Vom Viehtrieb zum Branding / From cattle drive to branding

Nach einigen aktiven Tagen (Team Penning, Schiessen, Ropen, Reiten, Devils Tower-Besuch etc.) wurden am Mittwoch unsere Kuehe und Kaelber in drei grossen Trucks aus Montana angeliefert. Mit dabei war auch Flaschenkalb Oreo, die mittlerweile Gesellschaft von Maybelline bekommen hat, einem Kalb, dessen Mutter leider gestorben ist. 

After a few active days (team penning, shooting, roping, riding, visiting Devils Tower etc.) on Wednesday, our cows and calves were delivered from Montana in three big trucks. On the truck was bottle calf Oreo. In the meantime she has been joined by Maybelline, a calf whose mother unfortunately died.

Nachdem wir die Kuehe mit den gerade geborenen Kaelbern aussortiert hatten, trieben wir die Herde auf eine neue Weide, wo wir sie jeden Tag checken, denn noch immer werden neue Kaelber geboren.

After we sorted out the cows with the newborn calves, we moved the herd to a new pasture where we check them every day since there are still calves being born. 

Am Samstag reisten Lisa und Alexander aus Schweden an, ausserdem Christine und Doris aus Oesterreich und Dennis, Randall und Ron aus Missouri. Heute waren wir bereits bei einem Branding, von dem ich im naechsten Blog berichten werde. Und endlich haben wir Lisa (aus Deutschland) wieder hier ... viele Gruesse an Andreas!

On Saturday Lisa and Alexander from Sweden arrived, also Christine and Doris from Austria as well as Dennis, Randall and Ron from Missouri. Today we were at a branding about which I'll write in the next blog. And finally we have Lisa (from Germany) back again ... greetings to Andreas!

Es regnet hin und wieder, so dass wir dieses Jahr wieder Hoffnung auf eine Heuernte haben.

It rains once in a while so that we have hope again to harvest hay this year.

Seit Samstag regnet es ... Nick und ich freuen uns, aber unsere Gaeste sind nicht so begeistert. Doch was ein richtiges Cowgirl ist (oder ein richtiger Cowboy), steigt trotzdem aufs Pferd. Heute sind alle mit Nick und Lance beim Nachbarn, um ihm bei der Rinderarbeit zu helfen. Gestern haben alle Ropen und Schiessen geuebt und waren dann am Devils Tower, in der Ponderosa Bar und bei den Amishen Nachbarn, um Zaum- und Sattelzeug zu kaufen. Und morgen soll schon wieder die Sonne scheinen.

It has been raining since Saturday ... Nick and I are happy, our guests less so. But whoever calls themselves a real cowgirl (or cowboy), mounts up anyway. Today everyone is riding out with Nick and Lance to help the neighbor work his cows. Yesterday they learned how to rope and shoot and then visited Devils Tower, the Ponderosa Bar and the Amish neighbors where they bought leather tack. And tomorrow the sun is supposed to shine again.

Am Wochenende sichteten unsere Truthahnjaeger Bullen auf der Ranch. Der Nachbar vermisste seine. Da aber besagter Nachbar gerade von einer wuetenden Mutterkuh krankenhausreif getrampelt worden war, machten wir uns auf die Suche (siehe oben). Ich ritt Stella, die mich beinahe abgesetzt haette, aber manchmal braucht der Mensch eben auch etwas Glueck. Das Loch im Zaun haben wir gefunden und repariert, aber die Bullen entkamen ... und wurden spaeter wieder von den Jaegern gesichtet.

Last weekend our turkey hunters saw bulls on our ranch. The neighbor missed his. But since this neighbor had just been trampled into the ground by a mad mother cow, we went out to look for his bulls (see above). I rode Stella who almost managed to get rid of me but once in a while I get lucky, too. We found the hole in the fence and repaired it but the bulls got away ... and were later seen by our hunters again.

Sie haben sich im Sommer 2009 in New Haven kennengelernt und treffen sich jedes Jahr mindestens einmal in Deutschland, Nordlichter Lena und Christine und Suedlichter (man koennte auch Norditaliener sagen) Stefan, Dagmar und Sandra. Foto siehe unten.

They met in New Haven in the summer of 2009 and have been visiting each other at least once a year since then: northern lights Lena and Christine and southern lights (one could say North Italians) Stefan, Dagmar and Sandra. See photo below.

