Da wir erst am Donnerstag aus Montana zurueckgekehrt sind, hatte ich keine Lust, dieses Jahr wieder eine Silvesterparty fuer die Nachbarschaft zu organisieren. Nick und ich sind stattdessen nach Gillette zu einem Rodeo gefahren, das erstaunlich gut war - nur bockende Pferde und Bullen und ziemlich gute Cowboys. Danach spielten Chancey Williams und die Younger Brothers zum Westerntanz auf. Ausserhalb des Wilden Westens ist es ein seltener Anblick, aber hier tanzen Paare von 18 bis 80 zusammen - schnell und wild oder langsam und gesetzt, jeder in seiner Fasson.

Since we did not return from Montana till Thursday, I did not feel like organizing a New Year's Eve party for the neighborhood again this year. Instead Nick and I drove to a rodeo in Gillette which was amazingly good - just bucking horses and bulls and pretty good cowboys. Afterwards Chancey Williams and the Younger Brothers played their Western dance music. Other places than here it has become rare but here in the Wild West it is common for couples from 18 to 80 to dance together - fast and wild or slow and safe, everyone as they can and want to.

Am ersten Tag des neuen Jahres haben wir uns von JoAnn fuettern lassen und waren wir im Schneetreiben im Polaris auf der Ranch unterwegs. Als wir voellig verfroren zurueckkamen, ging's gleich in den Whirlpool ... waehrend der Schnee um uns herumwehte. Was fuer ein hartes Leben ;-)

On the first day of the new year we got ourselves fed by JoAnn and then toured the ranch in the Polaris in falling snow. When we came home, we were very cold and jumped into the hot tub ... while the snow fell around us. What a hard life ;-)

Uebrigens: Wir haben nun auch Savannah verkauft, da wir sie immer beschlagen mussten. Sie wird auch ein Kinderpferd werden und ein Luxusleben fuehren. Das macht die Trennung leichter.

By the way: We have also sold Savannah since we always had to shoe her. She will be a kid's horse as well and will have a good life. This makes separating from her easier.

Mit Laemmern und Zicklein ins neue Jahr / With lambs and goat kids into the new year

Zum ersten Mal, seit ich hier lebe, muessen wir das Silvester-Eishockeyturnier absagen, weil Wasser von irgendwoher auf das Eis des Teiches laeuft und die Eisflaeche ganz uneben ist. Die anderen Seen sind zu weit von der Strasse entfernt und bei den Schneemassen nicht fuer alle zugaenglich. Aber ich bin sicher, dass wir trotzdem Spass haben werden ... dazu morgen mehr.

For the first time since I have been living here we had to cancel our annual New Year's Eve ice hocley tournament because water is running onto the ice of the pond making it very uneven. The other ponds are too far away from the road and cannot be reached by everyone with all the snow on the ground. I am sure we will still have lots of fun ... more tomorrow.

Waehrend die beiden Laemmchen sich schon um Mamas Euter draengeln, haben wir ein neues Sorgenkind ... eine der Ziegen hat Zwillinge bekommen. Eines der Zicklein starb gleich (Kaelte), das andere hat Tina mit stuendlichen Kolostrum-Fuetterungen durch die Nacht gebracht. Hier seht Ihr Brandy mit dem einen Pfund schweren Ziegenbaby, das immer noch etwas schwach ist.

While the two lambs are already pushing to get to mom's bag, we have another baby to worry about ... one of the goats had twins. One of them died immediately (cold), Tina saved the other one through the night with hourly infusions of colostrum. Here you see Brandy with the little one pound goat which is still pretty weak.

Kolostrum: So wird die Erstmilch von Saeugetieren bezeichnet. Sie enthaelt besonders viele Inhaltsstoffe, die das Immunsystem von Neugeborenen staerken. In diesem Fall wollte die Ziege nichts geben, aber man kann Ersatz-Kolostrum kaufen, es kostet ein Heidengeld.

Colostrum is the first milk which mammals produce. It helps to strengten the new born's immune system. In this case the goat would not give milk but one can buy replacement colostrum which is pretty expensive.

Ich wuensche Euch allen das Beste fuer 2010! Ich hoffe, wir sehen Einige von Euch wieder hier -oder auch zum ersten Mal - auf New Haven. Andere koennen nicht kommen, weil sie ihren Job verloren haben (wir druecken die Daumen) oder schwanger geworden sind (wir druecken ebenfalls die Daumen). An alle, die hier waren: Wir hatten viel Spass mit Euch ... und Ihr hoffentlich mit uns. Wir freuen uns schon auf die naechste Saison!

I wish all of you the best for 2010! I hope we will see you again or for the first time on New Haven. Some won't be able to come because they lost their job (we keep our fingers crossed) or because they became pregnant (we keep our fingers crossed as well). But to all who were here: We had lots of fun with you ... and you hopefully with us. We are looking forward to the next season!
