Eisiger Morgen / Icy morning: Nick, Will und/and Hap

Am Dienstag halfen wir einem Nachbarn, Kuehe und Kaelber in einer riesigen unwegsamen Koppel zu finden. Wir sind in einige abenteuerliche Situationen geraten, aber genau dann konnte ich natuerlich nicht fotografieren. Die Fotos zeigen auch nicht, wie kalt es war ... und zwischendurch schneite es auch wieder. Am Nachmittag kam dann der Husten, und seit gestern liege ich krank im Bett. Passend zum Saisonende.

On Tuesday we helped a neighbor find his cows and calves in a huge rugged pasture We got into some pretty adventurous situations but right then I could not take any photos, of course. The pics also don't show how cold it was ... and in between it snowed again as well. In the afternoon my cough started and since yesterday I have been laying in bed sick. Just in time for season's end.

Carol, Martina und Antje sind abgereist. Romina wird heute fahren und noch eine Tour durch den Yellowstone Park machen. In der Nebensaison ist es dort besonders schoen, aber man muss sich warm anziehen. Rita ist gerade dort, wird am Sonntag wiederkommen und am Montag fliegen fliegen. Bye, bye, Maedels! Hap ist bereits auf dem Weg ins warme Florida ... wir beneiden ihn.

Carol, Martina and Antje have left. Romina will leave today and take a trip to Yellowstone National Park. In off season it's especially beautiful but you have to put on some warm clothes. Rita is there right now, will come back on Sunday and fly home on Monday. Bye, bye, girls! Hap is already on his way to warm Florida ... we envy him.

Morgen soll es wieder warm werden und Nick und ich beim Rindertreiben bei einem Nachbarn helfen ... mal sehn, ob bis dahin mein Fieber weg ist.

Tomorrow it's supposed to get warm again and Nick and I are supposed to help a neighbor move cattle ... lets see if my fever is gone by then.

Was fuer eine Woche: Hochs und Tiefs ... nicht nur was das Wetter anging. Am Montag haben wir unsere Jaehrlingsrinder verladen, die den Winter ueber gemaestet und dann geschlachtet werden. Aufgrund der Duerre waren sie leider nicht so fett wie geplant, aber die Verluste hielten sich in Grenzen.

What a week: Ups and downs ... and not just weather-related ones. On Monday we shipped our yearling cattle which will be fattened up throughout the winter and then butchered. Due to the drought they were not as fat as planned but the losses weren' too bad.

Am Dienstag hatten wir Spass beim Team Penning ... in T-Shirts bei knapp 30 Grad. Dann kam Mittwoch mit Kaelte und Schnee. Irma, Rita, Nathalie, Vicki und Jan waren mit dem Auto unterwegs (Mount Rushmore, Deadwood, Shoppen etc.). Antje legte einen Ruhetag ein. Und drei neue Gaeste fanden die Ranch trotz Schneetreiben: Carmen, Antjes Freundin, sowie Carol and Martina aus England (Fotos im naechsten Blog).

On Tuesday we had fun team penning ... in T-Shirts and temps in the 80ies. Then Wednesday came, with frost and snow. Irma, Rita, Nathalie, Vicki and Jan took the car and went sightseeing (Mount Rushmore, Deadwood etc.) and shopping. Antje took a break. And three new guests managed to find the ranch despite snow flurries: Carmen, Antje's friend, as well as Carol and Martina from England (photos in the next blog).

Ich war am Mittwoch unterwegs, um Frost wieder zum Tierarzt zu bringen. Kurz nachdem wir die Antibiotika abgesetzt hatten, schwoll sein Bein wieder an. Auf der Autobahn versagte das Getriebe meines Pickups, und es dauerte Stunden, bis Hap mit seinem Truck kommen konnte, um den Pferdeanhaenger zu ziehen. (Nick war mit dem anderen Pickup unterwegs, um Antilopenjaeger zu fuehren.) Wir schafften es kurz vor Toresschluss zur Klinik. Frosts Huf war nicht mehr zu retten, der Koerper hatte ihn abgestossen. Ich musste ihn leider einschlaefern lassen. Ein furchtbarer Tag.

