Fernweh / Yearning for Wyoming

Nachdem bereits vor einigen Wochen Jutta, Claudia, Stef, Marion, Toni, Andy, Tine und Antje zu einem New Haven Ranch-Treffen in Westdeutschland zusammen gekommen waren (s. u. auf Tinkern in typisch deutschem Regenwetter), trafen sich Dagmar, Stefan, Christine, Sandra und Lena (s.o.) zu Halloween im Allgaeu und verbrachten den Tag in der Westernstadt Pullman-City - bei fuer Deutschland ueberraschend schoenem Wetter.

After Jutta, Claudia, Stef, Marion, Toni, Andy, Tine and Antje had come together for a new Haven Ranch meeting in Western Germany several weeks ago (s. below on Tinkers in the typical German rainy weather), Dagmar, Stefan, Christine, Sandra and Lena met at Halloween in the Allgaeu (Southern Germany) and spent the day in Pullman-City (fake Western town) - in for Germany surprisingly nice weather.

Apropos Wetter: Hier scheint wieder die Sonne, aber der Schneepflug musste uns trotzdem befreien. Nachdem Bob, der schon seit Jahren bei uns jagt, seinen Hirschbock geschossen hatte, war nun auch Jim erfolgreich: Nachdem er die erste Kugel durch Toms Truck gejagt hatte (*ooops*), traf die zweite den Bock. Und nun koennen sich unsere Jaeger wieder auf den Weg machen ... die naechste Gruppe kommt am Freitag.

As for the weather: The sun is shining again but the snow plow had to free us anyway. After Bob, who has been hunting with us for years, had shot his deer buck, Jim was successful as well: After the first bullet hit Tom's truck (*ooops*), the second one killed a buck. Now our hunters can travel home again. The next group is going to come in on Friday.

Geschichte in Santa Fe / History in Santa Fe

Am Mittwoch besichtigten wir die Ruinen eines alten Indianer-Dorfes am Pecos River. Die Pueblo Indians lebten nicht in Tipis, sondern in Haeusern, so genannten Adobes. Die Ziegel dafuer wurden aus Lehm, Wasser und Stroh geformt und in der Sonne getrocknet. Der Adobe-Baustil ist ideal fuer das Wuestenklima, da die Raeume tagsueber kuehl bleiben, nachts aber laenger Waerme speichern (s.u.).

On Wednesday we visited the ruins of an old Indian village on the Pecos River. The Pueblo Indians did not live in tipis but in houses, so called adobes. The bricks were formed out of clay, water and straw and dried in the sun. The adobe style is ideal for desert climates because the rooms are cool during the day but keep some warmth during the night (see below).

Die Spanier, die als erste Europaeer den nordamerikanischen Kontinent besiedelten, uebernahmen diese Bauweise. Am Nachmittag fuhren wir nach Santa Fe, einer der aeltesten Staedte der USA. Auf dem Foto seht Ihr Nick und Andy vor dem aeltesten Haus der USA (das neben der aeltesten Kirche der USA steht).

The Spanish who were the first Europeans to settle the North American continent imitated the adobe style. In the afternoon we drove to Santa Fe, one of the oldest US cities. Above you can see Nick and Andy in front of the oldest house in the USA (which is next to the oldest church of the USA).

Santa Fe ist auch fuer seine vielen Kuenstler bekannt ... ich musste einfach diese Baerenskulptur fotografieren. Am Donnerstag fuhren wir nach Albuquerque, wo es nachmittags per Flugzeug zurueck nach Rapid City ging. Alles in allem eine sehr interessante Kurzreise mit viel gutem mexikanischen Essen ... nur dass wir alle aufgrund der Hoehenlage oft am Schnaufen waren.

Santa Fe is also famous for its many artists ... I just had to take a photo of this bear sculpture. On Thursday we drove to Albuquerque where we took the plane back to Rapid City in the afternoon. All in all a very interesting short trip with lots of good Mexican food ... only that we all had to catch our breath because of the altitude.

Fast schon Mexiko / Almost Mexico

Am Montag sind Nick und ich auf Bitte von Andys Vater nach New Mexico geflogen. Michael will in der Naehe von Santa Fe zu Investitions-zwecken Land kaufen. Nick soll ihm bei der Auswahl helfen. Oben seht Ihr Andy, Nick, den Makler und Michael (v.l.n.r.) auf einer Anhoehe ueber dem Pecos River.

