Als ich im Oktober im winzigen Flieger nach Denver sass, erzaehlte mir meine Sitznachbarin aus Florida, dass sie gerade an einem Cowboy-Fotoworkshop auf einer Ranch in South Dakota teilgenommen hatte. Sie war begeistert und hatte gleich den naechsten Workshop gebucht. Ambitionierte Hobby-Fotografen koennen professionelle Cowboys bei ihrer Arbeit fotografieren. Alles ist authentisch - und das ist in dieser Branche keine Selbstverstaendlichkeit - nur dass die Cowboys sich auf die Fotografen einstellen, also z.B. eine bestimmte Taetigkeit mehrmals wiederholen, ihre Arbeit besonders frueh oder spaet verrichten (Licht!) etc. Morgens und abends wird einige Stunden fotografiert, tagsueber diskutieren die bis zu 8 Teilnehmer ihre Arbeit mit einem Profi. Und meine Sitznachbarin hatte sich dann auch gleich in einen der Cowboys verguckt. Da koennen unsere Reitgaeste ja auch ein Lied von singen ;-)When I sat in a tiny plane to Denver in October, the lady in the seat next to mine told me that she was just returning home from a cowboy photo workshop on a ranch in South Dakota. She was thrilled and had already booked another workshop. Hobby photographers with some ambition can "shoot" professional cowboys at work. Everything is authentic - which is more the exception than the rule in this business. The cowboys only adjust in so far that they repeat moves for the photographers, do their work very early or rather late in the day (light!) etc. Shoots are several hours in the morning and in the evening. During the day the up to 8 participants discuss their work with a professional photographer. My neighbor on the plane had also fallen in love with one of the cowboys. Some of our riding guests can tell you a thing or two about that as well ;-)
Kaum zurueck in New Haven rief ich den Fotografen an. Er veranstaltet zahlreiche Fotoworkshops, aber was ihm noch fehlte: eine Ranch in den Bergen mit Canyons, wo man besser Herbst- und Winter-Workshops veranstalten kann. Denn anders als in der Praerie haben wir Baeume (Herbstlaubverfaerbung), und es faellt mehr Schnee, der dann auch laenger liegen bleibt als in der Ebene. Wir haben einen See, an dem man Pack-Szenen fotografieren kann. Und wir haben mehr und farbenreichere Pferde als die meisten anderen Working Ranches … hier gilt ja noch immer, dass “richtige” Maenner weder Blondinen (Palominos) noch Ungluecksbringer (Schimmel) noch Fleckvieh (Paints) noch Indianerponies (Appis) reiten. Waehrend der Schwerpunkt auf der bisherigen Ranch mehr auf Rinderarbeit liegt, sollen bei uns Horse Drives im Mittelpunkt stehen. Nicht zu vergessen Bueffelaufnahmen auf einer Nachbarranch. Sprich: Die New Haven Ranch passte wie die Faust aufs Auge.
When home in New Haven, I called the photographer. He organizes lots of photo workshops but what he still needed was this: a ranch in the mountains with canyons which would work better for fall and winter workshops. Unlike in the prairie we have trees (color change in fall) and more snow that also stays longer than on the plains. We have a lake at which one can set up pack scenes. And we have more and also more colorful horses than the average working ranch ... because "real" men still don't ride blondes (Palominos), bad luck (grays), Fleckvieh (Paints) or Indian ponies (Appis). While cattle work was the focus at the prairie ranch, horse work and drives will be the focus on our place. Plus the possibility to take shots of buffalos on a neighboring ranch. To put into a nutshell: The New Haven Ranch was a perfect match.
Vor ein paar Tagen kam der Fotograf fuer ein paar Marketingfotos vorbei, denn ab 2011 soll es losgehen. Ein Workshop im Oktober, einer im Februar und ggf. mehr, falls auch Interesse an anderen Jahreszeiten besteht. Und natuerlich kann (muss aber nicht) der 4-taegige Fotoworkshop mit einem Reit- und Ranchurlaub kombiniert werden. Bisher habt Ihr nur meine Schnappschuesse vom Shooting gesehen … demnaechst zeige ich Euch ein paar Profibilder und stelle das gesamte Angebot vor. Bin ziemlich begeistert … kann und will mir keine 10.000-Dollar-Ausruestung zulegen, aber man kann sicher auch so etwas uebers Fotografieren lernen. Und natuerlich werden noch mehr Cowboys waehrend der Workshops auf der Ranch sein ... damit uns die Motive nicht ausgehen ;-)
A few days ago the photographer came up for some marketing photos because the first photo workshops will take place in 2011. One in October, one in February and more if there is interest in different times of the year. Participants can (but don't have to) combine their 4-day workshop with a riding and ranch vacation. So far you have only seen my very unprofessional shots of the action ... soon I will be able to present the photographers pics and more details about the whole deal. I am pretty excited ... won't be able and don't want to buy 10,000 Dollar equipment but I am sure I can learn a lot without it, too. And of course there will be many cowboys on the ranch for the workshops ... so we don't get bored with the same subjects ;-)

On the pics you see Nick who is moving some horses to the shoot. Since it was pretty warm, we did not have snow everywhere anymore ... but the next blizzard is supposed to reach us tonite.
