Die Neuen: Dun It und Poco / The new ones: Dun It and Poco

Wir mussten Frost wieder in die Klinik bringen, da der Huf sich abzuloesen drohte, aber zum Glueck scheint es ihm wieder besser zu gehen, so dass wir ihn wieder abholen koennen. Hier ist das aufgrund der weiten Entfernungen ja immer sehr zeitintensiv: Die Klinik ist zwei Stunden entfernt.

We had to drive Frost into the clinic again since his hoof was about to fall off. Luckily he got better against all odds and we can pick him up again. Due to the long distances here this always involves a lot of time: The clinic is two hours away.

Melissa ist wieder in England, und heute sind auch Klaus, Carola und Ralf abgereist. Es ist zwar immer noch knochentrocken, aber die Temperaturen werden langsam herbstlich (insbesondere nachts), und die Laubbaeume verfaerben sich.

Melissa is back in England and today Klaus, Carola and Ralf left as well. It is still very dry but the temperatures are getting cooler (especially at night) and the trees are changing color.

Gestern haben wir einem Nachbarn bei einem Branding geholfen (ich "durfte" kastrieren), heute steht Team Penning an. Und Nick und Mike sitzen auf unserem Dach und machen Laerm (hoffe, dass die Arbeiten bald beendet sind).

Yesterday we helped a neighbor with a branding (I was "allowed" to castrate), today team penning is on the agenda. And Nick and Mike are sitting on our roof and create a lot of noise (hopefully they will be done soon with the work).

Buddy (Kitz) und Hannah (Lamm) vermissen ihre Mama (Lisa). Vielleicht kann Lisas Vater ja einen Flug nach Deutschland organisieren, damit die Beiden die Frankfurter Gegend unsicher machen koennen. Lisa, kauf schon mal Milch und Leckerlies!

Die vergangenen Tage gab es wieder viel Rinderarbeit zu erledigen. Neben Klaus, Carola und Melissa helfen uns diese Woche dabei: Dagmar, Joerg, Jim, Darcy, Charlott und Frida (Friederike). Und Ralf macht sich in der Kueche unentbehrlich. Heute abend gibt es Forellen aus dem New Haven See.

The last few days we have had a lot of cattle work again. Next to Klaus, Carola and Melissa these guys are helping us this week as well: Dagmar, Joerg, Jim, Darcy, Charlott and Frida (Friederike). And Ralf becomes indispensible in the kitchen. Tonight he is cooking trout out of the New Haven lake.

Pferde: Gordo (der leider zum Bocken neigt) ist an einen Nachbar verkauft. Meine geliebte, aber chronisch lahme Stella habe ich gegen Poco eingetauscht, einen suessen kleinen Bay Roan Dun-Wallach. Stella soll nun Zuchtstute werden. Pearl, die leider ein bisschen zu schnell fuer das Gros unserer Gaeste ist, geht wahrscheinlich nach Chicago. Und fuer Chuck (neurologisches Wirbelsaeulenproblem) habe ich zum Glueck auch schon ein neues gutes Heim gefunden. Am Sonntag haben Nick und ich dann noch Dun It gekauft, einen kleinen Buckskin Dun-Wallach mit viel Talent. Ein Foto von Poco und Dun It, die schon die besten Freunde sind, gibt es im naechsten Blog.

Horses: Gordo (who tends to buck) has been sold to a neighbor. I traded my beloved but chronically lame Stella for Poco, a cute little bay roan dun gelding. Stella is now becoming a brood mare. Pearl who is a bit too quick for most of our guests will probably go to Chicago. And I have already found a good new home for Chuck who has a neurological spinal problem. On Sunday Nick and I bought Dun It, a small buckskin dun gelding with lots of talent. A photo of Poco and Dun It who are already best friends will follow in the next blog.

Nach Indy (oben mit Jim) und Chica (unten mit Anke) haben wir nun ein drittes neues Pferd in diesem Herbst erworben: Pearl, eine huebsche junge Rappstute mit Tempo, die noch ein bisschen Training braucht. Indy ist auch noch in der Ausbildung, besticht aber schon jetzt mit einem sehr ausgeglichenen Temperament. Chica ist ein gut ausgebildetes Ranchpferd mit viel Go.

