Am Donnerstag erwarben wir bei einer Auktion vier schoene Jungbullen: zwei reine Angus und zwei Angus-Simmental-Mischungen. Ich hatte mal wieder meine Kamera vergessen, aber Rita, die endlich wieder in New Haven ist, hatte gluecklicherweise ihr iPhone dabei. Obwohl die Bullen erst zwei Jahre alt sind, wiegen sie schon mehr als die meisten unseren Pferde.

On Thursday we bought four nice young bulls at an auction: two purebred Angus and two Angus-Simmental composites. I had forgotten my camera - as usual - but Rita, who is finally back in New Haven, luckily had her iPhone with her. Even though the bulls are only two years old, they already weigh more than most of our horses.

Jetzt sind wir alle dabei, Haus und Hof fuer die beginnende Sommersaison vorzubereiten, fuer unsere Jagd- und Reitgaeste, fuer die Aussaat von Heu und Getreide (wenn es endlich regnen wuerde), fuer die Kuehe und Kaelber, die im Mai kommen werden, und und und.

Now we are busy with getting everything ready for summer season, for our hunting and riding guests, for farming hay and grains (if it would just rain), for the cows and calves which will arrive in May and and and.

Nick arbeitet gleichzeitig an der Teachers Cabin, baut neue Zaeune, trimmt Pferdehufe, plant die Beweidung und recherchiert den Anbau von Obstbaeumen. Wir haben mehr Projekte als Zeit, haben uns aber fest vorgenommen, ab Ende kommender Woche wieder taeglich Pferde zu trainieren.

Nick is working on the Teachers Cabin, building new fences, trimming horse hooves, planning grazing and researching fruit trees. We have more projects than time but we are set on starting to train horses again by the end of the coming week.

Es steht nun fest: Nach fast zehn Jahren ist Juno nicht mehr der Herdenfuehrer. Er wurde von Captain abgeloest. Junos Frauen - Rena und Jazz - halten aber weiterhin zu ihm ;-)

It's a fact now: After almost ten years, Juno is not the herd leader anymore. Captain took his position. But Juno's women - Rena and Jazz - are still on his side ;-)

Nick und ich waren gestern unterwegs, um uns Bullen anzuschauen, die wir kaufen wollen. Fuer unsere 125 Kuehe brauchen wir ca. 4 bis 5 Bullen. Die duerfen dann im Sommer zwei Monate bei den Damen bleiben. Wir schauen uns die Tiere jetzt an, damit wir dann zum Auktionstermin wissen, fuer welche wir bieten wollen.

Nick and I have been looking at bulls yesterday. We are planning to buy 4 to 5 for our 125 cows. In summer they will be allowed to stay with the girls for about two months. We are looking at animals now so that on sale date we know which ones to bid for.

Vielen Dank fuer alle Tipps zum Thema Jazz! Wir werden einiges davon ausprobieren (nacheinander, nicht gleichzeitig ;-) und halten Euch auf dem Laufenden.

Thanks a lot for all the advice on Jazz! We will try some of it (one thing after the other, not all simultaneously ;-) and keep you posted.

Verlorene Rinder suchen / Looking for stray cattle

Ein langer Tag, aber die fuenf Bullen sind gefunden. /
A long day but the five bulls are found.

Habe mich heute tatsaechlich mal wieder aufs Pferd (Bruno) geschwungen. Wir mussten verloren gegangene Rinder auf Nachbars Weiden suchen ... leider vergeblich. Dafuer haben Team und Gaeste vergangene Woche einem Nachbarn geholfen, fuenf Bullen zu finden - der Ritt dauerte den ganzen Tag. Da trennt sich die Spreu vom Weizen ... reittechnisch gesehen. Alle haben durchgehalten. Kompliment!

