Kommt mir das nur so vor, oder vergeht die Zeit immer schneller je aelter man wird? Wir haben einem Nachbarn bei der Rinderarbeit geholfen (es war ausnahmsweise mal nicht so kalt), haben Freunde - Lynette und Rick - auf einer Ranch westlich von uns besucht, die auch Parelli Horsemanship praktizieren, waren mit Heike auf der Black Hills Viehschau in Rapid City (www.blackhillsstockshow.com), wo wir auch die hochschwangere Romina und ihren Mann Nick trafen, haben die Pferde von der Winterweide zurueck zur Ranch gebracht, um sie ab jetzt mit Heu zu fuettern, haben fleissig an der Teacher Cabin gearbeitet, um sie rechtzeitig zur Reitsaison fuer Gaeste fertig zu stellen, und, und, und.

Does that just happen to me or is time flying by faster when one gets older? We helped a neighbor move cattle (it wasn't that cold for a change), visited friends - Lynette and Rick - on a ranch further west from us who also practice Parelli Natural Horsemanship, went to the Black Hills Stock Show in Rapid City with Heike (www.blackhillsstockshow.com) where we also met a very pregnant Romina and her husband Nick, moved the horses from the winter pasture back to the ranch to start feeding them with hay, worked lots of hours on the Teacher Cabin to get it ready for our riding guests and and and.

Ich war heute uebrigens draussen und habe ein Foto von jedem unserer 38 Pferde - plus Esel - geschossen. Zu sehen auf unserer Facebook-Seite www.facebook.com/thenewhavenranch! Unsere Webseite ist leider nicht ganz aktuell. Und einige Pferde sind mit ihrem Plueschfell und teilweise anderen Farben im Winter gar nicht wiederzuerkennen.

Today I went out to take a photo of everyone of our 38 horses - plus donkey. You can see them on our facebook page www.facebook.com/thenewhavenranch! Our website is - unfortunately - not totally up-to-date. Some of the horses are barely recognizable due to their teddy furs and different colors in winter.

Was die Buchungen fuer die naechste Saison angeht: Es gibt noch einige wenige Plaetze im Mai und in der zweiten Julihaelfte sowie ab Mitte September. Juni, die erste Julihaelfte und August sind fast bis ganz ausgebucht. Meldet Euch, falls Ihr dieses Jahr noch kommen wollt.

As for bookings for the coming season: There are a few spots left in May, the second half of July and after mid-September. June, the first half of July and August are almost or totally booked out. Let me know if you are still planning on coming this year.

Nick und ich werden diesen Winter tatsaechlich noch mal verreisen: eine Woche Deutschland und dann noch eine Woche Irland. Nicks Wurzeln sind zwar fast ausschliesslich deutsch, aber die paar Prozent irisches Blut scheinen staerker zu sein, wenn man seiner Haarfarbe und seinem Temperament nach urteilen darf ;-)

Nick and I will still travel this winter: one week Germany and one week Ireland. Nick's roots are mostly German but the few drops of Irish blood seem to be stronger if you can judge by his hair color and temperament ;-)

Jetzt vergesse ich uebers Facebook-Posten schon den Blog ... die Filme muesst Ihr Euch dort anschauen. Ich glaube nicht, dass ich nochmal die Geduld aufbringe, sie auch hier hochzuladen.

I am almost forgetting the blog while posting on Facebook all the time ... you'll have to watch the movies there, though. I don't think I will muster the patience again to upload them here as well.

Es ist Winter, aber es liegt nicht allzu viel Schnee, und es ist nicht allzu kalt. Nach wochenlangem Streik haben meine Huehner endlich wieder ein (!) Ei gelegt ... wohlgemerkt ein Ei bei ueber 20 Huehnern ... naja. Nick spricht schon von Huehnernudelsuppe, aber soweit sind wir noch nicht!

It is winter but there isn't too much snow and it's not too cold either. After a strike which has lasted for weeks my chickens have layed one (!) egg ... just to mention it again: one egg and more than 20 chickens ... well. Nick is talking about chicken noodle soup but we are not there, yet.

