Anfang November haben wir unsere Kaelber verkauft, die nun den Winter ueber gemaestet werden und im kommenden Sommer mit Gleichaltrigen wieder auf Weide gehen, bevor sie nach einem weiteren Mast-Winter geschlachtet werden. Die Kuehe wurden mit Ultraschall auf Schwangerschaft getestet, und die traechtigen Kuehe wurden verladen, um den Winter in der Praerie Montanas zu verbringen, bevor sie im Fruehling wieder zu uns kommen. Die nicht traechtigen Kuehe wurden verkauft. Nur die Bullen und unsere Longhornrinder bleiben den Winter ueber auf New Haven. Und natuerlich die Pferde, die nach einer langen arbeitsreichen Saison den Winterurlaub geniessen.

In the beginning of November we sold our calves. They will be fed this winter and turned out to pasture again with other yearlings next spring before going into a feedlot again the winter after till they are butchered. The cows were checked for pregnancy (using ultrasound). The pregnant cows were shipped to spend the winter in the prairie of Montana before returning to our ranch in spring. The open cows were sold. Just the bulls and the longhorn cattle will spend the winter on the ranch. And the horses, of course which are enjoying their winter vacation after a long and busy season.

Nach wenigen Tagen wurde es bitterkalt (bis zu 30 Grad minus), nicht nur ein Schock fuer uns und die Tiere, sondern auch fuer unsere Jaeger, die im November Hirsche und Antilopen (Pronghorn) jagen. Jaeger uebernehmen in den USA im gewissen Sinne die Funktion von Foerstern. So vergibt der Staat Wyoming z.B. eine bestimmte Anzahl von Lizenzen, fuer die sich Jaeger gegen eine Gebuehr bewerben koennen. Man versucht auf diesem Wege, die Anzahl der Wildtiere zu kontrollieren. Denn natuerlich gibt es nicht mehr so viele Raubtiere wie frueher. In unserer Gegend haben wir zwar viele Bergloewen, Koyoten und Adler, aber - zurzeit noch - wenige Baeren und Woelfe. Die meisten Jaeger schiessen die Tiere nicht nur wegen der Trophae, sondern auch wegen des Fleisches.

A few days into the month it became terribly cold (down to minus 25 Fahrenheit/minus 30 Celsius) which was not only a shock for us and the animals but also for our hunters who hunt deer and antelope (pronghorn) in November. Hunters in a way act as rangers as they are known in Europe. The state of Wyoming i.e. offers a certain amount of licenses which hunters can apply for (against a fee). Thus, one wants to manage the number of game since there are not that many predators anymore. In our area we still have a bunch of mountain lions, coyotes and eagles but - at least right now - few bears and wolves. Most of the hunters shoot the animals not just for the trophy but also for the meat. 

Der Monat endete mit dem Thanksgiving-Fest, dem wohl wichtigsten Familienfest in den USA. Nick, seine Mutter JoAnn und ich waren zu faul zum Kochen und sind zum ersten Mal, seit ich in New Haven lebe, zum Essen in ein Restaurant gegangen. Was fuer ein Sakrileg, aber wir haben es genossen :-)

The month ended with Thanksgiving - probably the most important family holiday in the US. Nick, his mom JoAnn and I were too lazy to cook and - for the first time I have been living in New Haven - had dinner at a restaurant. Quite a sacrilege but we enjoyed it :-)

Am Sonntagmorgen bekam ich einen Anruf vom Postamt in Gillette: Ihre Huehnerkueken sind da! Also schnell drei Stunden Fahrt auf der Schotterpiste durch die Prairie. Eigentlich sollten die Kueken nach Hulett geliefert werden, aber ich war nicht sicher, ob sie weitere 24 Stunden (bis Montagmorgen) ohne Wasser und Futter ueberlebt haetten. Die Kleinen sollen unser bestehendes Huehnerteam verstaerken. Eier werden sie aber erst in sechs Monaten legen. Solange muessen die anderen noch allein produzieren. Die sechs Haehne sind zwar huebsch, aber nutzlos.

On Sunday morning I got a phone call from the post office in Gillette: Your chicks are here! Means three hours driving on gravel road across the prairie. Actually the chicks were supposed to be picked up in Hulett but I was not sure if they would survive another 24 hours (till Monday morning) without water and feed. The little ones are going to support our current hen team. But it will take about six months till they lay eggs. Till then the other girls have to produce. The six roosters are pretty but useless.