After Indy (above with Jim) and Chica (below with Anke) we now got a third new horse this fall: Pearl, a pretty young black mare with speed who still needs some training. Indy is also still in training but already shows a very easy going disposition. Chica is a well trained ranch horse with lots of Go.

Reiten, schiessen, ropen und mehr / Riding, shooting, roping and more

Seit Anthony weg ist, muss ich die Pferdehufe trimmen. Am Anfang habe ich gerade mal ein Pferd am Tag geschafft, jetzt schon bis zu vier. Nick hilft zwar manchmal, aber da wir jedes Pferd zweimal im Monat trimmen, ist immer noch genug zu tun. Meine Unterarme bekommen Muckis ;-)

Since Anthony has left, I have to trim hooves. In the beginning I only managed one horse a day, now up to four. Nick helps once in a while but since we want to trim every horse twice a month, I still have enough to do. My lower arms get really strong ;-)

War gestern auch mit unserer Truppe reiten: Petra auf Pep, Carlotta auf Chocolate, Heidi auf Classy, Anke auf Chica und Anne auf Patch (v.l.n.r.). Ich hatte mal wieder meine Geheimwaffe: Romes.

Yesterday I went riding with our gang: Petra on Pep, Carlotta on Chocolate, Heidi on Classy, Anke on Chica and Anne on Patch (from left to right). I had my secret weapon again: Romes.

Zwischendurch hat Nick Unterricht im Schiessen erteilt. Die arme Anne: Das Gewehr ist so lang wie sie ;-) Heidi und Petra scheinen Naturtalente zu sein. Carlotta hat stattdessen lieber Ropen geuebt ... Fotos folgen.

In between Nick taught everyone how to shoot. Poor Anne: The rifle is as long as she is ;-) Heidi and Petra showed natural talent. Carlotta practiced roping instead ... photos will follow.

Nick haelt Jim und Alden mit Holz- und Metallarbeiten beschaeftigt ... nicht dass die Beiden auf den Gedanken kommen, sie wuerden hier Urlaub machen :-)

Gestern abend haben wir zum letzten Mal (in diesem Jahr) am See gegrillt. Nick und ich waren allerdings unterwegs, um ein bestimmtes Medikament fuer "Lucky Dan" bei Nachbarn abzuholen. Dan hat kaum Muttermilch erhalten (und damit kein Kollostrum), weshalb er jetzt fuer Krankheiten anfaellig ist. Drueckt die Daumen!

Yesterday evening we BBQed at the lake for the last time (this year). Nick and I, though were on our way to the neighbors to pick up a special drug for "Lucky Dan". Dan did not get much milk from his mother and thus no collostrum which is why he is now more prone to get infections. Keep your fingers crossed!

Die naechste Generation / The next generation

Waehrend wir Red leider nicht retten konnten (ganz unten, letzter Rettungs-versuch), gedeiht die naechste Generation, sprich "Lucky Dan" (ebenfalls s.u.), gut. Oben ein Foto von Silvia auf Grover, Carlotta auf Tucker, Heidi auf Buster, Anne auf Chocolate, Petra auf Tramp, Dominik auf Jet und Heike auf Indy (drauf klicken zum Vergroessern).

Silvia und Dominik sind aus der Schweiz, Heidi und Carlotta aus meiner Heimatstadt Schleswig in Norddeutschland. Heidi ist meine Cousine (so ungefaehr), und Carlotta ist ihre Tochter. Viele Gruesse an Frank und Anna Lena, die zu Hause bleiben mussten!

Silvia and Dominik are from Switzerland, Heidi and Carlotta from my home town Schleswig in Northern Germany. Heidi is my cousin (sort of) and Carlotta is her daughter. Greetings to Frank and Anna Lena who had to stay home!

Petra und Anne fuehlen sich auch auf dem Quad gut (s.u.). Ach ja, Nicks langjaehriger Freund Jim aus Nebraska (hi, Elaine) und sein Freund Alden sind auch auf Besuch (unten vor dem Truck).
