Keine Angst, Schmusi (s.u.), Weihnachten wird es Gaensebraten geben. Von unseren eigenen Gaensen. Ich finde das voellig okay, denn unsere Tiere leben artgerecht. Und Fleisch in Massen (mir fehlt das "sz") - insbesondere aus artgerechter Haltung - halte ich auch fuer gesund. Immerhin sind wir Allesfresser. Aber leider machen mir meine Gefuehle trotzdem einen Strich durch die Rechnung, und ich bin ernsthaft am Ueberlegen, Vegetarierin zu werden. Aber vorher muss ich noch die Gaense aussuchen, die dran glauben muessen ... irgendwie gemein.

Don't worry, Schmusi (see below), we will eat goose for Christmas. One or more of our geese. I think it's totally okay since our animals are kept species-appropriate. And meat if eaten in small amounts can be healthy, too - especially if animals are kept right. Last but not least we are omnivores. But nevertheless my feelings for my critters get the better of me and I am seriously thinking about becoming a vegetarian. But before I still have to pick out the geese that won't make it past Christmas ... pretty mean.

Ansonsten ist viel Bueroarbeit angesagt. Werde aber trotzdem noch mal mit Gauge rausgehen und die Pferde suchen ... falls er mir das mit der Schleife bis dahin vergeben hat.

Other than that: lots of office work. But later I will go out with Gauge and look for the horses ... if Gauge has forgiven me for the ribbon by then.

Chicks, Tequila und/and Cattle Drives

Am Sonntagmorgen bekam ich einen Anruf vom Postamt in Gillette: Ihre Huehnerkueken sind da! Also schnell drei Stunden Fahrt auf der Schotterpiste durch die Prairie. Eigentlich sollten die Kueken nach Hulett geliefert werden, aber ich war nicht sicher, ob sie weitere 24 Stunden (bis Montagmorgen) ohne Wasser und Futter ueberlebt haetten. Die Kleinen sollen unser bestehendes Huehnerteam verstaerken. Eier werden sie aber erst in sechs Monaten legen. Solange muessen die anderen noch allein produzieren. Die sechs Haehne sind zwar huebsch, aber nutzlos.

On Sunday morning I got a phone call from the post office in Gillette: Your chicks are here! Means three hours driving on gravel road across the prairie. Actually the chicks were supposed to be picked up in Hulett but I was not sure if they would survive another 24 hours (till Monday morning) without water and feed. The little ones are going to support our current hen team. But it will take about six months till they lay eggs. Till then the other girls have to produce. The six roosters are pretty but useless.

Am Samstag waren wir auf einer Pferdeauktion (war zu faul, um Fotos zu machen) - nur zur Unterhaltung ... wir haben ja bereits 40 Pferde. Und bei Auktionen wird man zu oft hereingelegt, in der Hinsicht herrscht hier wirklich noch der Wilde Westen! Heike hat natuerlich trotzdem zugeschlagen und drei Jungpferde gekauft. Und das, obwohl ihr gerade der Teil eines Fingers amputiert werden musste. Calamity Jane (wie sie hier auch heisst) hat ihre Hand zwischen Seil und Trailer gehabt, als das Pferd anzog. Das Foto gehoert in einen Splatter-Movie, das kann ich Euch hier nicht zeigen.

On Saturday we went to a horse sale (was too lazy to take pics) - just for fun ... since we already have 40 horses. And our experience with horse sales is that most times you get cheated, in that way this is certainly still the Wild West! Heike could not resist (of course) and bought three young horses. Even though the doctors just amputed part of her left ring finger. Calamity Jane (as she is known as well) had her hand between the rope and the trailer when a horse pulled back. The photo of her hand belongs into a splatter movie, I won't show it here.

Nachdem unser Bueffel Daisy gestorben war, haben wir nun ein Bueffelkalb gekauft. Ihr Name ist Tequila, weil wir mit dem Verkaeufer auf den Kauf angestossen haben. Und Tequila laeuft auch ein bisschen so, als ob sie zu tief ins Glas geschaut haette. Wir hoffen, dass aus dem haesslichen Entlein noch ein huebscher Bueffel wird. Und ich sollte Bison sagen, denn das ist der korrekte Ausdruck.

