Herbst - ist es wirklich schon so spaet? / Fall - is it really that late?

Viehtrieb im Herbst / Cattle drive in fall

Am Donnerstag - einen Tag vor dem ersten Schnee dieses Herbstes - haben wir alle Rinder zur Ranch getrieben. Die Kaelber wurden von den Kuehen getrennt und gegen ansteckende Krankheiten geimpft. Sie werden in etwa einem Monat verkauft und den Winter ueber gemaestet. Der Kaeufer verlangt die Impfungen, man spricht von "pre-conditioning". Im naechsten Sommer kommen die Kaelber dann als Jaehrlinge wieder auf Weide - allerdings nicht bei uns. Wir behalten unsere Kuehe, die von den Bullen gedeckt wurden und im Fruehling wieder Kaelber bekommen.

On Thursday - one day before the first snow of this fall - we moved all cattle to the ranch. The calves were separated from the cows and vaccinated against contagious deseases. In about one month they will be sold and fattened in feedlots over the winter. The buyer requires the vaccinations, it's called "preconditioning". Next summer the calves will be out on pasture again, then as yearlings. But not on our place. We keep our cows which have been bred by the bulls and will have calves again next spring.

Mittlerweile ist es wieder mild, aber der Herbst hat endgueltig Einzug gehalten. Samstag sind Karina aus der Schweiz und Jenny aus England angereist. Waehrend die diesjaehrige Saison langsam dem Ende zugeht, sind wir schon fleissig am Buchen fuer naechstes Jahr. Falls Ihr (wieder)kommen wollt, wartet nicht zu lange ... insbesondere Juni wird schnell voll. Die Preise werden sich uebrigens - bis auf den Flughafentransfer - nicht aendern.

In the meantime it has been become mild again but fall is here to stay. Saturday Karina from Switzerland and Jenny from England arrived. And while this season is slowly closing, we are already busy booking for next year. If you want to come (again), don't wait too long ... especially June will be full soon. The rates will stay the same with the exception of the airport transfer.  

P.S. Angelica kommt uebrigens nicht aus Norwegen, sondern aus Schweden ;-)

Am Mittwoch reiste Thomas (aus Deutschland) an, am Samstag Irma und Margret (aus Holland) sowie Sarah und Sharon (aus England). Zusammen mit Kathrin, Hubert, Maggie und Alex haben wir eine Pferdeauktion besucht ... aber kein Pferd gekauft. Wir sind zu oft bei Auktionen hereingelegt worden. Hier im Wilden Westen gibt es keine Kaeufergarantie!

On Wednesday Thomas (German) arrived, on Saturday Irma and Margret (Dutch) as well as Sarah and Sharon (English). Together with Kathrin, Hubert, Maggie and Alex we all went to a horse sale on Saturday ... but we did not buy a horse. We have been tricked too often at auctions. There is not buyer's guarantee in the Wild West! 

Als Lance am Sonntagmorgen mit den Neuankoemmlingen die Einfuehrung machte, bin ich mit den anderen auf einen "aussichtsreichen" Ausritt gegangen. Es war sonnig, aber kuehl und stuermisch ... mein Lieblingswetter. Und fuers Reiten ideal!

When Lance did the introduction with the "newbies" on Sunday morning, I took the others on a "ride with a view". It was sunny but cool and windy ... my favorite weather. And perfect for riding!

Ich werde in den naechsten Tagen noch ein paar Fotos von unseren Gaesten "stehlen" und einen ausfuehrlicheren Blog online stellen. Was sonst noch geschah: Am Freitag sind wir alle tanzen gegangen, am Samstag ist eine unterirdische Wasserleitung gebrochen, die Nick mit Hilfe von Nachbar Ken reparieren konnte, am Sonntag hatten dann fast alle Gaeste und Mitarbeiter eine Erkaeltung ... wir haben Rinder geschoben und Zaeune auf- und abgebaut ... und unsere Haeuser sind nun alle frisch gestrichen.