On Monday Nick and I flew to New Mexico. Andy's father, Michael, had asked Nick to help him evaluate the land he wants to buy for investment purposes near Santa Fe. Above you see Andy, Nick, the realtor and Michael (from left to right) on a mesa above the Pecos River.

Dieser Teil New Mexicos ist eine Halbwueste mit vielen Kakteenarten, Wacholder- und Dornenbueschen - eine voellig andere Landschaft als der Nordosten Wyomings. Unterbrochen haben wir unsere Besichtigungstour mit leckerem mexikanischen Essen - hoffentlich passe ich am Donnerstag noch in den Flugzeugsitz ;-)

This part of New Mexico is a half-desert with many cactus species, juniper and thorn bushes - a totally different landscape from the one in Northeastern Wyoming. We interrupted our tour for rich Mexican food - hopefully I can fit into the plane seat on Thursday ;-)

Alle meine Entchen ... / All my little ducklings ...

Die ersten gaestefreien Tage seit Anfang April ... ich mache Bueroarbeit. Highlight des Tages: neue Entenkueken! Mama sah mich gar nicht gern ;-) Morgen fahre ich schon wieder in die Stadt, um fuenf neue Gaeste abzuholen.

The first days without guests since the beginning of April ... I am doing office work. Highlight of the day: new ducklings! Mum did not like to see me there ;-) Tomorrow I am driving to town to pick up five new guests.

Ausserdem verlaesst Andy uns. Sie wird sich zunaechst mit ihrem Vater in New Mexico treffen, wohin Nick und ich ihr naechste Woche folgen werden (dann auch mehr zum Warum der Reise). Danach geht's noch mal einen Monat zu Pam nach Casper, um Pferde zu reiten. Aber heute Abend feiern wir erstmal Abschied am See mit Lagerfeuer und traurigen Cowboysongs. Fuer Andy kommt Anke, die schon vergangenes Jahr hier war.

And Andy is leaving us. She will meet up with her father in New Mexico where Nick and I will follow her next week (more about why in one of next week's blogs). Then she'll be at Pam's in Casper for another month to ride horses. But tonite we'll say good bye at the lake, grilling above the camp fire and singing sad cowboy songs. Andy will be replaced by Anke who was already here last year.

Ride a horse, feed a cowboy!

Nach dreieinhalb Stunden hatten sie die 30 Kilometer geschafft (s. Blog von gestern). Oben seht Ihr vier muede Pferde: Tucker, Pep, Pal und Pinkerton (v.l.n.r.) mit Wrangler. Unten Hannes, Andy, Heini und Anthony beim Abritt von der Ranch. Der Abend endete mit Essen und Tanz.

It took them three and a half hours to cover the 20 miles to Hulett (s. blog from yesterday). Above you see four tired horses: Tucker, Pep, Pal and Pinkerton (from left to right) with wrangler. Below Hannes, Andy, Heini and Anthony at the departure from the ranch. The evening ended with food and dancing.

Am Samstag mussten sich dann auch Hannes und Heini schweren Herzens von New Haven trennen. Ich fuhr sie zum Flughafen, wo sie einen Mietwagen abholten, um noch eine weitere Woche die Gegend zu erkunden ... und noch mehr Westernkleidung zu kaufen :-) Abends wollten sie schon wieder in Hulett sein, um bei einem Country-Konzert dabei zu sein.

On Saturday Hannes and Heini had to leave as well, not very happily. I brought them to the airport where the picked up a rental to discover the Black Hills for another week ... and to shop even more Western clothing :-) In the evening they wanted to be back in Hulett for a country concert.

Ritt in den Sonnenuntergang / Ride into the sunset

Da ich heute am Schreibtisch sitze (der Boden ist zu feucht zum Maehen) und das Leben an mir voruebergeht, gibt es heute ein Bild von Andreas. Lisa, Andy, Thomas und Brandy reiten ohne Sattel in den Sonnenuntergang. Ja, klingt kitschig, ist aber trotzdem schoen.