On Wednesday I went to town to bring Frost to the vet again. Shortly after we stopped the antibiotics, his leg started to swell again. On the Interstate my truck's transmission broke. It took hours for Hap to come out with his truck to pull the horse trailer. (Nick had the other truck to guide antelope hunters.) We managed to reach the clinic right before closing time. Frost's hoof could not be saved anymore. The body had rejected it. I had to make the decision to put Frost down. A terrible day.

Donnerstag lud uns unser Nachbar ein, mit seinen Bisons in der Praerie zu reiten (natuerlich mit Sicherheitsabstand): ein tolles Erlebnis. Und auch am Freitag sassen alle trotz Kaelte im Sattel. Freitagnacht war es richtig kalt (-10 Grad), aber am Samstagmorgen ging eine strahlende Sonne auf und tauchte die weiss bepuderte Landschaft in goldenes Licht.

Thursday our neighbor invited us to ride with his bisons in the prairie (with the necessary safety  distance, of course): an impressive experience. And on Friday everyone sat in the saddle again despite the cold. Friday night the temps were in the teens but on Saturday morning a beautiful sun rose and bathed the white landscape in a golden light.

Leider mussten Irma, Nathalie, Rita, Jan, Vicki und Carmen abreisen ... wir sehen uns naechstes Jahr wieder!

Unfortunately, Irma, Nathalie, Rita, Jan, Vicki and Carmen had to leave again ... we'll see you next year!

Heute haben wir unsere Rinder aus der unwegsamen Cottonwood-Weide direkt zur Ranch getrieben ... morgen werden sie mit grossen Trucks abgeholt. Die Weidesaison ist zu Ende. Vicki und Jan von der Isle of Man (Grossbritannien) hatten schon ein paar Tage, um sich an die Rinderarbeit zu gewoehnen. Irma, Nathalie und Rita aus Holland sowie Antje aus Deutschland mussten heute gleich ins kalte Wasser springen und in schwierigstem Gelaende ihre Sporen als Cowgirls verdienen.

Today we moved our cattle out of Cottonwood Pasture's difficult terrain towards the ranch ... tomorrow they will be shipped in big trucks. The grazing season is about to end. Vicki and Jan from the Isle of Man (Great Britain) already had a few days to practice cattle work. Irma, Nathalie and Rita from Holland and Antje from Germany had to jump into cold water today and earned their spurs as cowgirls in pretty tough country.

Ab Mittwoch soll es kalt werden und eventuell sogar schneien. "Kalt" glaube ich, aber die Niederschlaege werden sicher wieder unbemerkt an uns vorueberziehen.

On Wednesday it's supposed to get cold and maybe even snow. "Cold" I believe but the precipitation will probably move by again without us noticing.

Eine traurige Nachricht: Buddy, unser Hirschkalb, ist tot. Er wurde von einem Hund gejagt (nicht Gauge) und bekam epileptische Anfaelle, an denen er starb. Sabine, die Tieraerztin, die vergangene Woche hier war, meinte, dass Buddy wahrscheinlich eh irgendwann daran gestorben waere, aber ohne Stress haette er sicher noch laenger gelebt. Wo Tiere leben, sterben auch Tiere ... wir alle - insbesondere Lamm Hannah - vermissen Buddy und seine grossen Ohren :-(

Sad news: Buddy - our deer fawn - is dead. He was chased by a dog (not Gauge) and had epileptic seizures which killed him. Sabine, the vet who was here last week, said that he would have died of this anyway at some point but without stress he could have lived longer. Where animals live, animals die ... we all - especially lamb Hannah - miss Buddy and his big ears :-(

Die vergangenen Tage wurden wieder von Rinderarbeit bestimmt. Seit Mittwoch sind auch Lorraine aus Upstate New York und Matthias und Sabine aus Deutschland dabei. Dave und Doug arbeiten daran, wie richtige Cowboys auszusehen (Betonung auf "6-pack belly"), sonst lassen ihre Frauen die Beiden nicht nach Hause kommen. Und Iris ist mittlerweile tiefenentspannt.

