Fresh snow and 5 degrees Fahrenheit during the day (minus 15 degrees Celsius) ... during my first few years in Wyoming we started feeding the horses with hay in February, then in January, last year mid-December and this year mid-November. The winters become longer, colder and wetter.

It was beautiful, though, when Nick and I drove out on the new 4-wheeler to search for the horses to bring them back to the ranch. On the way we found our little cattle herd as well: former bottle calf Anabel, Red's last daughter, Whitie, beefalo Bernadette, buffalo Daisy and Lee's bull (which he lent us). The sheep which Nick and I had just wormed hang out around the ranch anyway.
Schade.
By the way: our new 4-wheeler. We traded in the Kawasaki mule - at a loss - for the new Honda Foreman. The mule was really handy but it did not hold up well in the snow and mud. Too bad.
Blade is better. I wonder though when we'll be able to see the chiropractic again. The weather is unreliable and on top of that Thanksgiving is on Thursday. Which reminds me that I started this blog about one year ago. How time flies ...

While I could hardly move anymore after hours in the cold, Emmett (on the sled) and dog Gauge enjoyed the weather. Emmett wasn't outside for long and Gauge is made for this climate. The horses are, too even though they were hungry. It amazes me how such big animals are able to keep going in such deep snow with little dry grass and such low temps. But we don't want to take risks ...

This week, Nick also built fences. We have about 10 small food plots where Nick grows turnips for the deer to keep them on the ranch (for our hunting guests but also for game management). So far we only put up electrical fences but the cattle did not take them very seriously. Now permanent barb wire fences will keep the bovines out. The "wild" turkeys cannot be kept out so easily. Hundreds of them sit in the corrals and around the buildings to find something edible. Our geese, ducks and chickens are in a pen with a shed because they would otherwise become easy prey for predators. These days all animals are hungry.
