Es waren einmal vier junge huebsche intelligente erfolgreiche Frauen aus Deutschland und der Schweiz. Sie hatten das perfekte Leben ... bis sie Ranchurlaub in Wyoming machten. Jetzt traeumen sie nur noch von Cowboys, Rindern ... und Traktoren. Und wenn sie Weihnachtskekse backen, sehen die komischerweise wie das Wyoming Bucking Horse aus. Oh je ... Mein Tipp: Maedels, meldet Euch bei "Bauer sucht Frau"! Leider gibt es diese Sendung noch nicht in den USA (soweit ich weiss, da wir keinen Fernsehempfang haben).

Once upon a time there were four young pretty intelligent successful women from Germany and Switzerland. They had a perfect life ... till they went on a ranch vacation in Wyoming. Now they only dream of cowboys, cattle ... and tractors. And when they bake Christmas cookies, latter ones look like the Wyoming bucking horse. Oh dear ... My advice: Girls, apply for (the German TV show) "Rancher looking for wife"! Unfortunately, they don't have this show in the US, yet (as far as I know since we don't have TV reception).

Am Donnerstag sind wir zum Rodeo nach Sheridan gefahren. Eine Besonderheit dort sind die wilden indianischen Staffelrennen, bei denen Crow, Cheyenne, Blackfoot und andere Staemme teilnehmen. Tine haette vor Aufregung beinahe einen Herzinfarkt bekommen. Die beruehmte King Saddlery haben wir uns auch angeschaut.

On Thursday we drove to the rodeo in Sheridan. A speciality there are the wild Indian relay races in which Crow, Cheyenne, Blackfoot and other tribes participate. Tine was so excited, she almost had a heart attack. We also visited the famous King Saddlery.

Nachdem ich im vergangenen Jahr viel auf dem Traktor sass, musste ich dieses Jahr noch nicht oft ran. Nick und Barbara kuemmern sich ums Heuen, und Lisa gehoert zum Back-up-Team. Sie hat schon gelernt, den Traktor zu fahren und den Wender zu bedienen. Die ersten 10.000 Ballen sind in der Scheune, die damit (und etwa 2.000 alten Ballen von 2010) voll ist. Jetzt stapelt Nick die Ballen draussen unter Planen.

After I had to run the tractor a lot last year, this year I haven't done much haying, yet. Nick and Barbara do most of it and Lisa is part of the back-up team. She already learned how to drive the tractor and use the rake. The first 10,000 bales are in the barn which (together with 2,000 bales from 2010) is full. Nick is now storing the bales outside under tarps.

Wir werden unsere neue Stute Belle nennen, Tinkerbelle klingt zu sehr nach Fee, aber das Pferd ist ziemlich stabil gebaut. Eines der Schafe hat Drillinge bekommen. Und Ziegenbabies haben wir auch wieder. Alle Pferde sind fit ausser Jazz, die sich bei einem Ritt verletzt hat, aber in ein paar Wochen sicher wieder fit sein wird.

The new mare is now Belle, Tinkerbelle sounds too much like a fairy and the horse is rather stout. One of the ewes had triplets. And we have goat kids again, too. All horses are fit but Jazz who hurt herself during a ride but will be fine again in a few weeks.

Nach Sabine und Sarah sind auch Baerbel, Rahel und Alexandra abgereist und am Samstag Brigit, Nico, Bianca, Annett und - schluchz - Tine und Antje. Nur Lisa haelt die Stellung. Neu dabei sind Urs aus der Schweiz, Georg und Ruth aus Deutschland, Danielle aus Florida und Roxane, Samantha und Abigail aus Sued-Afrika.

After Sabine and Sarah, Baerbel, Rahel and Alexandra left and on Saturday Brigit, Nico, Bianca, Annett and *cry* Tine and Antje. Just Lisa is still here. New are Urs from Switzerland, Georg and Ruth from Germany, Danielle from Florida, and Roxane, Samantha and Abigail from South Africa.