Since I am sitting at the desk today (the ground is too wet to swath) and life passes by me, you are seeing a picture by Andreas. Lisa, Andy, Thomas and Brandy are riding bareback into the sunset. Yes, sounds kitschy but is beautiful nevertheless.

I have to do accounting now (which really isn't my strength at all).

Pioniere / Pioneers

Was fuer ein Wochenende! Freitag morgen sind Kathleen, Cristin, Caroline, Andy und ich durch tiefe Canyons und auf Plateaus geritten und kamen uns dabei wie Pioniere vor (oben Jazz' Ohren, dann die "Maedels", danach ich auf Jazz mit Gauge). Nachmittags ging es zum Rodeo "Days of 76" im historischen Deadwood (Foto) mit anschliessendem Tanz.

What a weekend! Friday morning Kathleen, Cristin, Caroline, Andy and I rode through deep canyons and onto plateaus and felt like pioneers (above Jazz' ears, then the "girls", after that I on Jazz with Gauge). In the afternoon we drove to the rodeo "Days of 76" in historic Deadwood (photo). And danced afterwards.

Samstag, nach wenigen Stunden Schlaf, hiess es aufstehen und auf zum Ranchrodeo nach Sundance. Ein Ranchrodeo ist kein traditionelles Rodeo, sondern es treffen Teams unterschiedlicher Ranches zusammen, die sich bei Geschicklichkeitsaufgaben messen, die an die taegliche Arbeit eines Cowboys angelehnt sind (Foto). Unsere Nachbarn waren auch dabei. Ziemlich spannend!

On Saturday, after a few hours of sleep we got ready again, this time for a rand rodeo in Sundance. A ranch rodeo ist not a traditional rodeo. Teams of various ranches compete in different tasks which are derived from a cowboy's typical work day (photo). Our neighbors participated as well. Pretty exciting!

Abends kamen Andreas und Michaela aus Deutschland an. Und ich freue mich auf mein Bett.

In the evening our new German guests, Andreas and Michaela arrived. And I am looking forward to my bed.

Hitze / Heat

Heute sind mal wieder alle in Sued-Dakota bei Brandon. Ihm sind einige Rinder abhanden gekommen, die gesucht werden muessen. Nick und ich halten die Stellung auf der Ranch. Es ist heiss ...

Today everyone is in South Dakota again helping Brandon. He lost some cattle that have to be found again. Nick and I are keeping the ranch going. It is hot ...

Gestern sind einige unserer Rinder auf Nachbars Koppel gewesen. Andy (s. oben auf Patch), Kathleen (auf Juno) und ich (auf meiner Jazz) haben sie zurueckgeholt ... waehrend des Treibens habe ich natuerlich vergessen, ein Foto zu machen. Brandy und Emmett (auf Viento und Jet) waren auch unterwegs. Und das andere Foto (insbesondere wenn man zur Vergroesserung drauf klickt) zeigt, dass auch Heuballen romantisch aussehen koennen ;-)

Yesterday some of our cattle was on the neighbor's pasture. Andy (s. above on Patch), Kathleen (on Juno) and I (on my Jazz) brought them back ... while moving them I forgot to take pictures, of course. Brandy and Emmett (on Viento and Jet) were on the go, too. And the other photo (especially if you click to enlarge it) shows that even hay bales can be romantic ;-)

Muss jetzt das Abendessen kochen.

Abreisen, wenn's am schoensten ist / Leaving when it couldn't get better

Heute sind leider Meisterfotograf Andy (s. Foto unten) und seine Tochter Lisa (mit Thomas und Emmett auf dem Motorrad und mit Kathleen und Emmett auf dem Boot) sowie "Stormin' Norman" (Foto mit Gauge) abgereist. Zum Glueck haben alle angedroht, naechstes Jahr wiederzukommen.

Today master photographer Andy (s. photo below) and his daughter Lisa (with Thomas and Emmett on the motorcycle and with Kathleen and Emmett on the boat) unfortunately left. As did "Stormin' Norman" (photo with Gauge). Luckily all threatened to come back next year.

Jo wollte sich gestern die Haare schneiden lassen, aber nicht von Thomas mit dem Messer, sondern von Brandy mit der Schere (meiner Meinung nach kaum weniger riskant ;-) Ueberhaupt: Thomas und die Frauen, s. Foto oben mit Andy und Brandy am See.

