Heute musste Denis (hier vor den Praesidentenkoepfen des Mount Rushmore) wieder zurueck nach Deutschland fliegen. Unser Schwabe ist uns in den vergangenen drei Monaten ans Herz gewachsen. Er kam als Greenhorn in den Wilden Westen und geht - wie man sieht - als gestandener Cowboy.
Today Denis (here in front of Mount Rushmore's presidential heads) has to fly back to Germany. We will miss our "Schwab" (he is from the Southern German region of Schwaben). Three months ago he came as a greenhorn to the Wild West. Now - as you can see - he leaves as a cowboy.
Apropos Mount Rushmore: Das ist eigentlich der Berg, in den die ueber 18 m hohen Koepfe hineingemeisselt wurden. Die Arbeiten (mit 400 Mitarbeitern) dauerten von 1927 bis 1941, bis sie aus Geldmangel eingestellt wurden. Eigentlich wollte man die Herren bis auf Taillenhoehe abbilden. Von links nach rechts sieht man George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt und Abraham Lincoln. Man kennt das Monument aus vielen Filmen, z.B. dem Klassiker "Der unsichtbare Dritte" mit Cary Grant und zuletzt der "National Treasure"-Serie mit Nicholas Cage ("Das Vermaechtnis des geheimen Buches").
By the way: Mount Rushmore is the mountain into which they cut the 60 ft. high heads. Operations (400 workers were involved) lasted from 1927 to 1941 when they had to down tools due to lack of money. Originally one had planned to depict the presidents down to their waistline. You can see (from left to right) George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. And you probably know the monument from many movies, i.e. the classic "North by Northwest" with Cary Grant or just lately "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" with Nicholas Cage.