Barbara arbeitet gerade mit Vegas (der aufgrund von chronischer Hufrehe lange nicht geritten werden konnte), Smokey und Gordo. Linda hat es in der Zwischenzeit auf Babies abgesehen, jedes Kleinkind, das hier auftaucht, wird in Beschlag genommen (da aehnelt sie Nicks Mutter JoAnn). Taben, die Tochter des Hufschmieds, wollte sogar gleich hier bleiben (s. Foto).

Barbara is working with Vegas (who could not be ridden for a long time due to his chronically foundered left front hoof), Smokey and Gordo. Linda rather gets a hold of babies. She catches every little child that shows up here (in that way she is just like Nick's mom, JoAnn). Taben, the farrier's daughter, did not want to leave anymore (s. photo).

Bei 40 Grad wird das Leben etwas muehsam (Tav und Tine koennen sich nicht mehr ueber die Kaelte beschweren), aber irgendwann muss es ja wieder abkuehlen. Drueckt die Daumen fuer uns!

Life gets tough at close to 100 degrees Fahrenheit (40 Celsius) (Tav and Tine cannot complain about the cold weather anymore) but hopefully it will cool down soon. Cross your fingers for us!

Gestern morgen hat Thomas Heu gewendet, und ich konnte mit auf den Viehtrieb. Oben seht Ihr Jo auf Pal, unten Andy und Lisa. Foto von Norm folgt. Es war heiss, und die Rinder wollten nur unter den Baeumen liegen und sich nicht bewegen, aber wir haben es dann doch noch geschafft.

Yesterday morning Thomas raked hay and I could go on the cattle drive. Above you see Jo on Pal, below Andy and Lisa. A photo of Norm will follow. It was hot and the cattle just wanted to lay under trees and not move but we got it done.

Was das Heuen angeht: Am Sonntag hatte ich wieder einen Platten - diesmal war es ein Nagel. Dann zogen mehrere heftige Gewitter durch, das Heu am Boden flog in alle Himmelsrichtigen, die fertigen Ballen wurden durchnaesst, und wir konnten die ganze Nacht ueber nicht arbeiten. Gestern kam es noch schlimmer: Erst verliert Nick 40 Liter Hydraulikoel, weil eine Leitung unter der Ballenpresse leck war, dann verbiegt der Akkumulator, der jeweils zehn Ballen sammelt, bevor diese auf den Boden geworfen werden, und dann ist ploetzlich ein Leck im grossen Traktorreifen. Da Traktorenreifen ausser mit Luft auch mit Wasser gefuellt sind (damit der Reifen schwerer wird), kann Nick das nicht selbst reparieren, sondern muss heute auf den Mechaniker warten. Naja, ich werde allerdings den ganzen Tag maehen.

About the haying: On Sunday I had a flat tire again - this time it was a nail. Then several strong thunderstorms came through. The cut hay flew away, the finished bales were soaked and we could not work all night. Yesterday was worse: First Nick loses 10 gallons of hydraulic oil due to a leak underneath the baler, then the accumulator bends (which collects ten bales before they hit the ground), and then the big tractor tire gets punctured. Since tractor tires are not just filled with air but with water as well for weight, Nick cannot repair it himself but has to wait for the mechanic to come out. Well, I will swath all day.

Bilder vom Wochenende folgen - habe mir noch keine von unseren Gaesten besorgt. Lisa hat sich gestern bei Wayce Chinks gekauft und ist ganz begeistert. Norm will sich heute noch ein Pistolenhalfter machen lassen.

Pictures of the weekend will follow - haven't got any from the guests, yet. Lisa bought a pair of Chinks from Wayce and is excited, Norm wants to have him make a pistol halster.

Die Heusaison hat begonnen - endlich / The haying season has begun - finally

Waehrend Lisa und Andy fleissig reiten, Kuehe und Pferde (s. Foto) treiben, Nachbars ausgebrochene Rinder aus unserer Herde heraussortieren, Zaeune bauen (s. Foto), schiessen und ropen lernen und am See relaxen, sitze ich seit zwei Tagen auf meinem Traktor.