The last few days saw a lot of cattle work again. On Wednesday, Lorraine from Upstate New York and Matthias and Sabine from Germany joined the guest team. Dave and Doug are working on looking like "real" cowboys (which means "6-pack bellies"), otherwise their wives won't let them come home. And Iris is more than relaxed.

Poco ist noch lahm, aber auf dem Weg der Besserung. Romina arbeitet fleissig mit Dun It, der sehr gut trainiert ist, aber im Gelaende noch einiges zu lernen hat. Und ich reite weiterhin Bruno, der grundsaetzlich willig, aber hin und wieder auch eigenwillig ist.

Poco is still lame but getting better. Romina is working with Dun It who is very well trained but needs more experience in our terrain. And I am still riding Bruno who is usually very willing but once in a while willful, too.

Ja, Buddy und Hannah geht es gut. Auch Gauge und den Katzen. Rita und Romina haben nicht mehr allzuviel Zeit in Wyoming uebrig und denken schon mit Wehmut an ihre Abreise. Unsere Saison endet am 13. Oktober ... und dann muss ich endlich mal die Webseite updaten.

Yes, Buddy and Hannah are fine. Gauge and the cats also. Rita and Romina don't have much time left in Wyoming and don't want to think about their departure. Our season ends October 13 ... and then I really have to update the webpage.

Brandy und ihre Familie werden auf eine Ranch in Jordan, Montana ziehen und nicht wieder nach Sued-Dakota zurueckkehren. Wir planen, sie an Weihnachten zu besuchen.

Brandy and her family are moving onto a ranch in Jordan, Montana and won't come back to South Dakota. We are planning on visiting them for Christmas.

Gaestewechsel am Samstag: Die alte Truppe ist weg, eine neue (s.o.) ist da. Das Wetter ist kuehl und sonnig, aber der Staub legt sich auf alles. Immer noch kein Regen in Sicht. Morgen werden wir unsere Rinder auf eine neue Koppel bringen muessen, das Gras wird knapp. Mehr im naechsten Blog.

Change of guests on Saturday: The old group left, a new one is here (see above). It's been getting cooler, still sunny and with dust everywhere. Still no rain in sight. Tomorrow we will move our cattle to a new pasture, there is little grass left. More in the next blog.

Der Herbst beginnt / Fall begins

Wir mussten Frost wieder in die Klinik bringen, da der Huf sich abzuloesen drohte, aber zum Glueck scheint es ihm wieder besser zu gehen, so dass wir ihn wieder abholen koennen. Hier ist das aufgrund der weiten Entfernungen ja immer sehr zeitintensiv: Die Klinik ist zwei Stunden entfernt.

We had to drive Frost into the clinic again since his hoof was about to fall off. Luckily he got better against all odds and we can pick him up again. Due to the long distances here this always involves a lot of time: The clinic is two hours away.

Melissa ist wieder in England, und heute sind auch Klaus, Carola und Ralf abgereist. Es ist zwar immer noch knochentrocken, aber die Temperaturen werden langsam herbstlich (insbesondere nachts), und die Laubbaeume verfaerben sich.

Melissa is back in England and today Klaus, Carola and Ralf left as well. It is still very dry but the temperatures are getting cooler (especially at night) and the trees are changing color.

Gestern haben wir einem Nachbarn bei einem Branding geholfen (ich "durfte" kastrieren), heute steht Team Penning an. Und Nick und Mike sitzen auf unserem Dach und machen Laerm (hoffe, dass die Arbeiten bald beendet sind).

Yesterday we helped a neighbor with a branding (I was "allowed" to castrate), today team penning is on the agenda. And Nick and Mike are sitting on our roof and create a lot of noise (hopefully they will be done soon with the work).
