Mit Captain im Trailer durch die Badlands / With Captain in the trailer through the Badlands

Vor ein paar Tagen haben wir noch bei fast 30 Grad geschwitzt, heute schneit es den ganzen Tag. Das Leben in Wyoming ist wie immer voller Dramen, kleine wie grosse.

A few days ago we were sweating at over 80 degrees, today it has been snowing without end. Life in Wyoming is full of drama, small as well as big ones.

2009 wollte ich unbedingt einen Schimmel in der Herde haben (von einem Buckskin abgesehen, den ich immer noch nicht habe). Da kam Tucker ... und schneller als ich denken konnte Pink, Smoky, Scotch und Frost. Tja, seit Donnerstag haben wir einen sechsten Schimmel: Captain. Sobald das Wetter wieder schoener ist, schiesse ich Fotos. Der bildhuebsche kraeftige Wallach kommt aus den Badlands Sued-Dakotas (s.o.).

2009 I desperately wanted a grey in the herd (not to mention a buckskin which I still don't have). Then Tucker came along ... and faster than I could think Pink, Smoky, Scotch and Frost. Well, and since Thursday we have a sixth grey: Captain. As soon as the weather gets nice again, I will take some photos. The handsome strong gelding comes from South Dakota's Badlands (s. above).

Einige meiner Gaense sitzen seit Wochen auf Eiern. Jetzt schluepfte der erste Satz Kueken (s.u. mit Mama, Papa und Tante ... oder so aehnlich). Als ich am verlassenen Nest vorbeiging, hoerte ich ein Fiepen ... ein kleiner Schnabel stak aus einem Ei. Da hatten Mama und Geschwister wohl jemanden vergessen ... als auch nach Stunden kein Familienmitglied auftauchte, half ich dem Kueken aus der Eierschale. Es war schon schwach und ausgekuehlt, aber dank einer Waermelampe und Ersatzmutter Ritas Pflege ist Humphry mittlerweile gesund und fidel. Nur seine Familie will immer noch nichts von ihm wissen, so dass wir ihn wohl weiter per Hand aufziehen werden (Foto folgt im naechsten Blog).

Some of my geese have been sitting on eggs for the last few weeks. Now the first set of goslings (s. below with mum, dad and auntie ... or so) has hatched. When I walked by the empty nest, I heard a cheep ... a small beak showed through the shell of an egg. Mum and siblings had apparently left someone behind ... when they did not show up all day, I helped the little gosling out of its shell. It was already weak and cold but thanks to a heat lamp and foster mum Rita's care, Humphry is now healthy and agile. Only his family still does not want to deal with him, so we probably have to go on raising him by hand (photo in the next blog).

Wie es unseren anderen Sorgenkindern geht: Kalb Ruby wird zwar nie eine imposante Kuh werden, aber es geht ihr gut. Buster (s.u.) ist frustriert, muss aber leider weiter in einem kleinen Stall bleiben, damit sein Bruch heilen kann. Und Scotch (s.u.) bleibt erstmal, obwohl wir noch nicht ganz sicher sind, ob sein Bein weiterhin gesund bleiben wird. Schecke Patch haben wir als Weidegefaehrten mit Kadoka zu Brandy und Brandon geschickt. Patch wird langsam alt und kommt nicht mehr so gut die Berge hoch.

How are our other patients doing? Calf Ruby will never be an imposing cow but she is doing fine. Buster (s. below) is frustrated but will unfortunately have to spend more time in his stall so his pelvis can heal. And Scotch (s. below) will stay even though we aren't exactly sure if his leg will hold up to riding. We sent Paint Patch as a pasture buddy with Kadoka to Brandy and Brandon. Patch is growing old and cannot climb hills that well anymore.

Vor ein paar Tagen muss nachts ein Loewe durch die Herde gelaufen sein. Die Jaeger haben Spuren gesehen. Der Zaun war an mehreren Stellen kaputt, wo die Tiere ausgebrochen sind. Verletzt hatte sich dabei hauptsaechlich Tinkerbelle, deren Wunden aber gut heilen. Schlimmer ist es Bueffel Daisy ergangen. Obwohl man nichts sah, war Blut in ihrem Urin, und sie wurde von Tag zu Tag lethargischer. Heute morgen haben wir sie tot auf der Weide gefunden. Sie muss innere Verletzungen erlitten haben. Wir haben Daisy 2003 als Kalb bekommen, sie ist leider nicht sehr alt geworden.

