Vor ein paar Jahren habe ich Steffi geholfen, einen Job auf einer Nachbarranch zu bekommen. Dort verliebte sie sich in Justin, den damaligen Jagdguide. Seit zwei Jahren sind die Beiden nun verheiratet und leben in Nevada. Jetzt haben sie uns endlich mal wieder besucht (hier mit Vegas und Tucker). /
A few years ago I helped Steffi find a job on a neighboring ranch. Once there, she fell in love with Justin, who worked as a hunting guide then. The two have been married for two years now and live in Nevada. This September they finally came to visit again (here with Vegas and Tucker).

Dafuer dass er eigentlich lieber am Strand liegen wollte (aber Freundin Nadine zuliebe mit auf die Ranch kam), hat Michael ordentlich mitangepackt. / Originally Michael wanted to spend his vacation on the beach but came to the ranch instead for his grildfriend Nadine ... but then the beachboy cowboyed up.

Alix und Manon (Foto ganz unten, bei den Ziegen, wo wir am vergangenen Samstag gearbeitet haben) sowie Caroline und Cristin mussten leider wieder abreisen.

Dafuer sind Sabine (oben, auf Bailey), Gisela (zweites Bild , auf Grover) und Silke (drittes Bild, auf Tramp) angekommen. Wir mussten gleich unsere Rinder auf eine andere Koppel treiben ... bei all der Arbeit haben die Neuankoemmlinge schnell ihren Respekt vor dem schwierigen Terrain ueberwunden ... ihre Pferde zu Hause seien Weicheier, meinten sie spaeter.

Instead Sabine (photo above, on Bailey), Gisela (second pic, on Grover) and Silke (third pic, on Tramp) came. Wir had to move cattle on their first day ... faced with all that work they quickly lost their respect for the difficult terrain ... and later on called their own horses at home sissies.

Am Abend kam ein Gewitter auf ... Andreas und Michaela, die heute morgen abgereist sind, liessen sich gern vor der Panoramakulisse fotografieren. Zur Vergroesserung auf die Fotos klicken.

Es ist gerade etwas abgekuehlt, 25 statt 35 Grad ... angenehm!

It just cooled down a bit, from the 90ies to the 70ies ... pleasant!

Wandern vor grosser Kulisse / Hiking in front of tall sights

Manchmal ist so viel zu tun, dass ich einfach nicht mehr dazu komme, den Blog zu schreiben. Seit Montag morgen um 5 Uhr bin ich mit dem Heuen fertig, Nick muss noch alle Ballen reinbringen.

Sometimes there is so much to do that I cannot keep up with my blog. Monday morning at 5 am I was finally done with haying. Nick still needs to get all the bales in.

Gestern nachmittag haben wir geropt, Cristin hat gewonnen (auf dem Fuchsschecken Bailey), aber Manon (auf dem Rappschecken Buster) und Alix (auf der braunen Stute Jazz) waren ihr ziemlich dicht auf den Fersen. Sonntag und Montag haben wir Rinder "geschoben", aber Sonntag nachmittag sind Cristin, Caroline, Michaela, Andreas (v.l.n.r.) und ich bei Gluthitze um den Devils Tower gewandert (s. Foto ganz oben). Manon und Alix wollten sich lieber im Reiten ohne Sattel ueben und ritten zum See, um zu schwimmen. Im Nachhinein sicher die bessere Idee ;-)

Yesterday afternoon we roped, Cristin won (on sorrel paint Bailey) followed closely by Manon (on black paint Buster) and Alix (on bay mare Jazz). Sunday and Monday we also moved cattle but Sunday afternoon Cristin, Caroline, Michaela, Andreas (from left to right) and I walked around Devils Tower in burning heat (photo above). Manon and Alix decided to ride bareback to the lake to go swimming. Probably a better idea if I think about it ;-)

Gary hat begonnen, unsere Getreidescheune wieder auf Vordermann zu bringen (s. Foto unten). Wir haben noch etliche Bauprojekte, um ihn auf Trab zu halten ;-)

Gary has started repair on our old corn barn (photo below). We have still many building projects to keep him going ;-)

Und dann war da noch Caroline, die Fahrunterricht von Nick erhielt ;-) Foto ebenfalls anbei.

And then there was Caroline who got driving lessons from Nick ;-) Photo attached as well.

