Die Tage vergehen ... Vanessa und Chris wollten noch nicht weg, aber gestern ging ihr Flieger. Dafuer kam Alessandra. Und auch Barbara, die eine Woche in Bayern verbracht hatte. Am vergangenen Wochenende waren ja alle auf dem Ranchrodeo in Sturgis und spaeter in Deadwood, wo Linda wieder einmal Geld gewonnen hat. Dieses Mal fast 300 Dollar fuer einen Einsatz von 5 Dollar.

The days go by ... Vanessa and Chris did not want to leave but their plane left yesterday. Alessandra came. As well as Barbara who had spent a week in Bavaria. Last weekend everyone went to the ranch rodeo in Sturgis and the to Deadwood where Linda won money again. This time close to $300 for $5 she risked.

Wir haben viel Rinder- und Zaunarbeit auf der Ranch. Nick bereitet die Traktoren auf die Heuernte vor. Und Linda und Barbara fangen demnaechst mit dem Unkrautsprayen an. Ich werde am Samstag auf mein viertaegiges Parelli-Seminar fahren, aber vorher werde ich hoffentlich noch einen neuen Blog online stellen.

We got lots of cattle and fence work. Nick is preparing the tractors for haying. And Linda and Barbara are starting to spray weeds. I will go on my 4-day Parelli clinic on Saturday but hopefully I will post another blog entry before.

Britta, Annett and Vanessa are still here. Rudi, Romina and Sabine are back home and Jasmin, Claudia and Gabi arrived. Chris, too ... but with some delay. Today the newbies have to show what they know because tomorrow we'll go on a long ride in the prairie of South Dakota.

Britta und ich hatten gestern Geburtstag, juenger sind wir leider nicht geworden. Heute feiert Barbara, leider in Deutschland. Nick hat mir eine Liege geschenkt ... fuer all die freien Stunden, die ich im Sommer habe :-)

Yesterday it was Britta's and my birthday, unfortunately we did not get younger. Today Barbara is celebrating, in Germany. Nick gave me a recliner for outside ... for all the spare hours which I have in summer ;-)

Das erste Gras / The first Grass

Einen Tisch zu bauen ist nicht so einfach, wie man denkt ... das ist Millimeterarbeit. Die "Maedchen" sind fleissig am Lackieren. Ihr werdet das Ergebnis in einem der naechsten Blogs sehen ... falls wir die Tische in die Lodge bekommen ...

To build a table is not as easy as you may think ... it's about the tiniest part of an inch. The "girls" are still verithaning the wood. You'll see the result in one of the next blogs ... if we manage to get the tables into the lodge.

Am Sonntag waren wir alle auf einer Pferdeauktion (nur Schauen ;-) ausser Nick, der mit seiner Mutter JoAnn Brandy, Brandon und Emmett auf ihrer Ranch in Sued-Dakota besucht hat. Tav hat seine Haare schneiden lassen und sich einen neuen Hut gekauft ... er ist kaum wiederzuerkennen ... jetzt muss nur noch der Bart ab.

On Sunday we all went to a horse sale (just looking ;-) other than Nick who visited Brandy, Brandon and Emmett in South Dakota, together with his mom, JoAnn. Tav got his hair cut and bought a new hat ... we barely recognized him ... now he just needs to shave his beard.

Ich haette gern ein Foto von Dori gemacht, als sie halb in einer der fuenf Gefriertruhen hing, die geputzt werden mussten, aber dann wuerde ich wohl nicht mehr in den Genuss ihrer Kochkuenste kommen.

I would have liked to take a picture of Dori halfway in and halfway out of one of the five freezers which needed to be cleaned but I would have risked not be able to enjoy her food anymore.

Am Montag halfen Tav, Barbara und Silke einem Nachbarn beim Schafescheren ... mal wieder. Tav repariert weiterhin Zaeune, und Barbara hilft Nick beim Bau der Arena.

On Monday Tav, Barbara and Silke helped the neighbors (again) to shear sheep. Tav is still fixing fences and Barbara is helping Nick with the new arena.

