Einmal Westkueste und zurueck / To the West Coast and back

We are back in Wyoming and preparing for the photo workshop.

Last week we - together with Brandy and her kids - visited Nikki, Rob and their kids. Just the trip across the Rockies took two days. The climate on the North West coast is characterized by water. There are many raging rivers, everywhere water falls down rock faces, fog wafts around the tree tips ... and it rains a lot. Thus, one enjoys the rare mild sunny hours even more.

Rob and Nikki built a cabin in the middle of the woods. Right next to it the White Salmon flows by. Rob is an engineer and just founded a company of his own. The area around the small town of Hood attracts high tech specialists and outdoor athletes - Rob is both.

Nick and I filled our cooler with fresh salmon before we started on our long trip to Wyoming again.

Gordos Zaehmung / The taming of Gordo

Menschenbaby (Garrett) und Hundebabies (Border Collies): Ach, wie suess!
Human baby (Garrett) and dog babies (Border Collies): Oh how cute!

One year ago at the Black Hills Stockshow, we bought a quite useful mare (Sunny) for little money and unfortunately a quite lame gelding (Leo) for a lot of money. As Tav used to say: Everything is allowed in love and when selling horses ... well.

This year Nick and I will instead drive to the West coast with his daughter Brandy and her kids to visit his other daughter Nikki and her family. The live on the border between Washington and Oregon. We will need about two days to get there. But before that Emmett will have his first wrestling match on Saturday.

As I mentioned before, Ryan from Chicago bought our black mare Pearl. Pearl is great but sometimes so fast that she loses her riders (Tine, Sandra ...). Now Ryan moved to Hulett and in with cowboy Josh who bought our black paint gelding Gordo. Gordo excelled at bucking ...but it seems that Ryan has a good influence on him, see photo below. Hope it stays that way.

Brandings und/and Cattle Drives

Wace beim Ropen / Wace roping
Fotos folgen.

On Wednesday our yearling cattle were shipped in ... fresh from the feedlot. They are enjoying their new freedom like teenagers and are jumping all fences ... crew and guests stay pretty busy. Also on Wednesday, Angie and I drove to Belle Fourche to meet the farrier. Stella (diagnosis ?), Savannah (too small hooves), Jet (thin soles), Leo (navicular) and Vegas (founder) were shoed. Photos will follow.

Here you'll see pics from the branding on Saturday and the cattle drives on Sunday and Monday. And of Nick's daughter Nikki and her daughter Lark.

Mit Schuessen ins neue Jahr / With gun shots into the new year

Tontaubenschiessen / trap shooting
Silvestermorgen lagen gut fuenf Zentimeter Neuschnee.

On the morning of New Year's Eve there were more than two inches of new snow. While Nick plowed his pond and took care of his trap shoot machine, I cleaned the lodge and cooked. Early afternoon about 50 neighbors (one hour away is still neighborhood) came to shoot trap, skate, play ice hockey and spend the evening in the lodge and eat.

Dafuer hallten Gewehrschuesse durchs Tal. Ein schoener Abend.

As it is custom out here, the women brought food as well. Otherwise I would have been slightly stressed. I still did not manage to take photos of the fire at the pond and the ice hockey match. Here in the country people don't do fireworks for New Year's, just for July 4 (Independence Day). Instead gunshots echoed through the canyons. A fun evening.

A belated Happy New Year to all of you!

Zum vierten Mal Opa / Grandpa for the fourth time

Rob, Bridger, Nikki und/and Lark

Nick has become a proud grandfather again (called Opa in German). After three grandsons it's a girl now: Lark Trinity (the second name after Nikki's dead sister). Bridger had known all along that he would have a sister. Everyone is healthy and happy.

Mir faellt kein Titel ein / I cannot think of a headline

Fruehstueck bei Sonnenaufgang / Breakfast at sunrise

It snowed for two days but now the sun is shining again and the temps are rising. Good because we don't want to start feeding the horses on a regular basis, yet. There is too much grass left on the ranch.

We already sold all of our hay (about 13,000 bales), at least on paper. The buyers are picking up one semi load after the other and drive the hay to Colorado where it bareley rained all summer. Of course, we keep some hay for our critters.

The last deer hunters - and our guide Tom - will leave on Wednesday, Thursday will be Thanksgiving, which is at least as important as Christmas in the US and almost everyone eats turkey. On Friday Anke has to pack again, four weeks have gone by so fast.

We are waiting for news that Nikki has born her second child but latter one does not seem to be a hurry. Brandy took Emmett and Garrett and has flown to Nikki to help her and her husband, Rob. In the meantime Brandon shot an elk in Southern Wyoming. We are taking care of Brandy's and Brandon's dogs, Billie and Luna who are fighting with Gauge and Penny for all the fresh deer bones.

Nick's mother, JoAnn, is having problems with her high blood pressure these days. We drove her to the ER several times which takes almost two hours out here ... so one should not wait too long. They could not find anything, she probably just needs new medication and/or a higher dosage. We hope she'll be feeling better soon.

Nein, wir haben nichts von Tav gehoert. Wer ihn kontaktieren will, muss das direkt tun.

No, we haven't heard from Tav. Whoever wants to talk to him, needs to contact him directly.

Brandy had Garrett in the water at a midwife's house. By evening the two were already home again. Somehow I forgot to take a pic of the father who is thrilled as well ... well, hopefully the parents will send a few more photos.

By the way, Nick and I are Opa and Oma again.

Okay, got the new camera. Now I just have to learn how to use it. Attached photos which guests took. Jasmin, Claudia, Gabi and Mandy have left. Allessandra already arrived on Wednesday. And on Saturday Lisa, Tine, Sarah, Sabine and Antje came in. Thomas could not make it this year.

Samstag bin ich Richtung Buffalo, Wyoming abgefahren. Mit meiner Stute Stella. Wir werden an einem 4-taegigen Parelli-Seminar teilnehmen. Details und Fotos folgen. Bis Mittwoch gibt es keine Fotos von New Haven.
