Owen (auf Cloud) treibt Pferde / Owen (on Cloud) moves horses

Seit Jahren habe ich die Entscheidung vor mir her geschoben. Doc, ein Fuchswallach, der schon seit seinem 3. Jahr auf der Ranch lebt und zunaechst Brandys und dann Nicks und Heikes und zuletzt mein Pferd war, hatte Hufrolle. Die vergangenen vier Jahre konnte ich ihn nicht mehr reiten, aber da er trotz seines hohen Alters ansonsten topfit war, durfte er hier seinen Lebensabend verbringen. Dieses Jahr konnte er jedoch kaum mehr der Herde folgen. Der Winter steht vor der Tuer, und wir sehen dann manchmal die Herde fuer Wochen nicht. Sollte ich Doc mitschicken, obwohl er Schmerzen hatte und den Anschluss verlieren wuerde und - wie Silke meinte - sich aufgrund seiner Unsicherheit auch leichter verletzen koennte? Mal von finanziellen Gruenden ganz abgesehen (auch hier kostet der Unterhalt eines Pferdes Geld) geht es auch um die Lebensqualitaet des Pferdes, das ein Leben in relativer Freiheit gewohnt ist ... ich wollte Doc nicht in Einzelhaft im Korral mit Schmerzmitteln halten. Keine einfache Entscheidung ...

For years I have been delaying this decision. Doc, a sorrel gelding, has lived on the ranch since he was a three-year old. He was Brandy's, then Nick's and Heike's and then my horse before he developed navicular syndrome. I haven't been able to ride him for the last four years but since despite his old age he was otherwise healthy, we let him enjoy retirement on the ranch. This year, though, he could hardly follow the herd anymore. Winter is coming and then we often don't see the herd for weeks at a time. Should I send Doc with the others even though he was in pain and might not be able to keep up and - as Silke said - get injured due not being surefooted anymore? Not to mention financial reasons (yes, out here keeping a horse costs money as well) one needs to consider the horse's quality of life. Doc was used to a life in relative freedom ... I did not want to keep him alone in the corral and feed him pain killers. Not an easy decision ...

Ich moechte kein Pferd erschiessen, und Nick reisst sich auch nicht darum. Deshalb waren wir froh, als Owen, der auf einer Nachbarranch arbeitet, uns anbot, diese Aufgabe zu uebernehmen. Zunaechst wollten wir die Pferdeherde, die Longhornrinder und die Bullen auf eine andere Weide treiben. Unsere Reitpferde, die wir dichter an der Ranch halten, hatten sich alle ausser Cloud und Cassidy aus dem Staub gemacht (wir haben sie spaeter wiedergefunden). Da Owen Cloud und Silke Cassidy ritt, blieb mir nur das Quad, um die Beiden, die die Ranch nicht so gut kennen, zu unterstuetzen. Nick arbeitete unterdessen an einem neuen Damm (mehr dazu ein anderes Mal).

I do not want to shoot a horse and Nick is not crazy about it either. Good for us when Owen who works on a neighboring ranch offered to do the job. But first we wanted to move the horses, the longhorn cows and the bulls to another pasture. Our riding horses which we keep closer to the ranch were all gone (we found them later) but for Cloud and Cassidy. Since Owen rode Cloud and Silke Cassidy, I took the 4-wheeler to help since Owen and Silke don't know the ranch that well. In the meantime, Nick was working on a another dam (more about that some other time).

Philip, Tiffany und ihre Kinder Keira (s. Foto) und Lashae werden den Winter ueber auf der Ranch leben. Sie haben ihre Pferde - einen Blue Roan, einen Bay Roan und ein Fuchsfohlen - mitgebracht (s. Foto). Schade, dass ich die Roans nicht als unsere Pferde ausgeben kann ;-) Schoene Tiere, aber noch nicht ganz zugeritten.

Philip, Tiffany and their children Keira (s. photo) and Lashae are going to spend the winter on the ranch. They brought their horses - a blue roan, a bay roan and a sorrel filly (s. photo). Too bad that I cannot pretend the roans are ours ;-) Pretty animals but not really started, yet.

Nachdem Owen und Silke die Rinder und Pferde auf eine neue Weide gebracht hatten, fuehrte Silke Doc am Halfter zurueck zur Ranch (s. Foto). Ich habe mich von ihm verabschiedet, bevor Nick und Owen ihn zu einem nahen Canyon brachten. Er wusste bis zuletzt nicht, was auf ihn zukam.

After Owen and Silke had moved the cattle and horses onto a new pasture, Silke ponied Doc back to the ranch (s. photo). I said bye to him before Nick and Owen brought him to a near canyon. He never knew what was going to happen.

Der Wecker klingelt um 4.30 Uhr: der erste Tag des Cowboy-Fotoworkshops beginnt. Gestern abend war Les mit den Teilnehmern angereist. Heute morgen wollten wir Silhouetten vor der aufgehenden Sonne aufnehmen ... Pustekuchen ... der Himmel war bedeckt, aber gute Fotografen machen auch daraus etwas.

The alarm clock goes off at 4.30 am: the first day of the cowboy photo workshop begins. Yesterday Les arrived with the participants. This morning we wanted to shoot silhouettes in front of the rising sun ... nice idea ... but the sky was overcast ... good photographers can deal with this and change their plans.

Nun bin ich weit entfernt davon, eine gute Fotografin zu sein. Ich habe noch nicht mal die Bedienungsanleitung meiner kleinen Kamera gelesen. Aber solange ich noch nicht auf das Material der Fotografen zugreifen kann, muesst Ihr mit meinen Schnappschuessen vorlieb nehmen (zum Vergroessern drauf klicken). Die Herren diskutierten in Fachchinesisch, von dem ich nur jedes fuenfte Wort verstanden habe.

Now, I am far from being a good photographer. I haven't even read the manual of my little camera. But as long as I don't have any of the good photographer's material, you will have to do with my snap shots (click to enlarge). The guys discussed their work in some kind of technobabble of which I only understood every fifth word or so.

Es war mild, angenehm zum Reiten und Fotografieren, aber bei Frost sieht die Landschaft schoener aus. Wir werden das Beste draus machen. Und waehrend ich hier sitze, arbeiten die Fotografen an ihren Laptops und bearbeiten ihre Bilder. Heute Abend wollen wir Szenen mit einem Packpferd "schiessen", da ist dann Leftie gefragt.

It was mild, nice for riding and taking pics but when it's colder, the landscape looks prettier. We will have to do with this. And while I am sitting here, the photographers work on their laptops improving their photos. Tonite we want to "shoot" scenes with a pack horse, then we need Leftie.
