Fernweh / Yearning for Wyoming

Nachdem bereits vor einigen Wochen Jutta, Claudia, Stef, Marion, Toni, Andy, Tine und Antje zu einem New Haven Ranch-Treffen in Westdeutschland zusammen gekommen waren (s. u. auf Tinkern in typisch deutschem Regenwetter), trafen sich Dagmar, Stefan, Christine, Sandra und Lena (s.o.) zu Halloween im Allgaeu und verbrachten den Tag in der Westernstadt Pullman-City - bei fuer Deutschland ueberraschend schoenem Wetter.

After Jutta, Claudia, Stef, Marion, Toni, Andy, Tine and Antje had come together for a new Haven Ranch meeting in Western Germany several weeks ago (s. below on Tinkers in the typical German rainy weather), Dagmar, Stefan, Christine, Sandra and Lena met at Halloween in the Allgaeu (Southern Germany) and spent the day in Pullman-City (fake Western town) - in for Germany surprisingly nice weather.

Apropos Wetter: Hier scheint wieder die Sonne, aber der Schneepflug musste uns trotzdem befreien. Nachdem Bob, der schon seit Jahren bei uns jagt, seinen Hirschbock geschossen hatte, war nun auch Jim erfolgreich: Nachdem er die erste Kugel durch Toms Truck gejagt hatte (*ooops*), traf die zweite den Bock. Und nun koennen sich unsere Jaeger wieder auf den Weg machen ... die naechste Gruppe kommt am Freitag.

As for the weather: The sun is shining again but the snow plow had to free us anyway. After Bob, who has been hunting with us for years, had shot his deer buck, Jim was successful as well: After the first bullet hit Tom's truck (*ooops*), the second one killed a buck. Now our hunters can travel home again. The next group is going to come in on Friday.

Freie Sicht bis zum Horizont / Open range

Kein Baum weit und breit ... gestern haben wir Brandon geholfen, seine Kuehe zu "schieben". Oben seht Ihr Claudia auf Chocolate. Auf dem Weg zur Herde sind wir viel getrabt und galoppiert ... herrlich.

No tree in sight ... yesterday we helped Brandon move his cattle. Above you see Claudia on Chocolate. On the way to the herd we trotted and cantered a lot ... wonderful.

Voran Claudia (2. Foto), dann Jutta auf Patch, Tine auf Pinkerton, Brandon auf Jet und Katha auf Buster. Auf dem naechsten Bild Kerstin auf Rena, Andy auf Pal und Barbara auf Juno. Anthony war auf dem 4-Wheeler unterwegs, um Cody zu finden, den wir Brandon als Reitpferd da gelassen hatten und der sich unter die Rinder gemischt hatte. Ein schwarz-weisses Pferd ist da nicht so einfach zu finden.

Anthony drove on the 4-wheeler to search for Cody who we had left as a riding horse for Brandon but who was running with the cattle. A black and white horse is hard to find in the midst of bovines that look the same.

Weiter unten Barbara mit Juno hinter der Herde und noch ein Panoramabild. Sabine und Ellen haben sich einen ruhigeren Tag auf der Ranch gegoennt und sind mit Brandy und Emmett ausgeritten, waehrend Nick, Gary und Thomas wie immer an der neuen Heuscheune gebaut haben ... Fotos folgen.

Below Barbara on Juno behind the herd and a panoramic view. Sabine and Ellen enjoyed an easier day on the ranch and rode out with Brandy and Emmett while Nick, Gary and Thomas worked on the new hay barn ... as usual. Photos will follow.

Brandon managt zwei riesige Ranches (ohne Gebauede) in South Dakota. Im Winter kann man dort kaum Rinder halten, weil es keinen Wetterschutz gibt. Aber im Sommer ist es bestes Weideland. Einige Investoren von der Ostkueste haben hier Geld angelegt. Brandon treibt nun insgesamt 2400 einjaehrige Rinder von Koppel zu Koppel, die hier bis zum Oktober fett werden sollen. Dazu unterteilt er die Koppeln mit Elektrozaun, um moeglichst viele Tiere auf moeglichst kleiner Flaeche moeglichst kurz grasen zu lassen. Das nennt man zeitkontrolliertes Grasen.

Brandon is managing two big ranches (without buildings) in South Dakota. In the winter one cannot really keep cattle there because of the lack of protection from the weather. But in summer it's superior grazing land. Some investors from the East Coast bought the land. Now Brandon moves 2400 one-year old cattle from pasture to pasture which are supposed to get fat by October. He separates the pastures with additional electric fences to make sure that as many animals as possible graze on as small a pasture as possible for as short a time as possible. One calls this time-controlled grazing.

Jede Pflanze soll abgebissen werden (deshalb viele Rinder auf kleiner Flaeche), damit die Rinder bei groesserer Auswahl nicht verstaerkt ihre Lieblingspflanzen fressen und andere (z.B. Unkraeuter) dadurch ueberhand nehmen. Jede Pflanze soll aber nur einmal abgefressen werden (deshalb haeufiger Wechsel der Koppel), damit sie stark bleibt und wieder voll nachwachsen kann. Da die Pflanzen im Fruehling schneller wachsen, werden die Rinder haeufiger getrieben, dann im Sommer, wenn das Wachstum sich verlangsamt, seltener. Auf diese Art und Weise nutzt man Land optimal, ohne es auszubeuten. Man spricht auch von Nachhaltigkeit.

