Einmal Fruehling und zurueck / To spring and back

Lang lang ist's her ... seit dem letzten Blogeintrag. Nick und ich waren zwei Wochen auf Urlaub (eine Woche in Deutschland bei meinen Eltern und eine Woche auf Rundtour in Irland) - bei schoenstem Fruehlingswetter. Eigentlich wollte ich fleissig sein, habe dann aber alle Viere gerade sein lassen und nur Emails und Telefonnachrichten beantwortet ;-)

It's been a while ... since I last wrote a blog. Nick and I spent two weeks on vacation (one week with my parents in Germany and one week on a tour through Ireland) - in the nicest spring weather. I wanted to work quite a bit but then changed my mind and only answered emails and phone messages ;-)

Kurz vor unserem Urlaub kam nachts mitten in einem Schneesturm ein Kalb zur Welt (Fotos siehe unten), das sich aber zum Glueck schnell von der Kaelte erholte. Phillip, der diesen Winter mit seiner Familie auf der Ranch wohnt, hat sich gut um Haus, Hof und Tiere gekuemmert. Nur die Katzen haben sich beschwert, dass sie nicht genuegend gestreichelt und unterhalten worden sind. Aber zum Glueck kommt Rita ja Ende Maerz wieder nach New Haven, um diese wichtige Aufgabe zu uebernehmen ;-)

Just before our vacation a calf was born at night in the middle of a snow storm (photos below). Luckily it recovered quickly. Phillip who is living with his family on the ranch this winter took good care of buildings and critters. Just the cats complained that they had not been petted and entertained enough. Good that Rita is coming back to New Haven at the end of March to take over this very important chore ;-)

Um kurz auf den letzten Blogeintrag zurueckzukommen: Obwohl wir eine neue Cabin haben, werden wir nicht mehr Gaeste aufnehmen. Aber wir hatten manchmal Probleme, ueberhaupt acht Gaeste in unseren fuenf Zimmern unterzubringen, wenn wir viele Einzelreisende gebucht hatten.

To add something to my last blog: Even though we will have a new cabin, we are not going to take more riding guests. It's just that often we could not even book eight guests for our five rooms because we had so many single travelers.

Nick hat mir versprochen, demnaechste mit Panelen einen Roundpen in unserer Heuscheune aufzubauen, damit ich mit Pferden arbeiten kann, ohne staendig im Schnee oder auf Eis zu stehen. Die Heuscheune ist fast leer, wir haben dieses Jahr fast alles Heu verkauft. Fuer unsere Pferde ist natuerlich noch genuegend vorhanden.

Nick promised to build me a round pen in the hay barn with panels so I can work with horses again without sinking into the snow or sliding on ice. The hay barn is almost empty. We sold most of our hay this year. There is enough left for our horses, of course.

Was die naechste Saison angeht: Wir haben noch ganz vereinzelt Platz im Juni, in den letzten beiden Juliwochen und ab Ende September bis Mitte Oktober.

Concerning the coming season: We only have very few spots left in June, in the last two weeks of July and in the end of September till the middle of October.

Auf unserer Reise nach Europa haben Nick und ich es auf neun Fluege gebracht: Rapid City nach Minneapolis, Minneapolis nach Amsterdam, Amsterdam nach Hamburg, dann Hamburg nach Amsterdam, Amsterdam nach Dublin, dann - gerade noch rechtzeitig vor dem Chaos des St. Patrick-Tags - Dublin nach Amsterdam, Amsterdam nach Minneapolis und Minneapolis ... nach Sioux Falls ... der Pilot meldete sich ploetzlich und meinte, wir muessten mal eben zwischenlanden und auftanken, weil das Wetter in Rapid City so schlecht sei, dass er nicht genuegend Benzin dabei haette. Na toll, ich war begeistert. Zum Glueck haben wir es dann auch noch von Sioux Falls nach Rapid City geschafft. Und haben die Nacht in der Stadt verbracht.

On our trip to Europe Nick and I had to start and land nine times: Rapid City to Minneapolis, Minneapolis to Amsterdam, Amsterdam to Hamburg, then Hamburg to Amsterdam, Amsterdam to Dublin, then - right before the madness of St. Patrick's Day - Dublin to Amsterdam, Amsterdam to Minneapolis and Minneapolis ... to Sioux Falls ... the pilot suddenly said that we had to touch down quickly to gas up because the weather in Rapid City was so bad and he did not have enough gas for that. I was thrilled. Luckily we also made it from Sioux Falls to Rapid City. And spent the night in town.

