Jetzt vergesse ich uebers Facebook-Posten schon den Blog ... die Filme muesst Ihr Euch dort anschauen. Ich glaube nicht, dass ich nochmal die Geduld aufbringe, sie auch hier hochzuladen.

I am almost forgetting the blog while posting on Facebook all the time ... you'll have to watch the movies there, though. I don't think I will muster the patience again to upload them here as well.

Es ist Winter, aber es liegt nicht allzu viel Schnee, und es ist nicht allzu kalt. Nach wochenlangem Streik haben meine Huehner endlich wieder ein (!) Ei gelegt ... wohlgemerkt ein Ei bei ueber 20 Huehnern ... naja. Nick spricht schon von Huehnernudelsuppe, aber soweit sind wir noch nicht!

It is winter but there isn't too much snow and it's not too cold either. After a strike which has lasted for weeks my chickens have layed one (!) egg ... just to mention it again: one egg and more than 20 chickens ... well. Nick is talking about chicken noodle soup but we are not there, yet.

Die Tiere geniessen die Winterruhe, die Pferde sind trotz des kargen Wintergrases, das sie aus dem Schnee scharren muessen, fetter als im Sommer. Was wieder einmal beweist, wie schaedlich zu viel gutes Futter - insbesondere Getreide - fuer Pferde sein kann. Sie sind einfach nicht dafuer gemacht.

The animals are enjoying the calm of the winter. The horses are fatter than in summer even though they have to paw out old grass from underneath the snow. Which shows again that most horses are not made for too much and too good feed - especially grain.

Ich bin leider auch nicht fuer Schokolade gemacht, so dass mal wieder eine Neujahrsdiaet ansteht ;-)

And I am not made for chocolate which means a new year's diet is on the way ;-)

Obwohl wir eigentlich gar nicht sooo viel zu tun haben, sind wir den ganzen Tag beschaeftigt ... das ist wie mit den Rentnern, die gar nicht mehr wissen, wie sie frueher ueberhaupt die Zeit hatten, um arbeiten zu gehen. Der Weihnachtstrubel geht hier draussen an uns vorbei, und ich komme endlich mal wieder dazu, Buecher zu lesen. Was will man mehr ?!

Even though we don't have to do thaaat much right now, we are busy all day ... that's like with retired people who have so much on their plate that they have no idea how before retirement they had the time to go to work. All that Christmas hassle passed us out here on the ranch and I am finding the time to read books again. What more could I want for ?!

Nick und ich wuenschen Euch allen frohe Weihnachten und ein gutes neues Jahr! Wir freuen uns darauf, Euch kennenzulernen bzw. viele von Euch wiederzusehen. Es sind nur noch knapp fuenf Monate zum Saisonbeginn ;-) Und ja, Lance kommt wieder ...

Ein paar Bilder von gestern Abend, als wir gecheckt haben, wie es den Pferden geht ... tagsueber minus 15 bis minus 20 Grad Celsius, nachts viel kaelter. Wie machen die Tiere das nur? Ich friere sogar mit Kleidung und Decken in unserem Haus ... das allerdings nur unterm Dach isoliert ist, nicht in den Waenden und am Fussboden. Heute Abend gehts nach Hulett, Ritas Abschied feiern. Am Sonntag muss sie wieder in die Schweiz fliegen ...

A few pics from yesterday evening when we checked on the horses ... less than 0 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, much colder (down to negative 20 Fahrenheit) in the night. How do the animals deal with that? I am cold with clothes and blankets in our house ... which only has insulation in the roof, though. Not the walls and the floor. Tonight we are going to Hulett. Rita is having a good-bye party. On Sunday she has to leave for Switzerland again ...

Thomas und Sabine (Gruss an Walter!) sind fleissig am Fotografieren ... ich hoffe, dass ich morgen die Bilder vom Branding, dem Rodeo in Rapid City, dem Ritt nach Hulett und der Pferdeauktion in Belle Fourche bekomme ;-) Nein, wir haben keine neuen Pferde gekauft, aber ich war sehr versucht. Wir haben allerdings schon 38 (Patch und Scotch sind ja jetzt bei Brandy), und die fressen viel Gras und Heu.

