Wyoming-Winter sind nichts fuer Weicheier / Wyoming winters are not for sissies

Despite the cold the horses have ticks now - but not in summer anymore
(you see Leftie and Poncho scratching each other).

Either it is really cold or it's a touch warmer and snows. And then there are the few days in between when it's not freezing and the snow melts ... and then freezes again as solid ice. Perfect to break one's legs. That applies to both humans and animals.

Fotos folgen bald.

Our new (well, renovated) cabin for riding guests starts to look more habitable. Plumbing and electrical lines are done. As are walls and ceilings. Doors and windows. We insulated and chinked it. Kitchen and bath room are in but we still have to paint, put the wood stove in, furniture etc. Nick does most of the work, I help once in a while. Pics will follow soon.

Winter distractions? When we don't work or play with the critters (more me than Nick), we read. We don't have TV reception but we watch DVDs here and there. And I study Parelli Natural Horsemanship (books, magazines, DVDs). Nick goes jogging. If you need a lot of entertainment, you won't survive a Wyoming winter ;-)

Yesterday, Heike and I met at the Ponderosa Bar in Hulett to eat burgers. You (meaning woman) either cook, have your mother-in-law JoAnn invite you or go to town. No delivery service out here ;-)

Gauge is missing Penny and is looking forward to Sip who'll return to the ranch with Lance in April. Till then our Labrador will have to do with the cats ... better than nothing ...

We are looking forward to our imminent "summer vacation" in Germany and Ireland. Phillip who lives on the ranch with his family this winter will take care of the ranch and the animals. He already got a long list with chores but I don't think he will call the cats in the morning with "kittie, kittie, kittie" ... that's asking a bit too much of a cowboy ;-)

Excuse me?! Five cats?! (yes Gauge, and there are even two more)

The snow is just a minor detail.

Schafe verladen bei Sonnenaufgang / Loading sheep at sunrise

Tomorrow it's supposed to snow again ... unfortunately. This past week the weather was beautiful. Only Nick, Anja and I were on the ranch and we had plenty to do. Rita returned yesterday and Anja and I are happy because we don't have to cook anymore. Oh, and then we bought two new horses ... more about them in the next blog ;-)

Winterwiederholung / Winter repetition

Der Winter ist zurueck. / Winter has returned.

After some almost sommerly weeks, winter returned yesterday with lost of snow and low temps. When we fed the horses today, we heard a pinging sound: The animals were covered in icicles which cliked against each other. We need the precipitation ... but balmy spring days feel much better ;-)

Bullen gesucht! / Bulls wanted!

Nick und/and Leo (Foto/Photo: Dave Bair)

Under "New Additions" Dave has published the first pics from this year's photo workshop: http://drbair.zenfolio.com/p281811212 On the first photo you can see this years photo cowgirl, Kelsi, Wace's new girlfriend.

Nick and I have been looking at bulls yesterday. We are planning to buy 4 to 5 for our 125 cows. In summer they will be allowed to stay with the girls for about two months. We are looking at animals now so that on sale date we know which ones to bid for.

Thanks a lot for all the advice on Jazz! We will try some of it (one thing after the other, not all simultaneously ;-) and keep you posted.

From 80s and sunshine down to freezing and snow within 12 hours:
Irma on Indy, Nathalie on Pep and Rita on Tucker

What a week: Ups and downs ... and not just weather-related ones. On Monday we shipped our yearling cattle which will be fattened up throughout the winter and then butchered. Due to the drought they were not as fat as planned but the losses weren' too bad.

On Tuesday we had fun team penning ... in T-Shirts and temps in the 80ies. Then Wednesday came, with frost and snow. Irma, Rita, Nathalie, Vicki and Jan took the car and went sightseeing (Mount Rushmore, Deadwood etc.) and shopping. Antje took a break. And three new guests managed to find the ranch despite snow flurries: Carmen, Antje's friend, as well as Carol and Martina from England (photos in the next blog).

On Wednesday I went to town to bring Frost to the vet again. Shortly after we stopped the antibiotics, his leg started to swell again. On the Interstate my truck's transmission broke. It took hours for Hap to come out with his truck to pull the horse trailer. (Nick had the other truck to guide antelope hunters.) We managed to reach the clinic right before closing time. Frost's hoof could not be saved anymore. The body had rejected it. I had to make the decision to put Frost down. A terrible day.

Thursday our neighbor invited us to ride with his bisons in the prairie (with the necessary safety  distance, of course): an impressive experience. And on Friday everyone sat in the saddle again despite the cold. Friday night the temps were in the teens but on Saturday morning a beautiful sun rose and bathed the white landscape in a golden light.

Leider mussten Irma, Nathalie, Rita, Jan, Vicki und Carmen abreisen ... wir sehen uns naechstes Jahr wieder!

Unfortunately, Irma, Nathalie, Rita, Jan, Vicki and Carmen had to leave again ... we'll see you next year!

Unsichtbare Bullen / Invisible bulls

Gauge, Rita auf/on Jet, Karo auf/on KC, Kat auf/on Tinkerbelle, Nick auf/on Poncho

Last weekend our turkey hunters saw bulls on our ranch. The neighbor missed his. But since this neighbor had just been trampled into the ground by a mad mother cow, we went out to look for his bulls (see above). I rode Stella who almost managed to get rid of me but once in a while I get lucky, too. We found the hole in the fence and repaired it but the bulls got away ... and were later seen by our hunters again.

Foto siehe unten.

They met in New Haven in the summer of 2009 and have been visiting each other at least once a year since then: northern lights Lena and Christine and southern lights (one could say North Italians) Stefan, Dagmar and Sandra. See photo below.

Kat has left: via Germany to West Africa onto the oil rig where she is working. She is coming back at the end of May. As usual she took many photos which I'll show to you at the end of the week. You may look forward to revelations from Tav and Nick ;-)

And I have to go up to the ranch now, the first goslings are there.

Arbeit in der Kaelte / Work in the cold

Doerte und/and Tinkerbelle

Yesterday and today we helped neighbors with cattle work and tomorrow we are going to help another neighbor. At pretty frosty temperatures. It's fun nevertheless ... and my office work does not get done ... as usual. We also want to buy some new horses but that has to wait till the weekend ...
