Wir - Nick, Nicks Mutter JoAnn und ich - haben Weihnachten bei Brandy, Brandon, Emmett und Garrett in Montana verbracht. Auf der Ranch, die Brandon jetzt managt. Mit dabei waren auch Brandons Eltern Kathy und Mike. Da ich gerade Smokey, Heikes Hund, babysitte und ihn und Gauge nicht allein zu Hause lassen wollte, waren auch sie mit von der Partie ... und fanden in Billie und Luna, Brandys und Brandons Hunden, willige Spielgefaehrten.

We - Nick, Nick's mother JoAnn and I - spent Christmas with Brandy, Brandon, Emmett and Garrett in Montana. On the ranch which Brandon is managing now. Brandon's parents, Kathy and Mike, were there, too. Since I am babysitting Smokey, Heike's dog, and did not want to leave him and Gauge alone at home, they joined us as well ... and found willing playmates in Billie and Luna, Brandy's and Brandon's dogs.

Endlich konnte ich auch Patch und Scotch wiedersehen, die bei Brandy als Ab-und-zu Reitpferde ihren Lebensabend verbringen. Ausserdem gehoert - wie bereits berichtet - Dun It (jetzt Roy) zur Herde. Esel Cisco verbringt den Winter hier, um als Roping Dummy zu dienen. Und dann ist da noch Emmetts Fohlen Bonita.

I could finally see Patch and Scotch again who are spending their retirement as once-in-a-while riding horses at Brandy's. And as mentioned before, Dun It (now Roy) is part of the herd as well. Donkey Cisco is spending the winter in Montana as a roping dummy. And then there is Emmett's filly Bonita.

Mit im Gepaeck hatten wir einen lebendigen Hahn fuer Brandys einziges Huhn, gefrorene Gaensebrueste fuers Abendessen und einen Tannenbaum ... denn auf der fast 20.000 Hektar grossen Ranch gibt es keine Baeume.

On the truck we also brought a live rooster for Brandy's single chicken, frozen goose breasts for supper and a Christmas tree ... since there are no trees on this 55,000 acre big ranch.

Kaum angelangt, fielen die Temperaturen ins Bodenlose. Wir mussten uns sehr warm anziehen, bevor wir raus gingen ... und genossen danach das warme Haus umso mehr. Nick und Brandon waren viel unterwegs, um unsere gemeinsamen Kuehe zu checken, die hier kalben sollten, bevor sie nach New Haven kommen. Insgesamt sehr entspannte Weihnachten ... obwohl ich natuerlich zu viel gegessen habe.

We were just there when the temperature fell rapidly. We had to put on several layers when going out ... and enjoyed the warm house the more after that. Nick and Brandon were gone part of the time to check on our joint cow herd. The cows are supposed to calf here before coming to New Haven. Altogether a very relaxing Christmas ... even though I ate too much.

Gaestewechsel am Samstag: Die alte Truppe ist weg, eine neue (s.o.) ist da. Das Wetter ist kuehl und sonnig, aber der Staub legt sich auf alles. Immer noch kein Regen in Sicht. Morgen werden wir unsere Rinder auf eine neue Koppel bringen muessen, das Gras wird knapp. Mehr im naechsten Blog.

Change of guests on Saturday: The old group left, a new one is here (see above). It's been getting cooler, still sunny and with dust everywhere. Still no rain in sight. Tomorrow we will move our cattle to a new pasture, there is little grass left. More in the next blog.

Wir mussten Frost wieder in die Klinik bringen, da der Huf sich abzuloesen drohte, aber zum Glueck scheint es ihm wieder besser zu gehen, so dass wir ihn wieder abholen koennen. Hier ist das aufgrund der weiten Entfernungen ja immer sehr zeitintensiv: Die Klinik ist zwei Stunden entfernt.

We had to drive Frost into the clinic again since his hoof was about to fall off. Luckily he got better against all odds and we can pick him up again. Due to the long distances here this always involves a lot of time: The clinic is two hours away.

Melissa ist wieder in England, und heute sind auch Klaus, Carola und Ralf abgereist. Es ist zwar immer noch knochentrocken, aber die Temperaturen werden langsam herbstlich (insbesondere nachts), und die Laubbaeume verfaerben sich.

Melissa is back in England and today Klaus, Carola and Ralf left as well. It is still very dry but the temperatures are getting cooler (especially at night) and the trees are changing color.