Thomas and Sabine (Greetings to Walter!) are taking lots of photos ... I hope to get some pics of the branding, the rodeo in Rapid City, the ride to Hulett and the horse auction in Belle Fourche tomorrow ;-) No, we did not buy any more horses even though I was very tempted. We already have 38 (Patch and Scotch are with Brandy) and they eat a lot of grass and hay.

Ebenfalls neu dabei sind Frank und Susann. Wiederholungstaeter sind Sonja und Ryan. Dafuer mussten Marie und Sanny gehen ... wir vermissen Euch! Heute ein paar Tierbilder, von denen ich persoenlich nie genug haben kann. Die Temperaturen sind leider wieder gestiegen. Und wir koennen uns mittlerweile nicht mehr daran erinnern, wann der letzte Tropfen Regen fiel.

Also new here are Susann and Frank. Sonja and Ryan are repeaters. And Marie and Sanny had to leave ... we miss you! Today a few animal pics which I personally can never get enough of. The temperatures have risen again. And we cannot remember anymore when the last drop of rain fell.

Das erste Gras / The first Grass

Einen Tisch zu bauen ist nicht so einfach, wie man denkt ... das ist Millimeterarbeit. Die "Maedchen" sind fleissig am Lackieren. Ihr werdet das Ergebnis in einem der naechsten Blogs sehen ... falls wir die Tische in die Lodge bekommen ...

To build a table is not as easy as you may think ... it's about the tiniest part of an inch. The "girls" are still verithaning the wood. You'll see the result in one of the next blogs ... if we manage to get the tables into the lodge.

Am Sonntag waren wir alle auf einer Pferdeauktion (nur Schauen ;-) ausser Nick, der mit seiner Mutter JoAnn Brandy, Brandon und Emmett auf ihrer Ranch in Sued-Dakota besucht hat. Tav hat seine Haare schneiden lassen und sich einen neuen Hut gekauft ... er ist kaum wiederzuerkennen ... jetzt muss nur noch der Bart ab.

On Sunday we all went to a horse sale (just looking ;-) other than Nick who visited Brandy, Brandon and Emmett in South Dakota, together with his mom, JoAnn. Tav got his hair cut and bought a new hat ... we barely recognized him ... now he just needs to shave his beard.

Ich haette gern ein Foto von Dori gemacht, als sie halb in einer der fuenf Gefriertruhen hing, die geputzt werden mussten, aber dann wuerde ich wohl nicht mehr in den Genuss ihrer Kochkuenste kommen.

I would have liked to take a picture of Dori halfway in and halfway out of one of the five freezers which needed to be cleaned but I would have risked not be able to enjoy her food anymore.

Am Montag halfen Tav, Barbara und Silke einem Nachbarn beim Schafescheren ... mal wieder. Tav repariert weiterhin Zaeune, und Barbara hilft Nick beim Bau der Arena.

On Monday Tav, Barbara and Silke helped the neighbors (again) to shear sheep. Tav is still fixing fences and Barbara is helping Nick with the new arena.

Gestern durften die Pferde das erste Mal fuer ein paar Stunden auf Gras, die Aufregung war gross. Auch wenn es mittlerweile kaum noch schneit, ist es immer noch kalt und ungemuetlich. Das Gras spriesst bisher nur spearlich. Auch hier hat sich das Wetter veraendert ... sei es "global warming" oder nicht.

Yesterday the horses were allowed on grass the first time (for a few hours). They were pretty excited. It does not snow much anymore but it's still cold. The grass is just coming out. The weather has changed here as well ... call it global warming or not.