During the next few days I will "steal" some more photos from the guests and put a more detailed blog online. What else happened: On Friday we all went dancing, on Saturday an underground water line broke but Nick and neighbor Ken could fix it, by Sunday most of the guests and employees had a cold ... we moved cattle and put up and down fence ... and all the houses have been painted. 

Morgen werden uns Huebert und Kathrin verlassen, dafuer hole ich Laraine aus Grossbritannien vom Flughafen ab.  

Tomorrow Hubert and Kathrin will leave us. I am picking up Laraine (from Great Britain) from the airport.

Der Herbst geht, der Winter kommt / Fall is ending, winter is coming

Der Herbst - wie die Antilopen-jagdsaison - geht seinem Ende zu. Wir hoffen zwar noch auf ein paar milde Tage im November (der Hirschjagdsaison), aber als ich heute mit dem Quad unterwegs war, um Salzbloecke zu den Pferden und Kuehen zu bringen, flogen mir die ersten Schneeflocken ins Gesicht.

Fall - as well as the antelope hunting season - is ending. We are still hoping for a few mild days in November (which is deer hunting season) but when I brought out salt blocks today on the 4-wheeler for the horses and cows, the first snow flakes were hitting me.

Am Sonntag waren Nick und ich in Rapid City, um im Baumarkt (wo auch sonst) Teile fuer die neue Abwasserleitung zu kaufen. Nachmittags haben Nick und Anke alles ausgemessen (Gefaelle etc.). Montag haben wir alle die Leitungen gelegt, alles wieder mit Erde bedeckt und den umgebenden Zaun geflickt. Dann hiess es in eisigem Sturm ueber 200 Heuballen zu laden, die wir dann heute morgen zu Carolina und Greg gebracht haben, die Futter fuer die Ziegen brauchten.

On Sunday Nick and I were in Rapid City to buy parts for the new sewer line at Menards (where else). In the afternoon Nick and Anke surveyed the area. On Monday we all put in the pipes, covered them again with dirt and fixed the surrounding fence. Then we had to load more than 200 hay bales in an icy storm. This morning we brought the hay over to Carolina and Greg who need it for their goats.

Ach ja, ueber Antilopen, genauer gesagt: Pronghorns, habe ich schon mal geschrieben, einfach Suchfunktion nutzen.

By the way, I already wrote about antelopes, to be exact: pronghorns, just use the search function.

Es ist immer noch sehr warm, aber viel stiller, als es im Sommer ist. Gauge und ich sind heute einfach eine Stunde auf unserer Porch gesessen und haben in die Landschaft geguckt ... kaum mehr Gruen, dafuer alle Schattierungen von Rot, Gelb und Brauntoenen.

It is still very warm but a lot more quiet than in summer. Gauge and I just sat on the porch for an hour watching the landscape ... less green and much more red, yellow and shades of brown.

Lisa und Diane sind abgereist, Petra und Anne (aus Deutschland) sind angekommen. Unsere Antilopenjaeger, James und LeRoy, haben ihre Boecke geschossen und waren heute Forellenfischen. Nick und Shannon, unser neuer Schreiner, sind dabei, das Lodge-Dach fertig zu decken. Die "Maedels" - Heike, Anke, Petra und Anne - sind reiten.

Lisa and Diane have left, Petra and Anne arrived (from Germany). Our antilope hunters, James and LeRoy, shot their bucks and are trout fishing today. Nick and Shannon, our new carpenter, are about to finish shingling the lodge roof. The "girls" - Heike, Anke, Petra and Anne - are out riding.

Anbei ein Bild von Bernadette, unserem Beefalo-Kalb ... sie hat sich sehr veraendert und sieht nun wirklich seltsam aus ... nicht wirklich Bueffel und nicht wirklich Kuh.