After our buffalo Daisy had died, we bought a new buffalo calf. Her name is Tequila because the owner offered each of us one. Also Tequila runs in a funny way as if she is slightly drunk. We hope that the ugly duckling will become a beautiful buffalo one day. I should say bison which is the correct expression.

Die neuen Pferde machen sich (ja, ich muss auch die Webseite aktualisieren), nur Chuck ist noch lahm. Fohlen Chester (das Wollmammuth) verliert endlich sein Winterfell. Und Buster geht es auch besser, aber bei Beckenbruechen muss man sehr geduldig sein.

The new horses are doing well (yes, I definitely have to update the webpage), only Chuck is still lame. Colt Chester (the wolly mammoth) is finally losing his winter fur. And Buster is doing better but with pelvis fractures one has to be patient.

Am Dienstag (oder Mittwoch?) haben wir unseren Nachbarn geholfen, ca. 1000 Jaehrlingsrinder auf die Sommerkoppel zu bringen. Ein herrlicher (ca. 4-stuendiger) Ritt mit feschen Cowboys, einigen Klapperschlangen und viel Staub. Ich bin Frost geritten, der mich wieder gut durchgeschuettelt hat. Ein Pferd fuer Englischreiter, die einen schwungvollen Trab gewoehnt sind.

On Tuesday (or Wednesday?) we helped our neighbors move about 1000 yearling cattle onto summer pasture. A fun (4 hour) ride with dashing cowboys, some rattle snakes and lots of dust. I rode Frost whose trot is so rough that I felt like being on a bucking bull. A horse for English riders who are used to swinging gaits.

Die Truthahnsaison geht ihrem Ende zu, die Reitsaison beginnt am Samstag, eventuell gleich mit einem Branding.

The turkey season is about to end, the riding season is beginning on Saturday, maybe with a branding.

Vergangenes Jahr habe ich meine Schafe zum Scheren zu Chuck nach Montana gebracht. Anke erinnert sich sicher noch an unsere Irrfahrt, wir sind im Schlamm steckengeblieben und mussten stundenlang wandern, um einen Rancher mit Traktor zu finden, der uns und unseren Trailer mehrere Meilen die Schlammpiste entlang zog, bis wir wieder von allein vorankamen.

Last year I had to bring my sheep to Chuck in Montana to get them sheared. Anke probably remembers our odyssee, we got stuck in the mud and had to walk for hours to find a rancher with a tractor to pull us and our trailer several miles along the muddy road till we could move by ourselves again.

Dieses Jahr hatte Chuck ein bisschen Zeit ... viele der grossen Herden waren zu nass und koennen dann nicht nicht geschoren werden. Ich hatte meine gut 20 Wollknaeuel nachts in den Schuppen gebracht, so dass sie heute morgen trocken waren. Chuck hatte Marc mitgebracht, der ein Schaf in etwa drei Minuten scheren kann (Foto). Er musste sich allerdings erstmal an Schafe mit Schwanz gewoehnen ;-) Hier sehr Ihr Schmusi mit Wolle ... und dann nackt. Nach dem Scheren haben die Herren sich mit Nick und Emmett im Whirlpool entspannt. Naja, es sei ihnen gegoennt.

This year Chuck had some time ... many of the big herds were too wet and cannot be sheared then. I had brought my 20 plus head into the shed last night, so they were dry this morning. Chuck had brough Marc along who can shear one sheep in about three minutes (photo). He first had to get used to sheep with a tail, though ;-) Here you see Schmusi with wool ... and then naked. After shearing, the guys relaxed in the hot tub (Nick and Emmett included). Okay, let them be.

Als wir noch auf der Ranch lebten, die Nick managte, hatten wir knapp 2000 Schafe ... da kam ein ganzes Team von amerikanischen, australischen und neuseelaendischen Scherern ... und wir brauchten drei Tage fuers Scheren.

When we still lived on the ranch that Nick managed, we had almost 2000 sheep ... a whole team of American, Australian and Newzealand shearers came ... and we took three days to finish shearing.