Ritt in den Sonnenuntergang / Ride into the sunset

Da ich heute am Schreibtisch sitze (der Boden ist zu feucht zum Maehen) und das Leben an mir voruebergeht, gibt es heute ein Bild von Andreas. Lisa, Andy, Thomas und Brandy reiten ohne Sattel in den Sonnenuntergang. Ja, klingt kitschig, ist aber trotzdem schoen.

Since I am sitting at the desk today (the ground is too wet to swath) and life passes by me, you are seeing a picture by Andreas. Lisa, Andy, Thomas and Brandy are riding bareback into the sunset. Yes, sounds kitschy but is beautiful nevertheless.

Die Buchhaltung ruft (wofuer ich gaenzlich ungeeignet bin).

I have to do accounting now (which really isn't my strength at all).

Pioniere / Pioneers

Was fuer ein Wochenende! Freitag morgen sind Kathleen, Cristin, Caroline, Andy und ich durch tiefe Canyons und auf Plateaus geritten und kamen uns dabei wie Pioniere vor (oben Jazz' Ohren, dann die "Maedels", danach ich auf Jazz mit Gauge). Nachmittags ging es zum Rodeo "Days of 76" im historischen Deadwood (Foto) mit anschliessendem Tanz.

What a weekend! Friday morning Kathleen, Cristin, Caroline, Andy and I rode through deep canyons and onto plateaus and felt like pioneers (above Jazz' ears, then the "girls", after that I on Jazz with Gauge). In the afternoon we drove to the rodeo "Days of 76" in historic Deadwood (photo). And danced afterwards.

Samstag, nach wenigen Stunden Schlaf, hiess es aufstehen und auf zum Ranchrodeo nach Sundance. Ein Ranchrodeo ist kein traditionelles Rodeo, sondern es treffen Teams unterschiedlicher Ranches zusammen, die sich bei Geschicklichkeitsaufgaben messen, die an die taegliche Arbeit eines Cowboys angelehnt sind (Foto). Unsere Nachbarn waren auch dabei. Ziemlich spannend!

On Saturday, after a few hours of sleep we got ready again, this time for a rand rodeo in Sundance. A ranch rodeo ist not a traditional rodeo. Teams of various ranches compete in different tasks which are derived from a cowboy's typical work day (photo). Our neighbors participated as well. Pretty exciting!

Abends kamen Andreas und Michaela aus Deutschland an. Und ich freue mich auf mein Bett.

In the evening our new German guests, Andreas and Michaela arrived. And I am looking forward to my bed.

Der Star von morgen / Tomorrow's star

Tja, Andreas hat nicht nur eine gute Ausruestung, sondern auch ein gutes Auge. Er hat uns schon mal die ersten Bilder zur Verfuegung gestellt ... von denen ich Euch in den naechsten Tagen einige zeigen werde. Hier vorab Emmett: Rockidol von morgen ;-)

Well, Andreas does not only have good equipment, he has a good eye. He has provided the first of his pictures ... some of which I will show you within the next few days. Here Emmett: tomorrow's rock star ;-)

Abreisen, wenn's am schoensten ist / Leaving when it couldn't get better

Heute sind leider Meisterfotograf Andy (s. Foto unten) und seine Tochter Lisa (mit Thomas und Emmett auf dem Motorrad und mit Kathleen und Emmett auf dem Boot) sowie "Stormin' Norman" (Foto mit Gauge) abgereist. Zum Glueck haben alle angedroht, naechstes Jahr wiederzukommen.

Today master photographer Andy (s. photo below) and his daughter Lisa (with Thomas and Emmett on the motorcycle and with Kathleen and Emmett on the boat) unfortunately left. As did "Stormin' Norman" (photo with Gauge). Luckily all threatened to come back next year.

Jo wollte sich gestern die Haare schneiden lassen, aber nicht von Thomas mit dem Messer, sondern von Brandy mit der Schere (meiner Meinung nach kaum weniger riskant ;-) Ueberhaupt: Thomas und die Frauen, s. Foto oben mit Andy und Brandy am See.

Jo wanted to get her hair cut yesterday but not by Thomas with a knife but by Brandy with scissors (in my opinion not less risky ;-) Really: Thomas and women, s. photo above with Andy and Brandy at the lake.

Aber es gibt auch welche, die arbeiten: Nick hat den ganzen Tag Ballen gepresst, s. Foto. Und heute hat er den ganzen Tag Ballen in die neue Scheune gefahren.

But there are also some who work: Nick baled the whole day, s. photo. And today he drove bales into the new barn.