A few days ago a lion must have run through the herd. The hunters found tracks. The fence was down in several spots where the animals had fled. Only Tinkerbelle was injured but her wounds are healing well. Buffalo Daisy did not do so well. Even though one could not see anything, there was blood in her urine. She became more and more lethargic. This morning we found her dead on the pasture. She must have had internal injuries. We got Daisy as a calf in 2003, unfortunately she did not become very old.

Und dann fielen bei einem abendlichen Sturm die letzten Waende des New Haven General Stores zusammen (s.u.) ... Nick hatte vor knapp zehn Jahren das Fundament wieder aufgebaut und das Gebaeude entkernt, aber dann fehlten immer Zeit und/oder Geld, um das Projekt zu beenden.

And then the last remaining walls of the New Haven Store fell down in an evening storm (s. below) ... Nick had built a new foundation and had cleaned up the building almost 10 years ago but after that there has never been enough time and/or money to finish the project.

Am Wochenende sichteten unsere Truthahnjaeger Bullen auf der Ranch. Der Nachbar vermisste seine. Da aber besagter Nachbar gerade von einer wuetenden Mutterkuh krankenhausreif getrampelt worden war, machten wir uns auf die Suche (siehe oben). Ich ritt Stella, die mich beinahe abgesetzt haette, aber manchmal braucht der Mensch eben auch etwas Glueck. Das Loch im Zaun haben wir gefunden und repariert, aber die Bullen entkamen ... und wurden spaeter wieder von den Jaegern gesichtet.

Last weekend our turkey hunters saw bulls on our ranch. The neighbor missed his. But since this neighbor had just been trampled into the ground by a mad mother cow, we went out to look for his bulls (see above). I rode Stella who almost managed to get rid of me but once in a while I get lucky, too. We found the hole in the fence and repaired it but the bulls got away ... and were later seen by our hunters again.

Sie haben sich im Sommer 2009 in New Haven kennengelernt und treffen sich jedes Jahr mindestens einmal in Deutschland, Nordlichter Lena und Christine und Suedlichter (man koennte auch Norditaliener sagen) Stefan, Dagmar und Sandra. Foto siehe unten.

They met in New Haven in the summer of 2009 and have been visiting each other at least once a year since then: northern lights Lena and Christine and southern lights (one could say North Italians) Stefan, Dagmar and Sandra. See photo below.

Kat ist abgereist: ueber Deutschland nach Westafrika auf die Oelplattform, auf der sie arbeitet. Ende Mai kommt sie wieder. Sie hat natuerlich wieder viele Fotos gemacht, die ich Euch Ende der Woche zeige. Ihr duerft Euch auf Enthuellungen von Tav und Nick freuen ;-)

Kat has left: via Germany to West Africa onto the oil rig where she is working. She is coming back at the end of May. As usual she took many photos which I'll show to you at the end of the week. You may look forward to revelations from Tav and Nick ;-)

Gestern waren Rita (auf Jet) und ich (auf Tinkerbelle) reiten. Heute waren wir alle auf dem Platz, u.a. um Rinder zu arbeiten. Stella war wie immer etwas aufsaessig, aber langweilig wird es nie mit ihr. Alles Weitere auf den Bildern. Ach ja, Nick hatte gestern Geburtstag (den 55.), Brandy, Brandon, Emmett und Garrett sind zurueck, und unser Schlafzimmer ist endlich isoliert. Ansonsten: viele Truthaehne und Truthahnjaeger.

Yesterday Rita (on Jet) and I (on Tinkerbelle) went riding. Today we all worked in the arena, also with cattle. Stella was a bit oppositional as usual but at least she's never boring. Look at the pics. And yes, yesterday was Nick's birthday (the 55 th). Brandy, Brandon, Emmett and Garrett came back and our bed room is finally insulated. Other than that: many turkeys and turkey hunters.

Glueckliches Kalb I / Happy calf I

Wir haben momentan richtig viel zun tun. Die Truthahnjagdsaison beginnt am Samstag. Melde mich in ein paar Tagen ausfuehrlicher. Auf dem Weg zurueck vom Flughafen haben Rita (ja, sie ist angekommen) und ich viele neue Kaelber und balzende Truthaehne gesehen. Die Hennen hielten sich bedeckt ... da muessen die Herren sich schon wirklich bemuehen :-)

We are really busy right now. Turkey hunting season is beginning on Saturday. Will write a bit more in a few days. On the way from the airport, Rita (yes, she arrived) and I saw bunches of new calves and strutting gobblers. The hens pretended to not care ... the guys will have to work hard for their attention :-)

Und dann kommt es doch anders: Buster hat kein Patella-Band-Problem, sondern er hat sein Becken gebrochen (wahrscheinlich gefallen) ... sechs Monate Einzelhaft und natuerlich kein Reiten - aber dann soll alles wieder gut sein. Dafuer erklaert sich aber Leos holpriger Galopp mit Tendenz zum Kreuzgalopp durch besagte Patella-Sehne.