Every plant needs to be grazed (many cattle on small pasture) so that the cattle don't have the option to just graze their favorite plants which would enable others (less popular ones) like weeds to take over. But every plant should only be grazed once (moving cattle often) so that it stays strong and can regrow easily. Since grass grows faster in spring, the cattle are moved more often. In summer when groth slows down, cattle moves are less frequent. Thus, the productivity of the land is very high without destroying it. One calls this sustainable.

Und da das Treiben fuer Rinder Stress sein kan (weniger Gewichtszunahme), ist es wichtig, sie langsam zu Pferde zu treiben. Das Cowboyleben / The cowboy life

Und schon wieder ein Branding bei einem Nachbarn, bei dem alle mithelfen durften. Unsere Maedels (Jutta, Andy, Claudia, Sabine, Tine, Jo und Brandy) haben sich maechtig ins Zeug gelegt. Ich habe kastriert. Nick und Anthony haben geropt. Und unsere neue Ranchhand Thomas hat sich schon gleich als Calf Wrestler bewaehrt. Fotos folgen morgen, nachdem ich sie mir von allen zusammengeklaut habe.

And another branding at a neighbor's. Everyone pitched in. Our girls (Jutta, Andy, Claudia, Sabine, Tine, Jo and Brandy) gave all. I castrated. Nick and Anthony roped. And our new ranch hand, Thomas, started his time in Wyoming with wrestling calves. Photos will follow tomorrow when I will have stolen them from the others.

Mit meiner alten Kamera und minikleiner Speicherkarte habe ich heute nur ein paar Foto vom Berg aus gemacht, auf den ich mit Stute Rena geklettert bin. Aus der Vogelperspektive seht Ihr Reiter und Rinder auf dem Weg zum Branding.

With my own old camera and the smallest chip card I could only take a few pictures from a hill that I climbed on mare Rena. From above you can see riders and cattle on their way to the branding.

Und dann war da noch Jutta, die Cisco als Reittier ausprobiert hat. Der Esel wusste nicht so ganz, was er machen sollte, war aber wie immer brav. Ansonsten: schoenes Wetter, glueckliche Menschen ... und gutes Essen!

And then there was Jutta who tried out Cisco as a riding mount. The donkey did not really know what to do but was friendly as usual. Other than that: beautiful weather, happy people ... and good food!

Kueken / Chicks

Frank, hier ist endlich ein Foto von Sabine (auf Jet) ... sie lebt noch ... trotz der tiefen Canyons, in die wir sie taeglich jagen. Meine neue Kamera ist noch nicht angekommen, deshalb verwende ich heute Sabines Bilder. Zur Information: Frank, Sabines Ehemann, war vor fuenf Jahren hier. Jetzt hat es auch endlich Sabine geschafft. Zusammen koennen die Beiden nicht so lange Urlaub machen, da sie Kinder haben.

Frank, here is finally a photo of Sabine (on Jet) ... she is alive ... despite the deep canyons we are chasing her into. My new camera has not arrived, yet. That's why I had to get Sabine's photos. For every one's information: Frank, Sabine's husband, was here five years ago. Now Sabine has made it here. The two of them cannot take a longer vacation together because they have kids.

Was sonst noch so geschah ... waehrend Maike und Gilbert nun den Yellowstone Park bereisen, sind Sabine und ihre Freundin Tine hier sowie Claudia und Jutta, die uns schon vor einem Jahr "heimgesucht" haben. Die Beiden kann unser Gelaende hier nicht mehr schocken, waehrend Sabine und Tine sich noch eingewoehnen muessen ;-) Heute haben sie zusammen mit Anthony versucht, unseren Bueffel, die Longhornkuh und Anhang zu treiben ... bisher ohne Erfolg. Aber morgen ist auch noch ein Tag.

What else happended ... while Maike and Gilbert are traveling through Yellowstone Park, Sabine and her friend Tine have arrived as well as Claudia and Jutta, repeaters from last year. Latter ones already know our terrain, Sabine and Tine still have to get used to the wilderness ;-) Together with Anthony they tried to move our buffalo, longhorn cow etc. ... without success. Tomorrow is another day.

Brandy und Emmett waren heute in der Stadt, um Thomas, unsere neue Ranchhand, abzuholen. Ich habe gekocht, war aber auch kurz in Hulett, um unsere neuen Huehnerkueken von der Post abzuholen. Unten seht Ihr Tine, Sabine und Claudia mit einigen von ihnen.

Brandy and Emmett were in town today to pick up Thomas, our new ranchhand. I cooked but also drove to Hulett to pick up new chicks from the post office. Below you see Tine, Sabine and Claudia with some of them.

Ach ja, Mike, unser Wrangler vom vergangenen Jahr, hat seinen Trailer und sein Pferd Blue an Brandy verkauft. Er zieht zurueck nach Kentucky zu seiner Familie, um dort in einer der Minen zu arbeiten. Schade!

By the way, Mike, last year's wrangler, sold his truck and his horse Blue to Brandy. He is moving back to Kentucky to his family to work in a mine. Too bad!