Kat ist abgereist: ueber Deutschland nach Westafrika auf die Oelplattform, auf der sie arbeitet. Ende Mai kommt sie wieder. Sie hat natuerlich wieder viele Fotos gemacht, die ich Euch Ende der Woche zeige. Ihr duerft Euch auf Enthuellungen von Tav und Nick freuen ;-)

Kat has left: via Germany to West Africa onto the oil rig where she is working. She is coming back at the end of May. As usual she took many photos which I'll show to you at the end of the week. You may look forward to revelations from Tav and Nick ;-)

Und ich muss jetzt hoch zur Ranch, die ersten Gaensekueken sind geschluepft.

Fernweh / Yearning for Wyoming

Nachdem bereits vor einigen Wochen Jutta, Claudia, Stef, Marion, Toni, Andy, Tine und Antje zu einem New Haven Ranch-Treffen in Westdeutschland zusammen gekommen waren (s. u. auf Tinkern in typisch deutschem Regenwetter), trafen sich Dagmar, Stefan, Christine, Sandra und Lena (s.o.) zu Halloween im Allgaeu und verbrachten den Tag in der Westernstadt Pullman-City - bei fuer Deutschland ueberraschend schoenem Wetter.

After Jutta, Claudia, Stef, Marion, Toni, Andy, Tine and Antje had come together for a new Haven Ranch meeting in Western Germany several weeks ago (s. below on Tinkers in the typical German rainy weather), Dagmar, Stefan, Christine, Sandra and Lena met at Halloween in the Allgaeu (Southern Germany) and spent the day in Pullman-City (fake Western town) - in for Germany surprisingly nice weather.

Apropos Wetter: Hier scheint wieder die Sonne, aber der Schneepflug musste uns trotzdem befreien. Nachdem Bob, der schon seit Jahren bei uns jagt, seinen Hirschbock geschossen hatte, war nun auch Jim erfolgreich: Nachdem er die erste Kugel durch Toms Truck gejagt hatte (*ooops*), traf die zweite den Bock. Und nun koennen sich unsere Jaeger wieder auf den Weg machen ... die naechste Gruppe kommt am Freitag.

As for the weather: The sun is shining again but the snow plow had to free us anyway. After Bob, who has been hunting with us for years, had shot his deer buck, Jim was successful as well: After the first bullet hit Tom's truck (*ooops*), the second one killed a buck. Now our hunters can travel home again. The next group is going to come in on Friday.

Froesche in Wyoming / Frogs in Wyoming

Sandra, das versuchen Frauen schon seit Jahr-hunderten ... und bisher hat es nicht geklappt. Da sind Wyomings Froesche nicht anders als alle anderen. Prinzen gibt es leider nicht ;-)

Sandra, women have been trying this for centuries ... and it has not worked, yet. Wyoming's frogs are no different from any other ones. Princes unfortunately don't exist ;-)

Gestern habe ich unsere Wiederholungstaeter Andreas und seine Tochter Lisa abgeholt, die jetzt erstmal zwei Wochen bleiben. Aber heute gibt es noch ein paar Fotos, die ich Christine und Lena geklaut habe. Die Beiden sind gestern wieder nach Deutschland geflogen. Dagmar, Stefan, durch Eure 1000 Fotos muss ich mich noch durcharbeiten. Drei sind aber auch heute schon dabei.

Yesterday I picked up our repeaters Andreas and his daughter Lisa who will stay for two weeks. But today I will show you some photos I stole from Christine and Lena. The two of them left for Germany yesterday. Dagmar, Stefan, I still have to look at all of your 1000 photos. But three are shown here.

Nick, Gary, Thomas und Jo arbeiten taeglich von morgens um 6 an der Heuscheune. Wir sind schon zwei Wochen zu spaet fuers Heuen. Ich koennte zwar schon anfangen zu maehen, aber erstens muss Nick mit dem Ballenmachen hinterher kommen und zweitens koennen wir noch kein Heu in der Scheune lagern.

Nick, Gary, Thomas and Jo start work on the hay barn at 6 am every day. We are already two weeks late for haying. I could start swathing but first Nick needs to keep up with baling and second we cannot store the hay in the barn, yet.

Dafuer muss ich jetzt Diesteln spruehen ... wir haben ganze Waelder davon. Heute Abend ist aber erstmal die New Haven Sommerparty im gegenueberliegenden Gemeindehaus.

I am spraying thistles ... we have whole woods of them. But this evening there is the New Haven summer party in the community building across the road.

