Freitag war so ein schoener Tag, sonnig, warm, windstill ... Wyoming tut das gern, laesst Dich einen Tag vom Fruehling traeumen, nur um Dir dann drei weitere Monate Winter um die Ohren zu schlagen. Heute schneit und stuermt es wieder, und die Temperaturen fallen ...

Friday was a beautiful day, sunny, warm, without wind ... Wyoming likes to do this, taunt you one day with the dream of spring just to follow up with another three months of real winter. Today it is snowing again, the wind blows and the temps are falling ...

Nick ist fuer ein paar Tage weg auf Familienbesuch ... als ob die Ranch es wuesste: Der Wassertank friert ein, fast 40 Pferde stehen ploetzlich beim Nachbarn im Garten, Beefalo Bernadette besucht einen anderen Nachbarn, um sein gutes Heu zu fressen, Kaelber Oreo und Maybelline tanzen nachts auf meiner Terasse und bringen Gauge und mich dem Herzinfarkt nahe ... und ... ein Hund stirbt.

Nick is gone for a few days visiting family ... as if the ranch knows: The water tank freezes, close to 40 horses are suddenly standing in the neighbor's garden, beefalo Bernadette took off to another neighbor to eat his nice hay, calves Oreo and Maybelline were dancing on my porch at night causing Gauge and I to almost get a heart attack ... and ... one dog dies.

Bordercollie Penny, die wir in Pflege hatten und schon seit Jahren kennen, wurde ueberfahren. Als ich abends zur Lodge gehen wollte, sah ich Penny direkt vor unserem Haus in einer Blutlache am Strassenrand liegen. Der Fahrer hat leider nicht angehalten. Huetehunde wie Penny jagen gern Fahrzeuge, das ist ihnen schwer abzugewoehnen, aber wir haetten uns die Muehe machen muessen ... Zwinger und Kette sind keine wirklichen Optionen. Es kommen nur ein paar Fahrzeuge am Tag vorbei, aber eines reicht. Penny ist wohl auf dem Eis ausgerutscht, und der Fahrer konnte wohl nicht mehr bremsen. Ich weiss es nicht. Ich weiss nur, dass Penny schnell gestorben sein muss - der einzige Trost - und ich musste sie nicht erschiessen.

Border Collie Penny who we were taking care of and have known for years was hit by a vehicle. When I wanted to walk up to the lodge in the evening, I found Penny directly in front of our house laying in her blood on the side of the road. Unfortunately, the driver never stopped. Herding dogs like Penny like to chase cars. It's difficult to keep them from doing it but we should have tried harder ... a kennel or a chain aren't real options. There are only a very few vehicles driving by in a day but one was enough. Penny must have slipped on the ice, the driver must not have been able to break in time. I don't know. I only know that Penny must have died quickly - my only consolation - and I did not have to shoot her.

Am Freitag, diesem wunderschoenen Tag, habe ich Penny mit dem 4-wheeler rausgefahren und unter einen Baum gelegt (der Boden war zu hart gefroren, um sie zu begraben), ganz in der Naehe der anderen toten Tiere, von denen wir uns ueber die Jahre verabschieden mussten. Und wie die meisten von Euch aus eigener Erfahrung wissen: Jedes dieser Tiere nimmt ein Stueck von Deinem Herzen mit.

On Friday, this amazing day, I drove Penny out on the 4-wheeler and laid her down under a tree (the ground was frozen too hard to bury her), close to all the other animals which we had to part from throughout the years. And as most of you know from experience: Every one of these critters takes away a piece of your heart.

Jetzt vergesse ich uebers Facebook-Posten schon den Blog ... die Filme muesst Ihr Euch dort anschauen. Ich glaube nicht, dass ich nochmal die Geduld aufbringe, sie auch hier hochzuladen.

I am almost forgetting the blog while posting on Facebook all the time ... you'll have to watch the movies there, though. I don't think I will muster the patience again to upload them here as well.

Es ist Winter, aber es liegt nicht allzu viel Schnee, und es ist nicht allzu kalt. Nach wochenlangem Streik haben meine Huehner endlich wieder ein (!) Ei gelegt ... wohlgemerkt ein Ei bei ueber 20 Huehnern ... naja. Nick spricht schon von Huehnernudelsuppe, aber soweit sind wir noch nicht!

It is winter but there isn't too much snow and it's not too cold either. After a strike which has lasted for weeks my chickens have layed one (!) egg ... just to mention it again: one egg and more than 20 chickens ... well. Nick is talking about chicken noodle soup but we are not there, yet.

Die Tiere geniessen die Winterruhe, die Pferde sind trotz des kargen Wintergrases, das sie aus dem Schnee scharren muessen, fetter als im Sommer. Was wieder einmal beweist, wie schaedlich zu viel gutes Futter - insbesondere Getreide - fuer Pferde sein kann. Sie sind einfach nicht dafuer gemacht.

The animals are enjoying the calm of the winter. The horses are fatter than in summer even though they have to paw out old grass from underneath the snow. Which shows again that most horses are not made for too much and too good feed - especially grain.

Ich bin leider auch nicht fuer Schokolade gemacht, so dass mal wieder eine Neujahrsdiaet ansteht ;-)

And I am not made for chocolate which means a new year's diet is on the way ;-)

Obwohl wir eigentlich gar nicht sooo viel zu tun haben, sind wir den ganzen Tag beschaeftigt ... das ist wie mit den Rentnern, die gar nicht mehr wissen, wie sie frueher ueberhaupt die Zeit hatten, um arbeiten zu gehen. Der Weihnachtstrubel geht hier draussen an uns vorbei, und ich komme endlich mal wieder dazu, Buecher zu lesen. Was will man mehr ?!