While Lisa and Andy ride a lot, move cattle and horses (s. photo), sort the neighbor's heifers out of our herd, build fence (s. photo), lern how to shoot and rope and relax at the lake, I have been sitting on my tractor for the last two days.

Habe den kleinen ATV und den Unkrautspraytank gegen den Ford mit Maeher getauscht. Am Ende des ersten Tages war ein Reifen platt. Anthony und Jo haben noch schnell Ersatzteile aus Hulett geholt. Und was passiert heute am Ende des Tages? Der ganze Reifen mit Felge springt ab (s. Foto): Nick hatte vergessen, die Schrauben fest zu ziehen, als er den neuen Reifen aufgezogen hatte. Nun waren die Schrauben weg, und die letzte Schraube hat ein Loch in die Felge gerissen. Tja, auch das hat Nick repariert.

Switched the small ATV and the weed spraying tank for the Ford with the swather. At the end of the first day one tire was flat. Anthony and Jo drove to Hulett to pick up the parts. And what happened at the end of this day? The whole tire and rim flew off (s. photo): Nick had forgotten to tighten the bolts when he put the new tire on. Now the bolts were gone and the last bolt had ripped a whole into the rim. Well, Nick repaired this as well.

Heute Nacht muessen wir wenden (ich) und Ballen pressen (Nick) ... muss zusehen, dass ich noch zwei Stunden Schlaf bekomme.

Tonight we have to rake (I) and bale (Nick) ... have to hurry to get two hours of sleep in.

Ach ja, Norm, ein neuer Gast, ist aus der Chicago-Gegend angereist. Und ja, auch Andy ist wieder gut aus Deutschland zurueckgekehrt. Morgen fahren alle zum Rodeo (mit Indianerrennen) und Polo-Turnier nach Sheridan ... ausser Nick und mir ... aufgrund der relativen Trockenheit haben wir nur einen Heuschnitt pro Jahr, und der muss klappen. Fuer die naechsten vier bis sechs Wochen werden wir gut beschaeftigt sein.

By the way, Norm, our new guest from the Chicago area has arrived. And yes, Andy has returned from German as well. Tomorrow everyone will go to the rodeo (with Indian relay races) and the polo match in Sheridan ... except Nick and I ... due to the relative aridity we only have one hay cut per year and that one has to work out well. We'll be pretty busy for the next four to six weeks.

Kleine rechteckige bitte / Small squares, please

Kaum wird das Wetter besser, faengt das Telefon an zu klingeln. Den Leuten faellt ein, dass sie vielleicht doch noch mehr Heu brauchen, bevor uns die naechste Kaeltewelle ueberrollt.

As soon as the weather improves, the phone starts ringing. People remember that they should maybe buy more hay before the next cold wave strikes.

Wir haben 2009 etwa 10.000 Ballen Luzerne/Grass-Heu produziert, 1.000 Ballen Haferheu und 500 Ballen Weizenheu. Leider hatten wir nur genuegend Regen fuer einen Schnitt. In Deutschland bekommt man immer mehrere Schnitte. Und da wir im Winter keine grosse Rinderherde halten, brauchen wir keine grossen Rundballen, sondern koennen die meisten unserer kleinen rechteckigen Ballen an Pferdebesitzer verkaufen. Kleine Ballen machen zwar mehr Arbeit, bringen aber auch mehr Geld. Und die meisten Privatleute haben nicht das Equipment fuer grosse Ballen, die fast eine Tonne wiegen.

In 2009, we produced about 10,000 bales of alfalfa/grass hay, 1,000 oat hay bales and 500 wheat hay bales. Due to lack of rain we could only cut once. In many parts of the USA and Europe you get several cuts a summer. Since we don't keep big amounts of cattle in the winter, we don't need to make big round bales but can sell the small square bales to horse owners. Small squares are more labor intensive but we can also ask more money for them. And most people if they aren't ranchers don't have the eqipment for the big bales which weigh close to a ton.