Die Tiere geniessen die Winterruhe, die Pferde sind trotz des kargen Wintergrases, das sie aus dem Schnee scharren muessen, fetter als im Sommer. Was wieder einmal beweist, wie schaedlich zu viel gutes Futter - insbesondere Getreide - fuer Pferde sein kann. Sie sind einfach nicht dafuer gemacht.

The animals are enjoying the calm of the winter. The horses are fatter than in summer even though they have to paw out old grass from underneath the snow. Which shows again that most horses are not made for too much and too good feed - especially grain.

Ich bin leider auch nicht fuer Schokolade gemacht, so dass mal wieder eine Neujahrsdiaet ansteht ;-)

And I am not made for chocolate which means a new year's diet is on the way ;-)

Obwohl wir eigentlich gar nicht sooo viel zu tun haben, sind wir den ganzen Tag beschaeftigt ... das ist wie mit den Rentnern, die gar nicht mehr wissen, wie sie frueher ueberhaupt die Zeit hatten, um arbeiten zu gehen. Der Weihnachtstrubel geht hier draussen an uns vorbei, und ich komme endlich mal wieder dazu, Buecher zu lesen. Was will man mehr ?!

Even though we don't have to do thaaat much right now, we are busy all day ... that's like with retired people who have so much on their plate that they have no idea how before retirement they had the time to go to work. All that Christmas hassle passed us out here on the ranch and I am finding the time to read books again. What more could I want for ?!

Nick und ich wuenschen Euch allen frohe Weihnachten und ein gutes neues Jahr! Wir freuen uns darauf, Euch kennenzulernen bzw. viele von Euch wiederzusehen. Es sind nur noch knapp fuenf Monate zum Saisonbeginn ;-) Und ja, Lance kommt wieder ...

Von der Sauna in den Nebel / From the sauna into the fog

Bevor ich es vergesse: Die New Haven Ranch ist jetzt auch auf Facebook! Momentan ist Lance fuer die Seite verantwortlich, aber bis Oktober werde ich sie uebernehmen. Bin ja noch Facebook-Analphabetin ;-) Und nein, twittern etc. werde ich auch in Zukunft nicht !

Before I forget: The New Haven Ranch is on Facebook now! Right now Lance is editing the page but I will take over by October. I am still a Facebook illiterate ;-) And no, I won't start twittering etc. ... no matter what! 

Der Herbst hat begonnen. Heute Morgen war New Haven wieder in Nebelschwaden gehuellt, bevor die Sonnenstrahlen sie vertreiben konnten. Am Freitag haben wir allerdings noch mal bei einem Branding geholfen: 160 Kaelber bei 40 Grad Celsius in der baumlosen Praerie! Ich habe nur Spritzen gegeben und war schon halb tot. Die Wrestler sahen aus, als ob sie aus der Sauna kamen. Trotz Hitze und Kaelbertritten hat es jedoch allen Spass gebracht.

Fall has come. This morning New Haven was shrouded in wafts of fog before the rays of the sun could banish them. On Friday we helped at another branding, though: 160 calves, 100 degrees Fahrenheit and all that in the treeless prairie ! I just vaccinated and was close to death. The wrestlers looked like they came out of the sauna. But despite the heat and kicking calves everyone had fun.

Janine, Ingrid, Luke, Hanoch, Nava und Ofra haben uns schon wieder verlassen. Daniela, Marc und Dieter sind noch hier. Und Kathrin und Hubert (aus Deutschland) sowie Maggie und Alex (aus Oesterreich) sind angekommen. Heute sind wieder alle in der Praerie, um Nachbar Will bei der Rinderarbeit zu helfen ... zum Glueck sind es heute nur ca. 25 Grad.

Janine, Ingrid, Luke, Hanoch, Nava and Ofra have left us again. Daniela, Marc and Dieter are still here. And Kathrin and Hubert (from Germany) as well as Maggie and Alex (from Austria) have arrived. Today they are all in the prairie again to help neighbor Will with cattle work ... luckily it's just 80 degrees today.
