Nick trimmt Lefties Tellerhufe / Nick is trimming Leftie's plate-size hooves

Vor unserem Urlaub hat Nick schon 20 Pferde getrimmt ... jetzt kommen die naechsten 20 dran. Bin ich froh, dass ich das nicht machen muss !!! Die meisten Pferde benehmen sich gut, obwohl Ausnahmen die Regel bestaetigen. Ich nenne jetzt keine Namen ;-)

Before our vacation Nick had already trimmed 20 horses ... now he is starting on the next 20. Am I glad that I don't have to do it !!! Most of the horses behave well even though there are exceptions. I am not going to mention any names ;-)

Waehrend ich versuche, der Buero- und Hausarbeit wieder Herr (Frau) zu werden, laedt Nick taeglich Heu, das nach Colorado und Texas geht. Tav will Mitte Maerz zurueckkommen. Arbeit gibt es genug. Und im April reisen dann auch die ersten Saisonkraefte an: rechtzeitig zur Truthahnjagdsaison.

While I am trying to catch up with office and house work, Nick is loading hay every day which goes to Colorado and Texas. Tav will come back mid March. There is plenty of work. And in April the first seasonal help will arrive: just in time for turkey hunting season.

Wir haben unsere Jaherlingsrinder, die noch im Feedlot sind, bereits vertraglich verkauft und einen sehr guten Preis erzielt. Natuerlich bleiben die Rinder den ganzen Sommer auf der Ranch und sollen sich fett fressen, bevor sie wieder verladen werden.

We have already contracted our yearling cattle which are still in the feedlot. We got a very good price. The cattle will stay on the ranch all summer to get fat before they are shipped again.

Wen es interessiert: Wir sind bis 11. Juli ausgebucht ... nur in der Woche vom 2. bis 9. Juni gibt es noch Plaetze, eigentlich eine tolle Zeit, weil dann Brandings stattfinden (allerdings ohne Garantie). Auch der September fuellt sich langsam, aber sicher.

To whom it may concern: We are booked out till July 11 ... there are only a few openings from June 2 to 9 left. An exciting time because of the brandings (no guarantee, though). September is also filling up.

Waehrend wir in Europa waren, haben wir hier den zweiwoechigen Winter mit viel Schnee verpasst. Jetzt ist es schon wieder recht warm und sonnig. Unser Nachbar Randy durfte sich mit der Arbeit im Schnee herumschlagen, dafuer hat Nicks Mutter JoAnn ihn bekocht. Gauge und Penny sind dank Randys Futter (Milch und Braten) unglaublich fett geworden und sind nun - wie auch Nick und ich - auf Diaet.

While we were in Europe, we missed the two weeks of winter with lots of snow. Now it is pretty warm and sunny again. Our neighbor Randy had to deal with all the work in the snow but Nick's mother JoAnn cooked for him. Gauge and Penny got really fat thanks to Randy's feeding (milk and roast). They - as well as Nick and I - are on a diet now.

Die Temperaturen sinken rapide ... der erste Blizzard dieses Winters ist im Anmarsch. Immerhin: Wir haben bisher mit dem Wetter in diesem Herbst Glueck gehabt.

The temperature is dropping fast ... the first blizzard of this winter is approaching. We have had luck with the fall weather so far.

Gestern habe ich Tav und Romina zur Stadt gefahren: Tav hat den Bus Richtung Ostkueste genommen, um Familie zu besuchen, und hat uns Penny hier gelassen. Romina ist in den Flieger Richtung Deutschland gestiegen. Jetzt sind nur noch Nick, Anke, Tom und ich auf der Ranch ... und stetig wechselnde Jaegergruppen.

Yesterday I drove Tav and Romina to town: Tav took a bus to the East Coast to visit family and left Penny here. Romina took the plane back to Germany. Now it's just Nick, Anke, Tom and I on the ranch ... and changing groups of hunters.

Brandy und ihre Familie sind da, um morgen Emmetts 5. Geburtstag mit uns zu feiern. Und am Montag haben Nick und ich 5. Hochzeitstag ... wow!

Brandy and her family are here to celebrate Emmett's 5th birthday with us tomorrow. And on Monday Nick and I will have our 5th anniversary ... wow!

Hier seht Ihr Familie Dalton mit Emmett auf Viento, der schlicht und einfach nicht interessiert aussehen wollte. Dabei ist dies das offizielle Weihnachtsphoto. Was mich daran erinnert, dass Nick und ich noch keines haben ...

