Das erste 2014-Kalb / The first 2014 calf

 Ja, wir leben noch ... aber wir sind momentan nicht mit so viel fotogenen Arbeiten beschaeftigt ;-) Vor ein paar Tagen wurde das erste Kalb des neuen Jahres geboren (s.o.). Eigentlich zu frueh, aber zum Glueck war die Nacht nicht so kalt. Mama und Papa hatten im April vergangenen Jahres ein verbotenes Date. Aber sobald das Kalb die erste Muttermilch (Kolostrum) getrunken hat, ist sein Immunsystem fit und es haelt auch kaelteste Temperaturen aus.

Yes, we are still alive ... but busy with less photogenic work ;-) A few days ago our first 2014 calf was born (s.above). A little too early but luckily the night had not been that cold. Mom and dad had had a forbidden date April of last year. But as soon as the calf drinks the first milk (colostrum), its immune system is strong and the calf can take even the coldest temperatures.

Die Pferde sind - bis auf drei duennere (s.u.) - immer noch auf Winterweide. Die Rinder und Schafe fuettern wir bereits. Und die Kater helfen immer fleissig dabei ;-)

The horses are - other than three skinnier ones (s.below) - still on their winter pasture. We are already feeding the cattle and sheep. And the tom cats always help with ;-)

Werde mich am Wochenende mal wieder ausfuehrlicher melden.

Die Kater helfen immer mit / The tom cats always help

... waehrend die Sonne schon aufgeht.
Wir fuettern diese drei Pferde, weil sie etwas zunehmen sollen. /
... while the sun is rising.
We are feeding these three horses because they need to gain a little.

Nick sucht Bernadette / Nick is looking for Bernadette

Zu Weihnachten hatte sich Beefalo Bernadette entschieden, unsere kleine Winterherde zu verlassen und zum Nachbarn und seiner Rinderherde zu uebersiedeln. Sie sprang ueber ein paar Zaeune und liess sich haeuslich nieder. Das fanden weder der Nachbar noch wir so toll. Also zog Nick auf Cloud aus, um Bernadette nach Hause zu bringen. Aber so ein Beefalo hat einen groesseren Freiheitsdrang als eine Durschnittskuh. Es kam zum Showdown in Nachbars Korral!

On Christmas Day beefalo Bernadette had decided to leave our little winter herd and move over to the neighbor and his cattle herd. She jumped a few fences and settled right down. Neither the neighbor nor we were thrilled. So Nick took Cloud and rode out to bring Bernadette home. But a beefalo loves her freedom much more than the average cow. Showdown at the neighbor's corral! 

Bernadette schlug immer wieder Haken, und irgendwann konnte Cloud nicht mehr so schnell durch den Schnee galoppieren ... er war ja auch nicht in Bestform, sondern kam direkt aus dem Winterurlaub. Die erste Runde ging an Bernadette. (Gaeste, die an unserem Team Penning teilgenommen haben, koennen sich vielleicht an Bernadette erinnern ;-) Dann trieben wir sie in eine engere Umzaeunung, aus der sie den Tag zuvor herausgesprungen war. Ich blieb dieses Mal vor Ort, um das Rindsviech vom Springen abzuhalten, waehrend Nick den Trailer holte. Die zweite Runde ging an Nick.

Bernadette cut across the pasture at high speed and at some point Cloud could not keep up anymore in the snow ... he was not in his best form since Nick just pulled him out of his winter vacation. The first round went to Bernadette. (Guests who participated in our team penning, may remember Bernadette ;-) We then moved her into a smaller fenced-in area out of which she had jumped the day before. This time I stayed to keep the bovine from jumping while Nick fetched the trailer. The second round went to Nick.

Jetzt sind alle Rinder an der Ranch, und wir fuettern sie mit Heu. Zum Einen, weil es langsam Zeit wurde, zum Anderen, um Bernadette zum Bleiben zu ueberreden. Bin gespannt, wie lange sie es dieses Mal aushaelt.

Now all the cattle are at the ranch and we are feeding them with hay. Because it had become time to do so and because we'd like to persuade Bernadette to stay. I am curious how long she'll hang around this time.

Jetzt vergesse ich uebers Facebook-Posten schon den Blog ... die Filme muesst Ihr Euch dort anschauen. Ich glaube nicht, dass ich nochmal die Geduld aufbringe, sie auch hier hochzuladen.

I am almost forgetting the blog while posting on Facebook all the time ... you'll have to watch the movies there, though. I don't think I will muster the patience again to upload them here as well.

Es ist Winter, aber es liegt nicht allzu viel Schnee, und es ist nicht allzu kalt. Nach wochenlangem Streik haben meine Huehner endlich wieder ein (!) Ei gelegt ... wohlgemerkt ein Ei bei ueber 20 Huehnern ... naja. Nick spricht schon von Huehnernudelsuppe, aber soweit sind wir noch nicht!

It is winter but there isn't too much snow and it's not too cold either. After a strike which has lasted for weeks my chickens have layed one (!) egg ... just to mention it again: one egg and more than 20 chickens ... well. Nick is talking about chicken noodle soup but we are not there, yet.

Die Tiere geniessen die Winterruhe, die Pferde sind trotz des kargen Wintergrases, das sie aus dem Schnee scharren muessen, fetter als im Sommer. Was wieder einmal beweist, wie schaedlich zu viel gutes Futter - insbesondere Getreide - fuer Pferde sein kann. Sie sind einfach nicht dafuer gemacht.

The animals are enjoying the calm of the winter. The horses are fatter than in summer even though they have to paw out old grass from underneath the snow. Which shows again that most horses are not made for too much and too good feed - especially grain.

Ich bin leider auch nicht fuer Schokolade gemacht, so dass mal wieder eine Neujahrsdiaet ansteht ;-)

And I am not made for chocolate which means a new year's diet is on the way ;-)

Obwohl wir eigentlich gar nicht sooo viel zu tun haben, sind wir den ganzen Tag beschaeftigt ... das ist wie mit den Rentnern, die gar nicht mehr wissen, wie sie frueher ueberhaupt die Zeit hatten, um arbeiten zu gehen. Der Weihnachtstrubel geht hier draussen an uns vorbei, und ich komme endlich mal wieder dazu, Buecher zu lesen. Was will man mehr ?!

Even though we don't have to do thaaat much right now, we are busy all day ... that's like with retired people who have so much on their plate that they have no idea how before retirement they had the time to go to work. All that Christmas hassle passed us out here on the ranch and I am finding the time to read books again. What more could I want for ?!

Nick und ich wuenschen Euch allen frohe Weihnachten und ein gutes neues Jahr! Wir freuen uns darauf, Euch kennenzulernen bzw. viele von Euch wiederzusehen. Es sind nur noch knapp fuenf Monate zum Saisonbeginn ;-) Und ja, Lance kommt wieder ...

Nick and I wish all of you Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We are looking forward to meeting you or seeing many of you again. It's just about five months till the next season begins ;-) And yes, Lance comes back ...