Wir sind froh, wieder in Wyoming zu sein, auch wenn der Urlaub schoen war. Jetzt bleiben wir erstmal hier und warten auf all unsere neuen und alten Gaeste ;-)

We are happy to be back in Wyoming even though the vacation was really nice. Now we are going to stay put and wait for all of our new and old guests ;-)

Sommertage / Summer days

Eigentlich sollten hier ganz andere Fotos zu sehen sein ... ich habe Mittwoch, Donnerstag und Freitag mehr oder weniger im Buero verbracht, was aufgrund der Hitze nicht ganz sooo schlimm war, waehrend unsere Gaeste Abenteuer erlebt haben. Doch momentan bekomme ich die Fotos nicht von den anderen Kameras auf mein Laptop ... hoffentlich klappt es bis morgen. Dann folgen auch Details.

Actually you were supposed to see other photos here ... I worked most of Wedndesday, Thursday and Friday in the office - which was not tooo bad in this heat - while our guests survived adventures. But right now I have problems getting their pics onto my laptop ... hopefully I have figured it out by tomorrow. Then you'll get the details as well.

Gestern bin ich mit allen zum Sightseeing und Shoppen gefahren. Mittags waren wir bei Sandford's in Spearfish (s. Foto oben, v.l.n.r.: Sabine, Hannes, Silke, Andy, Claudia, Heini, Gisela), dann im Spearfish Canyon auf den Spuren Kevin Costners (s. zweites Foto, drauf klicken zum Vergroessern), und abends ging es nach Deadwood ... und da liess ich meine Kamera dummerweise im Auto und habe die interessantesten Motive verpasst ... doch dazu spaeter.

Yesterday I took everyone sightseeing and shopping. For lunch we went to Sandfords in Spearfish (s. photo, from left to right: Sabine, Hannes, Silke, Andy, Claudia, Heini, Gisela), then drove through Spearfish Canyon on Kevin Costner's tracks (s. second photo, click to enlarge) and on to Deadwood ... where I left my camera in the car and missed the most interesting motives ... more about that later.

Klaus musste aufgrund einer Rueckenverletzung fruehzeitig abreisen. Wir hoffen, dass er gut zu Hause angekommen ist. Anthony, Sabine, Gisela, Claudia, Hannes und Heini treiben heute zweihundert Kuehe und ihre Kaelber von einer Koppel in die naechste. Hoert sich einfach an, aber ... die Koppel, in der die Rinder zusammengetrieben werden muessen, ist ca. 500 Hektar gross, was sich Europaeer meist gar nicht vorstellen koennen, und das Gelaende ist rauh und unwegsam ... hoffentlich faellt uns bei 40 Grad keiner vom Pferd ;-)

Klaus had to leave early because of a back injury. We hope he arrived home safely. Today Anthony, Sabine, Gisela, Claudia, Hannes and Heini are moving 200 cows and their calves from one pasture into another. Sounds easy but ... the pasture they have to gather is more than a 1000 acres big, something Europeans (and many Americans) cannot imagine. And the terrain is rough and rugged ... hopefully no one will fall off the horse at 100 degrees F ;-)

Nick baut gerade Tore fuer seine neue Heuscheune, und Silke, deren Knie weh tut, hilft ihm dabei, waehrend ich Buchhaltung mache. Unten ein Bild von der leeren Scheune und eines von der halb vollen Scheune. Mittlerweile passt kein Ballen mehr hinein, und dabei haben wir dieses Jahr gar nicht so viel Heu.

Sommer auf dem Lande / Summer in the country

Dies ist mein mobiler Sprayer ... der Tank ist schwerer als der ATV, man muss an den Haengen hoellisch aufpassen, sonst zieht der Tank einen hinunter, da muessen die Bremsen passen.

This is my mobile sprayer ... the tank is heavier than the ATV, one has to be very careful on hills, otherwise the tank pulls down the vehicle, the brakes are not strong enough.

Die Scheune macht sich auch, huebsch ist sie nicht, aber praktisch, relativ schnell zu bauen (alles in Eigenregie) und nicht zu teuer (vom Zement mal abgesehen). Wir ueberlegen, das Dach zu streichen. Morgen gibt's auch Fotos von Andy und Lisa, aber heute habe ich sie nur kurz gesehen.

The barn is progressing, it's not exactly beautiful but practical, relatively fast to build (all done without outside help) and not too expensive (well, if you don't count the cement). We are considering painting the roof. Tomorrow there will be photos of Andy and Lisa but I have hardly seen them today.