Am Samstag waren wir auf einer Pferdeauktion (war zu faul, um Fotos zu machen) - nur zur Unterhaltung ... wir haben ja bereits 40 Pferde. Und bei Auktionen wird man zu oft hereingelegt, in der Hinsicht herrscht hier wirklich noch der Wilde Westen! Heike hat natuerlich trotzdem zugeschlagen und drei Jungpferde gekauft. Und das, obwohl ihr gerade der Teil eines Fingers amputiert werden musste. Calamity Jane (wie sie hier auch heisst) hat ihre Hand zwischen Seil und Trailer gehabt, als das Pferd anzog. Das Foto gehoert in einen Splatter-Movie, das kann ich Euch hier nicht zeigen.

On Saturday we went to a horse sale (was too lazy to take pics) - just for fun ... since we already have 40 horses. And our experience with horse sales is that most times you get cheated, in that way this is certainly still the Wild West! Heike could not resist (of course) and bought three young horses. Even though the doctors just amputed part of her left ring finger. Calamity Jane (as she is known as well) had her hand between the rope and the trailer when a horse pulled back. The photo of her hand belongs into a splatter movie, I won't show it here.

Nachdem unser Bueffel Daisy gestorben war, haben wir nun ein Bueffelkalb gekauft. Ihr Name ist Tequila, weil wir mit dem Verkaeufer auf den Kauf angestossen haben. Und Tequila laeuft auch ein bisschen so, als ob sie zu tief ins Glas geschaut haette. Wir hoffen, dass aus dem haesslichen Entlein noch ein huebscher Bueffel wird. Und ich sollte Bison sagen, denn das ist der korrekte Ausdruck.

After our buffalo Daisy had died, we bought a new buffalo calf. Her name is Tequila because the owner offered each of us one. Also Tequila runs in a funny way as if she is slightly drunk. We hope that the ugly duckling will become a beautiful buffalo one day. I should say bison which is the correct expression.

Die neuen Pferde machen sich (ja, ich muss auch die Webseite aktualisieren), nur Chuck ist noch lahm. Fohlen Chester (das Wollmammuth) verliert endlich sein Winterfell. Und Buster geht es auch besser, aber bei Beckenbruechen muss man sehr geduldig sein.

The new horses are doing well (yes, I definitely have to update the webpage), only Chuck is still lame. Colt Chester (the wolly mammoth) is finally losing his winter fur. And Buster is doing better but with pelvis fractures one has to be patient.

Am Dienstag (oder Mittwoch?) haben wir unseren Nachbarn geholfen, ca. 1000 Jaehrlingsrinder auf die Sommerkoppel zu bringen. Ein herrlicher (ca. 4-stuendiger) Ritt mit feschen Cowboys, einigen Klapperschlangen und viel Staub. Ich bin Frost geritten, der mich wieder gut durchgeschuettelt hat. Ein Pferd fuer Englischreiter, die einen schwungvollen Trab gewoehnt sind.

On Tuesday (or Wednesday?) we helped our neighbors move about 1000 yearling cattle onto summer pasture. A fun (4 hour) ride with dashing cowboys, some rattle snakes and lots of dust. I rode Frost whose trot is so rough that I felt like being on a bucking bull. A horse for English riders who are used to swinging gaits.

Die Truthahnsaison geht ihrem Ende zu, die Reitsaison beginnt am Samstag, eventuell gleich mit einem Branding.

The turkey season is about to end, the riding season is beginning on Saturday, maybe with a branding.

Der Herbst - wie die Antilopen-jagdsaison - geht seinem Ende zu. Wir hoffen zwar noch auf ein paar milde Tage im November (der Hirschjagdsaison), aber als ich heute mit dem Quad unterwegs war, um Salzbloecke zu den Pferden und Kuehen zu bringen, flogen mir die ersten Schneeflocken ins Gesicht.

Fall - as well as the antelope hunting season - is ending. We are still hoping for a few mild days in November (which is deer hunting season) but when I brought out salt blocks today on the 4-wheeler for the horses and cows, the first snow flakes were hitting me.

Am Sonntag waren Nick und ich in Rapid City, um im Baumarkt (wo auch sonst) Teile fuer die neue Abwasserleitung zu kaufen. Nachmittags haben Nick und Anke alles ausgemessen (Gefaelle etc.). Montag haben wir alle die Leitungen gelegt, alles wieder mit Erde bedeckt und den umgebenden Zaun geflickt. Dann hiess es in eisigem Sturm ueber 200 Heuballen zu laden, die wir dann heute morgen zu Carolina und Greg gebracht haben, die Futter fuer die Ziegen brauchten.

On Sunday Nick and I were in Rapid City to buy parts for the new sewer line at Menards (where else). In the afternoon Nick and Anke surveyed the area. On Monday we all put in the pipes, covered them again with dirt and fixed the surrounding fence. Then we had to load more than 200 hay bales in an icy storm. This morning we brought the hay over to Carolina and Greg who need it for their goats.