Nick will diese Woche das allmonatliche Hufetrimmen beenden - 32 Pferde und ein Esel sind eine ganze Menge Tiere. Naja, Brandy trimmt ihre beiden Pferde (Viento und Bo) und ich meine vier (Doc, Stella, Vegas und Jazz), aber da bleiben immer noch genuegend uebrig. Unten seht Ihr Nick mit Chocolate. Rena wartet schon ganz ungeduldig, denn jedes Pferd, das getrimmt wird, bekommt eine Portion Futter ... da hebt Rena gern die Fuesse fuer eine Pedikuere.

Nick wants to finish the monthly hoof trimming marathon - 32 horse and one donkey are a lot of animals. Well, Brandy trims her two (Viento and Bo) and I my four (Doc, Stella, Vegas and Jazz) but there are still enough left. Below you see Nick with Chocolate. Rena is waiting impatiently because every horse which gets trimmed also gets a ration of feed ... Rena is very happy to lift her feet for a pedicure.

Reiten, schiessen, ropen und mehr / Riding, shooting, roping and more

Seit Anthony weg ist, muss ich die Pferdehufe trimmen. Am Anfang habe ich gerade mal ein Pferd am Tag geschafft, jetzt schon bis zu vier. Nick hilft zwar manchmal, aber da wir jedes Pferd zweimal im Monat trimmen, ist immer noch genug zu tun. Meine Unterarme bekommen Muckis ;-)

Since Anthony has left, I have to trim hooves. In the beginning I only managed one horse a day, now up to four. Nick helps once in a while but since we want to trim every horse twice a month, I still have enough to do. My lower arms get really strong ;-)

War gestern auch mit unserer Truppe reiten: Petra auf Pep, Carlotta auf Chocolate, Heidi auf Classy, Anke auf Chica und Anne auf Patch (v.l.n.r.). Ich hatte mal wieder meine Geheimwaffe: Romes.

Yesterday I went riding with our gang: Petra on Pep, Carlotta on Chocolate, Heidi on Classy, Anke on Chica and Anne on Patch (from left to right). I had my secret weapon again: Romes.

Zwischendurch hat Nick Unterricht im Schiessen erteilt. Die arme Anne: Das Gewehr ist so lang wie sie ;-) Heidi und Petra scheinen Naturtalente zu sein. Carlotta hat stattdessen lieber Ropen geuebt ... Fotos folgen.

In between Nick taught everyone how to shoot. Poor Anne: The rifle is as long as she is ;-) Heidi and Petra showed natural talent. Carlotta practiced roping instead ... photos will follow.

Nick haelt Jim und Alden mit Holz- und Metallarbeiten beschaeftigt ... nicht dass die Beiden auf den Gedanken kommen, sie wuerden hier Urlaub machen :-)

Nick keeps Jim and Alden busy with wood and metal work ... God forbid the two of them think they are on vacation :-)

Gestern abend haben wir zum letzten Mal (in diesem Jahr) am See gegrillt. Nick und ich waren allerdings unterwegs, um ein bestimmtes Medikament fuer "Lucky Dan" bei Nachbarn abzuholen. Dan hat kaum Muttermilch erhalten (und damit kein Kollostrum), weshalb er jetzt fuer Krankheiten anfaellig ist. Drueckt die Daumen!

Yesterday evening we BBQed at the lake for the last time (this year). Nick and I, though were on our way to the neighbors to pick up a special drug for "Lucky Dan". Dan did not get much milk from his mother and thus no collostrum which is why he is now more prone to get infections. Keep your fingers crossed!

Sonntagsbeschaeftigungen / Sunday activities

Es war kein fauler, aber ein ruhiger Sonntag. Nick und ich sind erst um 8 Uhr aufgestanden. Waehrend er neue Jaeger gefuehrt hat, habe ich Emails und Anrufe beantwortet. Dann sind wir fencen gegangen (in diesem Fall einen Elektrozaun aufbauen, s.u.). Ich habe spaeter die Pferde reingeholt und Stellas und Vegas Hufe getrimmt und die Sattelkammer aufgeraeumt. Es ist zwar erst 18 Uhr, aber ich werde heute nichts mehr tun und auch die Unordnung im Haus einen weiteren Tag ignorieren ;-)

It wasn't a lazy but a quiet Sunday. Nick and I did not get up till 8 am. He guided new hunters while I answered emails and phone calls. Then we went fencing (put up electrical fence, see below). Later I brought the horses in and trimmed Stella's and Vegas' hooves and cleaned up the saddle shed. It's just 6 am but I will call it a day and ignore the mess in our house for another day ;-)

Kurz bevor ich nach Hause ging, zog ein Schauer durch ... und ein Regenbogen blieb.

Shortly before I went home, a shower came thru ... and a rainbow stayed.