Gestern durften die Pferde das erste Mal fuer ein paar Stunden auf Gras, die Aufregung war gross. Auch wenn es mittlerweile kaum noch schneit, ist es immer noch kalt und ungemuetlich. Das Gras spriesst bisher nur spearlich. Auch hier hat sich das Wetter veraendert ... sei es "global warming" oder nicht.

Yesterday the horses were allowed on grass the first time (for a few hours). They were pretty excited. It does not snow much anymore but it's still cold. The grass is just coming out. The weather has changed here as well ... call it global warming or not.

Under geliebter Blade hat ein neues Heim gefunden. Blade ist seit August lahm, der Tierarzt hat Arthrose diagnostiziert. Blade geht jetzt zu einer Familie, deren Toechter ihn ab und ab mal fuer kurze Zeit reiten werden. Mehr ist nicht moeglich, obwohl er erst 9 Jahre alt ist.

Our beloved Blade has found a new home. He has been lame since August and the vet diagnosed arthritis. Blade will now move to a family whose daughters will ride him once in a while for a short time. More is not possible even though he is just 9 years old.

Bailey hat sich von seiner Sehnenverletzung wieder erholt. Romes wird diesen Sommer Kadoka in Sued-Dakota Gesellschaft leisten (bei Brandy und Brandon). Danach sehen wir weiter. Er ist eben schon sehr alt. Bo soll als Kinderpferd verkauft werden ... er ist zwar offiziell erst 17, aber wir glauben, dass das wohl nicht ganz stimmen kann. Scotch hat sich gepruegelt und ist noch lahm, hoffentlich aber nur voruebergehend. Alle anderen sind fit, so z.B. Rena, Tucker und Jazz (siehe oben und unten).

Bailey recovered from his tendon injury. Romes will spend the summer with Kadoka in South Dakota (with Brandy and Brandon). Then we'll see ... he is already very old. Bo will be sold as a kids' horse ... he is only 17, officially, but we assume he must be older. Scotch got into a fight and kicked and is lame now but hopefully just temporarily. All others are fit such as Rena, Tucker, and Jazz (s. above and below).

Savannah macht sich / Savannah is doing great

Gestern war ich endlich mal wieder ausreiten. Habe versucht, Tramp ein wenig flotter zu machen ;-) Mit dabei waren auch Dori auf Pink (s.u.) und Barbara auf Savannah (s.o.). Savannah macht sich wirklich gut. Barbara fuehrt sie langsam an Aufgaben heran. Gestern klappte es dann auch bald mit dem Bachueberqueren. Und waehrend wir Spass beim Reiten haben, baut Nick Tische fuer die Lodge (s.u.), und Tav repariert Zaeune.

Yesterday I got to ride again for a change. Tried to speed up Tramp ;-) Dori on Pink (s. below) and Barbara on Savannah (above) came along. Savannah is doing great. Barbara is teaching her to deal with tasks. Yesterday it did not take long for Savannah to cross the creek. And while we enjoyed our ride, Nick built tables for the lodge (s. below) and Tav repaired fences.

Am Mittwoch werden Nick, Tav und Barbara einem Nachbarn beim Schafescheren helfen. Ich fahre nach Rapid City, um Linda abzuholen. Morgen mehr.

On Wednesday Nick, Tav and Barbara will help a neighbor with shearing sheep. I am goint to drive to Rapid City to pick up Linda. More tomorrow.

Abendritt / Evening ride

Morgen soll es wieder schneien, deshalb sind wir heute noch mal auf einen langen flotten Ritt aufgebrochen. Tav auf Gordo, Nick auf Poncho, Barbara auf Lady und ich - hinter der Kamera - auf Leftie. Als wir in der Daemmerung zurueckkamen, erwarteten Dori und Dave uns mit einem leckeren Hirsch-Eintopf. Mehr Nachrichten morgen ...

Tomorrow it is supposed to snow again. That's why we went on a long brisk ride today. Tav on Gordo, Nick on Poncho, Barbara on Lady and I - behind the camera - on Leftie. When we came home at dusk, Dori and Dave had a delicious deer stew ready for us. More news tomorrow ...