Wie kein anderer Ort auf der Welt / Like no place on earth

Ein schoener letzter Tag in New Haven fuer Christine und Lena: morgens Docking (Branding fuer Schafe, Fotos folgen), bei dem ich aber nicht dabei war, weil ich Unkraut spruehen musste. Dafuer sind wir Drei nachmittags ausgeritten, s. Fotos vor der Kulisse Wyomings. Danach Grillen am See mit Liedern von Brandy und Gedichten von Anthony. Ach ja, ganz unten ein besonders cooler Cowboy (Thomas) auf seinem Feuerross ;-)

A beautiful last day in New Haven for Christine and Lena: a docking (branding for sheep, photos will follow) in the morning (I could not go because I had to spray weeds). In the afternoon the three of us went on a trailride , see photos in front of the gorgeous background of Wyoming. Then BBQ at the lake with songs sung by Brandy and poems recited by Anthony. Oh, and a really cool cowboy (Thomas) on his fire horse ;-)

Neugierige Esel / Curious donkeys

Waehrend Christine, Lena, Susi, Nick, Thomas, Anthony und Jo unseren Nachbarn halfen, ueber 1000 Rinder zusammen-zutreiben und zu entwurmen, mussten Sandra, Dagmar and Stefan leider wieder abreisen. Eigentlich war der Viehtrieb fuer Dienstag geplant gewesen, aber da hatte es vormittags geregnet.

While Christine, Lena, Susi, Nick, Thomas, Anthony and Jo helped our neighbors to gather and worm more than a 1000 head of cattle, Sandra, Dagmar and Stefan unfortunately had to leave. Actually the ride had been planned for Tuesday but it had rained all morning.

Sandra musste schon um 9 Uhr am Flughafen sein, Dagmar und Stefan erst um 16 Uhr. Also bin ich mit letzten Beiden in den Custer State Park suedlich von Rapid City gefahren, wo wir wilde Bueffel- und Eselherden beobachtet haben. Wild? Das muss man dem Esel im obigen Bild noch mal sagen.

Sandra had to be at the airport at 9 am, Dagmar and Stefan at 4 pm. So I took latter ones to Custer State Park south of Rapid City where we saw wild herds of buffalos and donkeys. Wild? Someone has to tell the donkey in the photo.

Heute, Donnerstag, haben Anthony, Christine, Lena und ich unsere Kuehe getrieben. Bei so wenigen Leuten muss jeder ran ... in zwei Stunden hatten wir alle auf eine neue Weide gebracht, bei unserem Gelaende (steile Canyons, viele Baeume) ziemlich schnell.

Today, Thursday, Anthony, Christine, Lena and I moved our cattle. Since we weren't many people, everyone had to work hard ... within two hours we had them all moved. Pretty good for our terrain (steep canyons and lots of trees).

Und heute auf Englisch / And today in English

No blog for four (well, now five) days ... oh dear ... On Friday cattle needed to be moved, our poor guests had to put up an electrical fence before - this is not called a "working cattle ranch" for nothing. In the evening we went swimming in our own lake. On Saturday Anthony and Jo took everyone shopping and visiting Mount Rushmore (the presidents' heads). At the end of the day Nick and I met up with them at the rodeo dance in Belle Fourche. There was lots of sweat, just watching was not tolerated, everyone had to get moving.

Barely back home, we had to get up again: July 4 is the American Independence Day and every year there is a big rodeo in Belle Fourche. I have already written in detail about rodeos (just enter "rodeo" into the search function above left), that's why there won't be any pics or descriptions. It was lots of fun. Afterwards we drove over to Devils Tower, walked around the foot of it and watched the traditional fire works.

Since Sunday, Susanne from Germany is staying with us. On Monday we went riding again, checked cattle, sorted out neighbor's calf, and roped Cisco, the donkey, again.

DEUTSCH: Der Viehtrieb mit den Nachbarn, der fuer Dienstag (heute) geplant war, findet aus Wettergruenden (zu viel Regen) nun erst Mittwoch statt. Schade, denn Mittwoch fahre ich Dagmar, Stefan und Sandra leider schon wieder zum Flughafen. Viel Spass, Christine, Lena und Susi!

The cattle drive with the neighbors which was planned for Tuesday, could not take part because of the weather (too much rain). It'll be tomorrow now. Too bad because I am driving Dagmar, Stefan and Sandra to the airport on Wednesday. Have fun, Christine, Lena and Susi!
