Juni 2014: Hallo Frodo, ruhe in Frieden Snickers! / June of 2014: Hi Frodo, RIP Snickers!

Auf dem Weg zur Ranch: Ginger fuehrt /
On the way to the ranch: Ginger is leading

For those who are interested: I am catching up with my blog from June 20 and will sum up the year of 2014 within the next few weeks. After a rainy spring we started into the summer with lots of green grass. June was the month of baby animal, brandings and rodeos. And at the end of the month Antje and I took Twister and Bruno to participate in a Parelli Horsemanship Clinic - a highlight as in every year. Antje also helped with the ongoing training of "baby" Chester. The pretty chestnut has never thought of bucking, yet and keeps his cool in almost every circumstance. After only a very short time, our new horse, Frodo, became a favorite with the not so experienced guests ... you can rely on him ... and he rides like a sofa ;-) The saddest thing that happened: We lost our beloved Snickers. He had a colic and the vet could not help him anymore.

Volles Haus / Full house

Sanny und/and Dun It

First Lance and Rita returned. Now Rob (Nick's intern), Veronika, Sanny and Sandra have found their way to the ranch as well. Latter three will help us warm up horses for the guest season. Sanny and Sandra will only stay for two weeks but Veronika (from Sweden) will hopefully hold out longer ;-)

The horses are behaving well, also the new ones (Cassidy, Cloud and Gypsy), just Newt bucks happily once in a while ;-) Sanny has started to ride our three-year old Chester. We are taking it slow since Chester is not fully grown, yet. So far he's been really cool.

George has already moved to Brandy and Brandon up in Montana. Splash stayed and becomes more trusting every day. Unfortunately, we will have to part from Honey and Dun It. They need one person who works with them - not ever changing riders.

Turkey hunting season is in full swing but the hunters have to cope with Wyoming's extreme weather changes. Well, no one has said it would be easy ;-)

Our beeffalo Bernadette's buffalo genetics kicked in more and more (her dad was buffalo Junior, her mom an Angus-Longhorn mix). She has been jumping fences and visiting neighbors all winter. And the neighbors aren't that thrilled anymore. We had to shoot Bernadette. We gutted and skinned her (I think you'd prefer to not see the pics) and brought her to the butcher where the meat needs to hang for a while. I was sad but did not know any alternative solution. Buffalos are wild animals ... they don't respect fences.

Our first riding guests will arrive at the end of the next week ... we still have to prepare a lot.

Frohe Weihnachten! / Merry Christmas!

A buckskin (Dun It) in the evening light - always a looker!

I am almost forgetting the blog while posting on Facebook all the time ... you'll have to watch the movies there, though. I don't think I will muster the patience again to upload them here as well.

It is winter but there isn't too much snow and it's not too cold either. After a strike which has lasted for weeks my chickens have layed one (!) egg ... just to mention it again: one egg and more than 20 chickens ... well. Nick is talking about chicken noodle soup but we are not there, yet.

The animals are enjoying the calm of the winter. The horses are fatter than in summer even though they have to paw out old grass from underneath the snow. Which shows again that most horses are not made for too much and too good feed - especially grain.

And I am not made for chocolate which means a new year's diet is on the way ;-)

Was will man mehr ?!

Even though we don't have to do thaaat much right now, we are busy all day ... that's like with retired people who have so much on their plate that they have no idea how before retirement they had the time to go to work. All that Christmas hassle passed us out here on the ranch and I am finding the time to read books again. What more could I want for ?!

Nick and I wish all of you Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We are looking forward to meeting you or seeing many of you again. It's just about five months till the next season begins ;-) And yes, Lance comes back ...