And again things aren't as expected: Buster does not have patella ligament problem but instead he broke his pelvis (he probably fell) ... six months of confinement and no riding, of course - but after that he should be okay again. Interestingly enough Leo's rough canter and occasional cross-firing is caused by above mentioned patella ligament.

Kat, die fuer drei Wochen aus Deutschland angereist ist, kuemmert sich um die Invaliden. Morgens Buster fuettern und Stall ausmisten, dann eine halbe Stunde lang Leo den Berg hoch und runter traben, um die Muskulatur aufzubauen. Und dann Scotch reiten, um zu sehen, ob er gesund bleibt. Er wurde vor etwa einem Jahr von einem anderen Pferd am Vorderbein geschlagen und war den ganzen Sommer ueber lahm. Nach sechs Monaten Winterpause hoffen wir, dass er endlich wieder reitbar ist.

Kat, who came here from Germany for three weeks, takes care of the invalids. In the morning she feeds Buster and mugs his stall. Then she trots Leo up- and downhill to strengthen his muscles. And then she rides Scotch to see if he stays sound. About a year ago he was kicked by another horse on the front leg and was lame all summer. Now after six months of winter break we hope, that he'll be ridable again.

Gestern - noch kurz vor unserem Kinobesuch - haben wir Bruno "aufgegabelt": einen 5-jaehrigen Wallach, der zwar noch nicht so viel Erfahrung, dafuer aber einen vernuenftigen Kopf hat. Wie Ihr wisst, kann man nie genug Pferde haben. Uberigens: Wir haben "The Hunger Games" gesehen, Nick fand den Film ein bisschen deprimierend, aber Kat und ich waren begeistert.

Yesterday - just before going to the movies - we "picked up" Bruno: a 5 year old gelding who does not have much experience, yet but does have a sound mind. As you know, you can never have enough horses. By the way: We watched "The Hunger Games", Nick found it depressing but Kat and I liked it.

Tav baut an der Teacher's Cabin in unserer Geisterstadt oder verbringt Zeit beim Zaeune flicken - seine absolute Lieblingstaetigkeit ;-) Nick ist fast mit unserem Schlafzimmer fertig, aber heute haben er und Kat in der Lodge die Tische geschliffen ... naechstes Wochenende kommen die ersten Jagdgaeste.

Tav is building on the Teacher's Cabin in our ghost town and spends quite some time fencing - his favorite activity ;-) Nick is almost done with our bed room but today he and Kat sanded the tables in our lodge ... next weekend the first hunting guests will arrive.

Ueberall hoert man wieder die wilden Truthaehne "gobbeln", waehrend sie um Hennen buhlen. Und auf den Weiden springen die ersten Kaelber herum. Fruehling in Wyoming!

Die wilde Daisy / Wild Daisy

Showdown: Gauge, Penny und/and Daisy

Penny nimmt ihren Job als Huetehund ernst (Gauge nicht, aber er macht trotzdem gern mit, wenn's gerade nichts zu Fressen gibt). Die Rinder sind normalerweise sehr beeindruckt von Penny, nicht so Daisy: Beim Anblick von Hunden wird sie zum wilden Bueffel.

Penny takes her job as a herding dog serious (Gauge does not but he likes to join her whenever there is nothing to eat). The cattle are pretty impressed by Penny, not so Daisy: When she sees dogs, she turns into a wild buffalo.

Man lernt immer dazu: Letztens kam Buster (einer der schwarz-weissen Paints) zum Korral, stocklahm, er zog das eine Hinterbein hinter sich her. Wir nahmen zunaechst an, dass er sich gepruegelt hat, obwohl Buster eigentlich zu bequem fuer so etwas ist. Aber zum Glueck fragten wir auch einen Tierarzt: Buster Kniescheibe ist verhakt. Pferde koennen ihre Kniescheibe einhaken, damit sie im Stehen schlafen koennen, aber hin und wieder klappt es nicht mehr mit dem Aushaken. Am Dienstag wird er operiert, ich werde berichten. In drei Wochen soll er wieder reitbar sein ... wenn keine Komplikationen auftreten. Drueckt Buster die Daumen!

One never stops learning: Recently, Buster (one of the black Paints) came up to the corral, lame, he was dragging his hind leg. We first assumed that he got into a fight even though he is usually to lazy for that. Luckily we also asked a vet: Buster's stifle is locked. Horses can lock their knee caps so they can sleep while standing. But once in a while the knee cap does not unlock anymore. On Tuesday Buster will be operated on, I will keep you posted. He should be ridable in three weeks again ... if everything goes well. Keep you fingers crossed for Buster!

