We did not expect a big blizzard like that when it started to snow Thursday evening. Friday morning power went off because the wet masses of snow broke still-leaved trees and power lines. While the whole world discussed the the US budget debacle, we were cut off from all communication. We learned later that we were lucky: While our cattle and horses survived thanks to trees and canyons, in South Dakota's prairie thousands of cattle and many horses died.
Karina und Jenny konnten nicht nach Hause fliegen, weil alle Strassen und der Flughafen gesperrt waren. Carol und Martina aus England und Melanie aus Schweden waren zwar schon in Rapid City, konnten aber nicht zu uns auf die Ranch kommen. Und Carmen war in Minneapolis gestrandet, von wo aus sie neun Stunden lang mit einem Mietwagen nach Rapid City fuhr. Am Montag waren dann alle neuen Gaeste hier und die "alten" abgereist. Ausser Bettina und Karoline, die uns erst am Mittwoch - zusammen mit Sonja - verlassen haben. Sonja, Nick vermisst die Diskussionen mit Dir :-)
Karina and Jenny could not fly home because all the roads and the airport were closed. Carol and Martina from England and Melanie from Sweden were already in Rapid City but could not come out to the ranch. And Carmen was stranded in Minneapolis from where it took her nine hours to drive in a rental car to Rapid City. On Monday finally all new guests had arrived and all "old" ones had left. Other than Bettina and Karoline who flew back to Germany on Wednesday - together with Sonja. Sonja, Nick misses the discussions with you :-)
Ann-Catrin hat Besuch aus Deutschland und wird ab dem Wochenende noch zwei Wochen Urlaub an der Westkueste machen, bevor sie wieder nach Hause fliegt. Und auch Carmen, Carol, Martina und Melanie werden sich am Samstag wieder auf den Weg machen (Fotos folgen). Aber am Freitag geht es noch mal zum Tanzen in die Bar.
Ann-Catrin has a visitor from Germany and - this weekend - will start a trip along the West Coast for two weeks before returning home. Carmen, Carol, Martina and Melanie will leave on Saturday again (photos later). But on Friday we'll go to the bar again and dance.
Wenn der Strom ausfaellt, gibt es auch kein Wasser mehr. Kein Telefon (Handyempfang ja eh nie), kein Fernsehen, kein Radio, kein Internet und - oh Schreck - kein Facebook ;-) Zum Einen zieht sich die Zeit, weil es weniger Ablenkungen gibt und man kaum das Haus verlassen kann, zum Anderen ist der Tag voll mit Taetigkeiten, die ansonsten kaum Zeit kosten. Herd, Waschmaschine, Licht, Heizung etc. stellt man per Knopfdruck an ... aber was, wenn kein Strom da ist?
When there is a power outage, there is no water anymore either. No phone (no cell phone reception any way), no TV, no radio, no internet and - oh dear - no Facebook ;-) Without any distractions and being able to leave the house much, time slows down a bunch. But the day is also filled with activities which usually don't take more than a moment. Stove, washing machine, light, heating etc. are just the push of a button away ... but what if there is no power?
Rita und Anja haben die Lebensmittel im Schnee gekuehlt und auf dem Holzofen gekocht, Sonja und Ann-Catrin haben Wassereimer in der Traenke gefuellt und hereingeschleppt, damit man das Clo spuelen konnte. Nick und Lance haben Holz zum Heizen geholt. Und abends haben wir uns (ungeduscht ;-) unterhalten, Spiele gespielt oder - bei Gas- und Kerzenlicht - Buecher gelesen. Eine interessante Erfahrung, aber keine, die ich allzu oft wiederholen moechte!
Rita and Anja cooled the groceries in the snow and cooked on the wood stove. Sonja and Ann-Catrin carried buckets of water from the horse tank into the lodge so we could flush the toilets. Nick and Lance got wood for heating. And in the evenings we talked (unshowered ;-), played board games or read books at the light of a candle or a gas lamp. An interesting experience but one I'd rather not repeat too often!