Jo wanted to get her hair cut yesterday but not by Thomas with a knife but by Brandy with scissors (in my opinion not less risky ;-) Really: Thomas and women, s. photo above with Andy and Brandy at the lake.

Aber es gibt auch welche, die arbeiten: Nick hat den ganzen Tag Ballen gepresst, s. Foto. Und heute hat er den ganzen Tag Ballen in die neue Scheune gefahren.

But there are also some who work: Nick baled the whole day, s. photo. And today he drove bales into the new barn.

Murphys Gesetz / Murphy's law

Gestern morgen hat Thomas Heu gewendet, und ich konnte mit auf den Viehtrieb. Oben seht Ihr Jo auf Pal, unten Andy und Lisa. Foto von Norm folgt. Es war heiss, und die Rinder wollten nur unter den Baeumen liegen und sich nicht bewegen, aber wir haben es dann doch noch geschafft.

Yesterday morning Thomas raked hay and I could go on the cattle drive. Above you see Jo on Pal, below Andy and Lisa. A photo of Norm will follow. It was hot and the cattle just wanted to lay under trees and not move but we got it done.

Was das Heuen angeht: Am Sonntag hatte ich wieder einen Platten - diesmal war es ein Nagel. Dann zogen mehrere heftige Gewitter durch, das Heu am Boden flog in alle Himmelsrichtigen, die fertigen Ballen wurden durchnaesst, und wir konnten die ganze Nacht ueber nicht arbeiten. Gestern kam es noch schlimmer: Erst verliert Nick 40 Liter Hydraulikoel, weil eine Leitung unter der Ballenpresse leck war, dann verbiegt der Akkumulator, der jeweils zehn Ballen sammelt, bevor diese auf den Boden geworfen werden, und dann ist ploetzlich ein Leck im grossen Traktorreifen. Da Traktorenreifen ausser mit Luft auch mit Wasser gefuellt sind (damit der Reifen schwerer wird), kann Nick das nicht selbst reparieren, sondern muss heute auf den Mechaniker warten. Naja, ich werde allerdings den ganzen Tag maehen.

About the haying: On Sunday I had a flat tire again - this time it was a nail. Then several strong thunderstorms came through. The cut hay flew away, the finished bales were soaked and we could not work all night. Yesterday was worse: First Nick loses 10 gallons of hydraulic oil due to a leak underneath the baler, then the accumulator bends (which collects ten bales before they hit the ground), and then the big tractor tire gets punctured. Since tractor tires are not just filled with air but with water as well for weight, Nick cannot repair it himself but has to wait for the mechanic to come out. Well, I will swath all day.

Bilder vom Wochenende folgen - habe mir noch keine von unseren Gaesten besorgt. Lisa hat sich gestern bei Wayce Chinks gekauft und ist ganz begeistert. Norm will sich heute noch ein Pistolenhalfter machen lassen.

Pictures of the weekend will follow - haven't got any from the guests, yet. Lisa bought a pair of Chinks from Wayce and is excited, Norm wants to have him make a pistol halster.

Die Heusaison hat begonnen - endlich / The haying season has begun - finally

Waehrend Lisa und Andy fleissig reiten, Kuehe und Pferde (s. Foto) treiben, Nachbars ausgebrochene Rinder aus unserer Herde heraussortieren, Zaeune bauen (s. Foto), schiessen und ropen lernen und am See relaxen, sitze ich seit zwei Tagen auf meinem Traktor.

While Lisa and Andy ride a lot, move cattle and horses (s. photo), sort the neighbor's heifers out of our herd, build fence (s. photo), lern how to shoot and rope and relax at the lake, I have been sitting on my tractor for the last two days.

Habe den kleinen ATV und den Unkrautspraytank gegen den Ford mit Maeher getauscht. Am Ende des ersten Tages war ein Reifen platt. Anthony und Jo haben noch schnell Ersatzteile aus Hulett geholt. Und was passiert heute am Ende des Tages? Der ganze Reifen mit Felge springt ab (s. Foto): Nick hatte vergessen, die Schrauben fest zu ziehen, als er den neuen Reifen aufgezogen hatte. Nun waren die Schrauben weg, und die letzte Schraube hat ein Loch in die Felge gerissen. Tja, auch das hat Nick repariert.