Wyoming hat nun ein Gesetz vorgelegt, das aber noch von der US-Regierung bestaetigt werden muss. Danach duerfen in der Gegend um Yellowstone eine bestimmte Anzahl von Woelfen zu einer bestimmten Jahreszeit geschossen werden. Im Rest Wyomings ist der Wolf Freiwild. Gut oder nicht? Coyoten sind auch Freiwild, und noch gibt es viele. Wir werden sehen.

Wyoming has now proposed a law which still has to be ratified by the federal government. According to this law a limited number of wolves can be shot during a specific hunting season in the area around Yellowstone. In the rest of Wyoming, wolves are considered predators and can be shot at any time. Good or not? Coyotes are predators as well and are shot but there are still a lot around. We will see.

Tav hat begonnen, seine Blue-Roan-Stute zu reiten (Foto siehe unten). Sie ist noch nicht sehr erfahren, wirkt aber ziemlich ruhig und besonnen. Falls Ihr zu Tav Kontakt habt (Facebook), schlagt ihm doch bitte mal Namen vor, das arme Pferd hat immer noch keinen.

Tav has started to ride his blue roan mare (photo below). She is still inexperienced but seems to be calm and easy-going. If you have contact with Tav on Facebook, please suggest some names because the poor horse still does not have one.

Seit Nick und ich Anfang Maerz aus Europa zurueckgekommen sind, hat es nicht geregnet. Es lag zwar anfangs noch Schnee, aber der ist jetzt vollkommen verschwunden. Es ist warm, trocken und windig. Hoechste Feuergefahr! 

Since Nick and I returned from Europe in early March, it has not rained. There was still some snow on the ground in the beginning but it's all gone now. It's warm, dry and windy. Highest fire alert!

Tav und seine namenlose Stute / Tav and his nameless mare

Heute morgen wollte Nick ein paar Maisfuetterer auf der Ranch (fuer Wild) checken. Da wir nur wenig Zeit hatten, bevor Heukaeufer kommen wollten, wusste ich, dass es ein schneller Ritt sein wuerde. Da mir Stella und Sunny dafuer noch etwas zu frisch waren und ich unsere Nummer-Sicher-Pferde (langsam) nicht bemuehen wollte, holte ich Frost raus, der am Boden wieder den Mustang gab, beim Reiten aber relativ brav war.

This morning Nick wanted to check a few corn feeders on the ranch (for game). Since we did not have much time because some hay buyers wanted to come out, I knew we were in for a fast ride. Stella and Sunny were still too fresh for that and I did not want to bother with our so called bombproof horses (slow). So I chose Frost who pretended to be a mustang again on the ground but was okay during riding.

Nick mag Leo, seinen neuen Wallach. Nach unserem Ritt ueber Berg und Tal bei ziemlich warmen Wetter waren beide Pferde ganz schoen geschafft. Es war ein ausgiebiges Sandbad angesagt.

Nick likes Leo, his new gelding. After our ride up and down the canyons in pretty warm weather both horses were pretty tired. They needed a long sand bath.

Vor kurzem haben wir die Kolonie unserer Amishen Nachbarn besucht, die vor einiger Zeit in diese Gegend gezogen sind. Sie waren gerade dabei, ihre Felder mit Pferden zu pfluegen. Dummerweise hatte ich meine Kamera vergessen. Die Amish bieten Zaumzeug in guter Qualitaet zu guenstigen Preisen an. Unser Ansprechpartner, Henry, meinte, dass wir im Sommer auch gern mit unseren Gaesten vorbeikommen koennen.

A few days ago we visited the colony of our Amish neighbors who moved into the area a while ago. They were just disking their fields with teams of horses ... and I of course had forgotten to bring my camera. The Amish offer good quality tack for very reasonable prices. Our contact, Henry, said that were welcome to bring our guests along in summer.

Tav reitet mittlerweile seine neue noch immer namenlose Stute (aber leider nicht, wenn ich mit Kamera vorbeikomme), die sich trotz Mangel an Erfahrung sehr entspannt gibt. Nachdem Nick und er das Heu geladen hatten (s.u.), haben sie sich wieder an Nicks und mein Schlafzimmer gemacht (Fotos werden folgen).

Tav is riding his new (still nameless) mare (just not when I come by with the camera). She seems to be pretty relaxed despite her lack of experience. After Nick and Tav loaded the hay (s. below), they started work on Nick's and my bed room again (photos will follow).
