Nick trimmt Lefties Tellerhufe / Nick is trimming Leftie's plate-size hooves

Vor unserem Urlaub hat Nick schon 20 Pferde getrimmt ... jetzt kommen die naechsten 20 dran. Bin ich froh, dass ich das nicht machen muss !!! Die meisten Pferde benehmen sich gut, obwohl Ausnahmen die Regel bestaetigen. Ich nenne jetzt keine Namen ;-)

Before our vacation Nick had already trimmed 20 horses ... now he is starting on the next 20. Am I glad that I don't have to do it !!! Most of the horses behave well even though there are exceptions. I am not going to mention any names ;-)

Waehrend ich versuche, der Buero- und Hausarbeit wieder Herr (Frau) zu werden, laedt Nick taeglich Heu, das nach Colorado und Texas geht. Tav will Mitte Maerz zurueckkommen. Arbeit gibt es genug. Und im April reisen dann auch die ersten Saisonkraefte an: rechtzeitig zur Truthahnjagdsaison.

While I am trying to catch up with office and house work, Nick is loading hay every day which goes to Colorado and Texas. Tav will come back mid March. There is plenty of work. And in April the first seasonal help will arrive: just in time for turkey hunting season.

Wir haben unsere Jaherlingsrinder, die noch im Feedlot sind, bereits vertraglich verkauft und einen sehr guten Preis erzielt. Natuerlich bleiben die Rinder den ganzen Sommer auf der Ranch und sollen sich fett fressen, bevor sie wieder verladen werden.

We have already contracted our yearling cattle which are still in the feedlot. We got a very good price. The cattle will stay on the ranch all summer to get fat before they are shipped again.

Wen es interessiert: Wir sind bis 11. Juli ausgebucht ... nur in der Woche vom 2. bis 9. Juni gibt es noch Plaetze, eigentlich eine tolle Zeit, weil dann Brandings stattfinden (allerdings ohne Garantie). Auch der September fuellt sich langsam, aber sicher.

To whom it may concern: We are booked out till July 11 ... there are only a few openings from June 2 to 9 left. An exciting time because of the brandings (no guarantee, though). September is also filling up.

Waehrend wir in Europa waren, haben wir hier den zweiwoechigen Winter mit viel Schnee verpasst. Jetzt ist es schon wieder recht warm und sonnig. Unser Nachbar Randy durfte sich mit der Arbeit im Schnee herumschlagen, dafuer hat Nicks Mutter JoAnn ihn bekocht. Gauge und Penny sind dank Randys Futter (Milch und Braten) unglaublich fett geworden und sind nun - wie auch Nick und ich - auf Diaet.

While we were in Europe, we missed the two weeks of winter with lots of snow. Now it is pretty warm and sunny again. Our neighbor Randy had to deal with all the work in the snow but Nick's mother JoAnn cooked for him. Gauge and Penny got really fat thanks to Randy's feeding (milk and roast). They - as well as Nick and I - are on a diet now.

Und die Hunde sind erschoepft (wovon?) / And the dogs are exhausted (from what?)

Ranchhunde - ein hartes Leben / Ranch dogs - a hard life

So ein Hundeleben ist hart. / A dog's life is hard.

Jeden Morgen, wenn ich das Haus verlasse, werde ich von drei vollkommen unnuetzen Hunden begruesst. Da ist Wachhund Jenny, die nachts Schafe, Ziegen und Gefluegel vor Raubtieren schuetzen soll, stattdessen aber auf unserer Veranda schnarcht. Als Nick mich in den Schnee warf, wedelte sie nur freundlich mit dem Schwanz. Wenn Nick ein Bergloewe gewesen waere, wuerdet Ihr diesen Blog hier nicht mehr lesen koennen. Dann Huetehund Billie, der sich auf Maschinen verlegt hat und den ganzen Tag das Quad hypnotisiert ... wenn er nicht gerade mit seinem gammeligen alten Hirschfell durch die Gegend hetzt, das schwerer ist als er selbst. Und natuerlich Jagdhund Gauge, der nichts mehr vom Toeten haelt und sich stattdessen mit Katzen verbruedert. Er verbringt seine Tage mit Schlafen, Fressen und ein bisschen Spielen. Doch unsere Gaeste fallen natuerlich auf den herzzerreissenden Blick (s. oben) herein ... ich auch. Bleibt nur, dass unsere Hunde unsere Gesundheit foerdern: Wer lacht, lebt laenger.

Every morning when I leave the house, three absolutely useless dogs are greeting me. There is guard dog Jenny who is supposed to protect sheep, goats and poultry at night from predators but instead snores on our porch. When Nick pushed me into the snow, she just wagged her tail. If Nick had been a mountain lion, you would not be able to read this blog anymore. Then herding dog Billie who specializes in machinery and hypnotizes the 4-wheeler all day ... when he is not running around with his old ripped deer skin which is heavier than he is. And of course hunting dog Gauge who dislikes killing and now even fraternizes with cats. He spends his days with sleeping, eating and a little play. But our guests fall for his heart-breaking expression (s. above) ... and I do, too. What's left is that our dogs are probably contributing to our good health: People who laugh, live longer.
