Mit Schuessen ins neue Jahr / With gun shots into the new year

Tontaubenschiessen / trap shooting

Silvestermorgen lagen gut fuenf Zentimeter Neuschnee. Waehrend Nick den Teich von Schnee raeumte und die Tontaubenschiessanlage aufstellte, habe ich die Lodge geputzt und gekocht. Am fruehen Nachmittag kamen um die 50 Nachbarn (eine Stunde entfernt zaehlt noch als Nachbarschaft), um zu schiessen, Schlittschuh zu laufen, Eishockey zu spielen und am Abend in der Lodge zu sitzen und zu essen.

On the morning of New Year's Eve there were more than two inches of new snow. While Nick plowed his pond and took care of his trap shoot machine, I cleaned the lodge and cooked. Early afternoon about 50 neighbors (one hour away is still neighborhood) came to shoot trap, skate, play ice hockey and spend the evening in the lodge and eat.

Natuerlich haben die Frauen, wie das hier so ueblich ist, auch etwas zum Essen mitgebracht, sonst waere ich etwas ueberfordert gewesen. Trotzdem habe ich es leider nicht geschafft, Fotos vom Feuer am Teich und dem Eishockeyspiel zu machen. Geknallt wird hier auf dem Lande nur zum 4. Juli, dem Unabhaengigkeitstag, aber nicht zu Silvester. Dafuer hallten Gewehrschuesse durchs Tal. Ein schoener Abend.

As it is custom out here, the women brought food as well. Otherwise I would have been slightly stressed. I still did not manage to take photos of the fire at the pond and the ice hockey match. Here in the country people don't do fireworks for New Year's, just for July 4 (Independence Day). Instead gunshots echoed through the canyons. A fun evening.

Action auf dem Eis / Action on the ice

Fuer heute hatte Nick unsere Nachbarn Jared und Sarah sowie Earl und Cori mit ihren insgesamt 9 (!) Kindern zum Schlittschuhlaufen eingeladen. Nick hat dafuer den Schnee auf dem Teich hinter unserem Haus geraeumt und Wasser auf die Eisflaeche laufen lassen, die einigermassen glatt gefror. Wir hatten viel Spass.

Nick invited our neighbors Jared and Sarah as well as Earl and Cori with their altogether 9 (!) kids for ice-skating. Nick had plowed the snow off the pond behind our house and let water run onto it which had frozen pretty smooth. We had lots of fun.

Beim Eishockeyspiel standen Sarah und Cori im Tor, Nick, Jared, Seely, Akayla, Seth, Grant, Malachai und Levi spielten. Earl passte auf die beiden Kleinen, Hannah und Elena, auf, waehrend Baby Titus bei JoAnn im Haus geblieben war. Ach ja, Gauge versuchte, den Puck zu erwischen, vergass aber dabei immer die laengere Bremsstrecke auf glattem Eis. Penny war schlauer und blieb am Rande des Sees sitzen.

During the ice hockey match Sarah and Cori stood in the goals, Nick, Jared, Seely, Akayla, Seth, Grant, Malachai and Levi played and Earl took care of the little ones, Hannah and Elena, while baby Titus stayed with JoAnn in the house. Gauge tried the catch the puck but always forgot that it takes much longer to stop on ice than on normal ground. Penny was smarter and stayed at the shore.

Auf schnellen Kufen / On fast skates

Nun ist Nick doch noch zum Eishockeyspielen gekommen. Unsere Nachbarn Jimmy und Bev haben uns eingeladen. Sie wohnen etwa eine Stunde entfernt in der Praerie, aber das zaehlt hier noch zur Nachbarschaft. Oben seht Ihr Nick mit Emmett im Schlepptau beim Spiel mit Otto, Demerest, Savannah, Chester u.a. Unten hilft Savannah Emmett, auf den Beinen zu bleiben. Und dann waren da noch die beiden zahmen Truthaehne, die uns die ganze Zeit zuschauten. Besser als Fernsehen!

Nick finally got to play ice hockey. Our neighbors Jimmi and Bev invited us to come over. They live about one hour away in the prairie but that still counts as neighborhood here. Above you see Nick dragging Emmett along with him while playing with Otto, Demerest, Savannah, Chester and others. Below Savannah helps Emmett to keep on his feet. And then there were the two tame turkey gobblers which watched us the whole time. Better than TV!