Zurueck auf der Ranch / Back on the ranch

Zurueck auf der Ranch ... Brandy und ich haben so viel gelernt und freuen uns schon, das neue bzw. vertiefte Wissen anzuwenden. Zum Glueck haben wir 30 Pferde und nicht nur eines, da kann man viel ausprobieren. Am letzten Tag haben wir viel Rinderarbeit gemacht, "working cow horse" und "cutting" (s. Foto unten). Und den Abend zu vor haben Dave Ellis, seine Frau Jody und Brandy gesungen. Dave ist dazu ein exzellenter Gitarrenspieler (Foto unten).

Back on the ranch ... Brandy and I learnt a lot and are looking forward to use our new and deeper knowledge of horsemanship. Luckily we have 30 horses and not just one, so we can try out a lot. On the last day of our clinic we did a lot of cattle work, "working cow horse" and "cutting" (s. photo below). And on the evening before, Dave Ellis, his wife Jody and Brandy sang. Dave is an excellent guitar player (photo below).

Waehrend Brandy und ich auf Seminar waren, sind Lena (auf Jet), Sandra (auf Rena) und Christine (auf Tramp) angekommen. Habe sie heute endlich getroffen und fotografiert (oben). Sie haben schon einige Viehtriebe hinter sich ... Dagmar und Stefan sind mittlerweile Profis ... Stefan plant schon den Kauf eines eigenen Pferdes.

While Brandy and I were gone, Lena (on Jet), Sandra (on Rena) and Christine (on Tramp) arrived. Finally met them and took a photo (above). They have already moved some herds ... Dagmar and Stefan are already professionals ... Stefan is considering to buy his first own horse.

Und natuerlich nimmt die Heuscheune Formen an (Fotos siehe unten). Gary, Thomas, Nick und Jo fangen immer frueh an, um bei der grossen Hitze frueher Schluss machen zu koennen. Eigentlich sollte ich heute mit dem Heuen anfangen, aber es hat gestern Nacht geregnet.

And of course, the hay barn is taking shape (photos below). Gary, Thomas, Nick and Jo start work early in the day so they can stop work when the heat becomes too much. I was supposed to start haying today but it rained last night.

Auf gen Westen / Westwards

Freitag morgen kamen die vier Zementtrucks fuer die neue Heuscheune - leider alle direkt hintereinander. Bei der Hitze kamen Nick, Gary, Thomas, Anthony, Jo und Brandy kaum hinterher, die Masse zu bearbeiten, bevor sie fest wurde. Ich hatte Glueck und durfte mit unseren Gaesten reiten, und Andy hatte zu putzen und zu kochen. Dafuer haben dann alle den Nachmittag am See verbracht.

Friday morning four cement trucks arrived for the new hay barn - unfortunately all of them at the same time. In the heat Nick, Gary, Thomas, Anthony, Jo and Brandy could barely follow with the trowel work before the cement hardened. I was lucky and was allowed to go ride with the guests. And Andy had to clean and cook. But in the afternoon everyone took off and spend time at the lake.

Am Samstag sind Brandy und ich mit unseren Pferden Viento (frueher Blue) und Jazz nach Sheridan gefahren, um an einem viertaegigen Parelli-Seminar mit 5-Star Instructor Dave Ellis teilzunehmen. Auf dem Foto unten seht Ihr Brandy auf Viento und eine andere Kursteilnehmerin auf dem Weg zur offenen Arena ... die Ranch, auf der wir wohnen, befindet sich in den wunderschoenen Bighorn Mountains. Unsere Pferde und wir lernen in Riesenschritten ... mehr morgen.

On Saturday Brandy and I drove with our horses Viento (before Blue) and Jazz to Sheridan to participate in a four-day Parelli clinic with 5-star instructor Dave Ellis. On the photo you see Brandy on Viento and another class participant on the way to the open arena ... the ranch we are staying at is in the beautiful Bighorn Mountains. Our horses and we are learning so much ... more tomorrow.

Die Scheunenbauer / The barn builders

Thomas (aus Bayern) und Gary arbeiten seit Wochen am Fundament der neuen Heuscheune ... auf dem Foto sieht man die Details leider nicht so gut. Am Mittwoch wird Beton gegossen ... hoffentlich spielt das Wetter mit. Tagsueber ist es heiss (Gauge und ich bleiben im Schatten), aber abends gibt es oefter Gewitter.

Thomas (from Bavaria) and Gary have been working on the foundation of the new hay barn for weeks. Unfortunately you cannot see all the details on the photo. On Wednesday we'll pour cement ... hopefully the weather will co-operate. During the day it's hot (Gauge and I stay in the shade) but in the evening there are thunderstorms.