Indianersommer / Indian summer

Tja, man kann es nicht mehr uebersehen, der Herbst ist eingekehrt. Leider verfaerbt sich das Laub hier schneller als z.B. an der amerikanischen Ostkueste, da Tage und Naechte schnell kuehler werden. Ausserdem gibt es hier viel mehr Nadelbaeume als Laubbaeume, letztere meist in Flussniederungen. Trotzdem ist der Herbst neben Fruehling meine Lieblingsjahreszeit ... er ist weder zu heiss noch zu kalt ;-)

Yes, it's obvious, fall has arrived. Unfortunately, the leaves will change color faster than i.e. on the American East coast because the days and nights turn colder faster. In addition to that we have far more conifers than broadleaves, latter ones mostly in creek bottoms. Nevertheless, fall is next to spring my favorite season ... it's neither too warm nor too cold ;-)

Brandings im Herbst / Fall brandings

Im November halfen wir unserem Nachbarn Ken (ganz rechts) beim Branding seiner Herbst-Kaelber. Nick (auf K.C.) hat gerade eines mit dem Rope aus dem Korral gezogen. Denis (aus Schwaben) und unser Nachbar Mark (vorne) halten es am Boden, damit das Brandzeichen gesetzt werden kann. Ausserdem werden die Tiere geimpft ... und ich naehere mich gerade mit einem Messer, um die maennlichen Kaelber zu kastrieren. Ein paar Minuten Schmerz fuer ein relativ freies, wenn auch kurzes Leben. Die Kaelber laufen sechs Monate mit Mama auf der Weide, danach fuer ein weiteres Jahr mit Gleichaltrigen, bevor sie mit knapp zwei Jahren in die Schlachtung gehen. Das sind dann die leckeren Angus-Steaks auf Euren Tellern. Bis dahin hat kein Tier ein Gebaeude von innen gesehen.

In November, we helped our neighbor Ken (right) brand his fall calves. Nick (on K.C.) has just roped one. Denis (from Germany) and our neighbor Mark (in front) are holding it to the ground so it can be branded. The animals get vaccinated as well ... and I am about to castrate the calf with a knife. A few minutes of pain for a relatively free even if short life. The calves run six months with mama, after that for another year with their buddies before they get butchered at close to two years of age. We are talking about the delicious Angus steaks on your plates. Till then none of the animals has seen a building from inside.

Die meisten Brandings finden im Fruehling statt, weil die meisten Kaelber im Fruehling geboren werden. Warum also ein Herbst-Branding? Vorteil: Ken kann seine Kaelber antizyklisch auf dem Markt anbieten (geringeres Angebot) und damit hoehere Preise erzielen. Die Kaelber werden im August und September geboren, also in besserem Wetter, weniger Tiere sterben in Schneestuermen (als im Maerz und April). Und fuer einen Rancher wie ihn, der weder Arbeitskraefte noch Familie auf der Ranch hat, ist es wesentlich praktischer. Denn im Fruehjahr muss ja auch gefarmt, sprich die Saat auf die Felder ausgebracht werden. Nachteil: Wenn die Kuehe im Winter gedeckt werden (damit sie 9 1/2 Monate spaeter kalben), ist ihre Empfaengnisbereitschaft niedriger (kein gruenes Gras, mehr Kaelte). Ausserdem muessen Kuehe und Kaelber im Winter gefuettert werden, was teurer ist, und die Kaelber nehmen trotzdem nicht so viel zu wie im Sommer, ganz einfach, weil das Tageslicht fehlt und Mutter Natur sich das so nicht ausgedacht hat.

Most brandings are in spring because most calves are born in spring. Why a fall branding? Advantage: Ken can sell his calves when there are less on the market and thus he can get higher prices. The calves are born in better weather (August and September) than spring calves (March and April) and more survive. And for someone like Ken who works his ranch alone without family and employees it's more practical. In spring he also has to farm, i.e. put seed on the fields. Disadvantage: To have calves in late summer, the cows need to be bred in winter (it takes 9 1/2 months) when it's cold and there is no green grass. More cows will be open. Both cows and calves have to be fed a lot of hay and cake which is more expensive. And the calves still don't gain as much as in summer because there is less daylight and Mother Nature just has different intentions.
