Am Donnerstag sind wir zum Rodeo nach Sheridan gefahren. Eine Besonderheit dort sind die wilden indianischen Staffelrennen, bei denen Crow, Cheyenne, Blackfoot und andere Staemme teilnehmen. Tine haette vor Aufregung beinahe einen Herzinfarkt bekommen. Die beruehmte King Saddlery haben wir uns auch angeschaut.

On Thursday we drove to the rodeo in Sheridan. A speciality there are the wild Indian relay races in which Crow, Cheyenne, Blackfoot and other tribes participate. Tine was so excited, she almost had a heart attack. We also visited the famous King Saddlery.

Nachdem ich im vergangenen Jahr viel auf dem Traktor sass, musste ich dieses Jahr noch nicht oft ran. Nick und Barbara kuemmern sich ums Heuen, und Lisa gehoert zum Back-up-Team. Sie hat schon gelernt, den Traktor zu fahren und den Wender zu bedienen. Die ersten 10.000 Ballen sind in der Scheune, die damit (und etwa 2.000 alten Ballen von 2010) voll ist. Jetzt stapelt Nick die Ballen draussen unter Planen.

After I had to run the tractor a lot last year, this year I haven't done much haying, yet. Nick and Barbara do most of it and Lisa is part of the back-up team. She already learned how to drive the tractor and use the rake. The first 10,000 bales are in the barn which (together with 2,000 bales from 2010) is full. Nick is now storing the bales outside under tarps.

Wir werden unsere neue Stute Belle nennen, Tinkerbelle klingt zu sehr nach Fee, aber das Pferd ist ziemlich stabil gebaut. Eines der Schafe hat Drillinge bekommen. Und Ziegenbabies haben wir auch wieder. Alle Pferde sind fit ausser Jazz, die sich bei einem Ritt verletzt hat, aber in ein paar Wochen sicher wieder fit sein wird.

The new mare is now Belle, Tinkerbelle sounds too much like a fairy and the horse is rather stout. One of the ewes had triplets. And we have goat kids again, too. All horses are fit but Jazz who hurt herself during a ride but will be fine again in a few weeks.

Nach Sabine und Sarah sind auch Baerbel, Rahel und Alexandra abgereist und am Samstag Brigit, Nico, Bianca, Annett und - schluchz - Tine und Antje. Nur Lisa haelt die Stellung. Neu dabei sind Urs aus der Schweiz, Georg und Ruth aus Deutschland, Danielle aus Florida und Roxane, Samantha und Abigail aus Sued-Afrika.

After Sabine and Sarah, Baerbel, Rahel and Alexandra left and on Saturday Brigit, Nico, Bianca, Annett and *cry* Tine and Antje. Just Lisa is still here. New are Urs from Switzerland, Georg and Ruth from Germany, Danielle from Florida, and Roxane, Samantha and Abigail from South Africa.

Barbara arbeitet gerade mit Vegas (der aufgrund von chronischer Hufrehe lange nicht geritten werden konnte), Smokey und Gordo. Linda hat es in der Zwischenzeit auf Babies abgesehen, jedes Kleinkind, das hier auftaucht, wird in Beschlag genommen (da aehnelt sie Nicks Mutter JoAnn). Taben, die Tochter des Hufschmieds, wollte sogar gleich hier bleiben (s. Foto).

Barbara is working with Vegas (who could not be ridden for a long time due to his chronically foundered left front hoof), Smokey and Gordo. Linda rather gets a hold of babies. She catches every little child that shows up here (in that way she is just like Nick's mom, JoAnn). Taben, the farrier's daughter, did not want to leave anymore (s. photo).

Bei 40 Grad wird das Leben etwas muehsam (Tav und Tine koennen sich nicht mehr ueber die Kaelte beschweren), aber irgendwann muss es ja wieder abkuehlen. Drueckt die Daumen fuer uns!

Life gets tough at close to 100 degrees Fahrenheit (40 Celsius) (Tav and Tine cannot complain about the cold weather anymore) but hopefully it will cool down soon. Cross your fingers for us!

Heute einfach mal ein paar vermischte Bilder, bevor ich Euch morgen unsere neuen Gaeste vorstelle. Wir werden in Sued-Dakota reiten und danach noch ein Pferd kaufen (oder mehrere). Die Heusaison ist beendet, und Nick und ich werden mitfahren und endlich mal wieder gemeinsam reiten.

