Alle unsere Pferdchen / All our horses

Sandra auf/on Whiskey, Rita auf/on Playboy, Lance auf/on Poco und/and Anna auf/on Tucker

Unfortunately, Sandra had to leave again and we miss her never ending flow of words (and Northern German dialect). Sanny arrived from Munich (she is very communicative as well ;-) And Anna is still here as well. Sanny, Anna, Rita, Lance, Nick and I still have a lot to do before the riding season starts in two weeks.

Tanja who worked for us in 2007 and 2008 has come back to Wyoming for a few weeks (she is staying on a neighboring ranch). It was fun to see her again.

A few words about the new horses: Poco and Playboy are very smooth horses which behave nicely ... till someone challenges them. Then they show their dominant side. Lance and Sanny are working with them a lot. Jack is a very sensitive fast horse which reacts to the lightest cue (Sandra's new favorite horse). Not a beginner's horse but fun for intermediate riders. Sanny has now started to work with Apache and I with Twister. Both are still young and inexperienced. Apache is pretty calm, Twister has more fire.

Buster works again (he broke his pelvis one year ago, Anna trains on him almost every day). And Chica is doing better with every ride (she has arthritis) as well. Thanks to the new cinch, Ginger does not get cinch sore anaymore. And Leo can move better again (he has navicular) due to a new supplement. Just Jazz' bald spots on her back don't grow over. We will try it with a lamb wool pad.

I have ridden Bruno again who behaved relatively well after the long break. He got somewhat skinny. I will try a special wormer and will work on building his muscles.

The sun is shining, it is warm and we enjoy spring!

Winterwiederholung / Winter repetition

Der Winter ist zurueck. / Winter has returned.

After some almost sommerly weeks, winter returned yesterday with lost of snow and low temps. When we fed the horses today, we heard a pinging sound: The animals were covered in icicles which cliked against each other. We need the precipitation ... but balmy spring days feel much better ;-)

Bullen gesucht! / Bulls wanted!

Nick und/and Leo (Foto/Photo: Dave Bair)

Under "New Additions" Dave has published the first pics from this year's photo workshop: http://drbair.zenfolio.com/p281811212 On the first photo you can see this years photo cowgirl, Kelsi, Wace's new girlfriend.

Nick and I have been looking at bulls yesterday. We are planning to buy 4 to 5 for our 125 cows. In summer they will be allowed to stay with the girls for about two months. We are looking at animals now so that on sale date we know which ones to bid for.

Thanks a lot for all the advice on Jazz! We will try some of it (one thing after the other, not all simultaneously ;-) and keep you posted.

Pferdesorgen und -hoffnungen / Horse worries and hopes

Was ist das? / What is this?

Last year we had about 40 horses but close to ten of them were not - or only sometimes - ridable. And I am not talking about temporary lameness, bite marks where the saddle goes which disappear again etc. It all started with Buster, our beautiful black and white Paint. In April he broke his pelvis - no idea how it happened. He had to spend four months alone in a small stable till he was allowed on pasture again. His pelvis has grown together slightly uneven but that does not have to mean anything. We will now start to ride him again lightly. The other day I saw this older gentleman play with the young geldings ... and suddenly all his four legs were in the air and the horse on the ground ... ice! Maybe that is how he broke his pelvis last year. This time nothing happened ... but Buster was embarrassed ;-)

We parted from quite a few horses this winter which were physically not fit enough anymore or just not suited for a guest business. But they could be used as kids' mounts, brood mares or one-person horses etc. This was really difficult for me to do but as long as I could find them a good new home, it felt right. We are in the middle of a drought and hay and grass are rare. We cannot keep every horse and buy new ones at the same time.

Ginger, an older and super smooth Apaloosa mare (half gaited horse) who loves to chase cows, could not be ridden any more because of cinch sores. She has light, slightly loose skin behind her elbows and a round belly. The cinch always moved to the front. The vet suggested a very expensive operation which was not necessarily going to be successful. Then Les, the photographer, suggested a supra cinch (see photos) which was developed for gaited horses with more leg action. The back cinch is tightened a bit more than the front cinch (both still being comparatively loose). Ginger's rescue! (And instead of more than a 1000 dollars for the operation the cinch only costs about 70 bucks.) This cinch makes the whole saddle more stable and we are considering to use it also for horses with no visable withers. So far we had to cinch them very tightly to keep the saddle in place.

And then there are Vegas and Leo, two older and well trained geldings with hoof problems. Both were probably drugged when we bought them for a lot of money and did not know as much about hooves as we do now. (We bought Leo at an auction where we could not test ride him.) Here in the Wild West horse sellers get away with a lot of things. Vegas is chronically foundered on one foot. Thanks to the right trimming method (Pete Ramey) he is ridable again. In winter he is barefoot but in summer we need to protect his thin sole with shoes. Which is another problem altogether because it's so hard to get a farrier to come out to the ranch. We tried hoof boots (which are put on and removed every day) but no matter whether Easyboots or Renegades or ... : Vegas lost them all out on the ranch.