Swung myself onto a horse (Bruno) again today. We had to look for stray cattle on a neighbor's pastures ... in vain. Last week the team and the guests helped another neighbor find five bulls - they rode all day long. A ride that separated the wheat from the chaff ... as far as riding skills go. Everyone made it. Congratulations! 

Lisas letzte Woche auf New Haven ist angebrochen. Wir sind schon jetzt traurig. Wer wird sich um Buddy und Hannah kuemmern? Wieder als Gaeste dabei: Carola und Klaus, die dieses Jahr Carolas Bruder Ralf mitgebracht haben. Frank, Susann und Ryan sind am Samstag gefahren, Sonja wird uns am Mittwoch verlassen ... Sch ... ade!

This is Lisa's last week on New Haven. We are so sad. Who will take care of Buddy and Hannah? They have come back: Carola and Klaus who brought Carola's brother Ralf along this year. Frank, Susann and Ryan left on Saturday, Sonja will leave on Wednesday ... sh ... oot!

Mike reisst gerade das alte Dach vom Bunkhaus ab (in dem Nick und ich wohnen). Fuer ein paar Tage darf es jetzt tatsaechlich nicht regnen, bis das neue Dach drauf ist. Leider haben wir nun seit mehr als einem Monat keinen Tropfen Regen mehr gesehen.

Mike is just taking the old roof off the bunkhouse (where Nick and I live). Hopefully it won't rain for a few days till the new roof is on. Not much danger there. Unfortunately, we haven't seen a drop of rain for more than a month.

Alle Pferde sind wieder fit ... ausser Frost, der ganz boese geschlagen wurde und nur auf drei Beinen durch die Gegend huepft. Wir hoffen, dass es nur eine Prellung und kein Knochen gebrochen ist.

All the horses are back to normal ... except Frost who got kicked severely and can only hop on three legs. We hope that it's just a bad bruise and no broken bone.

Am Wochenende sichteten unsere Truthahnjaeger Bullen auf der Ranch. Der Nachbar vermisste seine. Da aber besagter Nachbar gerade von einer wuetenden Mutterkuh krankenhausreif getrampelt worden war, machten wir uns auf die Suche (siehe oben). Ich ritt Stella, die mich beinahe abgesetzt haette, aber manchmal braucht der Mensch eben auch etwas Glueck. Das Loch im Zaun haben wir gefunden und repariert, aber die Bullen entkamen ... und wurden spaeter wieder von den Jaegern gesichtet.

Last weekend our turkey hunters saw bulls on our ranch. The neighbor missed his. But since this neighbor had just been trampled into the ground by a mad mother cow, we went out to look for his bulls (see above). I rode Stella who almost managed to get rid of me but once in a while I get lucky, too. We found the hole in the fence and repaired it but the bulls got away ... and were later seen by our hunters again.

Sie haben sich im Sommer 2009 in New Haven kennengelernt und treffen sich jedes Jahr mindestens einmal in Deutschland, Nordlichter Lena und Christine und Suedlichter (man koennte auch Norditaliener sagen) Stefan, Dagmar und Sandra. Foto siehe unten.

They met in New Haven in the summer of 2009 and have been visiting each other at least once a year since then: northern lights Lena and Christine and southern lights (one could say North Italians) Stefan, Dagmar and Sandra. See photo below.

Kat ist abgereist: ueber Deutschland nach Westafrika auf die Oelplattform, auf der sie arbeitet. Ende Mai kommt sie wieder. Sie hat natuerlich wieder viele Fotos gemacht, die ich Euch Ende der Woche zeige. Ihr duerft Euch auf Enthuellungen von Tav und Nick freuen ;-)

Kat has left: via Germany to West Africa onto the oil rig where she is working. She is coming back at the end of May. As usual she took many photos which I'll show to you at the end of the week. You may look forward to revelations from Tav and Nick ;-)

Und ich muss jetzt hoch zur Ranch, die ersten Gaensekueken sind geschluepft.

And I have to go up to the ranch now, the first goslings are there.