Today some pics, I will present the new guests tomorrow. We'll be riding in South Dakota and hopefully buy a horse on the way home (or more). The hay season is finished and Nick and I will go, too and finally ride together again.

Allen geht es gut, sie haben heute morgen Nachbars Rinder aus den unserigen herausgecuttet. Heute Abend grillen wir am See. Das Wetter ist herrlich, sonnig, aber nicht zu heiss ... das gefaellt einer Norddeutschen wie mir ... nur gewisse Leute aus Frankfurt lieben Temperaturen ueber 30 Grad.

Everyone is fine, this morning they cut neighbor's cattle out of ours. This evening we'll be grilling at the lake. The weather is beautiful, sunny but not too hot ... enjoyable for a Northern German like me ... only some people in Frankfurt love temps over 90 degrees.

Oben seht Ihr, wie man ein Tipi professionell aufbaut (Brandy und Thomas) ... ob die Indianer das auch so machen? Danach ein Foto auf dem Weg zum Flughafen ... schaut Euch den Beifahrer ganz genau an! Dann folgt ein kleiner Cowboy for Ziegenherde. Und auf den letzten drei Bildern seht Ihr einige unserer hart arbeitenden Angestellten! Ach ja, und dann noch ein Foto mit Pferden ... Pferde?

Wyoming - der Cowboy-State / Wyoming - the cowboy state

Wyoming ist der zehntgroesste, aber mit knapp 500.000 Einwohnern der bevoelkerungsaermste Bundesstaat der USA und nach Alaska der Bundesstaat mit der zweitgeringsten Bevoelkerungsdichte. Wyoming ist etwa 30 Prozent kleiner als Deutschland und damit in etwa so gross wie Grossbritannien, hat jedoch nur etwa so viele Einwohner wie Hannover. Er liegt im Westen der Vereinigten Staaten und steigt von den Great Plains Ost-Wyomings zu den Rocky Mountains hin an.

Wyoming is the tenth biggest but with barely 500,000 inhabitants the least populated US state and after Alaska the one with the second lowest population density. Wyoming is about as big as Great Britain but only has as many inhabitants as Birmingham. It is situated in the West of the USA and reaches from the Great Plains in the East to the Rocky Mountains in the West.

Der Name Wyoming stammt aus der Sprache der Algonkin-Indianer und bedeutet „Grosse Ebenen“. Er wurde der poetischen Erzaehlung "Gertrude of Wyoming" entnommen, die Thomas Campbell 1809 geschrieben hatte. Der groesste Ort ist die Hauptstadt Cheyenne mit ca. 55.000 Einwohnern. Spitznamen sind „Equality State“ nach dem Motto des Staates: „Equal Rights“ (Gleiche Rechte) und: Cowboy State.

The name Wyoming is derived from the language of the Algonkin Indians and means "Great Plains". It was taken from the novella "Gertrude of Wyoming" which was written by Thomas Campbell in 1809. The largest city is the capital, Cheyenne, with about 55,000 inhabitants. Nick names are "Equality State" after the state's motto "Equal Rights" and "Cobow State".

Der erste Nationalpark der Welt (1872), Yellowstone, befindet sich in Wyoming. Und auch das erste National Monument (1906): Devils Tower, eine halbe Stunde von unserer Ranch entfernt.

Bis zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts war Wyoming zu einem großen Teil von Indianern bewohnt. Als die Weissen von Osten weiter und weiter nach Westen vordrangen, gerieten die Indianerstaemme Wyomings immer staerker unter Druck. Seit Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts gehoerte Wyoming mit Ausnahme des Suedwestens zur franzoesischen Kolonie Louisiana. 1762 ging das Territorium an Spanien, 1800 wiederum an Frankreich. Drei Jahre spaeter erwarben die USA mit dem Louisiana-Purchase das Gebiet der Louisiana-Kolonie fuer 15 Millionen US-Dollar. Der suedwestliche Teil gehoerte erst zu Utah.

Till the end of the 19th century Wyoming was mostly inhabited by Indians. They were more and more pushed out when white settlers came in from the East. Since the end of the 17th century most of Wyoming belonged to the French colony of Louisiana. 1762 it went back to Spain, 1800 back to France. Three years later the USA bought Wyoming as part of the Louisiana purchase for 15 million Dollars. The southwestern part first belonged to Utah.

Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts stiessen im Norden moeglicherweise franzoesische Fallensteller als erste Weisse in das Gebiet von Wyoming vor, gesichert sind aber erst die Reisen von John Colter im Jahre 1807 in die Yellowstone-Gegend. Seinen Berichten von Geysiren schenkte kaum jemand Glauben. Zwanzig Jahre spaeter erkundete Jim Bridger den Suedpass über die Rockies. Diese Route wurde ab 1841 Teil des beruehmten Orgegon Trails, ueber den viele Pioniere nach Westen vorstiessen. Entlang des Trails schossen in kurzer Zeit viele Forts aus dem Boden, in Wyoming zum Beispiel Fort Laramie (1834) und Fort Bridger (1843).

It is assumed that at the end of the 18th century French trappers were the first whites that came in from the North. For sure we know that John Colter travelled into the Yellowstone area in 1807. Hardly anyone believed his stories of geysires. Twenty years later Jim Bridger found the South Pass across the Rockies. This route became part of the famous Oregon Trail that led many pioneers West. Along the trail forts were founded like Fort Laramie (1834) and Fort Bridger (1843).

Nachdem die Union Pacific Railroad 1867 die Stadt Cheyenne mit dem Osten verbunden hatte, stieg die Zahl der Weissen in Wyoming kontinuierlich an. Am 25. Juli 1868 gruendeten sie das Wyoming-Territory. Im Gegensatz zu den benachbarten Bundesstaaten Montana, South Dakota und Colorado gab es in Wyoming nie einen ploetzlichen Bevoelkerungszuwachs aufgrund von groesseren Edelmetall-Funden wie Gold und Silber. Einzig Kupfer wurde in verschiedenen Teilen Wyomings gefunden.

After the Union Pacific Railroad connected Cheyenne with the East in 1867, the number of white settlers increased continually. On July 25, 1868 they founded the Wyoming Territory. Other than neighboring states like Montana, South Dakota and Colorado Wyoming did not experience a sudden increase in inhabitants because it did not provide any gold or silver. Only copper was found in some areas.

Das Wyoming-Territorium (aus dem der Bundesstaat spaeter entstand) fuehrte 1869 als erstes Gebiet der USA (und lange vor Deutschland) das Frauenwahlrecht ein. Wyoming waehlte spaeter auch die erste weibliche Abgeordnete ins US-Parlament, hatte die erste weibliche Friedensrichterin und 1925 die erste Gouverneurin (Ministerpraesidentin) eines Bundesstaats der USA.

The Wyoming Territory which later became the State of Wyoming was the first in the US to grant suffrage to women in 1869. The first female member of the House of Representatives came from Wyoming. Wyoming elected the first female justice of peace and in 1925 the first female governor.

Im 19. Jahrhundert fuehrten viele Indianer-Staemme Wyomings einen verzweifelten Verteidigungskrieg gegen die einstroemenden Weissen. Die verbuendeten Lakota, Arapaho und Cheyenne siegten zwar in einigen Scharmuetzeln und Schlachten ueber Truppen der US-Armee – den bekanntesten Sieg trugen sie von der Schlacht am Little Bighorn (1876) davon –, gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts mussten sie aber vor der weissen Uebermacht kapitulieren. Ein wesentlicher Faktor dabei war, dass die Weissen die Bisons systematisch abschossen und damit den Indianern die Lebensgrundlage entzogen. Einer, der sich bei der Bisonjagd besonders hervortat, war Buffalo Bill Cody. Gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts lebten alle Indianer Wyomings in Reservaten, meist ausserhalb Wyomings.

In the 19th century the Native American tribes fought desperately against the waves of white people coming into the country. The Lakota, Arapaho and Cheyenne won a few fights against the US troups - the most known one is the Battle at the Little Bighorn (1876) - but at the end of the 19th century they had to give up. Part of the reason was that the whites systematically killed the bisons and thus robbed the Indians of their livelyhood. One very famous buffalo hunter was Buffalo Bill Cody. At the end of the 19th century most Indians lived in reservations, mostly outside of Wyoming.

Am 10. Juli 1890 wurde der Bundesstaat als 44. den USA angeschlossen.

On July 10, 1890 Wyoming became the 44th state of the USA.

Ich bin in Deutschland in einem Haus aufgewachsen, das erbaut wurde, bevor Kolumbus Amerika fand. Geschichte ist relativ ... aber auch wenn die Geschichte Wyomings noch jung ist, so ist sie doch unglaublich bunt.

I grew up in Germany in a house that was built before Columbus found America. History is relative ... but even if Wyoming's history is quite young, it has been amazingly colorful.