Switched the small ATV and the weed spraying tank for the Ford with the swather. At the end of the first day one tire was flat. Anthony and Jo drove to Hulett to pick up the parts. And what happened at the end of this day? The whole tire and rim flew off (s. photo): Nick had forgotten to tighten the bolts when he put the new tire on. Now the bolts were gone and the last bolt had ripped a whole into the rim. Well, Nick repaired this as well.

Heute Nacht muessen wir wenden (ich) und Ballen pressen (Nick) ... muss zusehen, dass ich noch zwei Stunden Schlaf bekomme.

Tonight we have to rake (I) and bale (Nick) ... have to hurry to get two hours of sleep in.

Ach ja, Norm, ein neuer Gast, ist aus der Chicago-Gegend angereist. Und ja, auch Andy ist wieder gut aus Deutschland zurueckgekehrt. Morgen fahren alle zum Rodeo (mit Indianerrennen) und Polo-Turnier nach Sheridan ... ausser Nick und mir ... aufgrund der relativen Trockenheit haben wir nur einen Heuschnitt pro Jahr, und der muss klappen. Fuer die naechsten vier bis sechs Wochen werden wir gut beschaeftigt sein.

By the way, Norm, our new guest from the Chicago area has arrived. And yes, Andy has returned from German as well. Tomorrow everyone will go to the rodeo (with Indian relay races) and the polo match in Sheridan ... except Nick and I ... due to the relative aridity we only have one hay cut per year and that one has to work out well. We'll be pretty busy for the next four to six weeks.

Das letzte Branding ... / The last branding ...

... der Saison. Und es war wie immer ein Erlebnis! Barbara, Katha ... es tut mir so Leid, dass Ihr nicht mehr dabei gewesen seid. Nick meinte, Ihr haettet Euren Flug umbuchen sollen. Wer will schon in Chicago shoppen gehen, wenn er/sie stattdessen strampelnde Kaelber im Schlamm Wyomings wresteln kann???

... of the season. And it was a blast ... as usual! Barbara, Katha ... I am so sorry you weren't here. Nick thought you should have changed your flight. Who wants to go shopping in Chicago when he/she can wrestle unruly calves in the mud of Wyoming instead???

Alle waren dabei: Nick, Anthony, Jo, Andy, Thomas, Brandy, Emmett, sogar Gary und natuerlich unseren neuen Gaeste: Dagmar und Stefan aus Bayern. Zunaechst ein entspannter Ritt mit allen Nachbarn, um die ca. 130 Kuehe mit ihren Kaelbern hereinzutreiben. Dann ging es zur Sache, s. Fotos. Und nach getaner Arbeit haben wir alle in Cori und Earls schoenem Garten gepicknickt ... mit frisch gegrillten Hamburgern und leckeren Pies.

All came: Nick, Anthony, Jo, Andy, Thomas, Brandy, Emmett, even Gary and of course our new guests: Dagmar and Stefan from Bavaria. First a relaxing ride with all the neighbors to gather 130 cows with their calves. Then the work started, see photos. Afterwards we had a picknick in Cori's and Earl's beautiful garden ... with hamburgers from the grill and delicious pies.

Auch wenn auf dem Rueckweg ein Trailerreifen platzte, der Ersatzreifen aber nicht auf der Felge war (Nick, Du bist doch sonst so gut organisiert!) und wir noch zu einem Nachbarn fahren mussten (zum Glueck waren wir in zwei Trucks unterwegs), um dessen Reifenmaschine zu benutzen, war es ein toller Tag ... Hitze inklusive, liebe Tine ;-)

Even though on the way back a trailer tire blew up, the spare was not on the rim, yet (Nick, you are usually so well organized!) and we had to drive to a neighbor (luckily we were going in two trucks) to use his tire machine, it was a great day ... heat included, dear Tine ;-)

Vom Winde verweht / Gone with the wind

Nein, wir sind nicht immer nur am Reiten, aber ein Grossteil unserer Arbeit ist - wie bei anderen Leuten auch - nicht unbedingt ein Foto wert.

No, we don't ride all the time but a large part of our work - the same as with most work - is not necessarily worth a photo.

Es war unglaublich stuermisch heute ... eine gute Gelegenheit, um Pferde zu trainieren. Wer bei diesem Wetter cool bleibt, den kann nicht mehr allzu viel erschuettern.