Hier seht Ihr Nick im John Deere-Traktor, der mit einem besonderen Aufsatz jeweils 10 Ballen gleichzeitig greifen und laden kann. Die Ballen sind unter grossen Planen. Und weil die schwierig zu handhaben sind, will Nick bald seine neue Heuscheune bauen.

Here you can see Nick in his John Deere tractor. A special loader can grip 10 bales simultaneously. The bales are under huge tarps. And because they are difficult to handle, Nick is planning on building his new hay barn soon.

Die Ruhe nach dem Sturm / The quiet after the storm

Und heute morgen strahlte wieder die Sonne ... Waehrend Nick den ganzen Tag im Traktor mit Schneeraeumen verbracht hat (s. unten mit Fotografin und Pferd als Nachmittags-Schatten), haben Brandy und ich Pferde trainiert ... naja, unter anderem. Brandy fuhr mit Homer (auf ihrem Schoss), Gauge und Kaltblut Leftie Schlitten. Und unten noch ein Blick auf von der Abendsonne beleuchtete Pinien. Muede ... war den ganzen Tag an der frischen Luft.

And this morning the sun was out again ... While Nick spend the whole day in the tractor moving snow (s. below with the photographer and her horse as shadows), Brandy and I trained horses ... well, part of the day. Brandy rode the sled with Homer on her lap and Gauge and drafthorse Leftie in front. And below a view of pine trees in the evening sun. Tired ... was out all day in the fresh air.

Schneesturm in New Haven / Blizzard in New Haven

Ich brauchte heute 20 Minuten, um mich durch den tiefen Schnee zur Lodge zu kaempfen. Die Pferde warteten auch schon ungeduldig: "Wo ist unser Fruehstueck?" Aber immerhin war ich irgendwann da. Anders als Brandon, der seine Ziegen am Devils Tower fuettern wollte und trotz Schneeketten und Vierradantrieb gleich an der naechsten Kurve in einer Schneewehe stecken blieb.

I needed 20 minutes today to get through the deep snow up to the lodge. The horses waited impatiently: "Where is our breakfast?" But at least I did arrive. Other than Brandon who wanted to feed his goats at Devils Tower and got stuck right at the next turn in a snow drift - despite chains and 4-wheel drive.

Nick musste ihn sowie einen Nachbarn mit dem Traktor aus dem Schnee ziehen. Nur um dann selbst am Teich stecken zu bleiben, als er einen Pfad fuer die hiesigen Ziegen freischaufeln wollte. Gut, dass Brandon noch da war, denn der hat ihn dann gleich mit unserem zweiten Traktor wieder herausgezogen.

Nick had to pull him and a neighbor with his tractor out of the snow. Only to get stuck himself at the pond when he was digging a path for the goats on the ranch. Good that Brandon was still there because he pulled Nick out with our second tractor.

Tina ritt auf Jet raus, um die grosse Herde zu holen. Die Kuehe und Bueffel waren allein zur Ranch gekommen, sie muessen ueber den Zaun gesprungen sein. Die Pferde warteten schon auf Tina und liefen dann hinter ihr her zur Ranch, wo Brandon und ich Heu verteilt hatten. Die Schafe schlossen sich dem Trek gleich an, denn Schafe laufen immer dorthin, wo alle hinlaufen.

Tina rode out on Jet to get the big herd. The cows and buffalos had already come to the ranch on their own, they must have jumped the fence. The horses already waited for Tina and followed her back to the ranch where Brandon and I had put out hay for them. The sheep joined the big trek because sheep always follow everyone else.

So ein bisschen Schnee kann einen ganz gut in Atem halten. Brandy passte derweil die Kinder, die wir sonst in irgendeiner Schneewehe verloren haetten. Sie fragte mich, ob ich lieber babysitten wolle oder in der Kaelte arbeiten. Meine Antwort kam schnell: "Babysitten ist richtige Arbeit, alles andere ist Spass!"

It's amazing how a little bit of snow can keep you busy all day. Brandy took care of the kids who we would have lost in some snow drift. She asked me if I'd rather babysit or work in the cold. My answer was quick: "Babysitting is real work, everything else is fun!"