Leo has beginning navicular syndrome which a lot of Quarters Horse get because one wants to breed their hooves to be small and pretty. Special shoes can help but they fall off more easily and then we have the farrier problem again. Les has recommended a supplement called Equipride which helped one of his horses. It does not heal the disease but can slow it down and make the whole hoof and ligaments and tendons stronger. One can also inject horses with navicular and block their nerves but then they feel less in their hooves which is dangerous in a terrain like ours. There are few alternatives for horses like Vegas and Leo. They are too much horse to work for kids and beginners (who would ride them less often and hard) and they cannot be used as brood mares. Thus, it is so important to keep them in the best shape possible.

Kommt Zeit, kommt Rat.

My gelding Doc has navicular syndrome as well. He is past 20 and still fat and happy. And he worked his whole life on the ranch ... I cannot get myself to have him put down just yet. Time will tell ... hopefully.

And I still get sad thinking about Frost who was very healthy but had to be put down last summer due to a hoof abscess which had not been not treated correctly.

We will go into the new season with a lot more ridable horses. After last year's riding season we got Kadoka, Poco, Apache, Twister, Playboy and Jack. And at the end of this year we will start riding Chester who we bought as a colt in 2011. There is just one horse left I worry about and I'd be grateful for suggestions.

Our mare Jazz has a small hairless spot on her back. Where the saddle goes, of course. And when this spot is rubbed open, Jazz starts to buck. The vet has tried everything he can think off and cannot find what's wrong. I applied various medications (steroids have been injected as well) but nothing helps. Silke has suggested Heparin salve which I will try for sure but if anyone has a different idea, please let me know. Jazz is so much fun to ride. A small raw spot just should not cause such a big problem ...

Gordos Zaehmung / The taming of Gordo

Menschenbaby (Garrett) und Hundebabies (Border Collies): Ach, wie suess!
Human baby (Garrett) and dog babies (Border Collies): Oh how cute!

One year ago at the Black Hills Stockshow, we bought a quite useful mare (Sunny) for little money and unfortunately a quite lame gelding (Leo) for a lot of money. As Tav used to say: Everything is allowed in love and when selling horses ... well.

This year Nick and I will instead drive to the West coast with his daughter Brandy and her kids to visit his other daughter Nikki and her family. The live on the border between Washington and Oregon. We will need about two days to get there. But before that Emmett will have his first wrestling match on Saturday.

As I mentioned before, Ryan from Chicago bought our black mare Pearl. Pearl is great but sometimes so fast that she loses her riders (Tine, Sandra ...). Now Ryan moved to Hulett and in with cowboy Josh who bought our black paint gelding Gordo. Gordo excelled at bucking ...but it seems that Ryan has a good influence on him, see photo below. Hope it stays that way.

Schnee, Schimmel, Leben und Tod / Snow, greys, life and death

Mit Captain im Trailer durch die Badlands / With Captain in the trailer through the Badlands

A few days ago we were sweating at over 80 degrees, today it has been snowing without end. Life in Wyoming is full of drama, small as well as big ones.

2009 I desperately wanted a grey in the herd (not to mention a buckskin which I still don't have). Then Tucker came along ... and faster than I could think Pink, Smoky, Scotch and Frost. Well, and since Thursday we have a sixth grey: Captain. As soon as the weather gets nice again, I will take some photos. The handsome strong gelding comes from South Dakota's Badlands (s. above).

Some of my geese have been sitting on eggs for the last few weeks. Now the first set of goslings (s. below with mum, dad and auntie ... or so) has hatched. When I walked by the empty nest, I heard a cheep ... a small beak showed through the shell of an egg. Mum and siblings had apparently left someone behind ... when they did not show up all day, I helped the little gosling out of its shell. It was already weak and cold but thanks to a heat lamp and foster mum Rita's care, Humphry is now healthy and agile. Only his family still does not want to deal with him, so we probably have to go on raising him by hand (photo in the next blog).

How are our other patients doing? Calf Ruby will never be an imposing cow but she is doing fine. Buster (s. below) is frustrated but will unfortunately have to spend more time in his stall so his pelvis can heal. And Scotch (s. below) will stay even though we aren't exactly sure if his leg will hold up to riding. We sent Paint Patch as a pasture buddy with Kadoka to Brandy and Brandon. Patch is growing old and cannot climb hills that well anymore.

A few days ago a lion must have run through the herd. The hunters found tracks. The fence was down in several spots where the animals had fled. Only Tinkerbelle was injured but her wounds are healing well. Buffalo Daisy did not do so well. Even though one could not see anything, there was blood in her urine. She became more and more lethargic. This morning we found her dead on the pasture. She must have had internal injuries. We got Daisy as a calf in 2003, unfortunately she did not become very old.

And then the last remaining walls of the New Haven Store fell down in an evening storm (s. below) ... Nick had built a new foundation and had cleaned up the building almost 10 years ago but after that there has never been enough time and/or money to finish the project.

Pferde und Reiter / Horses and Riders

Rita und/and Jet

Yesterday Rita (on Jet) and I (on Tinkerbelle) went riding. Today we all worked in the arena, also with cattle. Stella was a bit oppositional as usual but at least she's never boring. Look at the pics. And yes, yesterday was Nick's birthday (the 55 th). Brandy, Brandon, Emmett and Garrett came back and our bed room is finally insulated. Other than that: many turkeys and turkey hunters.