It was extremely stormy today ... a good opportunity to train horses. Any one that stays cool in this weather, will stay cool in general.

Pinkerton (hier mit Andy, rechts) war der Ruhigste, Bailey (mit Anthony, links) wollte - wahrscheinlich wetterunabhaengig - Gas geben. KC, den ich ritt, war etwas nervoes, aber alles in allem war es ein herrlicher Ritt ... obwohl wir alle unsere Huete so tief in die Stirn ziehen mussten, damit wir sie nicht verlieren, dass wir kaum etwas sehen konnten.

Pinkerton (here with Andy, right) was the calmest, Bailey (with Anthony, left) wanted to run - probably weather unrelated. I rode KC who was a little nervous but altogether it was a fun ride ... even though due to the wind we had to pull our hats so tight that we could not see that much anymore.

Spieleabend / Game night

Nach einem langen Arbeitstag waren wir heute abend alle draussen zum Trocken-Ropen, Wresteln und Spielen.
After a long work day we were outside tonight to practice roping, wrestle and play.

Gute und weniger gute Tage / Good and less than good days

An Themen fuers Blog mangelt es mir nicht, aber an Zeit. Heute z.B. - Stefan, schoenen Gruss - bin ich ab sechs Uhr morgens sechs Stunden lang mit dem 4-Wheeler als lebendiger Marker vor Nick (in seinem Truck) hergefahren.

I don't lack topics to blog about, I lack time. Today i.e. - Stefan, listen - I drove in front of Nick (in his truck) on the 4-wheeler as a living marker - from 6 o'clock on for six hours .

Bevor die Saat ausgebracht werden kann, muessen einige der Felder mit Unkrautvernichtungsmittel eingesprueht werden. Nick laedt dazu einen grossen Tank mit Pumpe auf einen der Pick-ups. Daran sind lange Metallarme mit Duesen angeschlossen, aus denen die Fluessigkeit auf die Pflanzen gesprueht wird (s. Foto unten). Ganz am Ende der beiden Arme wird Farbe ausgesprueht, so dass Nick immer weiss, wo er schon gewesen ist ... theoretisch.

Before drilling some of the fields need to be sprayed to kill the weeds. Nick loads a tank and a pump onto his pick-up. A boom (s. photo below) is attached to the tank which distributes the weed spray via jets onto the plants. At both ends of the boom foam marker is sprayed onto the ground. Thus, Nick always knows where he has already been ... theoretically.

In der Realitaet ist die Farbe schwer zu sehen und fliesst auch nicht kontinuierlich, so dass Nick lieber jemanden auf dem Quad vorfahren laesst, der die dankbare Aufgabe hat, die Farbklekse zu finden ... ohne dabei langsamer zu werden oder sich zu verirren. Nach sechs Stunden begann es zu regnen, was uns nicht nur davon abhielt, den Rest der Felder zu spruehen, sondern auch die Arbeit der letzten drei Stunden zunichte machte ... das Vernichtungsmittel (uebrigens unschaedlich fuer Menschen, Tiere und die spaeter ausgebrachte Saat) braucht einige Zeit, um zu wirken.

In reality the paint is barely visible and not evenly distributed so that Nick prefers to have someone ride the ATV in front of him. This person has the wonderful job of finding the marker ... without slowing down or getting lost. After six hours it started to rain which did not just keep us from finishing the other fields but destroyed the last three hours of our work ... the weed spray (which does not harm humans, animals or the seed) needs some time to soak in.

Gestern haben Andy und ich es aber geschafft, auf einen Ausritt zu gehen. Meine Stella benahm sich auch nach einige sattellosen Monaten recht gut, und Andy war von Pinkerton, unserem neuen Schimmel, begeistert (s. Foto oben). Wir haben mehrere Male einen kleinen Fluss ueberquert und dabei unsere Pferde trainiert. Und das duerfen wir dann auch Arbeit nennen ;-)

Yesterday Andy and I managed to go on a trail ride. My Stella behaved pretty well after several months without being ridden, and Andy was thrilled by Pinkerton, our new gray (s. photo above). We had to cross a little creek several times which was good training for our horses. And we are allowed to call that work as well :-)
