsueber auch hart arbeiten koennen. Nick und Anthony fuhren am Dienstag mit Melanie, Maike und Gilbert nach Sued-Dakota, um Brandon dort zu helfen, ausgerissene Rinder wieder zusammenzutreiben. Auf dem zweiten Foto seht Ihr Melanie auf Pep. Peter, Alex und Martin blieben auf der Ranch. Alex und Martin fuhren mit dem Mule an den See zum Fischen, Emmett im Schlepptau. Peter nahm sich Nicks Gelaendemaschine. Ueber die Forellen habe ich ja bereits berichtet. Nachmittags brachen wir dann zu einem gemuetlichen Trailritt auf.

Morning feeding so the horses can work hard during the day. On Tuesday, Nick and Anthony took Melanie, Maike and Gilbert over to South Dakota to help Brandon gather cattle which had escaped. On the second photo you see Melanie on Pep. Peter, Alex and Martin stayed on the ranch. Alex and Martin took Emmett in the mule down to the lake to fish. Peter drove Nick's dirt bike. I already wrote about the trout. In the afternoon we went on a leisurely trail ride.

Mittwoch hiess es leider Abschied nehmen :-( Maike und Gilbert, die bis Samstag bleiben, halfen zusammen mit Anthony unserem Nachbarn Lee bei der Rinderarbeit ... Mutterkuehe und Kaelber sortieren, Jaehrlinge impfen, Bullen treiben etc. Fotos folgen. Ich bin heute intelligenterweise mit dem Auto ueber meine Kamera gefahren *#^&**%$(&>?)#@*

Wednesday we had to say bye :-( Together with Anthony, Maike and Gilbert who are staying till Saturday helped our neighbor Lee with the cattle work ... sorting mother cows and calves, vaccinate yearlings, move bulls etc. Photos will follow. I managed to drive the car over my camera today *#^&**%$(&>?)#@*

Canyonreiter / Canyon riders

Ich war zwar nicht dabei (Kochen!), aber auch am Sonntag war das Programm wieder voll. Morgens zog das Team (s. Foto) aus, um unsere Rinder zu treiben ... in einer der schwierigsten Koppeln auf der Ranch. Tiefe Canyons und viele Baeume und Buesche.

I did not participate (cooking!) but we had a full program again. In the morning the team (s. photo) left to move our cattle ... in one of the most difficult pastures on the ranch. Deep canyons and lots of trees and bushes.

Danach ging es in den Whirlpool, dann zum Schiesstraining und Ropen (s. Gilbert auf Patch). Aber keine Sorge, alles ist freiwillig. Ihr koennt hier auch einfach nur ausspannen. So wie die Pferde (ganz unten). Was die Gaense daran so interessant finden, weiss ich nicht.

Afterwards hot tub, then shooting practice and roping (s. Gilbert on Patch). But don't worry, everything is voluntary. You can also just relax out here. Like the horses (s. photo below). Why the geese find this so interesting, I don't know.

Dem Rindvieh auf der Spur / Tracking cattle

Gestern war es soweit: Nach Kirsten, Claudia, Florian und Dale mussten nun auch Donal und Ruth abreisen. Ruth stand noch einmal besonders frueh auf, um mit Anthony zu Pferde die Herde hereinzutreiben ... und die kleinen Ziegenbabies zu fuettern. Dann habe ich die Beiden nach Rapid City gefahren. Abgeholt habe ich: Maike und Gilbert aus Deutschland (Wiederholungstaeter vom vergangenen Jahr), Alexandra und Martin aus der Schweiz (Gruss an Dajanah und Felix!) und Peter und seine Tochter Melanie (Gruss an Andy und Lisa!) aus Deutschland.

Yesterday was the day: After Kirsten, Claudia, Florian and Dale also Donal and Ruth had to go home again. Ruth got up very early one more time to jingle in the horses (on horseback) together with Anthony. And to feed the goat babies. Afterwards I drove Donal and Ruth to Rapid City. And I picked up new guests: Maike and Gilbert from Germany (repeaters from last year), Alexandra and Martin from Switzerland (Greetings to Dajanah and Felix!) and Peter and his daughter Melanie from Germany (Greetings to Andy and Lisa!).

Heute ging es dann gleich los mit einem langen Viehtrieb in schwierigem Gelaende ... Peter und Martin, die zu Hause erst ein paar Reitstunden genommen hatten, haben sich bravuroes geschlagen. Wir waren mit den Nachbarn unterwegs: Travis, Annie, Philip, Tiffany und Tim. Anbei ein paar Fotos (oben Nick und Travis bei der Lagebesprechung, ganz unten Anthony und Nikki). Habe nicht so viele wie sonst, weil ich Patch geritten bin, der gern auf der Stelle galoppiert ;-)

Today we started with a long cattle drive in very difficult terrain ... Peter and Martin who had only taken a few riding lessons at home became real cowboys. We joined our neighbors on the drive: Travis, Annie, Philip, Tiffany and Tim. Attached a few photos (above Nick and Travis talking business, below Anthony and Nikki). Could not take as many pics as usual because I was riding Patch who likes to canter in one spot ;-)

Neben den Gaesten waren auch Nick, Brandy, Nikki, Andy und natuerlich Anthony dabei. Nach dem schnellen Ritt hatten alle ein seeliges Grinsen im Gesicht. Ich auch ...

Other than the guests, Nick, Brandy, Nikki, Andy and - of course - Anthony were riding as well. After the fast ride everyone had a big grin on their faces. Me too ...
