Achtung, Babies! / Attention, babies! |
There won't be many Easter lambs for Easter. First, Easter is pretty early this year and second, most ranchers have their ewes lamb outside. And it's still too cold to do that now. The first calves, though have already arrived. When to calve has become somewhat of a philosophy in itself: weather, terrain, feed costs and availability, cattle breed, labor and labor costs, grazing management, natural bio rhythm of the cows, market up and downs, weaning weight, sustainability and, and, and. Every rancher decides differently.
The cows which we bought last year and which are still grazing at Brandon's and Brandy's in Montana, will calve from mid-April on into June. Nick is planning to have them calve even later (May 1) next year. Why? The exact reasoning (and it's always an experiment as well) will be a bit too much for this blog. But all of this year's guests can ask Nick personally ;-) (Hmmm ... I could also ask him to write one of the next blogs himself.)
Fotos folgen.
Yesterday we helped a neighbor to check his replacement ewes for pregnancy. The weather was beautiful. Photos will follow.
Erst einmal frohe Ostern!
Happy Easter for now!
