Hohes Tempo beim Barrel Racing / High speed around the barrels

Wie wir in diesen Tagen die letzten schoenen Sonnenstrahlen genossen haben ... am Freitag soll ein Blizzard durchziehen ... und bis zu 20 Zentimeter Schnee hinterlassen. Nach dem Team Penning haben wir diese Woche ein Barrel Race angehaengt. Es wurde ganz schoen schnell. Die Rinder werden alle vier bis fuenf Tage auf eine andere Koppel getrieben, damit sie kurz vor dem Verladen (wo die Kaelber gewogen werden) noch mal ordentlich zulegen. Und kurz vor Saisonschluss haben wir damit begonnen, unseren zweijaehrigen Wallach Chester an den Sattel zu gewoehnen. Eventuell wird Lance sich noch ein- oder zweimal draufsetzen, bevor Chester mit den anderen Pferden auf die Winterkoppel kommt.

How we have enjoyed the last sunny days this week ... on Friday a blizzard will come through ... and leave up to 8 inches of snow. After team penning this week we continued with barrel racing. The horses got pretty fast. The cattle are moved from pasture to pasture every four to five days now so that they gain as much weight as possible before the calves will be weighed and shipped. And just before the season ends, we have started our 2-year old gelding Chester under the saddle. Maybe Lance will ride him once or twice, too before Chester and the other horses go on winter pasture. 

Karina und Jenny werden am Samstag abreisen, aber dann kommen fuer die letzte Saison-Woche Carol und Marty aus England, Carmen aus Deutschland (momentan an der amerikanischen Ostkueste heimisch) sowie Melanie aus Schweden. Bettina und Karoline bleiben noch bis Mittwoch.

Karina and Jenny will leave on Saturday. On the same day Carol and Marty from England, Carmen from Germany (who lives on the American East coast at the time) and Melanie from Sweden will arrive for the last week of the season. Bettina and Karoline are staying till Wednesday.

Herbst - ist es wirklich schon so spaet? / Fall - is it really that late?

Viehtrieb im Herbst / Cattle drive in fall

Am Donnerstag - einen Tag vor dem ersten Schnee dieses Herbstes - haben wir alle Rinder zur Ranch getrieben. Die Kaelber wurden von den Kuehen getrennt und gegen ansteckende Krankheiten geimpft. Sie werden in etwa einem Monat verkauft und den Winter ueber gemaestet. Der Kaeufer verlangt die Impfungen, man spricht von "pre-conditioning". Im naechsten Sommer kommen die Kaelber dann als Jaehrlinge wieder auf Weide - allerdings nicht bei uns. Wir behalten unsere Kuehe, die von den Bullen gedeckt wurden und im Fruehling wieder Kaelber bekommen.

On Thursday - one day before the first snow of this fall - we moved all cattle to the ranch. The calves were separated from the cows and vaccinated against contagious deseases. In about one month they will be sold and fattened in feedlots over the winter. The buyer requires the vaccinations, it's called "preconditioning". Next summer the calves will be out on pasture again, then as yearlings. But not on our place. We keep our cows which have been bred by the bulls and will have calves again next spring.

Mittlerweile ist es wieder mild, aber der Herbst hat endgueltig Einzug gehalten. Samstag sind Karina aus der Schweiz und Jenny aus England angereist. Waehrend die diesjaehrige Saison langsam dem Ende zugeht, sind wir schon fleissig am Buchen fuer naechstes Jahr. Falls Ihr (wieder)kommen wollt, wartet nicht zu lange ... insbesondere Juni wird schnell voll. Die Preise werden sich uebrigens - bis auf den Flughafentransfer - nicht aendern.

In the meantime it has been become mild again but fall is here to stay. Saturday Karina from Switzerland and Jenny from England arrived. And while this season is slowly closing, we are already busy booking for next year. If you want to come (again), don't wait too long ... especially June will be full soon. The rates will stay the same with the exception of the airport transfer.  

P.S. Angelica kommt uebrigens nicht aus Norwegen, sondern aus Schweden ;-)