Even though we don't have to do thaaat much right now, we are busy all day ... that's like with retired people who have so much on their plate that they have no idea how before retirement they had the time to go to work. All that Christmas hassle passed us out here on the ranch and I am finding the time to read books again. What more could I want for ?!

Nick und ich wuenschen Euch allen frohe Weihnachten und ein gutes neues Jahr! Wir freuen uns darauf, Euch kennenzulernen bzw. viele von Euch wiederzusehen. Es sind nur noch knapp fuenf Monate zum Saisonbeginn ;-) Und ja, Lance kommt wieder ...

Nachdem wir bereits fuer die Pferde eine Wasserleitung aus einem Reservoir gelegt haben, damit sie fliessendes Wasser haben, waren heute die Rinder dran - siehe Fotos. Komischerweise waren weder Pferde noch Rinder allzu interessiert, denn sie haben sich daran gewoehnt, Schnee zu fressen. Aber Nick und ich haben jetzt trotzdem ein besseres Gewissen ;-)

After we already built a siphon from one of the reservoirs for the horses so that they have running water, we've built another one for the cattle today - see pics. Funnily enough neither the horses nor the cattle were too interested since they got used to eating snow. But Nick and I have a better conscience now anyway ;-) 

Am Sonntag haben wir Rita zum Flughafen gefahren (die nach langer Irrfahrt mittlerweile in der Schweiz angelangt ist). Auf dem Rueckweg haben wir ueber 100 Eisenbahnschwellen mit einem Gewicht von ca. 7000 Kilo mitgenommen, die wir im Sommer zum Zaeunebauen benoetigen. Den letzten Berg direkt nach Hulett haben wir dann aber trotz Ketten nicht geschafft. Am naechsten Tag mussten wir mit dem Traktor zurueckfahren, um den Anhaenger abzuholen (s. Foto). Die naechsten 150 Schwellen werden wir erst abholen, wenn kein Schnee mehr liegt ;-)

On Sunday we brought Rita to the airport (who finally arrived after a long odysee). On the way home we picked up more than 100 railroad ties with a weight of about 14,000 lbs which we will use for fencing in summer. We did not make the last hill right after Hulett, despite chains. Had to return the next day to pull the trailer home with the tractor (s. photo). The next 150 ties we won't pick up till the snow is gone ;-)

Ansonsten haben JoAnn und ich Brote und Plaetzchen fuer die Nachbarschaft gebacken. Morgen wollen Heike und ich zum Weihnachtsshopping nach Rapid City fahren. Nick will unterdessen einem Nachbarn bei der Rinderarbeit helfen ... und dabei hoffentlich eine unserer Kuehe finden, die seit Wochen verschollen ist. Und am Samstag findet die New Haven-Weihnachtsparty im Gemeindezentrum statt.

Other than that: JoAnn and I baked bread and cookies for the neighbors. Tomorrow Heike and I will go Christmas shopping in Rapid City. In the meantime, Nick will help a neighbor with cattle work ... and hopefully find one of our cows who has been missing for weeks. On Saturday there will be the New Haven Christmas party at the Community Center.

Die Jagdsaison geht ihrem Ende zu. Silke ist wieder in Deutschland. Und Rita zaehlt die Tage bis zu ihrer Abreise ... mit Schrecken. Wir verkaufen viel Heu. Letztens habe ich den Pferden Salz auf ihre Winterkoppel gebracht und war fuer ein paar Minuten die Attraktion des Tages. Passiert ja sonst nichts da draussen ... inzwischen hat es auch wieder geschneit, aber bisher ist es auszuhalten. Nicht viel Neues im Westen ... ausser ein paar Fotos.

Hunting season is about to end. Silke is back in Germany. And Rita is counting the days to her departure ... unhappily. We are selling lots of hay. The other day I brought salt to the horses on their winter pasture and was the main attraction for a few moments. Nothing else happening out there ... in the meantime it has snowed again but the weather is still bearable. Nothing new from the West ... just a few pics.

Melanie und/and Leo

Die Saison ist zu Ende. Zuerst sind Carmen, Marty und Carol abgereist, spaeter - nach einem Viehtrieb bei schoenstem Wetter - auch Melanie, Ann-Catrin und ihr Freund Titus. Und Lance packt schon, um endlich wieder in die Waerme - sprich Florida - fahren zu koennen. Er will nach dem Winter wiederkommen.

The season has ended. First Carmen, Marty and Carol left and later - after a cattle drive in best weather - also Melanie, Ann-Catrin and her boyfriend Titus. Lance is already packing to drive back into the heat - that is Florida. He is planning on coming back after the winter.

Nach all dem Schnee rufen nun auch viele Leute an, um Heu zu kaufen. Und Border Collie-Dame Penny ist wieder zurueck in New Haven. Tav kann sie diesen Winter ueber nicht bei sich behalten. Gauge freut sich, insbesondere da Sip ja mit Lance gehen wird.

After all this snow people are calling about buying hay. And border collie lady Penny has returned to New Haven since Tav cannot keep her this winter. Gauge is happy especially since Sip is leaving with Lance.

In einer Woche kommen noch Antilopenjaeger, ab November Hirschjaeger, und kurz davor haben wir noch viel Rinderarbeit. Leider ohne Gaeste.

In about one week we'll have antelope hunters, from November on deer hunters and just before that we have a bunch of cattle work. Unfortunately without guests.

P.S. Wir haben auch ein neues Pferd, eine kleine kraeftige Stute namens Gypsy, die ein richtiger Gluecksfall zu sein scheint.

P.S. We got a new horse, a small powerful mare named Gypsy who seems to be a real catch.
