Von der Praerie in die Canyons / From the prairie into the canyons

Donnerstagabend um 20 Uhr war ich endlich mit dem Maehen fertig, und es ist nichts passiert ... ausser ein paar gebrochener Sicheln. Jetzt nur noch ein paar Naechte Wenden, und die Heusaison ist fuer mich vorbei. Nick muss noch Ballen machen und diese dann in die Scheune bringen ... das dauert bei ca. 12.000 Stueck!

Thursday evening at 8 pm I was finally done with cutting hay. Nothing happened other than some broke sickel sections. Now just a few nights of raking and I will be done with haying for good. Nick still has to bale and bring the bales into the barn ... which takes some time with 12,000 pieces!

Unsere Gaeste waren in Sued-Dakota reiten, am Freitag stand dann wieder ein Viehtrieb bei uns an. Nach welliger baumloser Praerie nun wieder tiefe bewaldete Canyons. Waehrend Andreas und Michaela wieder auf Reisen gingen (dieses Mal Montana), konnte Kathleen sich nicht so ganz trennen und kam noch mal fuer einen Tag zum Reiten vorbei. Und das alles unter dunklen Gewitterwolken ... die dann wieder vorueberzogen. Horst, Silkes Mann und Svens Vater, reitet lieber Maschinen als Pferde, aber die entsprechenden Fotos sind noch in Silkes Kamera.

Our guests went riding in Sued-Dakota but on Friday we had another cattle drive in New Haven. After a rolling treeless prairie now deep timbered canyons. While Andreas and Michaela went sightseeing again (this time Montana), Kathleen could not really part and came back for another day of riding. And all that underneath dark thunder clouds ... which moved on. Horst, Silke's husband and Sven's father, prefers to ride machines instead of horses but the photos of that are still in Silke's camera.

Heute - samstags - sind alle am Devils Tower, um Brandon's and Brandy's Ziegen zu arbeiten. Details folgen.

Today - Saturday - everyone is at Devils Tower to work Brandon's and Brandy's goats. Details will follow.

Wildbeobachtung / Watching game

Gestern Abends sind Silke, Horst und ihr Sohn Sven (aus Hamburg) angereist. Wir waren zum Grillen am See. Und heute haben sich alle auf einen langen Ritt gemacht ... fuer die, die zu Hause nicht reiten, war es ganz schoen anstrengend ... deshalb brauchen wir auch keinen Fernseher ... abends fallen alle immer muede ins Bett.

Yesterday evening Silke, Horst and their son Sven (from Hamburg) arrived. We BBQed at the lake. And today everyone went on a long ride ... for those who don't ride at home that's pretty tough ... this is why we don't need TVs ... in the evening people are tired and just fall into bed.

Ich habe Heu gewendet und dabei viele Tiere beobachtet, z.B. dieses Kitz (oben). Den Wender seht Ihr unten aus meiner Sicht im Traktor. Nick hat Ballen gepresst. Spaeter habe ich das Feld gewechselt und Hafer gemaeht ... einige Truthaehne liefen vor mir her und konnten sich einfach nicht entschliessen zu fliegen.

I raked hay and watched many critters, i.e. this fawn (above). You can see the rake on the picture below from my point of view in the tractor. Nick baled. Later I changed fields and cut oats ... some turkeys ran in front of me but could not decide to fly.

Morgen treiben alle Rinder in Sued-Dakota, am Freitag steht ein Viehtrieb auf New Haven an, Samstag sollen Ziegen kastriert werden und, und, und. Und wir erwarten Gaeste aus Frankreich, Manon und Alix.

Tomorrow we'll move cattle in South Dakota, on Friday the same here in New Haven, Saturday we'll castrate goats and, and, and. And we are expecting guests from France, Manon and Alix.