Ach ja, ueber Antilopen, genauer gesagt: Pronghorns, habe ich schon mal geschrieben, einfach Suchfunktion nutzen.

Una Chica buena

Bin heute Chica geritten, unsere neue Stute. Eigentlich sollte es ein einfacher Ritt werden, aber die drei Jaehrlinge, die wir (Anne, Petra und ich) zur Ranch bringen wollten, waren nicht sehr kooperativ. Dank Chica haben wir es geschafft, sie ist schnell, wendig und "cowy", kein Anfaengerpferd aufgrund ihrer Sensibilitaet, aber sicher.

Rode Chica today, our new mare. It should have been an easy ride but the three yearlings which we (Anne, Petra and I) had to bring to the ranch were not co-operative. Thanks to Chica we managed, though. She is fast, turns well and is "cowy", not a beginner's horse due to her sensitivity but safe.

Nachmittags waren wir Sightseeing, auf dem Weg zurueck habe ich den Sonnenuntergang fotografiert. Nick und Shannon haben heute das Lodge-Dach fertig gestellt, auf dem Foto sind sie noch bei der Arbeit. Und als ich am Samstag in der Stadt war, halfen Brandon (hier zu Pferde mit Blick auf die Praerie), Brandy, Emmett und Anke bei einem Branding. Emmett hilft auf dem Foto dabei, ein Kaelberbein festzuhalten: Frueh uebt sich.

In the afternoon we went sightseeing. On the way back I took the pic of the sunset. Nick and Shannon finished the lodge roof today, on the photo they are still at work. And when I went to town on Saturday, Brandon (on a horse looking out into the prairie), Brandy, Emmett and Anke helped at a branding. On the photo, Emmett is helping to hold a calf's leg: A cowboy's life starts early on.

Ganz unten seht Ihr unsere Jaeger LeRoy und seinen Enkelsohn James mit einer erlegten Antilope, die sich ohne Abschuss dank mangelnder Raubtiere und von Menschen angebauten Futterpflanzen unkontrolliert vermehren wuerden.

At the bottom you see our hunters LeRoy and his grandson James with one of their shot antelopes. Without shooting some of them their number would increase without control due to the lack of big numbers of predators and crops planted by men.

Jenseits von Afrika / Out of Africa

Streng genommen sind Pronghorns keine richtigen Antilopen, aber sie sehen so aus. Und nein, sie kommen nicht aus Afrika, sondern sind seit ca. einer Million Jahren in Nordamerika heimisch (und nirgendwo sonst auf der Welt). Pronghorns sind mit bis zu 85 km/h die schnellsten Landlebetiere des amerikanischen Kontinents, und nach dem Geparden die zweitschnellsten der Welt.

Strictly speaking, pronghorns are not antelope but they look like them. And no, they are not from Africa but have been living in North America for about one million years (and nowhere else in the world). At a maximum speed of about 60 miles, pronghorns are the fastest land animals on the American continent and after the cheetah the second fastest on earth.

Ich bin schon mal auf einem Pferd fuer einen Moment neben einer Pronghorn-Antilope hergaloppiert. Man kommt sich vor wie in Zeitlupe, weil ein Pferd nicht annaehrend an die unglaubliche Schnelligkeit der Turboziegen (wie wir sie hier nennen) herankommt. Springen koennen sie allerdings nicht sehr gut. Waehrend Hirsche wie Flummis ueber Zaeune huepfen, schluepfen Antilopen meist unter dem Zaun hindurch.

Once I rode my horse next to a pronghorn antelope. It seemed like slow motion because a horse cannot nearly run as fast as the turbo goats (as we call them here). Pronghorns are not good jumpers. While deer easily pop over fences, antilope prefer to slide underneath them.

Pronghorns sind die einzigen Saeugetiere der Welt, die ihre Hoerner (nicht zu verwechseln mit einem Geweih) jaehrlich abstossen. Ihre Kitze werden geruchslos geboren, um sie vor Raubtieren zu schuetzen. Antilopen leben in der offenen Praerie, wo sie einerseits Gefahr sehr frueh erkennen koennen, aber wo sie der Gefahr auch schutzlos ausgeliefert sind … ihre Schnelligkeit ist ihre einzige Chance.

Pronghorns are the only mammals on earth that lose their horns once a year (not to confuse with antlers). Their fawns are born without a scent. Thus they are better protected from predators. Antelopes live in the wide open where they can see danger from far away but where they are also without cover to hide … their speed is their only chance for survival.