Barbara, Katha, Anthony, Jo und Andy sind mit den Pferden am See. Das Wasser ist jetzt warm genug zum Schwimmen. Tine, Dein Timing passte einfach nicht. Naechstes Jahr musst Du spaeter kommen.

Heuscheune, erster Teil / Hay barn, part one

Heute - knapp vor dem naechsten (angekuendigten) Blizzard - wurden die Teile fuer die Heuscheune angeliefert. Hier seht Ihr Nick im Traktor, Brandy und den Trucker beim Abladen. Die beiden Typen unten auf dem Bild (Gauge und Emmett) beobachten das Vorgehen kritisch. Und als es dann doch zu lange dauert, haelt Emmett ein Mittagsschlaefchen ... es hat etwas gedauert, bis wir ihn gefunden haben ... Foto siehe ganz unten.

Today - just before the next (forecast) blizzard - the parts for the hay barn were delivered. Here you see Nick in the tractor, Brandy and the trucker unloading the trailer. The two guys on the picture below (Gauge and Emmett) critically observe what's happening. And since it just went on and on, Emmett took a nap ... and it took a while for us to find him ... see photo at bottom.

Bauprojekte / Building projects

Manchmal gibt es Verwirrung hinsichtlich der Gebauede auf unserer Ranch und wer wo wohnt. Auf dem Foto seht Ihr das Trailerhaus, in dem im Sommer unsere Mitarbeiter gewohnt haben. Ich zeige es Euch nur, weil die, die es gesehen haben, es nicht wiedererkennen werden. Wir haben es voellig neu mit Holz verkleidet, vorne eine Terrasse und hinten eine geschlossene Porch angebaut (s. Foto unten). Anfang Dezember sind Brandy, Brandon und Emmett dort eingezogen.

Sometimes people are confused about the various buildings on our ranch and who lives where. On the photo you see the trailer house which housed our employees last summer. I am just showing it to you because those of you who saw it won't recognize it. We sided it with wood and added an open porch in the front and a closed one in the back (photo below). Brandy, Brandon and Emmett moved into it in the beginning of December.

Deshalb muessen wir bis zum Fruehling ein neues Haus fuer unsere Mitarbeiter herrichten. Wir sind gerade dabei, das so genannte Stucco Haus zu restaurieren (Fotos folgen). Zusammen mit der bereits restaurierten Grainery (einer ehemaligen Getreidescheune) fuer unsere Praeriehundjaeger, der noch nicht restaurierten Teacher Cabin und dem alten New Haven Store bildet es die Ghosttown (Geisterstadt) von New Haven (dazu ein anderes Mal mehr, Fotos auf der Homepage unter "Die Ranch"). Das Teacher Cabin wollen wir im kommenden Jahr ausbauen, so dass der Wrangler ein eigenes Haus hat und die Saisonkraefte das Stucco Haus nutzen koennen.

That's why we have to build a new house for our employees by next spring. We are working on the so called Stucco House (pics will follow). Together with the already rebuilt grainery for our prairie dog hunters, the Teacher Cabin (not rebuilt, yet) and the old New Haven Store it constitutes the ghosttown of New Haven (more about it some other time, photos on our homepage under "The Ranch"). We want to restore the Teacher Cabin next year, so the wrangler can have his own house and the seasonal help gets to keep the stucco house.

Nick und ich wohnen in einem kleinen weissen Holzhaus am Fusse des Huegels, dem so genannten Bunkhaus. Es wurde vor etwa 100 Jahren erbaut (sehr alt fuer Wyoming) und ist nur unzureichend isoliert. Momentan schlafen Nick und ich mit Muetzen, denn in unserem Schlafzimmer, das etwas abseits vom Haupthaus liegt, herrschen nachts kuschelige Minusgrade (man kann seinen eigenen Atem sehen).

Nick and I live in a small white wood house at the foot of the hill, the so called bunkhouse. It was built 100 years ago (quite old for Wyoming) and is barely insulated. Right now Nick and I sleep with caps because the temperature in our bedroom which sits a little off the main house stays under 32 degrees Fahrenheit at night (you can see your own breath).