Gestern haben wir einem Nachbarn bei einem Branding geholfen (ich "durfte" kastrieren), heute steht Team Penning an. Und Nick und Mike sitzen auf unserem Dach und machen Laerm (hoffe, dass die Arbeiten bald beendet sind).

Yesterday we helped a neighbor with a branding (I was "allowed" to castrate), today team penning is on the agenda. And Nick and Mike are sitting on our roof and create a lot of noise (hopefully they will be done soon with the work).

Frank, hier ist endlich ein Foto von Sabine (auf Jet) ... sie lebt noch ... trotz der tiefen Canyons, in die wir sie taeglich jagen. Meine neue Kamera ist noch nicht angekommen, deshalb verwende ich heute Sabines Bilder. Zur Information: Frank, Sabines Ehemann, war vor fuenf Jahren hier. Jetzt hat es auch endlich Sabine geschafft. Zusammen koennen die Beiden nicht so lange Urlaub machen, da sie Kinder haben.

Frank, here is finally a photo of Sabine (on Jet) ... she is alive ... despite the deep canyons we are chasing her into. My new camera has not arrived, yet. That's why I had to get Sabine's photos. For every one's information: Frank, Sabine's husband, was here five years ago. Now Sabine has made it here. The two of them cannot take a longer vacation together because they have kids.

Was sonst noch so geschah ... waehrend Maike und Gilbert nun den Yellowstone Park bereisen, sind Sabine und ihre Freundin Tine hier sowie Claudia und Jutta, die uns schon vor einem Jahr "heimgesucht" haben. Die Beiden kann unser Gelaende hier nicht mehr schocken, waehrend Sabine und Tine sich noch eingewoehnen muessen ;-) Heute haben sie zusammen mit Anthony versucht, unseren Bueffel, die Longhornkuh und Anhang zu treiben ... bisher ohne Erfolg. Aber morgen ist auch noch ein Tag.

What else happended ... while Maike and Gilbert are traveling through Yellowstone Park, Sabine and her friend Tine have arrived as well as Claudia and Jutta, repeaters from last year. Latter ones already know our terrain, Sabine and Tine still have to get used to the wilderness ;-) Together with Anthony they tried to move our buffalo, longhorn cow etc. ... without success. Tomorrow is another day.

Brandy und Emmett waren heute in der Stadt, um Thomas, unsere neue Ranchhand, abzuholen. Ich habe gekocht, war aber auch kurz in Hulett, um unsere neuen Huehnerkueken von der Post abzuholen. Unten seht Ihr Tine, Sabine und Claudia mit einigen von ihnen.

Brandy and Emmett were in town today to pick up Thomas, our new ranchhand. I cooked but also drove to Hulett to pick up new chicks from the post office. Below you see Tine, Sabine and Claudia with some of them.

Ach ja, Mike, unser Wrangler vom vergangenen Jahr, hat seinen Trailer und sein Pferd Blue an Brandy verkauft. Er zieht zurueck nach Kentucky zu seiner Familie, um dort in einer der Minen zu arbeiten. Schade!

By the way, Mike, last year's wrangler, sold his truck and his horse Blue to Brandy. He is moving back to Kentucky to his family to work in a mine. Too bad!

Menards - der Himmel auf Erden / Menards - heaven on earth

Der Karaoke-Abend hat Spass gemacht. Mike (Copher) hat jeden dritten Song gebrummt, aeh, gesungen (Foto siehe unten). Da Nick und ich nicht trinken, hatten wir allerdings nicht allzu viel Sitzfleisch. Was auch gut war, da wir am Samstag morgen frueh nach Rapid City aufbrechen mussten. Wir wollten zu Menards, ein riesiger Baumarkt … und der Himmel auf Erden fuer Nick.

The karaoke evening was fun. Mike (Copher) growled - sorry - sang every third song (photo below). Since Nick and I don't drink, we did not last very long. Which was good because we had to leave early Saturday morning for Rapid City. We were headed to Menards, a big building supplies store ... and Nick's heaven on earth.

Ich bringe immer ausreichend Snacks,Getraenke und Lesematerial mit, denn wir verbringen jedes Mal Stunden bei Menards … kurz vor Ladenschluss (22 Uhr) springen wir dann in den Truck und fahren mit unserem 6 Meter langen Viehtrailer zum Hinterausgang, um alles zu laden … was dann meist auch noch ein bis zwei Stunden dauert … die armen Mitarbeiter muessen unseretwegen meist Ueberstunden machen. Aber wir wohnen 160 Kilometer (eine Strecke) entfernt und koennen nicht mal eben wieder vorbeikommen.

