Docs letzter Tag / Doc's last day

Owen (auf Cloud) treibt Pferde / Owen (on Cloud) moves horses
Keine einfache Entscheidung ...

For years I have been delaying this decision. Doc, a sorrel gelding, has lived on the ranch since he was a three-year old. He was Brandy's, then Nick's and Heike's and then my horse before he developed navicular syndrome. I haven't been able to ride him for the last four years but since despite his old age he was otherwise healthy, we let him enjoy retirement on the ranch. This year, though, he could hardly follow the herd anymore. Winter is coming and then we often don't see the herd for weeks at a time. Should I send Doc with the others even though he was in pain and might not be able to keep up and - as Silke said - get injured due not being surefooted anymore? Not to mention financial reasons (yes, out here keeping a horse costs money as well) one needs to consider the horse's quality of life. Doc was used to a life in relative freedom ... I did not want to keep him alone in the corral and feed him pain killers. Not an easy decision ...

I do not want to shoot a horse and Nick is not crazy about it either. Good for us when Owen who works on a neighboring ranch offered to do the job. But first we wanted to move the horses, the longhorn cows and the bulls to another pasture. Our riding horses which we keep closer to the ranch were all gone (we found them later) but for Cloud and Cassidy. Since Owen rode Cloud and Silke Cassidy, I took the 4-wheeler to help since Owen and Silke don't know the ranch that well. In the meantime, Nick was working on a another dam (more about that some other time).

Philip, Tiffany and their children Keira (s. photo) and Lashae are going to spend the winter on the ranch. They brought their horses - a blue roan, a bay roan and a sorrel filly (s. photo). Too bad that I cannot pretend the roans are ours ;-) Pretty animals but not really started, yet.

After Owen and Silke had moved the cattle and horses onto a new pasture, Silke ponied Doc back to the ranch (s. photo). I said bye to him before Nick and Owen brought him to a near canyon. He never knew what was going to happen.

Shipping Day

Rita und Indy bei der Arbeit / Rita and Indy at work

On Tuesday at dawn we gathered our cows and calves. The day before, Nick, Anja, Rita and I had already moved them closer to the ranch so that they did not have to walk that far on Tuesday. We sold our calves and before they are loaded onto a truck, they are weighed. Obviously, we want them to fill up with feed and milk or water and not have time to shit and pee since every pound is worth money. It was cold but luckily did not snow so the cattle were pretty relaxed. Had they had to look for shelter from the weather all night, they would have eaten less.

As soon as they were in the corral, the calves got separated from the cows. Then they were sexed and sorted accordingly, weighed, checked by the brand inspector and loaded. In the afternoon the vet came and ultrasounded every cow for pregnancy. On Saturday, the pregnant cows will be trucked to Montana where they'll spend the winter on Brandy's and Brandon's ranch. It snows less there and the cows can graze better. Also, they don't have pine trees. Eating pine needles can cause abortions in cows.

Today, we trailered the open and old cows to the auction in Belle Fourche. No rancher can afford to keep cows for fun. They have to have a calf every year. Well, we are more lenient with our Longhorns since we also use them for our summer team pennings.

And the we bought two new horses - as already mentioned on our Facebook page: a well trained ranch gelding named Cloud for Nick and an also very willing Appaloosa mare named Cassidy for our riding guests.

Last but not least: Nick's mother JoAnn became 80. We organised a little surprise party with guests and cooked as well.

Schwangerschaftstest bei Kuehen / Preg check for cows

Anke auf/on Chocolate und/and Silke auf/on Smokey

On Tuesday we helped our neighbor Ken to move his about 260 cows to the ranch for preg checking. The open cows (not pregnant, in this case 18) have bad luck and are sold as butcher meat because here no rancher can afford to feed a cow just for fun.

The weather was gorgeous. The cattle drive only took close to two hours. Then we worked on the chute. While Nick and the cowboys kept the flow of cows going, the vet checked for pregnancy by pushing his arm into the cow's rectum - in this case also using ultrasound. From the intestine he can palpate the uterus. Ultrasound makes the check even more exact but it is also more expensive.

Ken worked the cute, Silke vaccinated, Anke took care of the gates and I applied wormer. We were done by sunset. And still had to cook for our hunters and go and vote. I am not allowed to vote because I only have a Green Card but Nick did his duty as a citizen. And no: I am not going to comment the outcome of the elections in this blog :-)

Besser spaet als nie / Better late than never

Wienerin/Viennese Anne und/and KC in Sued-Dakota/South Dakota

Yes, we are still alive. I always had enough to do – especially in summer. But since our cook left, the day does not have enough hours anymore, despite Sandra’s great help. And yes, it’s hard to believe but it is not easy to find a good cook in the middle of the season … not in Wyoming where there are more cattle and sheep than people.

So, if you have the mind and time (from now till mid October) to help me cook (you should have some talent), let me know ... also if you are living in Europe.

One way or the other, I will put at least one blog online per week but probably not more.

Silke had barely arrived when she had to leave again. We did not have enough time to marry her away … the woman was fencing all the time. But we’ll see her again. Yesterday, Therese helped Nick with fencing, today Anne … I can luckily say I am too busy with cooking ;-)

Tav is like the Energizer bunny and sits in the saddle every day … sweet 26!

And then we had the most interesting professions here: chiropractic, physiotherapist, vet tec (thanks for the help for humans and animals), judge, director, detective, pharmeceutical representative, lawyer, china expert, antique rifle dealer, crane operator and and and.

Our goats, Bonny and Clyde, now wear dog shock collars ... don’t worry, they are so smart they will certainly learn fast not to sleep on top of the hot tub anymore, jump onto the cars or into the feed bag … my sheep were always well behaved, I never needed to train them.

Oh, and my friend Susan from Bozeman, Montana visited as well.

Geburtstag meiner Mutter.

By the way, Nick and I will not go to Germany in October but in February, for my mother’s 70th birthday.

All the guests of the past two weeks and what else happened: see photos (thanks to Jacqueline, Anne, Susanne and Julia). Today, the new ones (Klaus, Nadine, Eric, Gabi and Svenja) will sit in the saddle for the first time … more information later.
