"Lucky Dan"

Red, die Longhornkuh, hat es leider nicht geschafft, dafuer aber ihr Beefalo-Kalb "Lucky Dan" (d.h. "Dan, der noch mal Glueck gehabt hat"), hier mit seinem Namensgeber und Retter Dan und Carlotta (in neuen Cowboyboots), die jetzt Kaelber-Ersatzmutter ist. Mehr ueber "Lucky Dan", Red und unsere Neuankoemmlinge Heidi, Carlotta, Sylvia, Dominik, Jim und Alden im naechsten Blog. Jetzt geht es erst mal zum Rindertreiben.

Red, our longhorn cow, did not make it but her beefalo calf "Lucky Dan" did, here with his namegiver and rescuer Dan and Carlotta (in new cowboy boots) who is now the calf's replacement mother. More about "Lucky Dan", Red and our new arrivals Heidi, Carlotta, Sylvia, Dominik, Jim and Alden in the next blog. Now we have to move cattle.

Wird Red ueberleben? / Will Red survive?

Seit Monaten sieht unsere Longhornkuh so aus, als ob sie ein Kalb bekommt, ihr Bauch wurde immer dicker ... waehrend sie immer schwaecher wurde. Gestern hat Nick sie eigenhaendig umstossen koennen (unsere Jaeger Alan und Dan mussten sie allerdings am Boden halten). Wir haetten wahrscheinlich frueher eingreifen sollen, aber normalerweise hilft sich die Natur in solchen Fallen immer selbst.

For the last few months our longhorn cow has been looking like she was about to give birth, her tummy got bigger and bigger ... while she got weaker and weaker. Yesterday Nick pushed her to the ground (our hunters Alan and Dan kept her there). We probably should have intervened earlier but normally mother nature takes care of herself.

Hier fuehlt Nick gerade nach dem Kalb und spritzt danach Medikamente, um eine Abtreibung einzuleiten - ob das Kalb lebt oder nicht weiss er nicht. Hoffentlich ist die Kuh dafuer noch stark genug ... bisher hat sie nur Wehen. Und nein, Tieraerzte kommen hier nie raus, schon gar nicht fuer eine Kuh.

Here Nick is feeling for the calf and then injects drugs to induce the birth - if the calf is still alive or not, he does not know. Hopefully the cow is still strong enough ... so far she only had contractions. And no, vets don't come out here, and certainly not for one single cow.

P.S. Als ich heute Abend zurueckkam (habe Heidi und Carlotta aus Rapid City abgeholt), hoerte ich, dass Nick, Dan und Anke das Kalb herausgezogen haben und es lebt: ein Beefalo namens "Lucky Dan" ... morgen mehr.

P.S. When I came home tonite (picked up Heidi and Carlotta in Rapid City), I heard that Nick, Dan and Anke had pulled the calf and it is still alive: a beefalo named "Lucky Dan" ... more tomorrow.