I always bring snacks, drinks and something to read because we tend to stay for hours ... shortly before they close (10 pm), we jump into the truck and drive to the back exit with our 18 ft stock trailer to load everything ... which takes one to two more hours ... the poor employess have to work over hours for us almost every time. But we live 100 miles away (one trip) and cannot drop by again just like that.

Nick baut an mehreren Haeusern, die neue Heuscheune nicht zu vergessen, da braucht es viel Material. Zwischendurch bin ich unterwegs gewesen, um die Lebensmittel fuer die Ranch zu besorgen … auch das dauert Stunden.

Nick's building on several houses, not to forget the new hay barn. He needs a lot of materials. In between I went grocery shopping for the ranch ... that also takes hours.

Leider hatte ich die Kamera nicht dabei … die Lademanoever bei Menards mit zwei bis drei Gabelstaplern waren sehenswert … zumindest fuer Maenner. Praezisionsarbeit. Ueberhaupt bin ich in Deutschland noch in keinem Baumarkt gewesen, in dem die Mitarbeiter so qualifiziert und motiviert sind. Wenn sie jetzt noch eine Buchhandlung integrieren wuerden, waere Menards auch mein Himmel auf Erden.

Unfortunately I forgot my camera ... the loading maneuvers at Menards involving two to three fork lifts were impressive ... at least for men. Precision work. I haven't been to a buildings supplies store in Germany that has employees as qualified and motivated. If they'd just integrate a book store, Menards would be my heaven on earth, too.

Glueck im Unglueck fuer Rick. Da mir ein Foto fehlt, kommt er heute dran (mit Heike waehrend ihres Schneemobilausflugs). Rick hat sich beschwert, dass ich ihn bisher nicht gezeigt habe … das wird hiermit nachgeholt.

A blessing in disguise for Rick. Since I am lacking a photo, he'll be on the blog today (with Heike during their snow mobile trip). Rick complained that I hadn't pictured him, yet ... here he is.

Der Blizzard ist uebrigens knapp an uns voruebergegangen … und heute – Sonntag – war es wieder warm und sonnig.

Unsere neuen Maenner / Our new men

Aufs Beeffalo warten wir immer noch, aber hier sind schon mal unsere neuen Maenner und ihre furchteinfloessenden Hunde: Wrangler Mike und Stubby (oben), Schreiner Gary und Mimi (unten). Dank Mimi fuehle ich mich wieder richtig sicher auf dieser Ranch. Frisch geduscht sitzt sie abends vor der Tuer und klaefft (in hohen Oktaven), was das Zeug haelt. Da Mimi nicht sterilisiert ist, schliessen wir schon Wetten ab ... wird Stubby der Glueckliche sein? Oder Gauge? Oder Homer? Ich habe da schon interessante Mischungen vor Augen.

We are still waiting for the beeffalo but here are our new men and their terrifying dogs: wrangler Mike and Stubby (above) and carpenter Gary and Mimi (below). Thanks to Mimi I feel safe again on this ranch. Freshly showered she sits in front of the door at night and barks (in high octaves), hell for leather. Since Mimi is not spayed, we are betting ... who will be the lucky one? Stubby, Gauge or Homer? I am envisioning the most interesting crosses.

Es ist noch nicht Fruehling / It's not spring, yet

Pustekuchen mit Fruehling ... mild, Sonnenschein, aber der Schnee ist noch sehr tief. Heute sind Mike, unser neuer Wrangler, Heike und ich ausgeritten. Die Ponies mussten ordentlich arbeiten. Heike ritt KC, Mike Grover und ich Doc. Der Schnee war unberuehrt ... von den Wildspuren mal abgesehen. Das sind die Tage, fuer die ich hier lebe ... obwohl eine Reithalle schon ganz praktisch waere ;-)

No way it's spring ... it's mild, sunny but the snow is still very deep. Today Mike, our new wrangler, Heike and I went on a trail ride. Our ponies had to work hard. Heike rode KC, Mike Grover and I Doc. The snow was untouched ... except from wildlife tracks. These are the days I live here for ... even though a covered arena would be nice ;-)

So, morgen geht's zum Ranchsitten zu Heike. Sie und Rick machen eine Schneemobiltour, und irgendjemand muss sich um ihre Tiere kuemmern.

So, tomorrow I will ranchsit for Heike. She and Rick will go on a snow mobile tour and someone has to take care of her critters.