Under geliebter Blade hat ein neues Heim gefunden. Blade ist seit August lahm, der Tierarzt hat Arthrose diagnostiziert. Blade geht jetzt zu einer Familie, deren Toechter ihn ab und ab mal fuer kurze Zeit reiten werden. Mehr ist nicht moeglich, obwohl er erst 9 Jahre alt ist.

Our beloved Blade has found a new home. He has been lame since August and the vet diagnosed arthritis. Blade will now move to a family whose daughters will ride him once in a while for a short time. More is not possible even though he is just 9 years old.

Bailey hat sich von seiner Sehnenverletzung wieder erholt. Romes wird diesen Sommer Kadoka in Sued-Dakota Gesellschaft leisten (bei Brandy und Brandon). Danach sehen wir weiter. Er ist eben schon sehr alt. Bo soll als Kinderpferd verkauft werden ... er ist zwar offiziell erst 17, aber wir glauben, dass das wohl nicht ganz stimmen kann. Scotch hat sich gepruegelt und ist noch lahm, hoffentlich aber nur voruebergehend. Alle anderen sind fit, so z.B. Rena, Tucker und Jazz (siehe oben und unten).

Bailey recovered from his tendon injury. Romes will spend the summer with Kadoka in South Dakota (with Brandy and Brandon). Then we'll see ... he is already very old. Bo will be sold as a kids' horse ... he is only 17, officially, but we assume he must be older. Scotch got into a fight and kicked and is lame now but hopefully just temporarily. All others are fit such as Rena, Tucker, and Jazz (s. above and below).

Internet fuer alle / Internet for all

Heike, Sidney, Tav, Whiskey

Waehrend ich auf die Telefongesellschaft wartete, die heute einen DSL-Anschluss in die Lodge legen sollte, machten sich Heike (auf ihrem neuen EINFARBIGEN Pferd Sidney) und Tav auf Whiskey auf zu einem Ritt. Ganz unten seht Ihr die Beiden auch noch mal mit Heikes Hunden Chance und Smokey und unseren beiden Randalierern Penny und Gauge. Hunde werden hier nicht gassi gefuehrt, sie laufen allein herum oder begleiten uns auf den Ritten. Gut fuer Gauges Diaet ;-)

While I was waiting for the phone company to put a DSL connection into the lodge, Heike (on her new SOLID colored horse Sidney) and Tav on Whiskey went on a ride. Below you also see the two with Heike's dogs Chance and Smokey and our canines Penny and Gauge. Here one does not run dogs, they run by themselves or accompany us on our rides. Good for Gauge's diet ;-)

Ja, alle Gaeste, soweit sie ein Laptop, Blackberry oder aehnliches mitbringen, haben jetzt waehrend des Urlaubs Internetanschluss (kostenlos). Nur Handyempfang koennen wir immer noch nicht bieten, aber dafuer ein normales Telefon, fuer das man Telefonkarten kaufen kann.

Ye, all guests - if they bring their laptop, blackberry or similar - will have internet connection during their vacation (no fee). We still cannot offer cell phone reception but we have a normal phone which you can use with phone cards.

Nick kommt heute von einem einwoechigen Urlaub bei seiner Tochter Nikki und ihrer Familie an der Westkueste zurueck. Fuer ihn und Tav beginnt morgen wieder das harte Leben ... Bauen in der Lodge. Tav hatte die vergangene Woche nur Pferde gearbeitet. Aber wie jeder Cowboy ist er zu faul, zu Fuss zu gehen. Wenn er ein Pferd von der Weide holt, springt er immer ohne Sattel auf dessen Ruecken. Eine gute Uebung fuers Pferd, manchmal ein bisschen abenteuerlich fuer den Cowboy ;-)

Nick is coming back today from a one-week vacation at his daughter's Nikki and her family on the West coast. He and Tav will have to get back to real work again tomorrow ... building in the lodge. Tav has just been working horses for the last week. And like every cowboy he is too lazy to walk on foot. When he gets his horse from the pasture, he always jumps on bareback. A good exercise for the horse, sometimes a bit adventurous for the cowboy ;-)
