Wyoming im Film / Wyoming in the movies

Wyoming ist Schauplatz vieler Filme. Die meisten sind Western wie "Shane" aus den 50ern. Andere sind Liebesfilme wie "Brokebackmountain" ueber die Beziehung zweier schwuler Cowboys oder Komoedien wie "Cat Ballou" mit Jane Fonda. Der beruehmteste Wyoming-Film spielt am Devils Tower und wurde 1977 von Steven Spielberg gedreht: "Unheimliche Begegnung der dritten Art". Ausnahmsweise friedliche Ausserirdische besuchen die Erde. Als das Raumschiff wieder vom Devils Tower abhebt, nimmt es einen Erdenbuerger, gespielt von Richard Dreyfuss, mit auf die Reise. Technisch gesehen wirkt der Film mittlerweile ueberholt, aber die Story ist zeitlos.

Lots of movies are situated in Wyoming. Many are Westerns like "Shane", made in the 50ies. Or romance movies like "Brokeback Mountain" about the relationship between two gay cowboys. Or comedies like "Cat Ballou" with Jane Fonda. The best know Wyoming movie plays at Devils Tower and was directed by Steven Spielberg in 1977: "Close Encounters of the third kind". Extraterrestials - peaceful for a change - are visiting the earth. When their spacecraft takes off from Devils Tower again, it takes a human played by Richard Dreyfuss with it. The movie is outdated technically but the story is timeless.

Ein Wintertag / A winter's day

Gestern morgen bei Sonnenaufgang (s. Foto)schnell die Tiere gefuettert, dann mit dem Truck in die Stadt. Nick hat alle Abwasser- und Leitungsrohre fuer das Stucco-Haus gekauft (und dreitausend andere Dinge), ich die Lebensmittel fuer die Ranch fuer mindestens zwei Wochen. Tina deckt sich in den Secondhandlaeden der Umgebung ein ... und weiss nicht, wie sie alles wieder mit nach Hause nehmen soll. Naja, man kann Ronja beim Wachsen zusehen, so dass eine Menge Klamotten sicher in Wyoming bleiben werden.

Quickly fed the animals at sunrise (s. photo) yesterday morning and took the truck into town. While Nick bought loads of plumbing material for the stucco house (and 3000 other things), I got the groceries for the ranch for at least the next two weeks. Tina went shopping at secondhand stores ... and already does not know how to get all the stuff back home. Well, one can watch Ronja growing and lots of clothes will probably stay in Wyoming.

Sind noch ins Kino gegangen und dann um 4.30 Uhr morgens wieder auf der Ranch angelangt - waehrend eines Blizzards. Es war nicht allzu viel Schnee, aber aufgrund des starken Windes konnte man so gut wie nichts sehen. Das nennt man "Ground Blizzards". Zum Glueck waren wir allein auf der Strasse.

Saw a movie and returned to the ranch at 4.30 am - during another blizzard. There was not too much snow but due to the strong wind, the visibility was really bad. We call that a "ground blizzard". Luckily we were alone on the road.

Zum Film: "Did you hear about the Morgans?" mit Sarah Jessica Parker und Hugh Grant ist wirklich nichts Besonderes, aber wir haben ihn uns angeschaut, weil ein New Yorker Ehepaar, nachdem es einen Mord beobachtet hat, innerhalb des Zeugenschutzprogrammes nach Wyoming ausgeflogen wird. Hier prallen zwei Kulturen - und auch einige Klischees - zusammen. Wir haben trotzdem gut gelacht.

About the movie: "Did you hear about the Morgans?" with Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant really isn't very special but we wanted to see it because a New York City couple that witnesses a murder gets moved to Wyoming as part of the witness protection program. Cultures - and stereotypes - clash. We had some good laughs.