Ranchalltag / Daily life on the ranch

Dori auf/on Jet. Tav auf/on Smoky, Barbara auf/on Lady und Hunde/and dogs

Wir bereiten uns gerade auf die ersten Jagdgaeste vor. Es gibt noch viel zu tun, aber Tav, Dori und Barbara finden trotzdem noch ein bisschen Zeit zum Reiten. Und die Hunde sind immer dabei. Heute Abend wollen wir Frauen (zusammen mit Heike) die Bar in Hulett unsicher machen. Nick, Dave und Tav muessen auf der Ranch bleiben.

We are getting ready for the first hunting guests. There is still lots to do but Tav, Dori and Barbara find time to go riding a bit. And the dogs always go along. Tonite we women (including Heike) want to go to the bar in Hulett. Nick, Dave and Tav have to stay home.

Brandon, Brandy (schon ziemlich schwanger mit ihrem zweiten Kind) und Emmett bereiten sich langsam, aber sicher auf ihre Abreise nach Sued-Dakota und ein neues Kapitel in ihrem Leben vor.

Gordo, Dori, Dave, Grady und/and Kadoka

Diese Woche gab es viele Neuankoemmlinge. Unsere Koechin Dori reiste mit Ehemann Dave und Hund Grady (Fotos folgen) aus Wisconsin an - rechtzeitig zum Beginn der Truthahnjagdsaison. Dave wird einen Monat bleiben, bevor er wieder nach Hause faehrt. Tav ist gluecklich, dass die Zeit der Tiefkuehlmahlzeiten zu Ende ist. Nick, Brandon und Emmett hatten es da besser, da sie ja Ehefrauen bzw. Muetter haben, die sie am Leben erhalten.

This week saw lots of new people and critters. Our cook Dori arrived from Wisconsin with husband Dave and dog Grady (photos will follow) - just in time for turkey season. Dave will stay one month bevor returning home. Tav is happy because the time of frozen TV dinners is over. Nick, Brandon and Emmett fared better because they have wives and mothers who keep them alive.

Gestern haben Nick und ich Gordo gekauft, einen jungen schwarz-weissen Tobiano Paint. Gordo ist freundlich, aber ziemlich dominant. Aber wofuer haben wir einen Wrangler, wenn nicht zum Trainieren von Pferden? Und Tav liebt Herausforderungen.

Yesterday Nick and I bought Gordo, a young black and white Tobiano Paint. Gordo is friendly but pretty dominant. Hey, for what do we have a wrangler if not for training horses? And Tav loves a challenge.

Ebenfalls neu ist Kadoka (Foto folgt), ein routiniertes Ranchpferd, das Brandy gegen den unerfahreneren Viento eingetauscht hat. Kadoka und Chica haben sich sofort verliebt ... eine kluge Stute waehlt einen Wallach, der keine Ansprueche stellt ;-)

Another newbie is Kodoka (photo will follow), an experienced ranch horse which Brandy traded the less experienced Viento in for. Kadoka and Chica fell in love at first sight ... a smart mare choses a gelding which won't have any demands ;-)

Was sonst noch geschah? Wir suchen nach einem neuen Pick-up, da unsere langsam, aber sicher den Geist aufgeben. Tav sucht nach einem neuen Auto, da er seines zu Schrott gefahren hat. Aber der Markt ist wie leer gefegt. Jeder sucht einen sparsamen Benziner angesichts der steigenden Benzin- und - hier in den USA - noch hoeheren Dieselpreise.

What else happended? We are looking for a new pick-up since ours won't make it for that much longer. Tav is looking for a new car since he drove his down the canyon. But the market is empty. Everyone is looking for a gas vehicle which gets a good mileage because gas prices are increasing, not to mention the even higher diesel prices here in the US.

In unserer Pferdetraenke leben jetzt Fische, die die Algen fressen sollen ... hoffentlich haben die Pferde sie noch nicht verschluckt.

Fish now live in our horse water tank, they are supposed to control the algea ... hopefully they haven't been swallowed by the horses, yet.
