Das erste 2014-Kalb / The first 2014 calf

 Ja, wir leben noch ... aber wir sind momentan nicht mit so viel fotogenen Arbeiten beschaeftigt ;-) Vor ein paar Tagen wurde das erste Kalb des neuen Jahres geboren (s.o.). Eigentlich zu frueh, aber zum Glueck war die Nacht nicht so kalt. Mama und Papa hatten im April vergangenen Jahres ein verbotenes Date. Aber sobald das Kalb die erste Muttermilch (Kolostrum) getrunken hat, ist sein Immunsystem fit und es haelt auch kaelteste Temperaturen aus.

Yes, we are still alive ... but busy with less photogenic work ;-) A few days ago our first 2014 calf was born (s.above). A little too early but luckily the night had not been that cold. Mom and dad had had a forbidden date April of last year. But as soon as the calf drinks the first milk (colostrum), its immune system is strong and the calf can take even the coldest temperatures.

Die Pferde sind - bis auf drei duennere (s.u.) - immer noch auf Winterweide. Die Rinder und Schafe fuettern wir bereits. Und die Kater helfen immer fleissig dabei ;-)

The horses are - other than three skinnier ones (s.below) - still on their winter pasture. We are already feeding the cattle and sheep. And the tom cats always help with ;-)

Werde mich am Wochenende mal wieder ausfuehrlicher melden.

Wir fuettern diese drei Pferde, weil sie etwas zunehmen sollen. /

Sandra auf/on Whiskey, Rita auf/on Playboy, Lance auf/on Poco und/and Anna auf/on Tucker

Sandra musste leider wieder abreisen, und wir vermissen ihren nie abreissenden norddeutschen Redefluss. Dafuer ist Sanny aus Muenchen gekommen (auch sehr kommunikativ veranlagt ;-) Und Anna ist natuerlich auch noch da. Sanny, Anna, Lance, Rita, Nick und ich haben nach wie vor viel zu tun, bevor in zwei Wochen die Reitsaison beginnt.

Unfortunately, Sandra had to leave again and we miss her never ending flow of words (and Northern German dialect). Sanny arrived from Munich (she is very communicative as well ;-) And Anna is still here as well. Sanny, Anna, Rita, Lance, Nick and I still have a lot to do before the riding season starts in two weeks.

Tanja, die 2007 und 2008 fuer uns gearbeitet hat, ist auch mal wieder fuer ein paar Wochen in Wyoming (auf einer Nachbarranch). Es war schoen, sie wiederzusehen.

Tanja who worked for us in 2007 and 2008 has come back to Wyoming for a few weeks (she is staying on a neighboring ranch). It was fun to see her again.

Kurz ein Wort zu den neuen Pferden: Poco und Playboy sind zwei superbequeme Pferde, die eigentlich sehr brav sind ... bis jemand sie mal wirklich fordert. Dann kommt ihre dominate Seite zum Vorschein. Lance und Sanny arbeiten viel mit den Beiden. Jack ist ein sehr sensibles schnelles Pferd, das auf kleinste Hilfen reagiert (Sandras neuer Liebling). Kein Anfaengerpferd, aber eine Freude fuer fortgeschrittene Reiter. Sanny hat jetzt begonnen, mit Apache zu arbeiten, ich mit Twister. Beide sind noch sehr jung und unerfahren. Apache ruht in sich, Twister hat mehr Feuer.

A few words about the new horses: Poco and Playboy are very smooth horses which behave nicely ... till someone challenges them. Then they show their dominant side. Lance and Sanny are working with them a lot. Jack is a very sensitive fast horse which reacts to the lightest cue (Sandra's new favorite horse). Not a beginner's horse but fun for intermediate riders. Sanny has now started to work with Apache and I with Twister. Both are still young and inexperienced. Apache is pretty calm, Twister has more fire.

Buster laeuft wieder (er hatte ja sein Becken gebrochen, Anna trainiert ihn fast jeden Tag). Und auch Chica geht es besser, je mehr sie geritten wird (sie hat Arthrose). Ginger hat dank dem neuen Gurt keinen Gurtdruck mehr. Und Leo bewegt sich dank Zusatznahrung entspannter (er hat Hufrolle). Nur bei Jazz wachsen die kahlen Stellen in der Sattellage nicht zu. Wir werden es mit einer Lammfelldecke versuchen.

Buster works again (he broke his pelvis one year ago, Anna trains on him almost every day). And Chica is doing better with every ride (she has arthritis) as well. Thanks to the new cinch, Ginger does not get cinch sore anaymore. And Leo can move better again (he has navicular) due to a new supplement. Just Jazz' bald spots on her back don't grow over. We will try it with a lamb wool pad.

Ich bin auch wieder Bruno geritten, der sich nach der langen Pause eigentlich sehr gut benommen hat. Er ist etwas duenn geworden. Ich werde es mit einer speziellen Wurmkur versuchen und muss daran arbeiten, seine Muskeln aufzubauen.

I have ridden Bruno again who behaved relatively well after the long break. He got somewhat skinny. I will try a special wormer and will work on building his muscles.

Die Sonne scheint, es ist warm, und wir geniessen den Fruehling!

Der Name ist Jack / Jack's the name

Am Montag sind Nick und ich nach Rapid City gefahren, um Savannah zu ihrem neuen Besitzer zu bringen. Er hatte sie bereits vor zwei Wochen gekauft, aber dann hatte sie sich verletzt und musste sich erstmal auskurieren.

On Monday Nick and I drove to Rapid City to deliver Savannah to her new owner. He had already bought her two weeks ago but she injured herself and needed to heal first.

Da wir eh schon mit Anhaenger in der Stadt waren, haben wir uns gleich einen huebschen Rotfuchs angeschaut, der zum Verkauf stand. Er ist eine Vollblut-Quarter Horse-Mischung und etwas leichter gebaut mit langen Beinen und hoeherem Kopf. Nick war begeistert von dem Wallach, der zwar mehr Temperament und Tempo hat als ein typisches Quarter Horse, aber einfach zu handeln und sehr bequem zu reiten ist - kein Pferd fuer Anfaenger, aber sicher und Spass fuer Fortgeschrittene. Mich muss man ja nie zum Pferdekauf zwingen, obwohl ich bei Arabern wahrscheinlich eine Grenze ziehen wuerde ;-)

Since we were already in town with a trailer, we looked at a pretty red sorrel which was for sale. He is a Thoroughbred-Quarter Horse mix, a little lighter built with long legs and a higher head. Nick liked the gelding right away. Despite a bit more spirit and speed than the average Quarter Horse has, the sorrel was easy to handle and smooth to ride - not a horse for beginners but safe and fun for intermediate riders. Well, no one has to force me to buy a horse even though I might draw a line at Arabians ;-)

Der Wallach heisst Jack ... Nick mischt sich selten in Pferdenamen ein (dann aber mit katastrophalen Folgen: "Teaspoon " (Teeloeffel), "Whiplash" (Schleudertrauma), "Snake" (Schlange) etc.) ... in diesem Fall bestand er auf Jack ... es haette schlimmer kommen koennen, und Jack wird es ziemlich schnuppe sein, was fuer einen Namen er hat. Savannah (und Classy) werde ich trotzdem vermissen.

The gelding's name is Jack ... Nick does not very often involve himself in horse naming (but if then with terrible consequences: "Teaspoon", "Whiplash", "Snake" etc.) ... in this case he insisted on Jack ... it could have been worse and Jack will very likely not care whatsoever what his name is. Nevertheless, I will miss Savannah (and Classy).