JoAnn, Nicks Mutter, wohnt im schoensten Blockhaus der Ranch ... ein Privileg des Rentnerdaseins, wenn man sein Geld nicht mehr in die Ranch investieren muss. Und unsere Lodge oben auf dem Huegel (abgebildet auf der Homepage unter "Unterkunft und Verpflegung") ist allein unseren Gaesten vorbehalten. Darueber hinaus gibt es zahlreiche Nutzgebauede von der Sattelkammer ueber den Maschinenschuppen bis zum Huehnerstall, um nur einige zu nennen. Nick bessert gerade den Kornschober aus (Hagelschaden).

JoAnn, Nick's mother, lives in the nicest log home on the ranch ... a retired person's privilege when one does not have to invest one's money into the ranch again. And our lodge on the top of the hill (pics on homepage under "Lodging and meals") is solely for our guests. In addition to that there are a lot of utility buildings like the saddle shed, the equipment shed and the chicken pen, just to name a few. Nick's working on the corn barn right now (hail damage).

Laufende Projekte (neben dem Stucco Haus): Renovierung und Ausbau der Lodge, Isolierung des Bunkhouses, ein Ofen fuer das Trailerhaus (wir heizen hauptsaechlich mit Holz und nur in Notfaellen mit Propan) etc.

Running projects are (other than the stucco house): renovating the lodge and adding space to it, insulating the bunkhouse, a stove for the trailer house (wir heat mainly with wood and only in emergencies with propane) etc.

Im Sommer haben wir das Community Center auf der anderen Seite der Strasse ausgebessert (Dach und Fenster) und haben auch noch diese Tage einiges herzurichten, bevor dort am Samstag die Gemeindeweihnachtsfeier stattfinden wird.

In summer we improved on the Community Center on the other side of the road (roof and windows) and still have a few days of work left on the inside before the community's Christmas party on Saturday.

Nicks neue Heuscheune liegt momentan wortwoertlich auf Eis, weil er bei diesen Temperaturen kein Fundament giessen kann.

Nick's new hay barn is literally on ice at the moment because he cannot pour the cement foundation in these temperatures.

Probier's mal mit Gemuetlichkeit / The bare neccessities

Gestern haben Nick und ich es unserem Ziegenbock Jiggs gleichgetan, der hier mit offenem Maul auf seinen Hoernern ruhend die Mittagssonne geniesst. Wir waren allein auf der Ranch und haben es zur Abwechslung mal mit Gemuetlichkeit probiert. Wir haben unsere Huehner beobachtet und Eier an den unmoeglichsten Stellen gefunden. Nick hat mir gezeigt, wo er diesen Winter seine neue Heuscheune errichten will (naemlich hinter den Schuppen am Trout Pond). Und ich habe ihm gezeigt, was Cody und ich schon gelernt haben.

Yesterday, Nick and I did as Jiggs did. With his mouth open and leaning on his horns, our billie goat rested in the midday sun. We were alone on the ranch and - for a change - tried to enjoy "the bare neccesseties" of life. We watched our chickens and found eggs in the unlikeliest places. Nick showed me where he wants to build his new hay barn this winter (behind the sheds at the Trout Pond). And I showed him what Cody and I have learnt.

Nach Hirscheintopf von der eigenen Ranch mussten wir Cody, Romes und Nelli - diese Memmen - vor unserem Schafbock Muhackl retten, der sie ploetzlich in die Flanken attackierte und wie ein Huetehund herumtrieb. Schafboecke sind hier ziemlich gross ... und koennen beunruhigende Laute ausstossen. Mit schlotterten selbst die Knie, aber ich habe ihn mit dem Elektrostab vertrieben. Nick schaute nur zu. Dafuer bin ich jetzt die Heldin in den Augen der Pferde ;-) Wir sind mit 4-Wheeler und Gauge im Schlepptau ueber die Ranch gefahren, haben Wild beobachtet, Gras gecheckt, die Pferdeherde besucht (alle sehen wie Teddybaeren aus), Zaeune repariert (was Nick liebt und deshalb nicht als Arbeit zaehlt) und den Abend im dampfenden Whirlpool unter einem kalten Sternenhimmel verbracht. Sonntag im Wilden Westen.

After deer stew from our ranch we had to save Cody, Romes and Nellie - sissies! - from our sheep buck Muhackl who suddenly attacked them into and ran them around like a herding dog. Sheep bucks out here are pretty big ... and they can make disturbing sounds. I had weak knees but with the help of a hot shot I could make him leave. Nick just watched. But now I am my horses' hero ;-) We drove the 4-wheeler - with Gauge following - across the ranch, observed wild game, checked grass, visited the horse herd (they all look like teddy bears), fixed fences (which is fun for Nick and does not count as work) and ended the day in the steaming hot tub under a cold starry sky. Sunday in the Wild West.
