Abreisen, wenn's am schoensten ist / Leaving when it couldn't get better

Heute sind leider Meisterfotograf Andy (s. Foto unten) und seine Tochter Lisa (mit Thomas und Emmett auf dem Motorrad und mit Kathleen und Emmett auf dem Boot) sowie "Stormin' Norman" (Foto mit Gauge) abgereist. Zum Glueck haben alle angedroht, naechstes Jahr wiederzukommen.

Today master photographer Andy (s. photo below) and his daughter Lisa (with Thomas and Emmett on the motorcycle and with Kathleen and Emmett on the boat) unfortunately left. As did "Stormin' Norman" (photo with Gauge). Luckily all threatened to come back next year.

Jo wollte sich gestern die Haare schneiden lassen, aber nicht von Thomas mit dem Messer, sondern von Brandy mit der Schere (meiner Meinung nach kaum weniger riskant ;-) Ueberhaupt: Thomas und die Frauen, s. Foto oben mit Andy und Brandy am See.

Jo wanted to get her hair cut yesterday but not by Thomas with a knife but by Brandy with scissors (in my opinion not less risky ;-) Really: Thomas and women, s. photo above with Andy and Brandy at the lake.

Aber es gibt auch welche, die arbeiten: Nick hat den ganzen Tag Ballen gepresst, s. Foto. Und heute hat er den ganzen Tag Ballen in die neue Scheune gefahren.

But there are also some who work: Nick baled the whole day, s. photo. And today he drove bales into the new barn.

Bernard und Bianca in Hulett / Bernard and Bianca in Hulett

Fuer eine Festivitaet in Hulett haben wir heute ueber 100 Heuballen in die Stadt gebracht (als Sitz-gelegenheiten). Jugendliche uebernahmen das Abladen ... leider waren auch unfreiwillige Passagiere Teil der Ladung ... Maeuse fielen zu Hunderten aus den Ballen und verteilten sich ueber die Stadt ... zur Freude der Anwohner :-( Auf dem Foto oben versuchen einige der Nager, in die Bank einzubrechen. Nur einer behielt in der Aufregung die Uebersicht: Cowboy Emmett, der oben auf der Ladung stand.

For an event in Hulett we brought over 100 hay bales to town today (for seating). School kids unloaded them ... but unfortunately there were unvoluntary passengers ... hundreds of mice fell out of the bales and scattered across town ... much to the delight of the Hulett people :-( On the photo some of the rodents try to break into the bank. Only one person stayed calm: cowboy Emmett who stood on top of the bales.

Vor und hinter den Kulissen / In front of and behind the scenes

Heute haben wir mit dem Farmen begonnen. Damit bezeichnet man hier den Ackerbau im Gegensatz zur Viehzucht, dem Ranchen. Verglichen mit dem Mittleren Westen, der Kornkammer der USA, kann man in Wyoming aufgrund der Boeden, des Klimas und der relativ hohen Lage nicht allzu viel anbauen.

Today we have begun with farming - as opposed to ranching. Compared with the Midwest, America's "bread basket", Wyoming's soil, climate and altitude won't yield many crops.

Wir saeen nur alle sieben bis zehn Jahre auf ca. 100 Hektar ein Gemisch aus Luzerne und Graesern aus, um Heu ernten zu koennen. Da wir hier nicht kuenstlich bewaessern koennen (zumindest nicht wirtschaftlich), gibt es meist nur einen Schnitt Ende Juni, Anfang Juli. Die durchschnittlich 12.000 kleinen Ballen (wenn es denn genuegend regnet) verfuettern wir an unsere Pferde, das Gros verkaufen wir. An Rinder verfuettert man grosse Ballen (ca. 600 Kilo das Stueck), das ist effizienter, wenn man die entsprechenden Maschinen dafuer hat.

We only seed a mix of alfalfa and grass on about 250 acres every seven to ten years. Since we cannot irrigate on our land, at least not economically, we mostly only get one cut at the end of June/ beginning of July. We feed the more or less 12,000 small bales (if we got enough rain) to our horses and sell most of it. Cattle are fed big bales (about 1,200 lbs) because this is more efficient if you have the appropriate machinery.

Nick saet ausserdem Futterpflanzen aus, die er nicht erntet. Damit will er das Wild auf der Ranch halten und unsere Jagd verbessern.

Nick also grows feed plots which he does not harvest but leaves for the game to eat to improve our hunting.

Da die Boeden hier recht trocken sind, haelt Nick nichts vom Pfluegen. Er verwendet stattdessen einen sogenannten Drill (s. Foto), der den Boden nur aufritzt und gleichzeitig der Aussaat dient.

Since the soil is rather dry, Nick does not believe in plowing. He uses a drill (s. photo) instead which cuts open the soil and releases the seed.

Hier seht Ihr Nick und Andy vor ... und (unten) hinter den Kulissen ;-) Aber keine Sorge: Wir hatten auch Zeit, um Pferde zu arbeiten. Brandy nahm sich Pinkerton und Bailey vor, Andy Pep und Poncho und ich Stella und Cody. Die Bueroarbeit, z.B. die Aktualisierung der Webseite, blieb mal wieder liegen.

Here you can see Nick and Andy in front of ... and behing (below) the scenes ;-) But don't worry: We had time to train horses as well. Brandy dealt with Pinkerton and Bailey, Andy with Pep and Poncho and I with Stella and Cody. The office work, i.e. updating the webpage, again did not get done.

Kleine rechteckige bitte / Small squares, please

Kaum wird das Wetter besser, faengt das Telefon an zu klingeln. Den Leuten faellt ein, dass sie vielleicht doch noch mehr Heu brauchen, bevor uns die naechste Kaeltewelle ueberrollt.

As soon as the weather improves, the phone starts ringing. People remember that they should maybe buy more hay before the next cold wave strikes.

Wir haben 2009 etwa 10.000 Ballen Luzerne/Grass-Heu produziert, 1.000 Ballen Haferheu und 500 Ballen Weizenheu. Leider hatten wir nur genuegend Regen fuer einen Schnitt. In Deutschland bekommt man immer mehrere Schnitte. Und da wir im Winter keine grosse Rinderherde halten, brauchen wir keine grossen Rundballen, sondern koennen die meisten unserer kleinen rechteckigen Ballen an Pferdebesitzer verkaufen. Kleine Ballen machen zwar mehr Arbeit, bringen aber auch mehr Geld. Und die meisten Privatleute haben nicht das Equipment fuer grosse Ballen, die fast eine Tonne wiegen.

In 2009, we produced about 10,000 bales of alfalfa/grass hay, 1,000 oat hay bales and 500 wheat hay bales. Due to lack of rain we could only cut once. In many parts of the USA and Europe you get several cuts a summer. Since we don't keep big amounts of cattle in the winter, we don't need to make big round bales but can sell the small square bales to horse owners. Small squares are more labor intensive but we can also ask more money for them. And most people if they aren't ranchers don't have the eqipment for the big bales which weigh close to a ton.

Hier seht Ihr Nick im John Deere-Traktor, der mit einem besonderen Aufsatz jeweils 10 Ballen gleichzeitig greifen und laden kann. Die Ballen sind unter grossen Planen. Und weil die schwierig zu handhaben sind, will Nick bald seine neue Heuscheune bauen.

Here you can see Nick in his John Deere tractor. A special loader can grip 10 bales simultaneously. The bales are under huge tarps. And because they are difficult to handle, Nick is planning on building his new hay barn soon.
